The winners and losers on the FPL Bonus Points System

With Premier League football suspended for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus pandemic, any articles we produce over the coming weeks (and perhaps months) will focus less on Gameweek-to-Gameweek planning or strategies for the season run-in and more on wider issues.

A topic that is frequently raised on these pages is Fantasy Premier League’s Bonus Points System (BPS), which can leave the uninitiated bewildered.

How come Anthony Martial (£7.9m) hasn’t gained one bonus point since Gameweek 19, despite scoring in five matches after that point? Why is Federico Fernandez (£4.5m) such a BAP-magnet at Newcastle United? And why do forwards tend to accrue more bonus points than players in other positions?

We’ll address those questions and more below.

How does the Bonus Points System Work in FPL?

Long gone are the days of the ‘man in the stand’, where an independent match assessor from the Press Association would distribute bonus points based on a subjective evaluation of which three players stood out in a particular Premier League game.

Now the Bonus Points System harnesses a range of Opta statistics to create a performance score for every player involved.

The players with the three highest BPS scores in a match subsequently receive bonus points, although ties can mean that additional players also gain them.

Some of you will be familiar with the key Opta metrics that FPL use (most of which can be found in our Members Area) but, for the unversed, all of the below contribute to a player’s matchday BPS score.

All players, no matter what the position, will be affected by the performance indicators below, unless specified (e.g. goalkeepers and defenders keeping a clean sheet).

Game-time and attacking returns
Playing 1 to 59 minutes3
Playing 60+ minutes6
Goalkeepers and defenders scoring a goal12
Midfielders scoring a goal18
Forwards scoring a goal24
Assists9
Defensive Contributions

Attacking Contributions
Successful open play cross1
Creating a big chance (a chance where the receiving player should score)3
Key pass1
Successful dribble1
Scoring the goal that wins a match3
Pass Completion
70 to 79% pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted)2
80 to 89% pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted)4
90%+ pass completion (at least 30 passes attempted)6
Defensive Deductions
Conceding a penalty-3
Yellow card-3
Red card-9
Own goal-6
Making an error which leads to a goal-3
Making an error which leads to an attempt at goal-1
Conceding a foul-1
Attacking Deductions
Missing a penalty-6
Missing a big chance-3
Being tackled-1
Being caught offside-1
Shot off target-1

To give an example, Romain Saiss (£4.5m) was awarded maximum bonus points in Wolves’ 0-0 draw with Brighton in Gameweek 29.

His BPS score of 28 was made up of:

  • Playing 60+ minutes: 6
  • Keeping a clean sheet: 12
  • Recoveries: 3
  • CBIs: 1
  • Net tackles: 6
  • Pass completion: 4
  • Yellow cards: -3
  • Fouls conceded: -1

You can see the full breakdown in the BPS Plus and BPS Minus tabs in the Player Stats section of each match in our Members Area (Wolves v Brighton can be viewed here).

Never watched it, but The Voice and numerous programmes on other channels have already stopped filming including Eastenders, Doctors, Holby City and Causulty. They confine us to homes without any live sport or the most popular TV programmes to watch. I'm going to be bonkers in 12 weeks time, if I'm not already.

      o/

Being a big fan of F1 and also the F1 video game series this is right down my alley.
I already am a fan of the Esports Pro Series F1 and often tune into the races.

Being familiar with the game i can appreciate just how talented the sim drivers are as the game is very technical and in my book one of the best and most pure AAA video games in the world today. These sims just keep getting better and better and the whole Esports seen is getting a life of it's own now.The sim kit that is out there these days is fantastic and i often dream of building a proper cockpit for my gaming setup.I use a logitech g29 sometimes myself but this is only a toy comparing to something like the podium racing Wheel which is a serious bit of kit and this is reflected by it's price tag. Some day hopefully.

Those simulators are ultrarealistic these days, with testing time limited driver use them to learn the tracks and hone their reactions etc these days. A viable alternative to the F1 championship, no but it would definitely be worth watching if they can get the top F1 drivers involved.

1 Will current membership be extended to the end of the season ?
2 Can the season ticker & rate my team stats be updated to include games to be re-arranged under maybe TBC ?
3 Can we get an answer from FPL as to will we get a mega game week 38 or will there be extra game weeks ?

      Hey mate!

Potentially, we'll see how things fall. No decision on anything has been made yet or will be made until we know what's happening!

Ticker and RateMyTeam - both good shouts, I'll look at those early this week.

I think right now, use your transfers to get your team in the best possible place for either scenario. Fix the poor picks in your side and we'll wait for confirmation either way!

