Hasenhuttl to aid Ings’ quest for the Golden Boot as Watford’s FPL assets flop

Watford 1-3 Southampton

  • Goals: Jan Bednarek (£4.4m) own-goal | Danny Ings (£7.3m) x2, James Ward-Prowse (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Jose Holebas (£4.6m) | Will Smallbone (£4.5m), Che Adams (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Ings x3, Ward-Prowse x2, Oriol Romeu (£4.3m) x1

Sunday’s match at Vicarage Road was our bi-weekly reminder that football, and Fantasy Premier League, rarely goes according to the script.

Mid-table Southampton, sitting 10 points clear of the drop zone heading into Gameweek 32+, were meant to be in ‘on the beach’ territory, and Watford, hovering precariously above the bottom three, were the ones supposed to be scrapping for their lives.

But the Saints were hungrier, sharper, quicker to the second ball and just generally better than their hosts in every department this weekend, inflicting a fully deserved defeat on Nigel Pearson’s side.

Watford might well tick the ‘something to play for’ box with regards to motivation but they have also won just one of their last ten league fixtures (improbably against Liverpool), a run that includes six meetings with teams currently ranked tenth or below.

The triple-header against Norwich City, Newcastle United and West Ham United in Gameweeks 34+ to 36+ still holds great appeal but owners of the Hornets’ Fantasy assets are now facing the eternal ‘form versus fixtures’ quandary, with Watford ranked a lowly 18th when clubs are filtered by their last ten matches.

Pearson’s troops didn’t even manage a single shot on target on Sunday, with their goal coming courtesy of Jan Bednarek (£4.4m); the Polish stopper turning a Jose Holebas (£4.6m) cross past his own goalkeeper late in the game.

Ismaila Sarr (£6.3m) perhaps looked the likeliest to make things happening, seeing a close-range shot blocked just after the interval and twice getting into his now customary promising positions on the byline, but even he was well below-par and his searing pre-lockdown form seems a distant memory.

Troy Deeney (£6.2m) appeared more interested in winning free-kicks than staying on his feet and hasn’t forced any goalkeeper into a save since the Premier League resumed, while the home side’s hoofball tactics played right into the hands of Bednarek and the galumphing Jannik Vestergaard (£4.5m).

The hosts were poor at the other end, too, guilty of backing off their opponents and, in the case of Southampton’s second strike, gift-wrapping goals.

Pearson said of his side’s display after the game:

We were second best for too long. You can’t concede goals like we have, give gifts to the opponents. It makes the job harder.

We have to go back to showing a cohesion as a group of people. At the moment it is frustrating, because we are not achieving the performances we know we are capable of.

Southampton have been difficult to fathom this season.

Ranked fifth when clubs are filtered by their away results (this was their eighth success on the road in 2019/20), the Saints are rock-bottom when we look at home fixtures.

Their Jekyll-and-Hyde displays, something Hasenhuttl bemoaned in midweek, is perfectly encapsulated by their form in 2020: played 12, won six, lost six.

Sunday’s match was the Saints at their best, with the visitors aggressive in the press, tidy on the ball and robust at the back.

Bednarek and Vestergaard were superb at centre-half, blocking everything on the ground and imperious in the air, and right-back Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.4m) built on a promising 45 minutes at Arsenal with another impressive showing here.

The ever-present James Ward-Prowse (£5.7m), who hasn’t missed a minute of league football this season, showcased his set-piece expertise with a brilliant 81st-minute free-kick, meanwhile.

Admittedly not much of threat from open play these days as one of Hasenhuttl’s ‘number sixes’, seven of the nine goals and assists he has registered this season have been from dead-ball situations.

Onto the main event, though, and someone who has mostly been a reliable pick even through Southampton’s rollercoaster year.

Danny Ings (£7.3m) was by far the most-owned Fantasy asset in this fixture and he rewarded his remaining owners by scoring his 17th and 18th Premier League goals of the season, registering his joint-highest FPL haul of 2019/20 in the process.

Having racked up 177 minutes in Saints’ first two post-restart fixtures, many had thought that Ings was a candidate for rotation on Sunday.

