Wildcard activity increases amid uncertainty over FPL plans beyond Gameweek 38

Just one more regulation Gameweek remains before we reach the end of the mapped-out road in Fantasy Premier League.

With less than a week to go before the Gameweek 38 deadline, Fantasy managers are still none-the-wiser about how FPL plan to accommodate the outstanding Premier League fixtures should we be in a position to restart in June.

FPL may be, in turn, waiting on the outcome of the vote and further discussions on Project Restart before committing to any concrete plan.

But the ongoing uncertainty has led to much debate and conjecture in the Fantasy community as to what lies in store after the final scheduled Gameweek of 2019/20 has been and gone.

There seem to be three possible scenarios being speculated on at present:

  1. Gameweek 38 will absorb all 92 remaining fixtures
  2. Additional Gameweeks will be added to the game
  3. FPL will end after Gameweek 38

Those in camps two and three were perhaps encouraged by the Premier League’s most recent update in April, which stated that “all players will earn zero points” in Gameweeks 34-38 and that a further announcement on any outstanding fixtures would follow.

There are, of course, some FPL managers who believe the first of the above scenarios will happen.

That would perhaps explain why Wildcard activity was slightly on the rise ahead of Gameweek 37, with a minority of Fantasy bosses potentially gearing up for a ‘blind’ Bench Boost on what should have been the final weekend of 2019/20.

That would be a high-risk strategy based on the little we know now but, hopefully, we will hear some word from Fantasy Premier League – one way or another – before we get to next Sunday afternoon’s deadline.

There were a total of 374 Wildcards played in the run-up to Gameweek 37, a relatively small number but still more than we had seen in any of the preceding five ’empty’ Gameweeks and over 300 more than were activated in Gameweek 36.

TRANSFERS

During the downtime, we have been keeping track of the transfer ins and outs on a weekly basis.

There were 46,060 transfers made ahead of the Gameweek 37 deadline, a small drop of around 2,000 on the previous week and a fraction of what we would ordinarily see.

The top ten for purchases and sales in Gameweek 37 are listed below, with their respective positions in the Gameweek 36 tables listed in the final column to see how trends are changing.

For the second week running, Marcus Rashford (£8.8m) took top spot in the transfers in table.

His teammate Bruno Fernandes (£8.6m) rose to second, meanwhile.

The top ten were unchanged in terms of the players involved but the order did alter, with Tammy Abraham (£7.5m), Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) and Jack Grealish (£6.4m) among the risers.

Go sort them out Scout. Go all Piers Morgan on them! Disgusting from FPL. We need an update.

Given the PL may resume soon, I have to admit I haven't missed FPL that much, Life has been much better in terms of less frustrations over a game which has little impact in your life. I love FPL, but I also enjoyed the time without it, maybe I was preoccupied with the virus and all that it brought forward. Anyway, if it does return, then expect back the euphoria football brings but also the frustration of a stinking gameweek. Bring it on!

Seems the BB38 that was first mooted weeks ago is gaining traction. FPL has been silent throughout on whether the game can accommodate extra gameweeks. The minute they didn't freeze it in-situ, and allowed transfers to continue, they condemned it to the three given scenarios.

In my opinion, FPL have been explicitly clear in their statement that GW38 will be no different to GW30-37.

      https://twitter.com/Legomane_FPL/status/1258871743596429313?s=20

"Given each fixture in these Gameweeks [inclusive of GW38] has been postponed, all players will [WILL] earn zero points"

So, if FPL returns for the completion of 2019/20 season, either we’re looking at additional gameweeks, FPL abandoned or a separate mini-game for the run in. Mega GW38 makes zero sense from a marketing (or diplomacy toward managers) point of view. Don’t waste your BB imo.

They haven't been clear - otherwise you wouldn't have needed to insert your paraphrased bit in there. I would prefer it if you were in charge of FPL because the bit you've added would make it clear.

Yep that part of their statement is very black & white - i.e. in GW38 = 0 points

Obviously they can also go back on that & everything changes, but taking them at their word it looks very unlikely that there'll be any type of mega GW - either season ends this weekend, or they add extra Gameweeks.

They could of course possibly do a Mega-GW39 - but why stop at adding one extra gameweek, when they could attract multiple times the volume of clicks & advertising revenue by adding more Gameweeks

For my money, the survival of football as we know it is in big trouble though - If (hopefully not when) project restart gets derailed we're in a situation where next season can't be played either, until a vaccine which could be a year away or may or may not even work

I would love to see a before and after to be 100% sure, but I think the 'Given each fixture in these Gameweeks' was added once the second set of GWs (35-38) was no longer viable.

