Key Everton attackers blank again as FPL defenders grab the points at Norwich

Norwich 0-1 Everton

  • Goals: Michael Keane (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Lucas Digne (£5.7m)
  • Bonus Points: Keane x3, Digne x2, Mason Holgate x1 (£4.3m)

A rare goal from Michael Keane (£5.2m) was enough to see off Norwich City as Everton’s efficient, if rather drab, emergence from lock down continued.

The centre-half’s winner, a flick header from a Lucas Digne (£5.7m) corner, came in the 55th minute of a contest that had more than a hint of a pre-season friendly about it – lots of sunshine and mistakes, precious little intensity and quality in the final third.

Keane’s second goal of the season, a second straight clean sheet and the maximum bonus award brought in a season-high 15 points for his 1.9% ownership in Fantasy Premier League.

But most Fantasy eyes were elsewhere, with 10.8% thoroughly enjoying an 11-point haul from Digne and a canny 2.1% still pulling in the cut-price points offered by Mason Holgate (£4.3m).

Everton’s fixtures are pleasant enough to suggest further defensive returns are there for the taking. This is a unit, after all, that has had little trouble shutting down both Norwich’s and Liverpool’s attacks since the resumption of football.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti was keen to praise the defensive work of the team as a whole.

“The teamwork, not only the defenders but the strikers are doing well, is important. When you are able to work together and show good spirit defensively, you can keep clean sheets. The players are tired and that is normal. But their physical condition is really good. In these two games, we had no injuries. Next week we will recover some players – Mina and Sidibe.” – Carlo Ancelotti

His reference to the return of two defenders might set off a few alarms in the camps of those owning Holgate and Seamus Coleman (£5.3m), but there are also worries for managers with Richarlison (£8.3m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.5m) in their teams.

The pair, owned by 10.9% and 13.8% respectively, again played as a front two at Carrow Road and they dominated the goal attempt statistics, having nine of the 21 total shots in the match.

But the fixture produced not a single big chance and most efforts were relatively speculative mid to long-range attempts, with Calvert-Lewin missing the best chance of the match when he steered a free header wide following an excellent cross from the industrious Alex Iwobi (£5.6m).

Everton have set up to play fairly deep and with minimal attacking input from their full-backs. That has meant they are hard to break down, but lack significant offensive bite.

The club’s next two fixtures – Leicester at home, Spurs away – are unlikely to prompt a change in that tactic, leaving a lot of FPL managers invested in attackers living on scraps at present.

As for Norwich, they are as good as relegated and coach Daniel Farke is clearly keen to experiment with his line-up as he left two of the season’s bigger hitters – Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) and Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) on the bench yesterday.

He explained his decision post-match.

“Right now, we have a strange situation – five weeks and two games per week. It was pretty hot out there and without a proper pre-season, you have to rotate.” – Daniel Farke

Even so, that would have hurt a lot of FPL managers – Pukki is owned by 12.9%, Cantwell by 18.7% – although the pair probably feature heavily in a lot of ‘ghost ship’ teams.

But Fantasy investment in any of the Canaries players looks decidedly unwise with trips to Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City still to come before the season is done.

Norwich City (4-2-3-1): Krul; Aarons, Godfrey, Klose, Lewis (Cantwell 86′); McLean Tettey (Vrancic 79′); Rupp (Buendia 71′), Duda (Pukki 71′), Hernandez (Idah 79′); Drmic.

Everton (4-4-2): Pickford: Coleman, Keane, Holgate, Digne: Iwobi (Gordon 90′), Davies (Sigurdsson 45′), Gomes, Bernard (Baines 87′); Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison (Kean 79′).

Would you BB with a bench made up of these superstars?

    McCarthy - Lascelles - Højbjerg - Long

Don't know why I have 3 SOU players, but looking at their fixtures it's either now against WAT or wait till GW37 when they play BOU.

