Scout Network

The latest news and updates from the Scout Network

This week has been another busy one for the Scout Network and this regular round-up recaps what its members have been producing.

We are thrilled to announce that FPL Gameweek has joined the Scout Network this week. FPL Gameweek has been one of the most exciting additions to the FPL community, alongside fellow Scout Network member Live FPL, as it gives managers access to live in-play data updates.

FPL Gameweek allows Fantasy managers to track their points, their rivals’ points and managers’ live ranks during each Gameweek.

Using your FPL team ID or your team name to show your points, substitutions and rank in real-time, it negates the need to wait for an official game update.

FPL Gameweek is a great tool for assessing the impact of the decisions you have made and it enables you to see the weaknesses in your FPL team that you may need to rectify ahead of the next Gameweek deadline.

The FFS International branch of the Scout Network has also had a busy seven days.

This week saw the launch of commenting on the Arabic language part of the website and we are working on launching the Arabic language community articles to allow further growth of that initiative.

We have also now set up the FFS International page on our site.

You can read more about FPL Greece in the FFS International article.

The Scout Academy also had a busy month in September and you can read all about what they have been doing here.

If you would like to be part of the Scout Network or the Scout Academy, you can contact us here.

FPL Family

Alongside FPL Family’s normal Sunday evening live stream, last week Lee appeared on the Official FPL Podcast talking about all things Gameweek 4.

Sam also wrote her most recent Pro Pundit article on the importance of underlying stats and the eye test in deciding on what to do with your FPL players.

FPL Nymfria

Nymfria released her lasted video on her YouTube channel reviewing her Wildcard and also previewing Gameweek 4.

She also recorded her Fantasy Football Scout-sponsored Dream Team Stream, where the community helped to pick the team that they thought would make the FPL Dream Team for the coming Gameweek.

El Statto

This week, El Statto published two articles.

The first looked at the fallout of playing a Wildcard in Gameweek 3 when FPL returns were generally low and how it effected forward planning, while the second piece looked at hauls versus returns and who is best placed to return big.

FPL Poker Player

One of the newer members of the Scout Network, FPL Poker Player this week published his weekly FPL Poker Tables blog. The tables contain the usual mix of reviewing and contextualising the performance of his spreadsheet’s predictions from the previous Gameweek, and highlighting key points of interest regarding the upcoming Gameweek’s scoreline predictions, clean sheet probabilities, expected goals and player points.

FPL Poker Player also made his blog public for the first time. This is the first instance in which the FPL Poker Player spreadsheets are available for purchase, and season-long subscriptions have also been made available.

The betting-arm spin-off account from FPL Poker Player identified five bets that met the twin criteria of being consistent with his spreadsheet’s predictions and representing value at the current odds available.

We Are Brighton

The folks at We Are Brighton published their Gameweek 4 preview article (courtest of Fantasy Football Scout!), looking at the best Brighton assets for the week as well as a short review of the other FPL options and go-to captaincy options.

Spotlight: FPL Take the Hit

FPL Take the Hit is the culmination of two Australian brothers’ love of both the beautiful game and the Premier League.

Mick and Joff go live every Thursday evening at 8.30pm (Melbourne time)/11.30am (London time) on Youtube, with the subsequent replay and audio podcast version also available.

The FPL Take the Hit boys lay out their hilarious take on the FPL world with a dose of brotherly love, wisdom and positivity that will hopefully elevate managers to new levels.

With 14 years of experience under their belts and eight top 15k finishes, Mick and Joff love playing the game in their own style, taking hits and enjoying the ride, no matter whether a red or green arrow falls their way.

The one key principle that the boys share is a fearless attitude to playing FPL.

“Coming together once a week to talk FPL is what we do, we have done it for years now, so why not record it? I mean, we know what we are talking about, we are pretty funny fellows, I’m sure other managers will love listening to us ramble on, don’t you?”

“Yeah alright, let’s do this.”

This fateful conversation between the brothers bore the fruit of their first podcast over two seasons ago. That podcast has blossomed into a fully-fledged YouTube channel with interactive streams every week.

