Who made our 2019/20 FPL Team of the Season?

Over the last week, Fantasy Football Scout site users have been voting on their favourite Fantasy Premier League goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards of 2019/20.

Our polls have now closed and we can reveal which players have made our end-of-season XI.

Goalkeeper

There were no surprises between the posts, with Nick Pope polling over three-quarters of the goalkeeper vote.

Starting the season out at a bargain £4.5m, Pope registered 15 clean sheets for Burnley and finished as the highest-scoring goalkeeper in FPL.

His total of 120 saves was the fourth-highest in the division while nobody in the same Fantasy position came close to matching his 23 bonus points.

More than one in five of you backed Dean Henderson in our poll but the other four candidates were a long way adrift.

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold ended 2019/20 as the highest-scoring FPL defender, finishing just three points short of the record that Andrew Robertson set in that Fantasy position a year earlier.

The Liverpool right-back got close to his teammate’s 2018/19 total despite registering seven fewer shut-outs.

Four goals and an astonishing 15 assists saw him finish joint-fourth in the overall standings, with no other defender, goalkeeper or forward surpassing his 210 points.

Alexander-Arnold finished top of our poll with 31.6% of the vote, one position above John Lundstram.

A £4.0m FPL defender who operated as a box-to-box midfielder, Lundstram provided better value than any other outfielder based on the points-per-million metric.

Five goals, four assists, 10 clean sheets, 15 bonus and 144 points was a superb haul for someone so cheap, with five of his appearances resulting in double-digit hauls.

Although he lost his place and became less of a regular in the second half of the campaign, Lundstram finished the season in fitting fashion with a goal on the final day.

Matt Doherty was himself a bargain buy in 2018/19 and, despite the inevitable price rise, he made our Team of the Season for the second year running.

With four goals, eight assists, 12 clean sheets and 167 points overall, the Irishman was the only non-Liverpool player amongst the top four highest-scoring defenders.

Robertson and Virgil van Dijk trailed behind Doherty in our poll, with Leicester pairing Caglar Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira further back.

MIDFIELDERS

 1

Kevin De Bruyne always looked to be a shoo-in to make our end-of-season XI, having finished as the highest-scoring FPL asset in any position in 2019/20.

The Belgian, who started the season off at a now-unthinkable £9.5m, racked up 251 points and finished some distance ahead of the chasing pack thanks to his final-day haul.

The City midfielder started 32 of the 36 fixtures he was available for and there were 10 double-digit hauls over the course of the campaign, with his returns in Gameweeks 17 and 38+ representing high points.

Only two midfielders – both of whom were at the budget end of the scale – represented better value for money than De Bruyne (23.7) based on points per million, despite his end price of £10.6m.

What should FPL managers do with their free transfers?

Only Bruno Fernandes (8.4) averaged more points per match than De Bruyne (7.2) in 2019/20.

The inclusion of any January transfer window signing in an end-of-year XI is a contentious one but few mid-season captures have quite made the impact that the Portugal international has and he finished second in our midfielder poll.

Fernandes scored more points (117) from his Gameweek 25 debut onwards than the likes of Diogo Jota, Ismaila Sarr and Nicolas Pepe did all season, with only three blanks arriving in his 14 starts.

Six double-digit hauls were registered in that time, too, a total that no other Manchester United asset could beat across the whole of 2019/20.

Making our Team of the Season for the third straight year, Mohamed Salah‘s total of 233 points was the second-highest in FPL, despite it being his lowest since moving to Merseyside in 2017.

Nine double-digit hauls arrived in 2019/20, with one of them coming in Double Gameweek 24.

Salah enjoyed home comforts more than most and he was a reliable pick for the captaincy when at Anfield, with 15 of his 19 goals arriving on Merseyside. In only four of his 18 home appearances did he blank.

Gameweek 32+ Scout Picks focus on Arsenal, Wolves and Man United

Our second Manchester United ‘midfielder’ to make our Team of the Season will likely be a forward next season.

