Is a Liverpool defensive double-up a viable option for Fantasy managers?

Liverpool’s defence has been fairly disappointing this season – at least as a collective.

Having recorded an impressive 21 clean sheets in 2018/19 (the most in a single Premier League campaign in 11 years), the Reds’ backline was always going to struggle to match last season’s output.

So far there have been just two shut-outs: only Norwich City and Tottenham Hotspur have registered fewer in the English top flight in 2019/20.

Even their second string have been getting in on the act, with Liverpool drawing 5-5 with Arsenal in a bonkers EFL Cup tie on Wednesday.

A favourable fixture swing awaits Jurgen Klopp’s side after the November international break, however, with the Reds playing Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, Everton, Bournemouth and Watford before their blank Gameweek 18.

Fantasy managers might be tentatively considering a Liverpool defensive double-up during this period, then, but how do the Reds’ underlying statistics stack up? Have they been unlucky so far? And how are they comparing to last season’s numbers?

              You’re right. There’s no evidence - he definitely hasn’t just been benched for consecutive League games. I can’t think of any reason why he wouldn’t possibly start - you should go ahead and captain him

    Liverpool's schedule is about to get crazy with their inclusion in the Club World Cup in December

    Just a quick look at the three different outcomes as part of early planning:

    1) the Club World Cup thing gets scrapped and Liverpool go back as normal with no crazy schedule

    2) Liverpool's Quarter Final cup game could be moved to GW17 meaning they blank in GW17 (WAT) and GW18 (whu).

    - If they win the quarter final, WAT should go to a DGW in GW22 with whu slotting in just before GW25 (could be part of 24 or 25 depending on the scheduling)
    - If they lose the quarter final, WAT can be played during the Semi Final games as part of a DGW21, with the "whu" fixture as part of a DGW in GW22

    In essence:

    DGW21*: Liverpool (SHU, WAT), Watford (WOL, liv)
    DGW22*: Liverpool (tot, whu), West Ham (shu, LIV)

    DGW22**: Liverpool (tot, WAT), Watford (bou, liv)
    + one of the below
    DGW24**: Liverpool (wol, whu), West Ham (lei, LIV)
    DGW25**: Liverpool (whu, SOU), West Ham (LIV, BHA)

    * If Liverpool lose their Quarter Final cup game
    ** If Liverpool win their Quarter Final cup game

    3) If the FA allow it, Liverpool's Quarter Final cup game could be postponed and played during the semi final first leg fixtures on the 7th January. This would mean their game against Watford in GW17 would not be affected.

    - If Liverpool win the Quarter Final fixture, they could play the Semi Final first leg game midweek between GW22 and 23. This would mean their fixture against whu would likely be moved to the 28th or 29th January between GW24 and 25 after the 4th Round FA Cup matches.

    DGW24: Liverpool (wol, whu), West Ham (lei, LIV)
    DGW25: Liverpool (whu, SOU), West Ham (LIV, BHA)

    - If Liverpool lost their Quarter Final fixture, then the whu game would simply be played as part of GW22

    DGW22: Liverpool (tot, whu), West Ham (shu, LIV)

      1 I don't think is a possibility anymore, it was at one stage but the CWC has been confirmed for a while now so cant see it being scrapped.

      2 I think is only an option is 3 is not possible as 3 makes the most sense, I think it could be possible that they move the entire Quater Final round to the Semi Final Slot in Jan and the Semi Finals played at the end of Jan.

      I guess well find out soon, I don't think they will just go ahead without Liverpool.

      Have looked at this, and I would be 99% sure it is going to be "option 3" though I would be surprised if the West Ham fixture is given a firm or provisional date in the near future - the priority will be getting the EFL Cup matches done, which will probably involve a semi final leg being played either in a FA Cup replay week or a free CL last 16 week.

    Sterling is barely anywhere to be seen regarding shots-on-target over the last few GWs. Getting chances, making attempts. Not often coming off.

    Jesus has more on target, more bigger chances, better accuracy etc. The obvious caveat is Pep but it's super tempting.

      I think he’s top of the midfielders for big chances on the season, and even over the last 5,4,3 GW’s only Anthony Martial has more big chances than him amongst midfielders

      He has the hattrick v West Ham, the hattrick v Atalanta...

      And perhaps most importantly he has THAT fixture... If Man City were a Ferrari, Aston Villa would probably be a mini metro (hence the somewhat disappointing nature of Sterling’s relatively modest return vs them for captainers - to add to the 8 consecutive disappointing scores he posted prior to Villa) but Southampton must be something closer to a unicycle at the minute

      If Mo has fitness doubts I’m seriously considering a 1-2 week captaincy Hokey Cokey, even just as a hedge!

          Dilva could do very well this GW so def could be worth it (who will you bench if you do though?)!

            would have to bench Connolly which is why I was leaning towards getting mendy or just leaving it all together.

            I also think Dilva could do well this week and I would rather have him vs Liverpool over Mendy but I think its probably better to just keep it simple and use the fts instead of complicating it with two week punts, but punts are so fun 🙂