I'd hate a minigame as it would absolutely mess up any mini leagues. Probably best they just call it as-is and asterisk it on the GW history page for future years.

On a separate note, do you not feel if they were going to add more gameweeks they would have stopped the cup instead of putting it to a virtual coin toss ( if that is what they are doing still)

You could also look at it from the point of view that FPL have been silent on whether they can accommodate one game week of 92 fixtures. We just don't know. We need an update from them before Sunday otherwise it's just pure guesswork.

It's very risky given that FPL would have to make a U turn on the statement they have already given, and even if it comes off it would feel like a hollow victory to me, resulting in a rank that doesn't truly reflect the season you have had.

I think it would be a sweet victory. FPL is all educated guesswork. If someone went massively against the grain and gambled that the bench boost would pay off, and it did, then they'd deserve a huge boost in rankings.

A lot of people transferred in a load of Arsenal and City players just before lock-down, probably not mentioning it in their various FF chat groups, in an attempt to gain points on their rivals in mini-leagues.

I actually just don't think FPL is a priority and the time will pass without an announcement. It just depends on whether they count the final matches or null GW38 after a week.

It's off the scale in terms of potential distortion, but people still choose to use their second wildcard, bench boost etc. earlier on in the season, despite knowing there are usually double GWs in GW3*.

Frankly I can't see it happening as the number of people logging into the site must be minimal.

I've said this before but adding extra GWs is imo the only fair way of completing the FPL season. I think that unless FPL cannot for whatever reason add these extra weeks to the game then the BB/TC chips left are the stumbling block from the mega 38 perspective. They don't want the controversy and they will - as stated - have their statement ripped to shreds. If there was a means of somehow limiting BB/TC to just 2 rounds of the rescheduled fixtures that would be the nearest 'leveller' but cannot see how they do it in the format.

This is why them just calling it a day on Sunday just seems the likely shout to me. They are then not contradicting themselves and can say that they just don't have the sufficient information or resources to keep going regardless of a restart.

    1. Wild Rover
      • 13 Years

They're not worried about controversy or having their statement ripped to shreds. Casuals are long gone and die hards will be back next season regardless.

Well yes I suspect website traffic over integrity wins every time. But I think there will still be FPL interest if there are growing signs of a PL restart. People are stuck at home doing jack all and would welcome a return to a mentally challenging pastime.

The game is dead anyway. Whatever happens it isnt going to be fair for different reasons like Epic said.

Creating new gws only awards people on top of it and fpl tend to cater for casual players as thats the audience where extra numbers come from . Like WR says die hards will be back no matter what.

Extended 38 just hinders the more cautious players who didnt want to risk wasting a chip. Once again = unfair

Ending the game and keeping the ranks as are isn't fair as folk have chips saved for the end game and giving people more chips now won't happen and would be massively unfair. Arguably the least fair option of all

Cancelling the game is unfair on those doing well.

Whatever like i say, they owe us nothing. I am going for the cancelling too as i think that affects the least amount of people and gives them time to be ready for next season with an extra line in the rules section stating what will happen if this happens again.

There is no 'fair' way now. No matter what they do it will impact some people negatively.

So many people feel they are "owed" an answer about the future of FPL. It's a free game. They owe you nothing. You will come crawling back no matter how many times they let you down. There is the possiblity that they don't know yet either. This isn't something anyone could prepare for.

    1. HTL
      • 5 Years

I don't think it's as straight forward as 'owed' or a sense of entitlement. Just that as people have ploughed hours into the game for the first 3/4s of the season, it would be nice to have some more communication as to what is technically possible in the game. Would stop the speculation and possibly drive traffic back up as people log back in to see if situation X or Y have come to fruition.

Just in the same way as the PL are outlining how they could technically finish the season, whether it happens or not.

Personally, I was going to take next year off anyway; this year and last have been the first occasion I've actually put any serious time into FPL - season ranks have gone well accordingly but it saps the fun out of watching football and getting wound up when some spurious Brighton midfielder scores a brace isn't healthy.

It’s a free game but they generate revenue from the ads and more importantly have an installed base of members which is the most important metric for a website. If they simply don’t care about their members, they’ll upset them and lose members.

