Son and Kane top the FPL points table as United’s defence crumbles again

Manchester United 1-6 Tottenham Hotspur

  • Goals: Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) | Tanguy Ndombele (£5.9m), Son Heung-min (£9.0m) x2, Harry Kane (£10.5m) x2, Serge Aurier (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Anthony Martial (£8.9m) | Kane, Aurier, Son, Ben Davies (£4.9m), Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m)
  • Bonus: Son x3, Kane x2, Aurier x1

A ruthless Spurs thrashed a Manchester United outfit that started fast, were then reduced to ten men and ended up a shambles.

Thirty seconds into the game and it looked like it might be the visitors who would be the whipping boys as Anthony Martial (£8.9m) burst into Tottenham’s area and Davinson Sanchez (£5.4m) gave away a penalty.

The spot-kick was, as usual, put away by United’s most popular Fantasy Premier League (FPL) asset, the 20.7%-owned Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m), and visiting coach Jose Mourinho could have been excused for preparing a scowl similar to the one he wore during much of his tenure at Manchester.

The fact he left the pitch at full-time with the sort of smugly magnanimous smile that only a massive victory can produce was down to his side’s excellence, a misguided moment from Martial and a complete capitulation from the rest of the United team.

But amidst all the sound and fury of a truly bewildering game, the key Fantasy takeaway was the surprise presence of, and a brilliant performance from, Son Heung-min (£9.0m).

While Mourinho had suggested the midfielder might be fit to play at Old Trafford, a hamstring issue had his official chances down as 25%. That prompted a massive FPL sale, with a net 1,308,054 managers – well over half his total ownership – getting rid of the South Korean.

He responded by starting, scoring twice, assisting once, earning maximum bonus and recording 18 points for his second double-digit haul (the other brought in 24) of a remarkable start to the season.

Twitter users were in meltdown at half-time, with the hashtag ‘Took Son’ – as in ‘I took Son out of my Fantasy team this week’ – trending worldwide.

By the final whistle, that had been replaced by #OleOut as Gunnar Solskjaer’s men fell apart.

The rot didn’t even start with Martial’s dismissal, after 28 minutes, for an irritable slap to Erik Lamela‘s (£5.9m) face sparked by the Argentine’s weasly attempt to elbow the United striker.

VAR upheld referee Anthony Taylor’s decision despite also showcasing Lamela’s embarrassing theatricality and his massive culpability in the whole event. But Martial walked, Lamela received only a booking and the match hurried away from the hosts.

In truth, it was already heading in that direction.

United’s lead lasted all of two minutes, with the fragility of centre-back pairing Harry Maguire (£5.4m) and Eric Bailly (£5.0m) – the latter preferred to Victor Lindelof (£4.9m) – exposed for the first of many times.

Maguire’s feeble attempt to head the ball clear created a panic in the area and the ball eventually fell for Tanguy Ndombele (£5.9m) to equalise.

Three minutes later, Son put Spurs ahead when the new-look assist machine Harry Kane (£10.6m) was fouled, picked himself up and played a quick ball through to the midfielder, who dinked the ball over the advancing David De Gea (£5.5m) and in.

United responded, the lively Mason Greenwood (£7.4m) chalking up three attempts by the 23rd minute, but Son had already blown a great chance to double his tally before the Martial dismissal and it was one-way traffic from then on.

A minute after Martial finally trudged off, Spurs made it 3-1 when Bailly made a mess of trying to play out from the back, Kane pounced and played the ball to Son, who weighed up his options before squaring back to the striker for a simple finish.

Losing a striker should have at least meant United retained some semblance of shape at the back, but instead, enormous pockets of space kept opening up on their right flank and when Serge Aurier (£5.2m) was given the freedom to exploit this, he responded by setting up Son’s second goal.

It could even have been five by half-time, Kane missing a good chance from a near-post header, and that scoreline would not have flattered the visitors.

Solskjaer made changes at the break, shoring up his midfield by swapping out the blameless Fernandes and the pedestrian Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) for Fred (£5.4m) and Scott McTominay (£4.9m), but the fact Spurs only scored twice in the second half was as much to do with their own more relaxed approach than anything the United coach, or his players, did.

It was 5-1 on 51 when the rampaging Aurier smashed home from a brilliant Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.9m) first-time pass and Kane finished the scoring with an unstoppable penalty after substitute Ben Davies (£4.9m) was taken down by a sliding Paul Pogba (£7.9m).

