World Cup of FPL – Group A

Fantasy Football Scout is delighted to announce that the World Cup of FPL has begun.

After a brutal and gruelling qualification round, the real tournament kicks off today with the first group stage clashes.

You can now vote in Group A below or using the sidebar of our website.

Earlier this week we asked you to nominate the players you believed deserved the chance to compete for the title of greatest FPL asset of all time.

We were faced with a deluge of players, which made the process of choosing just 32 to compete at the finals an incredibly difficult one.

After aggregating that large number of players based on your nominations, we were left with the following groups.

Group AGroup BGroup CGroup D
Branislav IvanovicCarlos TevezDidier DrogbaAndrew Robertson
Frank LampardGareth BaleGylfi SigurdssonCristiano Ronaldo
Patrice EvraSteven GerrardHarry KaneEden Hazard
Robin van PersieThierry HenryRomelu LukakuTrent Alexander-Arnold
Group EGroup FGroup GGroup H
Marcos AlonsoClint DempseyCesc FabregasAlexis Sánchez
Nemanja VidicGareth McAuleyJamie VardyMohamed Salah
Raheem SterlingJohn TerryKevin De BruynePetr Cech
Wayne RooneyLuis SuarezLeighton BainesSergio Aguero

That meant it was so close and yet so far for those who missed out on the tournament, which included Aleksandar Kolarov, Dimitar Berbatov, Christian Eriksen, Joe Hart, Raúl Jiménez, Joleon Lescott, John Lundstram, Riyad Mahrez, Florent Maloud, Michu, Morten-Gamst Pedersen, Yaya Touré and Patrick van Aanholt.

Today marks the opening of the first vote, which pits Branislav Ivanovic, Frank Lampard, Patrice Evra and Robin van Persie against each other.

All you need to do is vote for your two favourite options from this group and when the voting concludes, the top two will advance to the knockout rounds.

Let’s take a look at Group A’s competitors and make sure you cast your vote in the footer.

BRANISLAV IVANOVIC

Before wing-backs truly dominated the defensive department of the Fantasy scene as they do now, Branislav Ivanović was there to provide a bit of everything.

In a Chelsea defence that conceded fewer than 35 goals five times between 2008/09 and 2014/15, the Serbian international played an important role.

On top of a strong defensive foundation, Ivanović, capable of playing at right-back or in the middle of the defence, was capable of attacking returns with satisfying regularity.

2009/10 was his break-out season, as he scored once and assisted five times and he went to even better heights the following campaign with four goals and four assists.

2012/13 produced his first appearance in the end-of-season Dream Team as Chelsea kept 14 clean sheets and Ivanović, benefitting from 12 of those, added five goals and an assist.

2014/15 will be remembered as his most impressive season though, as his four goals and five assists, added to Chelsea’s 16 clean sheets secured a second Dream Team call-up in three years.

FRANK LAMPARD

No player in FPL history has been earned a place in the end-of-season Dream Team more times than Frank Lampard.

The Chelsea midfield achieved that feat a staggering seven times between 2002 and 2015.

Lampard was one of the original ‘essentials’ of FPL, and in this case, there is no argument that the all-hallowed E-word applied to him in his prime.

His ability to score goals and set them up with frightening regularity ensured that Lampard made the Dream Team for five years running between the 2002/03 season and 2006/07.

Again, no other player has strung five consecutive appearances together, with only two other assets finding a place in an end-of-season team that many times in their entire FPL career.

But it was the longevity of Lampard’s value to Fantasy managers that also props up his case here.

Even after dominating the midfield for the best part of the so-called ‘noughties’ decade, he was an important cog in our teams during the early years of the ‘teens’ too.

In the 2009/10 campaign, Lampard scored a staggering 22 goals and providing a further 14 assists and between 2010 and 2013, he continued to score at least 10 times per season.

Such credentials mean that Lampard is not only the favourite to win Group A, but he is also tipped as a hot contender to go the distance and win this World Cup too.

PATRICE EVRA

Patrice Evra was something of a slow-burner at the beginning of his FPL legacy but he went on to become an important part of teams at the turn of the decade.

Earning what you would describe as a regular starting berth on the left side of Manchester United’s defence in 2006/07, Evra came into his own in 2009/10 when he made the first of three Dream Team appearances.

2012/13 was the Frenchman’s most memorable. Having never been much of a goal-scorer until that point, Evra found the net four times and assisted another five goals, only Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie creating more for their colleagues that year. Throw 10 clean sheets into the mix and it was enough for Evra’s third Dream Team call-up in four seasons.

ROBIN VAN PERSIE

The aforementioned van Persie rounds off our Group A competitors having proved to be a crucial Fantasy asset at two different clubs.

The Dutch striker moved to Arsenal in 2004/05 and took some time to prove his worth with several injury problems holding him back.