Considering it’s been 2 months since the postponements, I don’t think “this isn’t something anyone could prepare for” is a vaild argument. There are 3 only options and even just ending the fpl season as it is is one of them (and the least burdensome one for them), but they have fo communicate it if that’s what they intend to do.

FPL have to U-turn anyway. They either have to clarify their less than clear update last month, or add extra gameweeks which goes against the rules that they wrote. Currently we have to pick a U-turn without knowing which one it will be.

The FPL rules were written before an unforeseeable event happened, so obviously don't take that Coronavirus into account. The statement regarding all players will earn zero points was made when they knew that PL games could only take place when it was safe to do so. Big difference.

It's still a U-turn, whichever they decide. But you seem to be on the 'rewrite the rules' U-turn because the rules were written before the virus - That's a decent educated guess and there's nothing wrong with that. I seem like I might be a poster-boy for the Mega-38 GW. I'm not - it's a terrible way to finish the game and totally unfair. but the reason I think they'll go for it is because FPL Towers have a history of sticking with their model regardless - they don't provide any innovative help to the player - they get a lot of complaining e-mails but just flat bat them back - stock answer that it's part of the game, just get on with it. And I think they'll do the same this time, though it is unfair and seems to many to lack commercial sense. But you're right - this situation is unprecedented, so they might put some effort in to working out a decent solution, even if they don't need to.

Best case scenario - mega 38
2nd best - extra GWs and we get some FPL fixtures played, I might be able to use my saved WC for them.
3rd best - game ends as is.

There was a suggestion at one point that not only would all remaining matches be played at neutral grounds, but little or no advance notice would be given of the dates or venues for each match, in case groups of supporters decided to turn up outside the neutral grounds on which their team was playing if they knew where and when that might be.
I haven't seen this possibility mentioned for some time, so presumably it won't happen, but if it had then it might not have been possible for FPL to know the order in which the remaining fixtures would be played and which ones would be played in the next week, so a mega game-week 38 or 39 for all remaining fixtures might have been appropriate.
FPL Towers may be waiting for further announcements from the Premier League about whether it will be possible for matches to take place at the normal home venues or whether it will still be necessary to play them neutral grounds, and about whether we will be given much notice of the dates of these fixtures.
But it would be good for FPL Towers to issue a statement before the GW38 deadline making it absolutely clear whether they do have the capability to add further game-weeks if required, and also whether they have the capability to handle a single game-week of 92 matches if that is required. They have had plenty of time since GW30 to investigate these questions, so they must surely know by now whether or not these things are possible. They have also known for some time that there was no chance of the Premier League restarting before the end of May and therefore no chance of any more matches being played on or before Sunday 17th May, which would have been the last day of the season.

The neutral ground idea is already dead in the water, Khan's comments just add to the argument for it to be ended now. Not to mention the growing number of players saying or suggesting that they don't want to play.

I think the next predictable move is effectively threatening players over pay if they revolt and don't play. No play no pay etc.

I doubt most PL clubs let alone the rest of the football pyramid would be able to pay full wages for a lengthy period of time. Likes of West Ham have players over 100k a week.

Worth noting that while clubs prefer playing in usual home and away venues, there's a seemingly majority (14-6 required) to play in neutral venues if the government don't allow usual home and away venues.

Unless I'm mistaken the latest action is that they're taking back the idea of playing games in usual home and away stadiums back to the government.

I don't envisage a scenario where loads of fans turn up outside a stadium, particularly if the games are available to watch on tele. The only potential issue may be if Liverpool were theoretically to secure the title at Anfield, I think there will be people (sadly!) who turn up outside and party etc. And that would go for every clubs fans in that position. Something would need to be put in place to avoid that scenario IMHO.

The government has allowed unlimited visits to the park provided you are 2m apart - so maybe a 2m apart distance celebration with tapes and cones to separate fans.

It sounds ridiculous and I'm 100% against it, but human beings do stupid things.

Sure the government are then going to pass the buck back to the PL again if form is anything to go by.

I can envisage a scenario where thousands of United fans turn up outside a stadium incognito where Liverpool are playing in a last gasp attempt to get it all called off Berbs. 😛

Yep I'd imagine that's what the government do and PL eventually allow home and away venues.

To be honest restarting the season doesn't sit well with me, I'd be in favour of curtailing it which is the back up to Project Restart.