I emailed FPL last week to ask the question about the software capability of their site to add on extra gameweeks. Still waiting for a reply. It's critical that we know this because given the likelihood of a further extension beyond 30th April taking us past GW38, if FPL will not be adding on additional gameweeks then basically FPL is over now. Im gonna email them again today.

Have a bit of respect please.

These people are on the front line in this battle and deserve everything they get imo.
One in four of the people here in Ireland that have been infected are health care workers so anything they get in the way of help for them and their family's is well deserved.

I am sure you will get the odd ***hole that are using this crisis as an opportunity to do some profiteering but in the main most people are honest.

No but these freebies should be given to key workers as well or just don't at all. Need to be fair, as it allows certain groups to really benefit.

      I'm all for it.

Working for the NHS doesn't automatically mean someone is doing an 'important' job, but there are a large proportion who do. Obviously it would be a bit hard to sieve out the key NHS jobs from the rest.

It would be nice for other key workers to get freebies yes, but the line has to be drawn somewhere.

If I had my way I would call a lockdown, have the army enforce it.

Carrying on in this whimsical way will just mean prolonged strain on NHS. Draw the line and lock it all down for 2 weeks.

Will also allow sanitising of very public/ high traffic areas and "recharge the batteries" for all concerned.

There will always be casualties of "war", but you have to focus on where the line should be drawn.

I'm a 'key worker' apparently and I'm just grateful be in a job that has a semblance of stability at the moment. The NHS staff are taking a hammering and more than deserve a perk or a freebie or whatever you want to call it.

Why do you feel sick about it? I do feel however many key workers are being left out, many companies seem to offer freebies to NHS Staff only whilst a good thing seems to be missing alot of important people out.

What about the truck drivers who are serving this countries supermarkets, the delivery drivers, the supermarket workers, the bin men. Whilst they are not out in the hospitals these people should be recognised too. Without these people this country would be in a further state of dire straits.

Give the staff of the NHS anything they want, the next few weeks will be hell on earth. Supposedly I’m a key worker but I won’t even get paid being a contractor but I don’t give a damn, give it to the NHS staff some of whom who are working 20hrs a day in the most terrible of conditions. People sitting at home on their sofas worrying if they will catch the virus should swap places for a day.

You want to know what it's like to work on the front lines here in the US

Essay from Josh Lerner, MD after the CDC loosens guidelines for those on the front lines.

“In one of the most vivid scenes in the HBO miniseries "Chernobyl" (among many vivid scenes), soldiers dressed in leather smocks ran out into radioactive areas to literally shovel radioactive material out of harm's way. Horrifically under-protected, they suited up anyway. In another scene, soldiers fashioned genital protection from scrap metal out of desperation while being sent to other hazardous areas.

Please don't tell me that in the richest country in the world in the 21st century, I'm supposed to work in a fictionalized Soviet-era disaster zone and fashion my own face mask out of cloth because other Americans hoard supplies for personal use and so-called leaders sit around in meetings hearing themselves talk. I ran to a bedside the other day to intubate a crashing, likely COVID, patient. Two respiratory therapists and two nurses were already at the bedside. That's 5 N95s masks, 5 gowns, 5 face shields and 10 gloves for one patient at one time. I saw probably 15-20 patients that shift, if we are going to start rationing supplies, what percentage should I wear precautions for?

Make no mistake, the CDC is loosening these guidelines because our country is not prepared. Loosening guidelines increases healthcare workers' risk but the decision is done to allow us to keep working, not to keep us safe. It is done for the public benefit - so I can continue to work no matter the personal cost to me or my family (and my healthcare family). Sending healthcare workers to the front line asking them to cover their face with a bandana is akin to sending a soldier to the front line in a t-shirt and flip flops.

I don't want talk. I don't want assurances. I want action. I want boxes of N95s piling up, donated from the people who hoarded them. I want non-clinical administrators in the hospital lining up in the ER asking if they can stock shelves to make sure that when I need to rush into a room, the drawer of PPE equipment I open isn't empty. I want them showing up in the ER asking "how can I help" instead of offering shallow "plans" conceived by someone who has spent far too long in an ivory tower and not long enough in the trenches. Maybe they should actually step foot in the trenches.

I want billion-dollar companies like 3M halting all production of any product that isn't PPE to focus on PPE manufacturing. I want a company like Amazon, with its logistics mastery (it can drop a package to your door less than 24 hours after ordering it), halting its 2-day delivery of 12 reams of toilet paper to whoever is willing to pay the most in order to help get the available PPE supply distributed fast and efficiently in a manner that gets the necessary materials to my brothers and sisters in arms who need them.