Mick runs the Twitter account while Joff runs the Instagram page.

FPL Take the Hit also have their own Patreon account.

This week. FPL Take the Hit have introduced a brand new live stream format, with interactive timed intervals for those managers that would like to skip to their favourite parts.

They have included all-new graphics and videos to make their live streams an even nicer experience for their viewers, by using a green screen to add to the quality of the content they produce.

As FPL Take the Hit always say: remember to stay positive, accept the reds and embrace those green arrows!

    So 4.9 itb 1 FT..

No brainer Foden to Son yes? Was going to get Bruno, but over next 4 I think Son gets more.
    A. Yes
    B. No, wait a bit for internationals

    McCarthy Button

    Robbo Trent Justin (4.5 4.0)

    Kdb Salah Foden Hamez (Biss)

    Mitro Wilson Brewster

    Cheers!

Yes...Son and Salah don’t have international games so that part is safe...others could get injured though, or get back late like Hamez

If you can wait then I would, just in case of injuries but it's definitely a no brainer move!

Thank you for replying both of you. I wouldn’t mind catching the imminent rise that’s all but it’s risky that others get injured I guess. At least I know it’s the right 1 thanks..

Does most of you think going with say Trent is worth it over 3 potential big scoring defenders? Given Im probably never going to captain a defender.

    TAA + 4.5 + 4.5

    OR

Chilwell + Digne + Reguilon (or any combination for the same value)

Yes, he's worth it. Robbo if on WC though as he's looked better.
Once the two 4.5s are nice and attacking because CS difficult to predict atm.

Currently deciding this on WC at the moment. Have a feeling it will be hard to pick two good 4.5's that will continue to score well. Maybe I need to make some more money to upgrade one.

I don’t think TAA is worth having until he looks to be getting a decent mix of CS and attacking points....currently not getting either and Adrian in goal is going to mean less CS

On WC - which looks better?:

    A) Robbo, Maupay
    B) TAA, Watkins

Currently on A as Robbo has looked a lot better and underlying stats also have more promise but .... we all know what TAA can do on his day. Maupay vs Watkins is very close stats-wise!

Trents underlying stats are still decent tbh. I think it’s worth keeping him personally.. I’m keeping Robbo as well but get it may be the wrong thing to do..I’m going along the lines of they’ll haul soon imo

New season, other teams are clearly targeting his side as he's a worse defender than Robbo. It's working too, so more teams are likely to copy that strategy

It should also be prohibited to have all these FPL 'community' people hawking their wares on here (this article) without a star system similar to CL winners having stars on the shirt.

All these FPL scout network contributors should have stars beside their names corresponding to the number of top 10k finishes.

I'm a bit of a kneejerker and like transferring to build up value. I haven't used my wildcard yet.
So far with no transfers and leaving my team a dead one I would have 263 total points with a TV of £100.1 and that's even with Aubameyang permanent captain. Instead with hits and some stupidity I'm now on 246 points but a team value of £100.9.
I know this is only 4 weeks but along with previous seasons checking your starting dead team vs final overall points, is there an argument (unless you're team is rubbish) to just let the team be dead and only transfer out players who:
    • Are clearly subs/out of favour e.g. Pepe and Vinagre (in the case of my 1st GW squad)
    • Are injured for more than 2 GWs (don't mention Son haha!)
    • Have blanked for 4 GWs in a row
    and additionally
    • Not worry about team value
    • Only wildcard in an emergency (even with fixture swings).

This isn't revolutionary and a bit long but I'd be interested to here your thought's. I'm just thinking unless you're lucky being more cautious with transfers will result in better points if your starting GW1 squad is not terrible. But the problem is we want to tinker to have more fun with the game!

