The best strikers to buy, sell and hold based on FPL goal threat from open play

With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game.

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

The FPL Eye Test - Gameweek 3 3

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

CHECK OUT THE FULL PENALTY TAKERS LIST HERE

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

Is Ben Godfrey a centre half? Coleman not in any danger from him?

He is a CB, impacts Mina and Keane. Nothing to do with Coleman.

Mina most at threat I think, Keanes been a different player with some proper defensive mids infront of him, much more confident.

Max Aaron’s is the fullback that you’re probably thinking of from Norwich, very decent & linked with Bayern.

    1) ASM->Podence
    2) Son->Mahrez
    3) Save transfer.

Tricky - would Foden/Podence be a 3rd, 4th or 5th mid? If 5th I'd probably just get a 4.5 or Soucek, if 4th you're going to be worrying about minutes going forward so you'd probably pick the one with Bruno because of pens and make sure you have a solid bench.

          Yep it's my intent too.

          GW5 - Mahrez/Havertz > Son
          GW6 - Foden + James/Saiss > Stephens + Robertson -4

That's the tentative plan. Let's see what happens.

    How does this look:

    Martinez Steer
    TAA Semedo Lamptey Mitchell Justin
    KDB Salah Trossard Mahrez Barnes
    DCL Jimenez Brewster

Was all set on Ings but I really want Son over him long term so left enough cash in the bank to do Mahrez to Son. Mahrez looks great short term until Son is back.

I've looked at that as well but would mean Trossard to 4.5m and play 3 of Lamptey/Mitchell/Justin/Brewster every week which leaves it a bit unbalanced for me. Can always look at it after next 2 weeks

Just need to set up WC to save transfer then ahead of GW 6. Then its an easy move to downgrade one of the forwards to get Son. Something I'm considering as well. But like the look of Mahrez as he's so explosive and Leeds looks a good fixture for his

Yes I was but now you say that I am doubting myself a bit! You never know with Pep so can't second guess him. I did it last season and it cost me big time with Aguero….kept captaining him as he'd been benched the week before so thought he must play this week and he was benched again.

Only Greenwood is a potential issue but Brewster off the bench.

          From the Liverpool Echo, 09:52:
"Everton will give Richarlison every chance of proving his fitness for tomorrow’s game with Brighton after scans revealed no major damage to this ankle.
The Brazilian twisted his ankle in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup win over West Ham United at Goodison and was forced off just after the hour mark.
Richarlison underwent tests at Finch Farm yesterday and the 23-year-old has avoided a serious injury and so Carlo Ancelotti remains hopeful he will be fit to face Brighton at Goodison tomorrow (3pm).
Ancelotti is to provide an update on his progress at his pre-match press conference today (1:30pm) where is he also expected to confirm that Allan, who hurt his abductor muscle against West Ham, will miss tomorrow’s game."

Not crazy about Barnes and Sterling. I think Barnes is the Mitro of mids but without pens and 1m more. LEE has only conceded 7 chances from their right flank (where Sterling plays). To contrast, LEE has conceded 14 chances from their center and 15 chances from their left flank.

I regret selling Davies for Saiss already. Too boring. Wish I got Castagne instead. Now I have to choose between selling ASM for Foden or Son for someone for a -4. I hate this. I've taken hits every week so far.

Depends on their open play potential

True. For example Klich and especially Jorginho are not like Mitro or Antonio

Not all pen takers are equal, some are poor open play options, who play in poor teams who don't win many pens

Good to go for a a WC:

    McCarthy // Steer
    Robbo // Saiss // James // Lampety // Mitchell
    KDB // Sterling // Barnes // Zaha // Rodriguez
    DCL // Jimi // Brewster

Bit nervous without Salah but think Sterling will outscore him over next 2-3 GW.

Martinez over McCarthy if you can. As Brewster is a certain starter for Sheff Utd I'd consider downgrading one of non Man City defenders and try to use the money elsewhere i.e. Jimi to Vardy

Would you play Zaha (Chelsea away) or Foden (Man City Home) this weekend? Or alternatively drop Bamford to fit them both in? Ta

I'd easily play Zaha. Foden and Bamford is a 50/50 for me