Solskjaer was suitably crestfallen at the end of the match, saying:

Today, it was almost like Christmas, too many mistakes all came at once. Too many mistakes against a good team and you’ll be punished. It’s very embarrassing.

What might make things worse for him is the crash in confidence of Maguire, the unreliability of Lindelof and the rustiness of Bailly. United seem close to bringing in a new striker (Edinson Cavani) and a left-back (Alex Telles), but the unaddressed weaknesses in the centre of their defence do not bode well at all, as 11 goals conceded in three matches makes abundantly clear.

In Fantasy terms, however, the plentiful owners of Fernandes can still look forward to a good schedule through to mid-December, while Martial’s three-match ban could mean out-of-position opportunities up front for midfielders Greenwood or, more likely, Marcus Rashford (£9.5m).

As for Spurs, Son is currently the most-bought Gameweek 5 player – it would be interesting to know how many of those purchasers sold him ahead of the United match – and Kane is also in the top five.

The pair have 89 points between them this season. United’s entire squad has 72, albeit from one game less, and owning Son and/or Kane looks highly advisable when their next four opponents are West Ham and Brighton at home and Burnley and West Brom away.

So reasons to be cheerful are many for Spurs fans and Fantasy owners alike, while Mourinho was similarly upbeat:

The squad is very good, that’s why we won these matches, rotating players, bringing in fresh legs… and then Lo Celso injured, Bergwijn injured, Bale working… look at the squad we have, look at the attacking players we have, plus Vinicius in the stand. It was an amazing performance. I’m very proud of everyone at the club.

That could all be construed as a bit of a dig at a United board he believed failed to back him in the transfer market.

One thing’s for sure – Mourinho’s successor at Old Trafford is the manager with all the worries at present.

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Bailly, Maguire, Shaw; Matic (McTominay 45), Pogba; Fernandes (Fred 45), Rashford, Greenwood (van de Beek 67); Martial.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-3-2-1): Lloris; Aurier, Dier, Sanchez, Reguilon; Hojbjerg, Sissoko, Ndombele (Alli 69); Lamela (Moura 45), Son (Davies 73); Kane.

    Arsenal:

    Leno
    Bellerin Gabriel Luiz Tierney
    Xhaka Ceballos Partey
    Willian Lacazette Aubameyang

    Runarsson
    Cedric Holding Mari Maitland-Niles
    Elneny Willock Saka
    Pepe Nketiah Martinelli

Need to get rid of a lot of players though: Sokratis, Chambers, Mustafi, Ozil, Kolasinac, and Torreira

Wont get in the top 6.

Very poor underling defence and attacking data. Have overperformed xg and xgc this year so far

Wont keep this up unless they massively improve.

After 4 weeks of data, things am i currently starting to question

    1) City premiums : are they still worth investment over other options - still expect huge returns, its just this year there are cheaper options matching them. There is also the poorish fixtures - no standout captain until week 10

    2) Spurs are actually creating alot with their underlying data being good, massive surprise. Part of doing well in FPL is admitting certain previous thoughts are wrong - i may need to go against instinct and back them on the double up

    3) Wolves could be done as a top 6-8 attacking team. Lots of player turnover and losing Doherty, Jota, Lwb has been far more deterimental than we expect- also many other options now at Jimi price

    4) If liverpool keep having this super high line - i will in weeks have to consider not keeping the double up. However i expect with Thiago back it will settle down. Ditto with Allison back.

    5) I backed Antonio since pre season to eventually be the Ings of this year. But wanted to wait until week 8. i may need to do like ings last year and ignore fixtures.

    6) Chelsea may actually be not worth investment all year - Cant currently see how Werner and Pulisic will work with Havertz, They all need a real no 9 which means one of them wont play. And then you have to add Ziyech and Mount into the equation.

    7) Arsenal - dont see anything worth fpl investment there for a long time, possibly the season

    8) United will still be worth investment. Rashford on the break in next 3 fixtures will offer value and points.

        Cheers

To be fair almost every season is like that with something bizarre becoming the season norm and we needing to adjust

Can still recall seasons where dead players from the previous year became essential the next term

        Berbatov at United around 2011
        Agbonlahour at Villa around 2010
        Kuyt when Daglish came in
        Milner under Martin O Neil
        Mane last year
        Kdb last year over Sterling

I don’t think this season has started the same at all personally. It’s not been about a player or 2 surprising us and delivering, it’s been the majority of sensible stats, form, fixture analysis being useless in the face of some crazy results week in week out.