It wasn’t until 2010 that van Persie really started to trouble the Fantasy radar as he ended the 2009/10 campaign with nine goals and seven assists.

2010/11 saw further improvement as he netted 18 goals and assisted seven more and it was 2011/12 that saw van Persie truly etch his name into the FPL halls of fame.

The ‘always captain van Persie season’ featured a 30-goal campaign from Arsenal’s star man and nine assists.

Switching clubs the following year hardly curtailed van Persie either, as he scored 26 times and assisted nine goals in his first campaign at Manchester United, earning himself back-to-back Dream Team appearances.

I think many people will vote on their experiences owning those players so I can't look past Hazard. There were games when you knew he was certainly getting 22 points as captain. He only ever needed one contribution to take max bps too.

Over the last 2 seasons, 1 pool winger has been more awesome than the other.

Hazard was good, but also frustrating at times, he could blank for 5 matches. With CR7, almost every game i think he had an attacking return.

For me it's clearly the acronymed ones ... CR7 and TAA from this group

CR7 was obviously a stupidly prolific player after he got his early teething years out of the way - but let's not get too carried away either - especially from an FPL perspective

His best ever season was 38 attacking returns (31G 7A in 34 apps 07/08), he got 32 returns the season before (17G 15A in 34 apps in 06/07)

His other seasons were distinctly underwhelming (At 14.0 he delivered 25 returns in 33 apps in 08/09 before going to madrid, then no other seasons above 20 returns)

There are plenty of players posting those types of numbers for much less budget - and plenty who've blown Ronaldo's best ever season out of the water

          Hmm

I remember hearing that Robertson was good when he played for Hull, so I took a look at bringing him in. Sadly it seemed that he had been injured for the previous 4 games. Then I looked a bit closer and realised that he just hadn't scored any points for 4 games.

From little acorns and all that.

Henry was a forward, scored a lot of goals, many if them when Arsenal had dominated teams.

Gerrard was a midfielder, scored a lot if goals and scored defining goals in big games.

Gerrard would be class in any Liverpool team. It's debatable how many goals Henry would have scored for Arsenal without Denis Bergkamp playing alongside him.

I'm a lot biased though because even if he won't show up on any FPL top players list, Denis was my favourite Premier League Player and I love talking about him, the non-flying Dutch master.

An easy Henry win for me between those two

Gerrard largely underwhelmed as an FPL asset apart from his penultimate season when he got 28 attacking returns (his best ever season)

        He managed 121 G & 70 A in 504 appearances across 17 seasons...

Whereas Henry smashed in a quite frankly ridiculous 129G & 58A in just FIVE seasons (i.e. 186 returns in 171 apps) between 2001 & 2006, plus the other G & A in his other 3 seasons either side of those

That included what must be one of the all time greatest season hauls in 2002/03 when he got 49 returns (25 goals & 24 assists) in 37 appearances

To put that haul into context - even Salah’s 300 point season was “only” 44 returns (32 goals & 12 assists)

Bergkamp actually got 30 assists during that 5 season Henry run of madness - not sure how many of the 30 were for Henry’s 129 goals in that time though

FPL aside I don't remember Henry scoring too many devmcisive goals in big games or dragging Arsenal to victory from the jaws of defeat. Drogba was known to turn up in the big games, Gerrard too. Bale has none that for Wales, can't remember him doing too often for Spurs or Real though I think he turned a CL final for Real with a goal? But for FPL points make prizes so Henry wins that group easily. Was Bale classed as a defender for many of his Spurs season's? Amazing in his final season there but, depending on his assists and baps prob decent in FPL for 2010/11 and 2011/12 if he was getting midfielder points.

Outside of FPL, I think to call him anything other than one of the greatest strikers of all time would be unbelievably harsh

Four Premier League golden boots (Still the record to this day), Two Premier leagues, an FA Cup, the invincibles, two World Cup finals, winning one, two champions league finals, winning one, did the treble at Barca...

And even stepping back into a pure FPL perspective, it’s not probably really fair to compare him to Stevie G, Henry was on a different plane output-wise

    3. Bedknobs and Boomsticks

I don't think Gérard and the Drog were regular FPL essentials. Sure they had a couple of good seasons each, but mostly they tended to be a little bit disappointing compared to there reputations.

Hmmm 3 seasons out of 5 he did more than 16 assists and added at least 6 goals to that ...
He might be the best assists player of all the players listed in any group.

And CS to Baines and that’s a point more than an assist (which he got his fair share off) and a point per goal more (which he got on penos he rarely missed)

Ivanovic and Lampard. Van Persie was a good goalscorer but peak Ivanovic had the cleansheet potential and attacking intent comno that, for me, has him up there in the great FPL defender picks.