I want Proctor and Gamble, and the makers of other soaps and detergents, stepping up too. We need detergent to clean scrubs, hospital linens and gowns. We need disinfecting wipes to clean desk and computer surfaces. What about plastics manufacturers? Plastic gowns aren't some high-tech device, they are long shirts/smocks...made out of plastic. Get on it. Face shields are just clear plastic. Nitrile gloves? Yeah, they are pretty much just gloves...made from something that isn't apparently Latex. Let's go. Money talks in this country. Executive millionaires, why don't you spend a few bucks to buy back some of these masks from the hoarders, and drop them off at the nearest hospital.

I love biotechnology and research but we need to divert viral culture media for COVID testing and research. We need biotechnology manufacturing ready and able to ramp up if and when treatments or vaccines are developed. Our Botox supply isn't critical, but our antibiotic supply is. We need to be able to make more plastic ET tubes, not more silicon breast implants.

Let's see all that. Then we can all talk about how we played our part in this fight. Netflix and chill is not enough while my family, friends and colleagues are out there fighting. Our country won two world wars because the entire country mobilized. We out-produced and we out-manufactured while our soldiers out-fought the enemy. We need to do that again because make no mistake, we are at war, healthcare workers are your soldiers, and the war has just begun.”

      -Josh Lerner, MD.

So you're basically planning a team for the whole season and a potential BB GW38 then.

Looks decent enough. Only 1 I'd put a question mark over is Cantwell. Seems he can be rested/rotated at any given point. Might not be the nailed player you want for a massive BB GW38. I mean he might play every game, but he's not a dead cert like most.

Yeah, exactly that, need a team that works for remaining fixtures.

I agree with your points on Cantwell. In his price range though I’m not sure I see a better option and Norwich have some decent fixtures.

Hi guys, been away for a while...

I now have 2fts so want to use one or two this week ideally. Obviously hard to decide who as fixtures haven't been rearranged and may never be. However, one thing we do know (not me, hence the question) is who has the most fixtures left to play assuming the season gets finished.

So which teams have more fixtures left to play?

Yup, think they realised that for the 'herd immunity' to work, the number of infected would have to be very high, something like 60%?

And that would likely have swamped the healthcare system ...

Don't think that was ever a plan and was probably some "fake news" and disinformation,a lot of which is going about.

If you are really interested you can find out more about the UK governments response here....

I am not saying that option was not discussed by the British government and i heard what the UKs chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance had to say about it but i never seen the UK government coming out and saying that was the policy.

It is easy in hindsight to say we should have done this and we should have done that but in the weeks leading up to where we are now these people were nowhere to be seen. This just moved faster than anyone expected and the governments and peoples of the world are just trying to catch up.I did not see any of the kings of foresight on these threads saying that we should use our chips asap as the season will end shortly in the weeks preceding the halt of the PL after all.

I myself went to Dublin for a few days for a mates weeding in the days around the 7th of March without a care in the world which looks kinda stupid in retrospect. That weekend Ireland were due to play Italy in Dublin in a rugby match and although the match was called off during the week preceding the game the Italian fans still traveled to Dublin and even some of them made their way to here to Kerry sightseeing by all accounts. Now that is a mistake by our government and me personally which if we had a second chance would have done differently.

My point is mistakes are going to be made and tough decisions will also have to be made in this struggle by governments and the likes of you and me alike. We are not always going to get everything right, you just have to accept that as a given and do the best you can.

It seems to me that the usual suspects are queuing up to have a dig at their governments and leaders using this crisis to grind their axe's on.I am not buying it and if these pencil pushers think they can/could do a better job then they should have put themselves before the people and run for election.Media in the UK are trying to blame Boris and the media in the USA are trying to blame Trump for everything, whats new?

Stay at home, if possible guy's.

My relative with the Coronavirus that I mentioned was critically ill last week took a turn for the worse last Wednesday, and has not been awake since. She is however showing signs of improvement, and was able to breath without a ventilator for 3 hours yesterday. She was the first case in her area so has a ventilator which she will need for up to a month (including the time she was already been on), and there won't be enough of those to go round as cases increase. So stay at home to keep the number of inflections down, if possible.

Good advice BITM. That's optimistic news about your relative. Hopefully she pulls through. It's hard not to worry and stress about stuff in these times but it won't change a thing. It's not easy but try staying positive. A lack of sleep can affect our immune system and stress can impact that and make us more vulnerable to COVID. With all the other advised precautions try getting a bit of exercise, get outside and get some fresh air into the lungs and it should help us relax and sleep better. Stay safe and well and if there's no football until 20/21 there's worse things and we'll all be back here with some trivial things to whinge and banter about 🙂

Not easy to make everyone happy here.Looks like they have just decided to let the game run it's course to the end.