Chelsea can still do well but not be a good fpl team

Rotation and Frank not knowing how to use them properly means paying 9mil for a player you cant predict as a captain is a valid idea

You won’t find a lot of people to disagree with many of the premises you out out, but I tend to think that many of those things are over estimations and based on limited data And I bet you this comment looks really funny in four weeks of hindsight

Interesting points but as an arsenal fan I’d have to disagree with 7. I think with a decent run of fixtures and with Partey close to signing our defence could be worth investment. Decent price and especially the wingbacks can be very attacking. Forward positions are tougher to call but Pepe could come in to his own in the next few months. Watch this space

Arsenals underlying data for both defence and attack is middle of the table stuff

Partey who is good wont fix this.

You guys will need 3-4 more in the door over the longterm. Arteta is maximising that squad and results are actually an over achievement currently based on the underlying data ( check out understat or other xG data sources which are always very close to reality over the longterm)

I get underlying data can be important for some things but the eye test is substantially more important. We’re so much more solid than we have been in years and that’s despite playing David luiz. We’re set up to be much more compact and the work rate is much much higher than it has been in years. Don’t believe everything you see in an algorithm.

            Its not an algorithm

Its not predictive, its looking at the actual real match chances and shot types and areas you create and give up

Arsenal have not improved in defence or attack under Arteta much at all. Results have slightly picked up though

The odd good performance (mostly in the cups) has given the whole time their a more positive spin - but i do think in the long term he will trend towards making Arsenal a better side

It will just take alot of time, 2 years at a minimum, maybe more

Try telling Jamie Vardy and aubameyang that. Players with low xG versus goals. Stats and data only take you so far. Take it from someone who goes to arsenal games a lot (well used to anyway) we have improved in many aspects that don’t always show up on paper. And it’s not just the odd good performance, our all round performance has massively improved over the last 9 months since arteta joined. It’s important to watch games as much as look at them in a spreadsheet.

They dont have low xG , both Auba and Vardy have excellent high xG. Check understat

Their goals numbers is about 10-20% above average xG, which is to be expected since both are above average finishers. So with this factored in they are again matching xG projections

These over-achieving results by Arsenal are just not longterm sustainable ( same occuring this year short term as last year in lockdown)

                https://understat.com/match/14099

                https://understat.com/match/14465

                https://understat.com/match/11953

                https://understat.com/match/12014

                https://understat.com/match/11993

Objective measures will always wins over subjective.

Its a science compared to eye tests.

Their defence is actually over the longterm (past year) producing better numbers than their attack (albeit this weekend and season has been very poor)

      Look at understat.com

Their attack massively overperformed in lockdown ( lots of shots from long distance that cannot be relied on) which has made people rate their attack more than their defence

Manchester United is not a football club, it is a profit-producing business.

You could argue it's naïve to think a football club is anything but a business, but I disagree. Football clubs hold a huge amount of meaning to millions of people and that matters imo. Football clubs should not exist to pay off debts or make profit, they're more than just a business. Every fan that spends money to support that club, should see that money spent on improving their club, not seeing rich men get richer. Over a billion has been bleed from the club in the same time that over a billion has been invested in City.

I may being irrational right now, and I reserve that right to be irrational. My club has been abused, the stadium and training facilities underinvested and outdated, the recruitment dictated by morons. I want the Glazers out.

I agree with you..but why are they investing in two 18yr olds that haven’t played a full senior club game between them (£20+m too supposedly). Yes youth is important (and they may turn out to be great players) but at the minute United need to sort there defence/squad out and quickly, or the future won’t matter!

True the problem probably comes from the midfield (pogba) not tracking back properly. Maybe should have went for Partey?

    On WC:

    A) Maupay, KDB, Semedo, Castagne
    B) Kane, Zaha, Robbo, max 4.7

    Martinez, Forster
    Chilwell, XXXX, XXXX, Lamptey, Mitchell
    Salah, XXXX, Son, Rodriguez, Grealish

Yes I agree. Maybe it’s just that I see Grealish (who showed already huge talent last season) being unlocked as a creative force and more likely to consistently deliver longer term than Maupay

    On my WC

    Martinez

    Chilwell/Lewis*/kwp

    Son/kdb/Salah/Jrod

    DCL/Kane/Watkins

    (Bissouma/4.0/4.0)

How can I improve defence without losing/downgrading anyone?

    Or should I reconsider Kdb?

Meslier is still the best cheap keeper for longterm.

