The best strikers to buy, sell and hold based on FPL goal threat from open play

With so many goals already this season, it’s all about strikers in Fantasy Premier League – but which ones should we sell, keep or buy?

We have already witnessed 103 goals over the first 28 matches of the campaign, an average of 3.68 per game. To put that into perspective, the previous Premier League record across the course of a full season was an average of 2.82 goals per game.

With nets bulging up and down the country, it is natural to assume that the bulk of the goals will be scored by strikers and, with the new handball regulations leading to more penalties being awarded, it is only natural to favour front-men on spot kick duties.

The FPL Eye Test - Gameweek 3 3

For example, the following forwards take penalties for their respective clubs:

  1. Neal Maupay (£6.5m) – Brighton
  2. Chris Wood (£6.5m) – Burnley
  3. Richarlison (£8.0m) – Everton
  4. Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.0m) – Fulham
  5. Jamie Vardy (£10.0m) – Leicester City
  6. Callum Wilson (£6.4m) – Newcastle
  7. Danny Ings (£8.4m) – Southampton
  8. Harry Kane (£10.5m) – Spurs
  9. Charlie Austin/Hal Robson-Kanu (£5.4m) – West Brom
  10. Michail Antonio (£6.4m) – West Ham
  11. Raul Jimenez (£8.6m) – Wolves

CHECK OUT THE FULL PENALTY TAKERS LIST HERE

That’s a pretty large share out of the 20 teams. So, while 3-5-2 has been gaining popularity over the last few years, the number of penalty takers available at budget prices in forward positions may very well help cement the classic 3-4-3 as the preferred formation.

But do we want to be investing in strikers who rely exclusively on penalties? While there could be merit in that approach, surely we want to investing those who offer plenty of threat from open play as well.

So, let’s have a look how the league’s strikers have done so far using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

    Which move?

    A) Mitro > Jimi
    B) Bissouma > Barnes (352 bench Mitro)

        Am I crazy for wanting to keep Mitro (3rd for all strikers shots in box and on pens)?

          Not crazy but they are low quality chances he is getting. He posted similar stats last time in 18/19 and plenty held for too long as a result. I would move on.

    Expect Greenwood to be a nice differential for GW4, with his young legs against a Spurs defense who played last Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday.
    Remember he scored a goal disallowed for a Rashford offside and got an assist disallowed too because of someone else offside in GW3.

    Bissouma to Pode worth -4 to play over Ayling? 2m itb

    Martinez
    TAA Digne Saiss Ayling
    Salah KDB Hamez Grealish
    Jime DCL

    Steer Bissouma Mitchell Brewster

      No guarantees Podence starts after a knock so wouldn't bring him for hit. Just play Ayling

        Yeah fair point, just Fulham look terrible and Pode is the type of player that could do really well in that game, plus good fixtures, the next 3 being great.

        Maybe, it's between Bissouma, Mitchel and Ayling for last spot if I don't take a -4. I can't see any of them getting more than 2 points.

          Can't see a CS for leeds against city, bissouma for a decent Brighton side more likely to get attacking points against Everton with a couple of injuries

    On a wildcard sadly, RMT.

    Martinez / Nyland
    TAA / Castagne / Justin / Lamptey / Mitchell
    Salah / KDB / JRod / Zaha / Foden
    Jimenez / DCL / Brewster

    Any thoughts?

    Not sure if Martinez is worth it over McCarthy considering upcoming fixtures. Also - not fully sold on Zaha/JRod. Would rather have Son really. With this, I can probably get him by either downgrading TAA or changing Zaha + JRod to Son + Podence/ASM.

        I agree. I'm kinda stuck with it because of price rises atm. I can remove Castagne but that means I can't get him back later. With 1G & 3A so far, I'm not sure if I should take him out just yet. Justin I don't see removing just because he's value at the price.

      Similar to mine but I went Barnes/Mahrez/Trossard over Jrod/Zaha/Foden. My thinking is Mahrez is placeholder for Son who I really want so left enough cash to do a straight swap.

      1. WHY ALWAYS MESUT?
        • 10 Years

        I had Mahrez earlier. But he's played 90 minutes for City's last 3 games and I'm worried he might be rotated.

        Same, I'd rather have a clear move into Son, I just didn't see an easy way to do it.

      Barnes or Grealish over Zaha. Zaha will become a trap again very soon

        I think so too tbh. But that said, he's currently playing completely out of position - that's the only temptation. Not sure if Barnes is worth it with 2 Leicester defenders already in my team.

    I have this dung heap.

    McCarthy
    Awb Vinagre TAA
    Salah KDB Soucek Podence
    Martial Werner DCL
    Steer-Dier-Bissouma-Ayling
    0.5 1ft

    Considering the IB wc after deadline.
    1. Use 1ft (defence)
    2. Use 1ft (striker - TM/wer out)
    3. Take - 8 and delay wc (prob awb+2 strikers for robbo+ings+Jim).
    4. Do nothing. Sort after IB.

          Sheff Utd fan - he will be a no brainer starter
          Mousset is injured and out for a while
          Sharp is 34 and hasn't got the pace for this level anymore 🙁
          Burke has actually impressed me, but doesn't look a natural goal-scorer (he is more a winger)
          I suspect it will be McBurnie/Brewster as our front 2

          It's not guaranteed. But they currently have a midfielder playing up front so it doesn't look like they trust their strikers too much. They are yet to score a goal. Mousset injured leaves McGoldrick, McBurnie and Sharp. I think he starts after International break vs Fulham.

      I'm going to do A. Barnes has been outstanding so far + very good fixtures (+ son value will probably drop again, can bring him back cheeper if want to)
      Keeping Werner for now. Pulisic and ziyech are "very close" according to lampard and i think they'll play CRY, i'll wait and see their impacts on werner returns this GW.

    Chris Wood will obliterate that Newcastle defence without Lascelles. Come on Charlie Taylor, whip those crosses in!

      Depends on the team structure, ofcourse. But there are better options than Werner among the forwards.

      looking at your team I'd ship for Jime for now, use Jime for the great fixture run then get Werner back in if he starts firing.

        Considering him or Vardy. Leaning more towards Vardy but Jimi had great fixtures

          IMO, both Jimi and Vardy have relatively poor underlying stats. Vardy has ridden the penalty wave till now, Jimi has fixtures which are stuff of dreams. Tough call, but I would still go Jimi as Leicester cover can be got through their mid and defence

    On a WC and concerned about lack of balance due to having KDB, Sterling and Auba. What do you think?

    McCarthy (peacock-farrell)

    Vinagre. W-P. Justin. Dunne. Mitchell

    KDB. Salah. Sterling. Auba. Mendy

    Mitrovic. DCL. Brewster

          Martinez Nyland
          TAA Castagne Masuaku Dunne Mitchell
          Mane KdB Barnes Zaha March
          Jimi DCL Adams
          0.9M ITB

          Have a few options:
          1. Adams --> Ings
          March --> Biss
          Castagne --> Lamptey

          In this option, would get the consistency of Ings over Adams and ofcourse, he is on pens. Weakening the other two positions though.

          2. Adams --> Brewster
          Zaha --> Mahrez (placeholder for Son next week)

          3. Castagne --> Robbo
          March --> Biss