I know noting about the technical part of running a game like fpl but i suspect it is not as easy to change things as some would think. There may be legal problems with changing things although from reading the T&Cs/rules they have covered their asses pretty well in any eventuality.

In this permutation, will Watford also stop being dross?
In a 'normal context' - yes I think early qualification would act against them - but in the 'Corona context' who knows what the remainder looks like.
It could be the end of the 19/20 season runs straight into 20/21 - in which case, you'd want your best choice XI to keep playing and stay in form.
Hard to plan around completely unknown permutations.
Still think Harvey looks better than Ismaila.

If you look at Watford since gameweek 17 (when Pearson took over) they are right up there with Leicester on the attacking team stats. They actually created 28 big chances to Leicester's 25.

Wouldn't get too hung up on Big Chances

They'll tell you that Tammy Abraham, Chris Wood & Gabriel Jesus are the strikers with the most Big Chances in the league (apart from Vardy!)

They'll also tell you that Kevin McGoldrick has 15 big chances (2 of which were in GW1, which had a combined XG of 0.41)

Watford have also won 1 of their last 7 league games, and if you exclude the Liverpool & Man Utd games, Sarr has scored 46 FPL points in 17 appearances

Sarr is a very high variance player - so in a parallel universe where CoronaVirus hasn't rendered all of this obselete - if you have the patience to buy & hold him through extended droughts he'll probably be ok

Barnes on the eye test would be the better pick for me - he's got that really greedy/selfish streak that helps a player in FPL - will often shoot when teammates are better placed etc

What happens to Barnes though if you exclude his big returns? Take out his top 3 returns and he looks more or less equally high variance no? 70 points from 24.

What happens to Barnes if you exclude his top two scores?

He goes from 112 down to 81

Sarr goes from 78 down to 46

If you deduct another 40 pts from Barnes after that though he’s down to 41

True, and if you deduct another 41 points after that he's down to zero

Which is pretty horrendous and makes you wonder why anyone is contemplating getting him.

If you don't deduct the 112 points he's scored he's done ok though

Sarr. Topdog in a team battling relegation. For me Barnes has more competition for attacking points within the Leicester team and they're kinda in a safe top 4 comfort zone and he's not as motivated to get into a England squad as the Euros are off.

Good points, but surely Barnes is one of the first names on teamsheet now?

I'll stick with Grealish for now for the same reason I'd pick Sarr over Barnes and why I have Jimenez and Ings. They were the big hitters for their teams. Barnes is good but what will his points share look beside an inform Vardy and a rejuvenated Madison? Both good options but for me Sarr is a goalscorer whereas Barnes is a midfielder who scores goals.

Would you do Salah > Mane?

Also, is it time to get Lundstram back?

I wouldn't be getting rid of Salah.

Lundstram still not certain to start.

...and thus free up your 3rd Wolves slot in case you wanted to go Ings>Jota.

        Nice team though. Real nice

Huh? How do you know what the GW38 fixtures will be? Can't they add additional GWs?

With all of the remaining fixtures in GW38? Wow. That would be terribly unfair to those who have saved their chips.

Possibly but no guarantee the current situation will have blown over at that time. Who knows what way the world will be at that time.

Even if all the games would be played in June and July that would still be GW38 unless they add gameweeks

                1. Pinturicchio10
                    4 years, 6 days ago

Not necessarily. GW38 deadlines and in May, not June. This could go one of a few ways. Thays assuming there's any football all at all.

Point is there is no deadline after the one for GW38, so any fixtures after that could be part of the same gameweek even if no games are played 17th May

I get that. All I'm saying is there's a few ways it could go so very difficult to plan anything in fpl.

Surely adding GWs would be the correct move.

Salah, KDB, Bruno - yes, defo.
Not sold on Fleck at all, and I think Grealish has already shown signs that he can't carry Villa all on his own - be interesting to see what impact the return of Big John makes though.

If money is of no object, I'd bring in Mane - 'Pool have nothing else to play for now, so they may cut loose and go crazy.
Chelsea also have a great run of fixtures, so I'd be tempted to give Mount a slot.
Finally, I'll be keeping an eye on Son and his 'cast'. Spurs have looked shockingly sub-average, but they're fixture ticker looks mighty green and they'll need to put a shift in if they're to get anything out of this season.

But obvs, these options require more cash!

How would you look to improve this lot over the coming weeks?

              Pope
              TAA, VvD, Soyuncu
              Salah, KDB, Fernandes, Barnes
              Aubameyang, Jimenez, Jota

              Button; Lundstram, Hayden, Hanley.

              0.3 ITB

VvD and Soy to Alonso and Maguire perhaps?

I’d want 15 guaranteed starters so I could BB over multiple game weeks.