      Watkins to Antonio for sure
Maybe KDB down to Pulisic / Rashford, Lewis to Robertson

Its about getting future points not what happened this week gone

He has very good underlying data - i expect him to get close to or outscore Auba over the year

He scored last week , and should have had another 10points on top if he simple waited with his runs

The red card meant we didnt see much attacking from United

          They will still offer value

You can have both double spurs and a Rashford in midfield along side Salah, Hamez and DCL and Salah

              How does this countradict?

Rashford can still be a good option, he didnt have much of the ball yesterday as United were down to 10 men

Agree with alot of your normal takes , but just to play devils advocate on this

Hard to tell yet and see the reasons for holding with the longterm underlying data over past years (have sterling myself since week 2)

          But...

City are in a 4th year of peps cycle, underlying data so far this is way down for attacking trends. Hard to know if its city on a drop off or the above average defences they have faced

Part of me is starting to come around to the idea they are dropping off abit with the core aging - body language in second half at weekend looked like a team tired of the mental side of it

And post lockdown data since beating Liverpool in a deadgame has also been poor in games where the opposition wasnt on holiday ( Norwich , Brighton, etc )

Taking their past 10 games as a whole, and discounting teams who were on the beach , they are not putting up the same numbers.

Fair points, but I still see City as the best attacking team in the division, and once Laporte and Aguero, and to a lesser extent Jesus, Gundogan, Cancelo etc are fully up to speed we’ll see them step up again. Personally I‘d have no hesitation captaining De Bruyne, or Sterling if I owned him, next week.

Agree here also, its my current position too with Sterling in my team

But still willing to entertain the idea to find a way to hedge a winning position compared to the majority

Cant shake the feeling its like RVP the season after Ferguson left,

prior season was amazing and attacking numbers also, he then started the first few games under moyes with some nice hauls - but the longterm trend from the end of the previous season was pointing towards decline , which the full season of Moyes bore out.

Hard to tell yet, Have heard some reports from Journo's that the dressing room pre -season was already starting to tire of the cycle

The vast majority on here think he's been dropped, and it was always inevitable he'd be dropped for Azipilcueta and that all buyers are morons.

But as someone who is partway through his 2nd coaching badge, and has read countless books on tactics and attended many lectures, including one in person on tactical periodisation by Jose, I'm convinced Reece James is crucial to the way Chelsea want to play moving forward. And when Ziyech returns Reece James will become one of the best value players in the game.

The reason why Reece James was dropped is because the experiment with finding a Ziyech replacement on the RW was a failure, so the best alternative was CHO, someone who would stay naturally wide. The problem is that CHO occupies the same space as James, so Azpi was needed for balance sake. How you even begin to convince people of the convoluted intricacies of football tactics is beyond me, especially when they saw in a 2 minute highlight video of an awful defensive mistake from James, and assume he's awful, so they assume he was clearly dropped.

But I'll at least say my piece, then I'll go on to sipping my ice cream ale and watching an Attenborough documentary. I expect to receive some snarky 3-word comment from a 12-year-old that receives a ton of likes, but I'm learning not to care. All I can do is say my piece and move on.

It’s not wrong, it’s just not what frank is doing imho

Chillwell is going to be advanced on the left and azpi is going to sit back a la “unbalanced fullbacks”. Reece will definitely give him rests in easier games, but he has been a defense of liability for us a lot in the past 12 months and azpi is our best defender. I doubt you’re going to see many games where we go three center backs this year. I wouldn’t be terribly surprised to see Reese get some time in the midfield as a late substitute. He’s still 20; I like your tank I just think it’s a season too early

Risky defence to have a 5 star mid.

Took a -4 for this, any other changes needed? Actually quite nervous about not having salah, but you can't always have the best of both world

    McCarthy (Ryan)
    KWP,* TAA, Saiss (Lamptey, Mitchell)
    KDB, Son, JRod, Grealish" (Anguissa)
    DCL, Ings, Jim

    * Reece, Fodden --> KWP, Grealish

Grealish or Hamez on WC? Not sure whether to bring in Hamez to ride price rises as I may not have him in my final team

Thank you Zimo. Still a long way to go considering I took a hit of -72 pts across the gws. Well, we will be back with a bang after the IB.

I will take no more hits henceforth or rather just 1 😆

When Bale comes into the team, do you think it will benefit Son or Kane more?

Rather Barnes over Zaha otherwise very good. With transfer window closing will Zaha put same effort in?

I think Zaha is worth the punt with their fixtures..