This was by some distance Anthony Martial’s best-ever FPL season, with the 24-year-old striker racking up 17 goals, nine assists and 200 points and finishing a clear fifth among FPL midfielders in the overall points table.

Martial’s average of 6.2 points per match was also the joint-fifth-best in the division.

Having previously had something of a reputation as being injury-prone, he also became a reliable starter after an early-season spell on the sidelines, missing only one of United’s final 29 league matches.

FORWARDS

Danny Ings more than doubled his Premier League goals tally in one fell swoop in 2019/20, finding the back of the net on 22 occasions in a superb campaign for the Southampton striker.

Ings, who finished top of our forward poll, finished the season in around 2.4 million squads and had risen in price by £1.6m – by some distance the biggest beginning-to-end price change in the game.

No other forward or indeed midfielder provided better value based on FPL’s points-per-million metric (26.7).

There were only three double-digit hauls over the course of the season but his consistency of returns more than made up for it, along with his league-best bonus points tally of 40.

The Golden Boot winner and the highest-scoring Fantasy forward of 2019/20, Jamie Vardy plundered 30 attacking returns and 34 bonus points in the season just gone.

The Leicester City forward – whose starting price was a relative bargain £9.0m – was within one point of matching his highest-ever FPL score, too, which was set in the Foxes’ title-winning year of 2015/16.

Most of the damage was done in the first half of the season: from Gameweeks 3 to 18, Vardy found the back of the net on 17 occasions and set up a further five goals.

The long-serving striker averaged 8.6 points per match over this run of games, delivering six double-digit hauls and blanking on just three occasions.

A whopping 23 of his 30 attacking returns came against bottom-half clubs, which made him a relatively safe bet for the captaincy in plum fixtures.

What's the best strategy for choosing forwards in FPL? 8

While he was never going to offer the same value he provided in his debut Premier League campaign, Raul Jimenez did score four more goals and 13 more FPL points this time around.

The Mexican, a bit like Ings, wasn’t too explosive, registering just three double-digit hauls – two of them against Manchester City – over the entirety of 2019/20.

But the points arrived on a regular basis, with his 24 attacking returns coming in 21 different games.

The Mexican started 37 of Wolves’ 38 Premier League fixtures, only being benched in Gameweek 20 when Nuno Espirito Santo’s side faced two matches in the space of 48 hours.

Jimenez made our Team of the Season for the second year running, edging out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to take the third forward spot.

Who's got some original FPL names? Tired of the usual Klipp Klopps, Tikka Mo Salah etc looking for something new next season

Has anyone ever tried a rotation pairing of a defender and a forward?
Ideally finding a fixture pairing where the defender plays against the low scoring teams (Shef Utd, Burnley, Newcastle, Palace, Brighton, Watford, Norwich) and the forward plays against the high conceding teams (Norwich, Watford, Bournemouth, Villa, West Ham, Newcastle, Southampton).
This is opposed to the standard rotation pairings which is usually just home and away fixtures.

Could be very fruitful if you find a playing forward for £5.0 or below like Ayew and Greenwood this year, then base you budget defender choice off fixtures.

No but for the most part you are targeting the same teams. Not enough teams that are only bad at one aspect to make a strategy out of it.

I actually did try that for a bit this season (maybe GW6 ish) with Ayew and two defenders (Lundstram and Kelly I think) didn't go that well because Ayew stopped scoring for ages

Ings and Jimi I want, have to see about Mitro depending on cost. Wasn’t planning on playing three up front but all depends the prices I guess.
I might possibly bench boost GW1, if so Mitro will surely be in it

In the few games I've seen Fulham this year he's been lucky not to see red for incidents which VAR will pick up. Pretty sure he received a retrospective ban for an elbow on White against Leeds which the ref missed, and last night would likely have been carded for throwing Emiliano(?) to the ground before the first Fulham goal.

