Captain Poll

Vote in the Gameweek 23 FPL captain poll

The Gameweek 23 captain poll is up and running and you can cast your vote either via the sidebar or at the foot of this article.

Fresh off the back of their 6-1 victory over Aston Villa, Manchester City’s players will likely be popular picks for the armband when Crystal Palace visit the Etihad this weekend.

At the time of writing, four of the leading ten candidates in our poll are on City’s books: Kevin De Bruyne (£10.7m), Sergio Aguero (£11.8m), Raheem Sterling (£11.8m) and Riyad Mahrez (£8.4m).

Crystal Palace will likely provide sterner opposition than Aston Villa on Saturday and the Eagles, despite all of their injuries in defence, haven’t conceded more than one goal in a league match since November.

That said, Pep Guardiola’s troops have scored at least two goals in 19 of their 22 Premier League games this season and defeated Palace 2-0 in the reverse fixture, racking up 21 shots (including seven big chances) in the process.

De Bruyne averages 7.7 points per match at home this season, although ‘only’ 5.1 points per game in his last seven run-outs at the Etihad.

Sterling, remarkably, has registered just three attacking returns on home soil in 2019/20.

Like Manchester City, Liverpool have scored on 29 occasions in their 11 home fixtures this season.

The Reds are this weekend up against Manchester United, who have an unbeaten record against the top four this season and who are the only club to take points off Jurgen Klopp’s league leaders.

Marcus Rashford (£9.2m) has five goals in his four meetings with the sides currently in the UEFA Champions League spots, while Anthony Martial (£7.9m) has two goals in as many starts against these clubs.

Liverpool are formidable on their own turf, however, with Mohamed Salah (£12.3m) and Sadio Mane (£12.4m) registering ten and 12 attacking returns at Anfield respectively.

At the back, Klopp’s troops are on a run of six straight clean sheets and face a Manchester United side that are scoring at a modest rate of 1.09 goals per game on their travels in 2019/20.

Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) currently sits second in our captain poll and will no doubt be handed the armband by legions of FPL managers again this week, particularly as Leicester City face a Burnley side that have conceded more goals than any Premier League team bar Aston Villa over the last nine Gameweeks.

Vardy has scored in his last five league appearances on the road, averaging 12 points per match in that time.

How I went from 1.3m to a 50k Overall Rank in FPL

Among the differentials, Ismaila Sarr (£6.2m) is attracting a fair bit of support.

Watford are this weekend facing Tottenham Hotspur, who have kept only one clean sheet in the ten league matches that Jose Mourinho has taken charge of.

Sarr, meanwhile, has registered five attacking returns in as many Gameweeks, with only De Bruyne and Mahrez able to beat that total among FPL midfielders.

One or both of Lucas Moura (£7.1m) or Son Heung-min (£9.8m) may well be lining up ‘out of position’ for the Lilywhites in that fixture, deputising for Harry Kane (£10.9m) in attack, but Watford have really tightened up of late and kept clean sheets in four of their last seven matches.

Neal Maupay (£5.8m) and Brighton and Hove Albion are next up to have a pop at Villa’s leaky defence, while Chelsea’s fine away record – 25 goals scored in 11 matches on the road – may see Tammy Abraham (£7.8m) pick up a captaincy nomination or two.

Abraham has attacking returns in each of the last three Gameweeks and has scored eight goals in 11 starts on his travels this season, assisting a further three.

These are the reverse fixtures of the matches contested in Gameweek 9, when goals were in fairly short supply: not one team scored more than twice in that set of games.

For those who like their omens, Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) and the in-form Danny Ings (£6.8m) both scored when Wolves and Southampton last met back in October.

There is further encouragement for Ings this Saturday: no side has kept fewer clean sheets than Wolves (one) over the last 14 Gameweeks.

Vardy, Rashford and Jack Grealish (£6.5m) were also on target against this weekend’s opponents back in Gameweek 9, with the Aston Villa man registering one of his two double-digit hauls of 2019/20.

David and Joe will be bringing you their captaincy video this Tuesday lunchtime, while the Captain Sensible article will be out in its usual slot on Friday morning for a more in-depth look at the runners and riders for the armband in Gameweek 23.

I’m at least considering it - poster this on page 2:

Thoughts on Abraham captain this week?!

Yes he constantly misses loads of chances, gets negative Baps and can go on long blanking streaks but.....

      - Nailed on to start
      - better away than at home
      - Newcastle aren’t great, have leaked a lot of goals last few weeks and they have FA cup tonight
      - He is sort of in form - has returned in the last 3 and has missed loads of chances, at some point they go in.
      - noone will captain him and at 25% EO he is a big differential

I've got my team set up nicely for next week's DGW, and thinking of playing the Free Hit Chip this GW to take a punt on a resurgent looking city.

Free hit team looks like the below.
Two questions, is this a waste of a chip?
Anyone else you would recommend in the team? Sterling?