What's your take? Got 1 FT to change things a bit up. Thinking of maybe Hojbjerg --> Saka

I am thinking to BB with a similar bench:

      McCarthy - Lascelles - Taylor - Saka

It feels wrong because it's not a DGW but... we won't have any so I want to take it out of the way.

I guess it's better to wait till SOU play BOU in GW37..

I would argue that with an abundance of premium mids, nobody should be higher than 12. Salah Mane KDB and Sterling won't be going anywhere, you've then got Son, Bruno and Ziyech knocking on the 10m door, and potentially also Aubameyang and Rashford if they're repositioned.

Aurier has the same returns as robbo

I do expect that he won't start against Liverpool, but say he does, what would you expect from him? He's hardly going to tear apart the champions. On the other hand Saka has Norwich at home which is on paper the easiest fixture in the league.

Looks like it’s between Bournemouth and West Ham for the final spot in The Championship next season, then?

Bournemouth might get some points from the Newcastle game given the travel and the FA Cup QF against Man City.

I thought West Ham's players might react well to having no fans, but it doesn't seem the case.

Aston Villa could potentially get no more points this season.

        I think they (Watford) will.

West Ham look like having one of those seasons they have every so often when they really shouldn’t get relegated but they will anyway.

I want Bournemouth to stay up, but they look awful right now. Norwich know they’re gone. Villa will be a different proposition in the Championship next season without Grealish.

Wait and see him tonight. Woeful first game, improved last game but a sharper Aubameyang would have scored. Had plenty of chances so that's a striker missing chances rather than one making chances. Something not right at Arsenal at the moment. Renewing Luiz for another year is unlikely to boost morale.

Start of next season, triple Pool will be the first players into my team. TAA, Salah and Mane.

Then build the rest of the squad from there.

What is happening with City's ban from Europe? If there is no CL for them next season then most likely not as much rotation. Will depend on who stays and who gets added in the transfer window for them but no CL will be a bit of a issue in the transfer window for players wanting to sign.

Which is all well and good, but you have to still buy 12 more players, and whether they start or not they still will cost you at the bare minimum £4m for a defender and £4.5 for a mid.

It does all add up, and goodness knows what you’ll need to pay next season for even below average strikers. Bare in mind Jimi ain’t going to be £8m bargain next season either.

It always sounds great pre season, until the game reopens and, once you put those 3 in your team you actually see what you have left that you can pick with the rest of your budget.

That’s usually when reality hits and compromises are made.

It’s like those home building programs my wife watches where everyone thinks they’ll build a mansion for £200k, then once it’s finished you find out they spent another £150k on top of that because their original budget was nowhere near realistic enough to build the house they dreamed of.

Early thinking on this, but from my perspective the CL season 2019/20 will have some impact as well. If City plays up to the end it means no break for their stars. Despite the lockdown break I think we have to handle this the same like a World Cup. What I'm trying to say is that the players who play at the CL finals will be tired latest by xmas, so I would be careful with using them. Liverpool triple up could make sense, but I really like the look of Wolves as well

    Triple Man. Utd. attack?

The Red Devils have the best fixture run from now till the end of the season. With B. Fernandes in most teams, FPL managers have mostly opted for a defender + either Martial/Rashford alongside. With the Reds offering a wealth of nailed budget attacking options , should triple attack be the way going forward? Once Liverpool clinch the league, rotation is likely amongst their attacking options and we already know about Pep Roulette.

I can imagine there's a fair few with the Rashford / Bruno / Maguire (DDG/AWB) combination out there who are looking at Martial for example after his impressive display.

I had Rash and Bruno and I added on Martial last night (as I just wanted rid of Alli at all costs) in a moment of impetuousness. Think its too unbalanced now but on reflection, the player out of the 3 that i would remove if i had a choice is Bruno. Think Pogba's re-appearance is after throwing a spanner in that works. I think from 31+ onwards, Rashford & Martial outscore Bruno.

Why is rotation likely amongst Liverpool? They're not in the FA cup of UCL. They're playing to beat the points record and Mo is on for golden boot.