Good point but the fact remains even leaving a dud like Pepe, an underperforming Aubameyang and Martial I'd have still scored more. Transferring in players like Sterling, KDB, Podence and Jimenez have not paid off. I'm not saying transfers are bad but if I didn't do hits and try to be clever, even keeping some duds I would have scored more. Only transferring in the worst case scenarios, not worrying about team value and wildcarding in an emergency where you have 4-5 worst case scenarios (injury, string of blanks, not playing etc) could be valuable. Then with captains identify the best perma captain early on. Lots of people find that their dead GW1 teams outscores the team they spend ages tweaking, and if you have an alright playing bench of a 4.0M/4.5M GK, 4.5M playing defender, 4.5 playing defender, 4.5 playing midfielder could avoid transfers.
The game is about fun and this approach would not be that fun, but it could score more points.

Leaving the team completely dead isn't a good idea - fixtures and form do change throughout the season. You do need to have some patience, though. Moves should be made for at least a 4 week horizon and never for a single gameweek - no matter how good the fixture looks on paper! You can't predict anything in 1 GW, but over 4-6 you can start to expect the better players who are in form and have good fixtures to outscore those who don't. Over a whole season you can predict things; KDB will outscore Bissouma over 38 gameweeks, but not necessarily in any given one.

I'm not saying leave it completely dead but transferring more sparingly and only transfer if there have been a clear run of blanks, >2 week injury and player downgraded to a sub. Obviously if you GW1 team turns out badly wildcard after 4 weeks, but if the GW1 does OK or well from the start minimise changes. The fixtures are important but not everything but worrying about form I'd say could generate more points, whilst having a spine of 3 premium players for captaincy to cover the best fixtures. Often swapping mid-price and low-price players for fixtures doesn't work that great (with some exceptions like Antonia vs Norwich last year).

I think we're basically agreeing. My key point is that the shorter the time period you look over, the less predictive power you have. It's pointless doing anything for a single fixture - you need to spend the valuable transfers with an eye to getting an improvement over several weeks. Whether you personally choose to make those transfers based on form, fixtures, underlying stats or the eye test or whatever is a personal thing, but make sure it's for the medium-long term.

There's nearly always a team you could have constructed in GW1 and left alone which would have come #1 in the world. That doesn't mean anyone would have picked it in GW1, of course.

I don't think I've seen one for last season, but there were some very high scoring ones; having KDB as (C) with Lundstram (VC) was a key because it turns out that all of Lundstrams big hauls came on weeks when KDB didn't play...

Couldn't agree more. Hindsight posts only portray that even the best decision-making can be fallible in the short-term, but have greater chances of success in the long-term, obviously, as your posts above suggest.

On form, the 2nd. If you rate Leeds defence & don't have other issues (have to wait a week) then sure.

What type of manager you are ??
Do you keep swapping player's like me ? 😛

Jimmy can be annoying if that's the case. Long term he'll score most points amongst them IMO.

      Atm B is easy choice.

Depends if you put value on fixtures.

This season has been completely bonkers thus far so would be inclined to go with someone with attacking threat short term.

Bellerin seems to be a decent threat last couple of weeks.

Otherwise go for a 4.5m that's doing similar; KWP or Dallas.

Yes PVA (5.4) should be a great pick, didn't suggest bcoz his budget was 5.3.
and Palace not looking solid compared to Villa. But early days never know..

Where are the weak links guys - 1.7 ITB

    McCarthy (4.0)
TAA - Coady - Mitchell (Ayling, Saliba)
    Salah - KDB - Son - Klich (4.5)
    Jimenez - DCL - Adams

If you want them all listed; 4.0 keeper, Mitchell, Saliba, 4.5 mid, Adams and to a degree Klich.

Adams & Klich aren't strong enough options, hence the reason you have 1.7m itb. You need a stronger 4th mid and/or stronger 3rd striker. Lot's of options to spend your cash - what's your FT situ?

Problem with intl break is it breaks form - teams that really kicked off can lose momentum and those that performed badly can switch it on

Not saying that it’s always going to happen but guaranteed there will be a complete turn around for a team or two

It'll be interesting to see. There was a short break from last season and some teams have come back looking jaded. I can understand the Manchester aspect and lack of preseason, but Wolves? They performed better last season when they were deluged - interestingly the same as Spurs are doing now