And haha, Liverpool* get used to it 😉

I have Boly and have Brought in Lundstram and Doherty in recent weeks and am deciding whether to keep or move to Saiss or Egan, Egan would be security for Sheffield United defence if Lundstram hasn’t fully got his place back or Saiss coz he seems better for bonus and attacking returns over Boly and cheaper

Thanks for the response! I did look at Saiss before I posted, thinking he was around 4.4, but saw he's up to 4.6 so he'd only save me 0.1 (can only sell Boly for 4.7). I guess if he is better for points, then maybe I should consider him anyway. Probably will get Lundstram though.

As far as Egan, I tried the SHU double-up in February and it didn't really work for me. If you are going to double up on one defence I would rather have double Wolves.

I'd love to hear how many people on here want the FPL season to end primarily because they are having a bad season and scrapping it from record would suit that end alone. On the flip side same question to those wanting a restart as they are having a good one.

This isn't a dig at anyone. I'm only at 136k so I'm not really heavily invested in either camp. I'd just love to gather up the pro and anti comments and do a quick crosscheck on current rank 🙂

You are right Gary. It will be a lot with vested personal interest. I am one of them. If Fpl confirm that there won't be any more points earned, I won't be that match bothered about PL. I am on course for my best ever season and highest ever cash win in ML. You would understand why I want FPL to restart.

Nothing wrong with honesty. I'd like it to go on to try and get a reasonable sub 100k finish.

I'm also our ML admin currently holding onto prize money. I'd like the game to restart just so I can allocate prizes with less controversy. If the season ends I might have to do a half prizes/half NHS donation thing or something. A lot of my 45 team league are friends of friends so getting their stake money back would be a pain.

The most important league for me is the one with all my immediate circle of friends and some family are in and i was well placed to win it again for the first time since the 16/17 season seen as the guy leading it had skunked off all his chips and i was only 5 points behind with the 3 chips intact.

I was in 127k and fancied myself to at least break into the top 50k bracket or if things went really well for me even a prestigious top 10k finish. So in the greater scheme of things i was having an ok season.

I am in favor of calling it a day for the PL and any other unnecessary sporting events or large gatherings for selfish reasons though.I have many members of my immediate, extended family and friends that work for both the HSE here in Ireland and the NHS over in the UK along with elderly members of the family and anything no mater how small a chance that could put them in the way of unnecessary danger i will oppose.

I'm 2399 OR, top of my cash ML. The admin hasn't said what will happen, but there is an added complexity in that he has paid out Manager of the Month prizes for Aug > February, so it's not as simple as just giving everyone their entry back.

Those at the bottom of the league would probably vote to get the bulk of their money back, those at the top would want their prizes.

It either needs to be rolled forward into next season's competition (and scrap manager of the month awards), which I wouldn't be in favour of as MOTM prizes have been given out for the season so far, or the whole thing donated to charity IMO.

With regards the actual game, I'd be happy for it to be frozen as-is, even if it means an asterisk for this season.

        Nice season sir.

I have also given out cash (I hand out small prizes in 6 week chunks and ran an Xmas cup) so I am in same boat. I think one good thing about the virus is that giving some of the prize money to the NHS etc. feels like the right thing to do. I'm in 2nd spot and hope that by donating half my winnings to them that the others in the top spots do likewise.

My rank is currently 143k which although has improved significantly from before Xmas when I was around 1.3 million, I still consider it a bad season. Nowhere near the top 10k which is my benchmark for a good season and not even inside the top 100k. So I would be happy to see an abandoned FPL season and striking it from the records.

Very much like my outlook really, 10k is still the mark even with more players in the game.

Like you I think the season should be scrapped from the record if not finished, good OR bad ranks cannot be justified with close to a quarter of the season to go and chips still in the hands of many.

Please consider adding the VPL to the membership benefits for next season.

If it mimics the actual fixtures - but runs 2 weeks ahead - midweek say - it will give another strategy tool.

I actually ran three Wolves home fixtures just to see what I'd get. Neto started two, while Jota started the other. I have money in the bank to go Firmino to Auba (c) for free, and keep Jota, and that's what I'm leaning towards doing. But I could alternatively do Firmino to Laca, and Jota to Jimenez for -4. I think I'll give Jota one more GW. If he doesn't start today, shame on me for not reacting sooner, and I'll move on.

I think most people who are wildcarding would hope to end up with that team, or thereabouts. There's so much uncertainty anyway, at least you have 15 regular starters and very little rotation risk outside of unavoidable injuries or managers deciding to completely rest their squads because the season is over (Klopp might do this if it means his key players get a proper summer break).