Man Utd on the other hand have an FA cup tie away to Norwich on Saturday followed by a midweek PL game afterwards. The FA cup game is unfortunately after this gameweek deadline.

IMO two of B Fernandes, Martial and Rash is the way forward.

      TL;DR: No.

Jesus... are you out of you F-ing mind?

He could have had two assists at least yesterday and almost scored a FK. Was their best and most dangerous player for the previous 6 or 7 games. Pogba starts once, Bruno has his first average game and it’s sell sell sell.

Got him for the 1st time for yesterday’s game and captained him I guess?

Pretty much. I'm so frustrated with United's assets - I had Martial for 16 gameweeks this season and he got me 5 goals in total. I always felt lucky just to even get a solitary return from him with no bonus points.

On my wildcard I get Bruno because I saw he only blanked in his first game, and of course he f-in blanks. I watched most of the game and I never had the feeling he would do anything in open play. Based on what I saw I'll be amazed if he scores another goal that's not a penalty this season.

I kind of agree with that last point. Bruno was the standout pick before the lockdown, but right now I would put Martial and Rashford ahead of him. And for me at least it will come down to choosing Bruno + Jesus or Mahrez + Rashford on WC. Mahrez's upside over Jesus is a lot more than Bruno's upside over Rashford, plus it's 0.8m cheaper, i.e. the difference between KdB and Sterling, or Sterling and Mane

My comments are of course mostly out of frustration - it's pretty depressing to have kept faith with Martial for so long only to see him outscored by Bruno when he arrived at the club, and then to wildcard Bruno in my team and have Martial score a hat-trick. It's just one of those seasons where every decision goes the wrong way, a bit like I considered Martial and Digne but ended up with Sterling and Lascelles!

It's Bruno, Martial and one other

Rashford - maybe but I prefer Martial
Pogba - could punt on him but Bruno is on pens

So I still think a defender is the way forward. but its a close call

I think there is a lot of value on the attack triple up. There is going to be very little rotation as long as they are chasing that CL spot and I much rather prefer Wolves, Everton or Newcastle for valuable defender picks

Have Bruno and Martial but now slightly torn on having opted for Greenwood as my bench striker. Suspect he'll play enough to serve that function more than well but perhaps it marks a missed opportunity to get in on more regular points.

Unless he does enough to oust James as first choice for the rest of the season, of course.

I had Rashford, Bruno and AWB going into this GW. The thing with Martial is that he is injury prone and sometimes looks disinterested and that's what put me off. However I would be tempted to hold for this week since I want to see whether Pogba is having an impact on Bruno as a FPL Asset. If yes then I would switch them otherwise I'll be tempted to upgrade AWB to martial against Bournemouth

I wouldn't triple in attack, at least not when the defence is also doing well. Currently on Bruno / Martial / AWB, but might lose Bruno to get Rashford in on WC in a couple of GWs. It will all depend on which Man City attacker I choose. Either Bruno + Jesus or Mahrez + Rashford

Differentials needed to rise: Pogba, Bruno and Martial for me.

Might swap Bruno for Rashford in 2 GW's if it turns out Pogba is limiting Bruno.

I can see the Pickford pick though Id go Patricio on it. I dont like the Giroud play as he will be alternating. OTher than that, its decent.

Cheers and I get your Patricio vibe but I'm 0.1m short!

I think Giroud is fat frank's first choice now and their fixtures are so good. Can easily trade to DCL or Greenwood if it doesn;t transpire??

Giroud the only real problem here I think (although it could work out, I'd expect him to start 1 out of 2. You might need to move Ings on fairly sharpish also as his fixures turn.

Agree Patricio shout, but overall the team is very template, and that's not a bad thing,

Kun and Leno are prob out for the season. We knew that before this gw. That hit could have paid off this week with those fixtures.

When you look at the games so far, theres only about 4 investable teams right now in my mind: Man U, Liverpool, City (if you can get it right), Wolves. And a mention for Spurs and Everton. So, in that scenario with a squad of 15 to pick, you are going to have quite a few double ups and triple ups.