Indeed, Hasenhuttl freshened up his side by making five changes, with the in-form Stuart Armstrong (£5.2m) benched because of worries over fatigue – how many times have we heard the Southampton boss use this reasoning for managing Ings’ minutes?

But Ings did start and went on to move within one goal of Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) in the race for the Golden Boot, with his first strike against Watford in particular illustrating his clinical edge.

His second goal, which stemmed from a poor Ben Foster (£4.9m) throw out, was Ings at his predatory, off-the-ball best; this wasn’t the first instance in which we have seen him force or capitalise on a defensive error this season.

The icing on the cake for Ings’ owners came in Hasenhuttl’s post-match press conference, with the Southampton boss suggesting he would field his striker (although he didn’t explicitly say ‘start)’ in all six of his side’s remaining games to help him in the pursuit of individual glory:

I think anything is possible [with regards to the race for the Golden Boot].

We will play with him the last six games and then he will have six chances to score.

If he gets the chance you can see how fantastic his finishing is at the moment. He seems fitter than ever.

He was very hard working in the shutdown and that gives him now fantastic physical options.

While the next three games for Southampton are tricky (both Manchester clubs and Everton) and may slow investment, Saints’ run-in of Brighton, Bournemouth and Sheffield United will likely boost Ings’ ownership figures further should he be still within a shout of the Golden Boot, as seems likely.

Watford XI (4-2-3-1): Foster; Femenia (Pussetto 79′), Dawson, Cathcart, Masina (Holebas 73′); Hughes (Welbeck 73′), Capoue; Sarr, Doucoure, Pereyra (Pedro 73′); Deeney.

Southampton XI (4-4-2):  McCarthy; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Vestergaard, Bertrand; Smallbone (Armstrong 65′), Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Redmond; Long (Adams 75′), Ings.

Although it hasn't been confirmed as far as I know, the cancelled PL games should just be shifted to the midweek afterwards and therefore should remain in the same GW.

Worth squeezing Ings in here for DCL? Got 0.3itb and 2FTs. Would need to downgrade Son, Bruno, Jimmy or Doherty.

Are you sold on getting Ings? Not saying he won't keep it up but he has surely overperformed in the last 3 when you look at stats. Also the next 3 fixtures aren't the best for attacking returns.

To be honest, I'd not make any change in there but as you have 2 fts, I'd do Bruno to Martial as Martial just looks too good from open play racking up all the big chances and then assess later.

Klopp says he will rotate now so Salah could be expensive if he’s benched in 2/6 games which could well happen. Could be a Chance to rotate big hitters with not much value changes or tied up?

I think I want Martial & Pulisic (if fit) in for Mane & Saka, then use the change to upgrade the defence. But Mane plays AVL this week, so I'll delay that 1 week.

Therefore, I need to use a transfer this week in the meantime. So...

I would personally go DCL now and get Ings alongside as well from gw36.

Ings has had an xG of 0.91 in the last 3 games post lockdown and has scored 3 goals. I'm not very sure he keeps this over performance up with their next 3 fixtures being City Everton and United.

Just my thoughts though, the next thing you know Ings bags a brace against City 😀

Anyone looking at a Man City attacking Treble up from GW34 onwards?

    Surely even with Pep that would help get at least 2 out of 3 starters and 1 sub for the fixture list - which looks like its going to see them score quite a few;

NEW, bha, BOU, wat, NOR - even when adding in FA Cup & rest intervals it still looks pretty good:

    Wed 8th NEW
    3 days
    Sat 11th bha
    4 days
    Wed 15th BOU
    3 days
    Sat 18th FA CUP
    4 days (probably)
    Wed 22nd wat
    4 days
    Sunday 26th NOR

    Something like KDB, Mahrez, Jesus

But Foden & even Sterling (lol) could also have merits - for anyone trying to make a late burst from deep for the top 10k, cash mini leagues etc could have very high upside to offset the higher risk

I think Foden will get a good run of starts.
KDB+Mahrez looks the best duo to own in terms of gametime over the fixture congestion.

I currently have 0 city players but will get Mahrez in for Sarr this week. Don't think any city players are worth a hit because they're not guaranteed starts

I have 0 Man City players too. Initial plan was to bring back KDB back for after the Liv game, I guess that’s still the best option?
Sterling and Mahrez might be good too.