    Ederson
    Kolasinic, Soy, TAA
    Richarlison, KDB, Grealish, Cantwell
    Vardy, Aguero, Lacazette
    (Bench is mostly fodder)

    A DCL and Walker -> Firminio and a 5.7 DEF (-4)
B Maddison and Walker to Salah and 4.5 DEF (-4)
C Straight swap Walker to Robertson

And for a bonus point who to TC from the LIV guys

Yeah I know ment more for the dgw going for Aguero instead of one of Mane/Salah..

I'm chasing one ML by 39 pts and the other 100 pts so trying to figure out ways of closing the gap..

I guess Kun on the bench isn't gonna help close the gap...

I’ve got a similar issue being 60 behind in a ML and him already having TAA, Salah and Mane. I’m considering going firminio / Robbo instead of Mane but it’s a risk.

In my experience best way to close gaps is not to panic too much, make solid picks but make sure you captain a different player to your rival each week

For the double gameweek: Double attack definitely seems best
Longer term for all the good Liverpool fixtures; double defence definitely. Can’t see salah and mane combined being value

So depends if you want to get double attack for the double and restructure or not.

The other variable to consider is Manes near 100% ownership in top 10k - I’ve got Salah abd TAA currently. I want to go Robbo as my third but Manes ownership particularly with TC chip flying around is very scary

Now the big one for GW24:
    1) Rash to Firmino (just 1 ft and TC Salah) Not having Mane could kill me stone dead.
    2) Aurier to VVD and Traore to Dendo (1 hit but leaves me with players I want. Ings, Rash, Vardy, Mahrez, KDB Salah Cantwell. No hiding behind the sofa.
    3) KDB to Mane and Rash to a 7.1 or less. -4 (Cannot think of anyone)
    4)Anything else?

The only reason I might get Mane is ownership. With TC chips he will potentially be close to 200% EO. If you don’t own him and he gets a huge haul (particularly if salah blanks) then I’m not exaggerating when I say that would be season over.

Conversely what happens if Mané blanks and Salah hauls? It is a risk/reward play

        1. TheDragon
          • 5 Years
          4 years, 2 months ago

If you own Mane you get all of the upside of TC salah with a lot of the downside mitigated

Not owning mane at all, the downside is huge relatively

You can only captain (or TC) one of Salah and Mane. Meanwhile, Firmino’s away record is arguably better than Mane, he’s arguably less likely to be rotated in the DGW24 matches and you can then easily switch him to Rashford (or back to Rashford if you have him already). And if he hauls, you’re laughing as he is the biggest differential of the 5 major options.

No, I’m saving mine for a City DGW.

You can’t compare that to a possible city double gameweek

With City it’s always going to be high risk/high reward. Aguero and Mahrez owner.

Even a blind squirrel finds nuts some of the time.

A city double GW could of course be incredible but...
                - it’s not guaranteed to happen
                - don’t know what the fixtures will be
                - city players have very high chances of not starting both in a DGW particularly if the league is already decided and still in Europe
                - Liverpool have a pretty good double GW now and they are still desperate for league points

I’m not going to over think it

Like I said, high risk = high reward. Good luck with your TC.

                    You too.

With how my season is going, Salah will get injured in the first 5 mins of the DGW!

Yeah - one less thing to worry about when the bigger DGWs come around.

This is true. You can be more flexible with the rest of your chips when you don't have to squeeze between all the blanks and doubles.

I hate DGWs at the end of the season when the league is already won and rotation is rife... I'll be using it, just have the headache of Mane v Salah

If City go on a cup run then they could have 3 doubles given the FA cup quarters and semis clash with 31 and 34 and they look certain to blank in 28.

If he was guaranteed to start I'd go with Cantwell but he clearly had a problem in the last game so may be rested. Plus the new guy Duda will likely sub in for him if he starts

I played an early WC in GW2 and it really paid off. Accelerated past my ML rivals with some key decisions. Question is, do I play an early one in phase 2 of the season or wait to use it to navigate the later DGWs?

    Current squad:
    Fabs / Button
    TAA / Soy / Lund / Aurier / Rico
    Mane / KDB / Maddison / Sarr / Traore
    Vardy / Ings / Rashford

    Potential WC squad (6 changes):
    Mcarthy / 4.0
    TAA / Lund / Baldock / Williams / Tandanga
    Mane / Salah / KDB / Sarr / Dendonk
    Vardy / Ings / Rashford

Whats the consenus for early play. Wise considering above or too hasty?

He is playing for Aston Villa who don’t have a defence

He’d be over priced at £3.5m

      A dominant 2-0 win

      VVD from a Robbo corner
TAA from a DFK after Robbo fouled

        2-1 you mean 🙂

Martial sneaks and early one. Mane fouled in box Mo pen. Mo last minute winner

This is a good question - I think some will be luckier this year than previous years though as not many will have too many from those teams at the moment and have time to adjust. The more interesting one will probably be after the FA Cup fifth round draw (which happens during GW24) when we will have a much better idea who will be likely to be playing and blanking in the big FA Cup quarter final blank weekend. That's when (for those that way inclined) the fun planning and strategy thinking really starts.