Watkins makes more sense at Villa, they don't have a striker and Watkins plays as an out and out solo striker.

Palace are after Eze too, but I think West Ham will get him as they can throw Hugill into the deal, who is a player we want.

Just brainstorming/looking at a more traditional "orthodox" setup i.e. TAA plus two big hitters for captaincy from the pool of elite midfielders (Salah, Mane, Sterling, KDB, Bruno, Auba, possibly Sancho)

Accompanying those guys with say three forwards & a cheap defender (e.g. Vardy, Jimmy, Ings who were the FPL gold standard for both points and value) you'd be looking at something the range of below on value:

    - Vardy (200), Jimmy (185), Ings (185) + 4.5 Def (140) = 710 pts / 31.5 = 22.5 PPM

Versus say a less orthodox "one cheap forward & three expensive defenders" setup - comes out something like below:

    Mitro (140), Laporte (175), VVD (185), Doherty (165) = 665 pts / 26.0 = 25.5 PPM

All obviously based on subjective estimates on points, and about a bazillion other (potentially non-valid) assumptions in terms of fitness & form etc - but the second option looks to be nice in terms of allowing an extra ~5.0 - 6.0 of budget to go around for the remaining three outfield positions to try to make up the ~45-50 point gap that would probably exist between the two on absolute points (i.e. same GK, TAA & two elite Captaincy options in both scenarios)

Those remaining three outfield positions could then be the slots where you can focus on FT usage week on week to chase form, fixtures and/or bargains as they emerge & withdraw - either mids in a 4-4-2, strikers in a 4-3-3 or anything in between - all done around the more stable/less FT-intensive core of the players above

It just involves a pretty budget-intensive defensive setup - to be fair its basically just the old "defenders offer value/attackers offer points" chestnut dressed up a bit - but there does look to be a serious amount of elite defenders this year

    1. Greek Freak
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 7 months ago

The second setup looks good but that's kind of looking at the season in its entirety. As with all things FPL, it's all about timing. Having four premium defenders will likely get you 4x170-180ish points on average over the whole season, but you have to keep them for the season. What if Liverpool go on a run of 3 clean sheets in 15 games (or whatever it was)? More points to be found by being proactive. (also fewer points to be found too of course if you're the wrong kind of proactive!)

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        3 years, 7 months ago

Yep 100% - its always flawed to plan for a dead team scenario - but this would assume you would still make your full quota of FT's (and possibly more) - they would just be concentrated on a more limited number of slots, and on attacking slots at that rather than defensive...

Its unbelievably subjective & theoretical though & can be challenged in so many ways for sure

When is the game opening so we can start tinkering 🙂

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 8 Years
          3 years, 7 months ago

I've been thinking similarly for a while now, concentrating transfers on a limited number of players seems to be a great idea but it seems like the advantage you get by doing that is extremely hard to quantify/prove.

If you just have Pope, TAA, VVD and Doherty all season and don't touch your defence, it may seem suboptimal on the surface, but being able to dip in and out of attackers (without hits) more often could be more lucrative - many attackers seem to go on short bursts of form (this could be nonsense but with players like Pulisic/Sterling it doesn't feel like it) and just leaving your defence alone (aside from when WCing) could have almost hidden advantages that are difficult to prove.

          1. Greek Freak
            • 8 Years

Another flaw of the system is that it assumes you'll be able to guess right on which players will get the most points for the season. Obviously in many cases we can have a good idea, but this brings a lot of hindsight into the equation. To go back to the Liverpool example - is the run of games with no clean sheets a trend of just a blip? Will Pope recover soon from his mid-season slump? (they were getting soundly beaten by the likes of Villa and Palace and he wasn't even getting save points to compensate)

            1. SADIO SANÉ
              • 8 Years
              3 years, 7 months ago

you get a starting team and 2 wildcards - so you don't have to have the same 3/4 all season. Doherty was much worse without Boly, Liverpool worse without Alisson (some say with Fabinho), the Burnley keeper almost always gets 150 ish, Lundy was a fairly obvious pick after a few weeks at the price/oop'ness. Hindsight of course, but not without clues.