I think Its a good cover. I could stretch for KdB by selling Son, tho as u said in the comment bellow don’t know if its worth it. Mahrez is easier to get in, maybe for Bruno who, if doesn’t perform well again might go.

Another question is is it worth dropping the likes of Salah Mane Rashford Martial Bruno Son Jimenez Ings to get the City assets?

All play for teams either with some motivation in the league or having Golden Boot motivation for themselves in terms of Mane Ings and Salah

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

Definitely risky. The way I'd group them, rightly or wrongly:

Salah, Mane - not yet (maybe GW36 ejector seat for Salah - he has not been good away from home & with two away out of last 3 it might b ok to ditch after Burnely)

Rashford, Martial - almost certainly worth holding till the bitter end - looking like the new Yorke & Cole & they're very reasonably priced for what you get (i.e. guaranteed starts & plenty of chances)

Bruno, Son, Jiminez - *possibly* ok (or even prudent?) to get rid??

Bruno - looking at turning him into Rashford this week via 2 FT for example...

Son - pushed a little wider & deeper with Kane back, although he is just a terrific player & if had stayed onside vs. West Ham would be a mega-wagon - always a dangerous sell... but for non-owners maybe safe to swerve?

Jimmy - Mr consistency - but does he really have the upside that could destroy you (famous last words lol) from those remaining fictures from GW34+? (shu, EVE, bur, CRY, che)

With games being played behind closed doors, surely the home away factor doesn't apply much with Salah? Especially with him wanting to win the golden boot again.

Agree with the Bruno part. I think Martial and Rashford are currently United's best 2 attacking assets and I would ditch Bruno to get Mahrez in.

Son yes, pushed wide, but would start every game and that is something we would need now with 2-3 days of rest between games. Plus although he looked a bit wide in the first 2 games, he could've easily had a monster haul in both the games.

With Jim it really depends on how you're playing - Safe or chasing.

Thus I think triple city attack as much as is a good punt but comes with a caution. kDB and Mahrez the standouts. Mahrez Jesus if you're chasing.

Yeah I’ve seen the “but home and away don’t matter under Covid” hypothesis a number of times

It depends on whether you think the away dearth was due to klopp’s tactics, or due to the crowd

Personally I reckon it’s the former rather than the latter, and not sure that Klopp will change his “away tactics” all that much, even in the absence of an away crowd

No guarantees though, maybe Salah hattricks away on thurs night!

With Silva finishing up and games coming thick and fast, do you reckon pep will use the opportunity to blood Foden more you reckon? If he could average 60 minutes he would be worth a gamble especially with city's fixtures you reckon?

Think there's definitely a case to be made there for sure

I think he is a good option due to price but wouldn't expect him to play more than most other popular options. David Silva has been one of the most important players in the club's history and he will probably get decent game time in his last several PL games. And KDB should start most games anyway.

The mid-price forward options continues to give FPL Managers lots of choice. Danny Ings has scored in two of Southamptons opening three games, Jimenez likewise has return in 2 out of 3, with Rashford looking primed to hit a hot streak over United’s nice run of fixtures. Alongside these three Giroud, Maupay (even with the missed penalty) Nketiah and Joelinton have all looked promising in the cheap striker positions. Whilst the budget and mid price options look promising we are yet to see enough from the likes of Aubameyang and the premium strikers to seemingly warrant the price tag. How are you setting up your forward three from now until the end of the season?

I'm currently on Jim DCL and Jota.

Planning to either downgrade Jota to Nketiah and play 352 or take a punt on Jesus in a 343.

Would ideally go Rash but already have Bruno Awb and Martial. Don't think it's worth a transfer getting them out.

Also planning Inga in gw36. Tasty final 3 fixtures with motivation for the golden boot.

Taken the view that everyone will be rotated so going for players with fixtures and haul potential. Leicester look a bit out of sorts so avoided Vardy. Abraham has 5 double digit returns this season and that is with time out through injury. He has the potential to score big.

I am on my Wildcard and contemplating if I want to go 4-4-2 or 3-4-3.