Remember when FPL had that Euros/World Cup where you could pick some players who were in both the PL and the Euros/WC?

    That was odd.
And odd they never did it again.

I appreciate its probably silly but why not huh?

    Krul (Button)
    TAA Doherty Soyuncu (Holgate Stephens)
    Salah Bruno KDB Barnes (Dendo)
    Ings Auba Jimenez

1.2itb 2ft. Best moves? Can potentially do 2. Have all chips bar TC.

    A. Button to McCarthy/Pope (have Krul)
    B. Holgate/Stephens to Taylor/SU defender
    C. Soyuncu to MU defender
    D. Ings to DCL

      Anyways, for me:

      A - Lampard + RVP
      B - Henry + Gerrard
      C - Kane + Drogba
      D - Ronaldo + Hazard
      E - Rooney + Vidic
F - Suarez + Terry (Gutted to leave Dempsey out, a loyal servant to my FPL team)
      G - Baines + Fabregas
      H - Aguero + Salah

Alonso never, ever did well for me, and I don't remember owning Tevez.

Interestingly, despite my love for the guy, I don't remember owning Drogba ever.. Can't think who I would have owned instead though, my team must have been Rooney dominated

Group F for me (Suarez aside)
Clint never really did it for me, don't know who McCauly is and my main memory of JT is buying him on a free for the last game of the season and him breaking his arm 30 mins in.

Gareth McAuley had a stand out season for WBA three years ago when he bagged 6 goals when classified as a defender, shouldn't have been anywhere near this list in my opinion.

There are obviously a number of clubs not represented on that list for being presumably not so good. In your opinion, who was the best FPL asset from the following 'regular' FPL teams?

    A. Newcastle
    B. West Ham
    C. Villa
    D. Southampton
    E. Other regular PL side (your call)

Don't think he was that good for FPL, but I wasn't playing then. Only would have had 2 seasons out of him max, don't suppose anyone around here remembers his price? 02/03 and 03/04.

You are probably right, with regards FPL. But as a long term Telegraph fantasy player, he was very consistent for all of his career.

Oh yeah no question there - just I think the focus is heavily on FPL, which only started in 2002 🙂 Shame it started so late, would have been interesting to see how he'd be priced around 95/96/97. Would surely break the highest price records.

What would you do with this?

    McCarthy
    Trent Doherty Alonso
    Salah KDB Fernandes Sarr
    Auba Vardy Jota

There's no hurry to play football any time soon. We all know it's going to take several months. Just be quiet and stay at home until we get over the peak.

      From BBC Football ....

"Coronavirus: What next for football as cracks begin to appear?
      By Simon Stone
      BBC Sport
6 hours ago From the sectionFootball
      Bournemouth's Vitality Stadium
Gates at Bournemouth are locked after it was announced football was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic
English football is heading towards its third weekend without games and, with no end in sight to the lockdown, the first cracks are beginning to appear in what had previously been a united front.

In the "professional game", which covers the Premier League and Football League, there is now an acceptance there will be no immediate resumption.

The Premier League clubs are due to meet again on 3 April, when it is almost certain the current postponement of all games until 30 April will be extended again. That will take it past the official end of the EFL league season and towards the last round of Premier League fixtures, which was supposed to be on 17 May.

That would be getting very close to the point where the game has to restart if it is to meet the loose 30 June deadline which European football's governing body is working towards as the end of the 2019-20 campaign.

Lower down, the FA's decision to declare the season below National League level null and void, and scrap promotion and relegation at all levels of non-league football from step three down, has caused fury.

Premier League can go it alone

First of all, the good news.

Although Premier League officials are heavily involved in discussions with Uefa, European leagues and clubs about how the game deals with the coronavirus crisis, there is no obligation on them to take the same course as any other league.

So, if Italy or Spain, two of the countries hardest hit at present, abandoned Serie A or La Liga, the Premier League would not have to follow suit.

What the Premier League is reliant on is the goodwill of broadcasters and sponsors. The longer it goes without matches being played, the less practical it becomes to simply pick up where the season left off.

Playing on beyond 30 June is a headache for Liverpool, Newcastle and Watford in particular, given they are changing shirt manufacturers - but clubs who are changing sponsors also have a problem. Deals almost always start in July, with massive marketing campaigns being done around them.

Finishing the season at all costs is a laudable ambition - and may yet come to pass - but it has immense complications. There is unease among some about the speed some club executives have started to talk about the game being played again - one said privately football might help cheer the country up.

But with, literally, hundreds of millions of pounds at risk, the consensus, for now, remains to look for the finishing line.

In that sense, all options are open for discussion. Including playing multiple games on the same day at a neutral ground, if it could be made sterile and an agreement could be reached over the medical staff needed to be in attendance."