Of course some players like Digne people thought were amazing and just weren't - but even that became fairly clear once they started letting in 2 goals every game

              1. Greek Freak
                • 8 Years
                3 years, 7 months ago

That's exactly my point - no point planning for a spine of the team for the whole season because things change. Boly out, so Doherty not such a good option - sell. Alisson out, so double-up not a good option - sell one of them etc.

So I don't see why the need to plan for season keepers like that.

a plan can be foiled by many things, doesn't mean having a plan is pointless - and like I said we have a wildcard if a key player gets injured

Yeah i thought Liverpool's cleansheet run (or lack of them) looked pretty freakish in so far as they had equivalent or better underlying defensive stats (including goals conceded bizarrely) than any other team in the league at that time, but just weren't translating those underlying stats into clean sheets - Allison's abscence for 8 games or so was a definite contributor

Something similar (although not just as stark) can be seen with Chesea & Kepa at the minute, and also existed with Wolves when Boly was out for a while where they werent conceding lots of goals (GW3 & 4 excepted), but still weren't keeping lots of cleansheets

But it was nice to see that the Liverpool outlier snapped back into line after GW15 where they kept 10 cleansheets in the following 11 GWs without massive change in the underlying stats

With a full boat of personnel available, I'd probably back Liverpool to land somewhere in the middle of the pre/post-GW15 output & generate CS's at a clip of about one every two games

Glad Fulham got promoted. 3 or 4 of their players will be FPL prospects. I can't think of any of Brentford's.

        Cairney, Ream, Bryan, possibly Odoi

As a Yank, as much as Id like to say great things about Tim Ream, I cant. I dont think he will be a FPL prospect

I don't think I would call any Fulham defenders 'prospects'. As for Cairney, he was also talked up before 18/19 and never became a good FPL option - what will be different this time?

It was just a one-off game under a lot of pressure. Over the season the likes of Benrahma and Watkins have played really well.

I've only watched that game and the Barnsley game 😀 but completely folding when under pressure isn't a great trait in a player/s

I agree, but for the vast majority of the season they don't play under this kind of pressure so it's not an issue.

All hints on price and position changes in direct quotes as follows from FPL so far. Might not mean much but only info available at this point.

"Grealish's displays are bound to result in a price rise for 2020/21 FPL."

    ---

TAA: "Having started this season at £7.0m, though, a slight rise in cost for the right-back for 2020/21 would not be a surprise."

"Sadia Mane may also be set for a price hike after finishing as the third highest-scoring player in the game. The Senegalese was £1.0m cheaper than Mohamed Salah at the beginning of this season, starting at £11.5m, but they could be identically priced for the upcoming campaign."

    ---

"Having started this season at just £9.5m, De Bruyne now looks set for a significant price hike in the upcoming campaign."

    ---

"But Aubameyang's role on the left wing for the Gunners could potentially result in a change of position from a forward to a midfielder in FPL next term."

    ---

"However, Martial and Rashford could now merit a change of position in FPL next season."

"Fernandes is Man Utd's main set-piece taker and also appears to share penalty duties with Rashford. Those two, along with Martial, look set for price hikes in 2020/21."

"Forward Mason Greenwood will also face a rise in cost after beginning at a mere £4.5m in his breakout campaign. The teenager could also be reclassified as a midfielder in FPL, having started the final eight Gameweeks as a right winger."

    ---

"Lundstram, meanwhile, is set to be reclassified as a midfielder and will certainly be more expensive than his opening cost of £4.0m in 2019/20."

"George Baldock, John Egan, Enda Stevens and Chris Basham were also among the top eight defenders for value. A move out of the budget bracket seems very likely for all of Chris Wilder’s regulars in defence, reducing their prospects of offering similar value next season."