If I go 4-4-2, then it will most likely be Rashford/Jesus + Jimenez in the front two with Nketiah as a good bench option.

If I go 3-4-3, then it will be Rashford/Jesus + Jimenez + Tammy/Ings. I think Tammy is still first choice and Giroud has just been filling in to ease back Tammy from pre covid injuries. GW 32 team sheet for Chelsea might tell us more.

I have Rashford, Jimi & DCL in these spots and will most likely carry them until the end of the season as fixtures pretty good for all 3. Nketiah and Jesus on the watchlist, but the former would mean a switch to 352.

The good thing about Aguero being out is there isn't really any forward I'm terrified of not owning at the moment.

Good option if chasing/ looking to climb rankings.

That looks like a really nice front 8. Kane is rarely a differential pick, but I must say after the West Ham game he did make a good case for himself. Watching him closely in the Sheffield United game to see if he is worth the extra over the Spurs midfielders

        Joelinton. Haha, nice one!

I've got Jimenez, DCL and Jesus - but regretting the latter pick a little. Mid-price forwards always seem to be great options, and even more so now there's a good number of teams with out and out class centre forwards rather than sharing the goals all across a more fluid forward line

playing 3-5-2 with Rashford and Jimmy up top, the money saved by having only 2 mid priced strikers allows for a quality midfield and defence.

Currently playing 3-5-2 and on a front 3 of Nketia (benched most weeks), Jiminez and DCL. The obvious upgrade here is Rashford, given the fixtures for Man Utd and the fact Rashford will start to be backed with the armband from now on. Happy to sacrifice Richarlison to enable this, and was first considering Rich to a cheap mid like Saka or Foden to enable DCL to Rashford. However, playing Foden or Saka every week feels risky when I could instead switch richa to Pulisic or similar, and move Jiminez to Rashford. Wolves really aren't impressing me attacking wise, so I'm wondering if Jiminez is worth the money, especially as his plumb fixtures are now complete and he won't be heavily captained again.

I guess it comes down to if I think DCL can match Jininez for 1.5m less money, and how much of an upgrade is Pulisic is over a Foden, for example.

        I've gone Jimi, Kane, Nketiah.

Jimi so consistent. I've had him most of the season and he's been great for me. Returns more often than he blanks.

Kane is a risk but he has the FPL pedigree to potentially be a great differential. Fixtures look good and he had decent stats last game.

Nketiah is a no-brainer 1st sub in the 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 I'll play most weeks.

Then I could downgrade DCL and bring in a fodder to upgrade defence.

But can't do anything unless I rid of Mane this week

          Meh.

You're probably right... just seems boring. Especially before CPL at home for Leicester.

Similar team to mine, especially the Midfield.

It's about which teams have the most to play for and hence keep fielding their strongest sides. I've had Mane from Day 1 but am considering selling to get Mahrez, Sterling, Martial, Pulisic, Laporte, Maguire etc.

Depends if you think Pep will still keep going for it in the League. I would want to extend exposure to Man U, Chelsea though.

Shame that Wolves have become the new '1-0 to the Arsenal' club.

        Son’s card should be marked.

Not getting in the box enough at all. He’s the one you could sacrifice.

      B. Greenwood
      C. Origi

WC last week and left £3.0 ITB for flexibility. Plan is to BB 33.

So, early thoughts, which do you prefer?

      A.) Son to Salah
      B.) Traore to Mahrez
      C.) Connolly to ?

      Pope
      TAA Doherty Aurier
      Son KDB Martial Fernandes Traore
      Rashford Jimenez
      Martinez Lascelles Soy Connolly

Son to Salah is the high ceiling move so I’d go for that.

Not liking Son ATM, this will probably be his last week in my side.

Yeah this is probably the safest move. Just rotation worries but I guess that applies to many at the moment! Cheers

I have an almost identical team, but need to do DCL > Connolly to enable Son > Salah, which will mean a hit.

I'm going to see what happens with TOT and MCI-LIV games this week then decide.

Would you downgrade DCL to Nketiah and upgrade Simpsons to Azpi/Alonso and play 4-4-2?

      So, DCL or Alonso/Azpi?

I'd still rather have DCL honestly