    ---

"Ings is now expected to earn a price hike to around £8.0m next season."

    ---

"A total of only eight clean sheets indicates members of the Spurs backline will remain under the £6.0m mark in FPL next season."

    ---

"Antonio’s impact as a striker looks likely to result in a change of position from midfielder to forward in the upcoming campaign."

    ---

"Although price hikes could be on the cards for both Doherty and Jimenez again next season, their output suggests they can still reward investment. Adama Traore also merits a price rise from his opening value of £5.0m this term."

Great stuff - my interpretation below!

      Grealish 7.5
      TAA 7.5
Mane 12.0 (and Salah 12.0 by inference?)
      KDB 12.0
      Auba 11.5 (Mid)
      Martial 9.5 (Fwd)
      Rashford 9.5 (Mid)
      Bruno 10.5
      Greenwood 6.5 (Mid) *Bargain alert*
      Lundstram 5.5 (Mid)
      SHU defs - all +0.5
      Ings 8.0
Spurs defs - all sub 6.0
      Antonio - 7.5 (Fwd)
Doherty - 6.5 (reckon they wont hike him - 7.0 is too much?)
      Jimmy - 8.5
      Adama - 6.5

6.5 is a hike for Doherty - he started last season at 6.0. I think of all the price guesses, 6.5 for Doherty seems the most nailed-on.

You don't score 251 points by being rotated every other game. He'll get his rest sometimes but he's the most nailed attacker in that team.

Season is going to be crambed though and with the 5 sub rule we could see reduced minutes, benchings etc for many.

              Yep

The 5 sub rule is intriguing. It's not a given that it'll play out the same way in full season as opposed to the most lockdown but it could affect minutes for premiums

In the most crambled & condensed part of the season though (i.e. post restart) he managed 73 points in 7 starts, 2 benchings and one no show from 10 games

City had an extra league game to fit in there over other teams as well as FA Cup to make their schedule even more bananas...

He's still comfortably getting 7.0 PPA there, albeit they had some lovely fixtures in that run

Auba as a mid is the biggest one there for me - not quite a death blow for premium forwards but it makes putting money up top harder to justify.

Yeah I don't see how you can really build any kind of team without at least two slots for the now 7x elite mids

(Salah, Mane, Sterling, KDB, Auba, Bruno, Maybe Sancho)

And that doesn't really leave a whole pile of budget for an elite striker

Spurs defenders might be good value. They've been such bad picks for so long - I remember two seasons ago there wasn't even a single starting defender under 6.0m, and it even included one rotation threat.

However, despite Mourinho's reputation they haven't actually been that good defensively - any clean sheets they had were mostly down to Lloris as opposed to beind sound in defence. I'm in two minds...

    Curious

Can someone name the attacking assets who have done well under RH? There must be one or two. Who did he have at Fulham? I’m guessing it was someone who fitted the Ayew template

One of the most disappointing aspects for me last season was Camarasa who we got in on a fantastic loan with option to buy agreement. I always thought he was a cracking player. He put up with Warnock for a season but ducked out very early - don’t think he even made the pitch, There have been signs too that all the hype over Meyer wasn’t entirely misplaced

I’m sure we’ll sign someone but am frankly unexcited by who it is - any potential more unlikely to be unlocked when the strait jacket is removed.

Give me reason to hope - please 🙂

        My thinking is exactly not

There was a very brief spell he had in tandem with Bats but I'd argue that RH has cooked him. Don't think it's any coincidence that Townsend has fallen off the radar too this last season when we became the ultimate RH side - almost a caricature

Playing off a combo of 3 from Mili Macarthur Macarthy and Kouyate isn't a recipe for exciting wing play. You get the ball in the wrong part of the pitch and have no one steaming forward with you. Likely to be only one wing at a time too.

Salisu to join Southampton on a 4 year deal.

He'll cost the Saints £10.9m but should be a good CB signing.
