How to play UEFA Champions League Fantasy Football – a beginner’s guide

The group stage of the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign gets underway just after the October international break – and the official Fantasy game for the competition is live.

Unlimited transfers are allowed before play starts, so you can begin tinkering with your teams now.

The free-to-play game comes with the usual array of prizes, from UEFA Champions League final tickets to the new Playstation 5.

We’ll be bringing you more content on this game than ever before, with position-by-position guides over the next fortnight and regular articles to follow when the action commences.

Liverpool, Chelsea and the two Manchester clubs are among the 32 teams involved in this year’s tournament, with the six group stage matchdays all taking place before Christmas and the knockout rounds starting next February.

In this introductory piece, we’ll talk you through the basics of the game.

BRIEF RULES

To summarise the game in one sentence: UCL Fantasy managers get €100m to spend on a squad of 15 players, who earn points based on their on-field performances in the Champions League.

Anyone who has played Fantasy Premier League will have no trouble in picking the game up, as many of the rules are exactly the same or very similar:

  • An initial budget of €100m (which rises to €105m from the last 16 onwards)
  • Pick a squad of 15 players
  • No more than three players from each club (that threshold rises once the knockout stages begin)
  • Select a starting XI in a valid formation for every ‘matchday’ (the UCL equivalent of a ‘Gameweek’, which incorporates both the Tuesday and Wednesday fixtures)
  • Select a captain who earns double points
  • Make free transfers between matchdays

Those are the fundamentals but there are one or two quirks of the game that require a bit of explaining, which we will cover below.

SUBSTITUTIONS

If you prefer the hands-off approach to Fantasy management, auto-subs occur if any of your starting XI fail to feature and there is a playing substitute on your bench – providing that player doesn’t break the formation rules (a minimum of three defenders, two midfielders and one forward).

Where UCL Fantasy differs is that it also gives managers the chance to make manual substitutions instead.

After all matches on a single day (eg Tuesday) have finished and before the next matches within that matchday kick off (eg Wednesday), UCL Fantasy managers can:

  • Replace a maximum of four players (unless they have been sent off), with any of their substitutes whose teams are yet to play within the matchday.
  • Change their captain to another player from their squad whose team is yet to play. The original captain’s double points will be lost and the new captain’s score for that matchday will be doubled.

As an example, say you have selected Mason Greenwood (€7.5m) for Manchester United’s matchday 1 clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday 20 October.

If the United midfielder fails to feature or returns a middling score of, say, two points, you can then replace him with one of your substitutes who is in action on Wednesday 21 October.

TRANSFERS

As we mentioned earlier, free transfers are allowed between matchdays.

Like in Fantasy Premier League, UCL Fantasy managers can roll a maximum of one free transfer – although only in the group stage.

For every transaction you make beyond your quota of free transfers, you’ll take a hit of four points.

The below table details how many moves are allowed at each stage of the competition:

PhaseNumber of free transfers
Before the group stage beginsUnlimited
Matchday 1–62 per matchday
Between Matchday 6 and round of 16 1st legUnlimited
Before round of 16 2nd leg3
Before quarter-final 1st leg5
Before quarter-final 2nd leg3
Before semi-final 1st leg5
Before semi-final 2nd leg3
Before final5

CHIPS

There are two chips available to UCL Fantasy managers: Wildcard and Limitless.

These chips can be used only once per season and, once played, can’t be cancelled.

Wildcard

As in FPL, the Wildcard gives you the chance to change your squad as much as you like. When you play it you can make free unlimited transfers and any players you transfer in will stay in your squad once that matchday has finished.

Limitless

Limitless is the equivalent of FPL’s Free Hit chip and gives managers the chance to change their squad for one matchday only.

Once the matchday has finished, your squad will return to how it was before you played the Limitless chip.

Rather excitingly, there are no budget restrictions when activating Limitless – so, should you wish, you can pack your squad with the most expensive assets in the game.

SCORING SYSTEM

Again, the scoring system is a very familiar one.

Most of the player actions and the points on offer tally with FPL, although there are one or two notable differences.

A goal scored from outside the box gets an additional point, for example, while the acts of winning and conceding a penalty are rewarded and punished respectively.

Players also gain points through ball recoveries, which gives the more defensive-minded players a chance to rack up a tidy score.

Over half of Virgil van Dijk‘s (€6.0m) 2019/20 points total in UCL Fantasy was made up by recoveries, for example.

      Toss up

1- Castagne and Saiss is unknowable but Castagne plays Midfield, so huge plus
2- Grealish is not as good as Pulisic but Pulisic gets hurt all the time
3-Wilson is a known 6.5M forward, Watkins just had a career game, like Grealish

By the way, Villa played Fulham and won 3-0...but Grealish only got 8 points and Watkins 2. So, they are alright, but they are now coming off a career performance

If Martial slowly drop to 8.5 and DCL rising to over 8.0, that could be a good swap (later on)

Never say never when it comes to football. Last season how many people curse DCL, Zaha, Maupay, and suddenly they're in everyone's team 😀

When Martial later shows some form and he's cheap, topped with friendly fixtures, why not

Cavani transfer probably ended any appeal for Martial as a FPL asset.

I wouldn’t trust Cavani at all, especially with his injury record but him being in the squad means Martial is either a rotation risk or will play some minutes as a winger instead.

I'm looking at this Aston Villa team and it looks extremely strong all over the park

Martinez - Top goalie. Will be great for them this season.
Cash - New signing, attacking, good player.
Konsa - Young, strong, good in the air. Solid overall.
Mings - England International. Would get into a lot of top sides at CB.
Targett - The one weak link. But as long as he plays solidly defensively, he'll do.
Douglas Luiz - Starting for Brazil in the DM role alongside Casemiro. Very good.
McGinn - Box to box mid. Very handy player, great energy, good eye for goal.
Trezeguet - Nothing special, but he was very important in keeping Villa up and his kept his place deservedly.
Barkley - Will be allowed freedom in the #10 role. Has the potential to be great. Can he be consistent?
Grealish - The star man. He will create a ton of chances and that is insanely valuable for any team. With Watkins in who's better than anyone they had last season, it could be a really productive partnership.
Watkins - Very good forward. Was excellent for Brentford with his overall play. No pens and still hit 24 goals last year.

This Villa team individually, let alone collectively, look capable of a very good run this year. I think their team is closer to Leicester/Wolves type of teams than Brighton/Southampton in terms of personnel. Not gonna make outlandish predictions but top half should be readily attainable if Watkins and Barkley can perform well for the whole season. The potential is there for more too if Watkins/Barkley can convert their chances.

Therein lies the issue. For my money, Wilson is the better and more clinical player, but BHA are perhaps the more creative team. I’ve gone with Wilson from the start, and I haven’t considered switching.

The GW1 'dream team' or kings of the gameweek scored 153 points (or 173 including captain points from the most owned player)
These players collectively saw +2.2m net transfers in for the following GW, with ownership doubling
Their collective score in GW2 was 26 points (or 29 including the captain points from the most owned player), vs. a GW2 average of 59
Their score in GW3 was 39 points (or 44 including captain), vs. a GW3 average of 43
Their score in GW4 was 46 points (or 59 including captain) vs. a GW4 average of 48

GW1 dream team collective points in GW2-GW4 = 132 including captain vs. GW2-GW4 collective average of 150

I haven't got the full database on this, but it is looking like there is a more than strong correlation with net transfers in and previous GW score. But there unfortunately has so far been a pretty strong negative correlation between net transfers and current GW score.

Vardy is the post child for this so far! https://i.imgur.com/SfY0c2Y.png

Excellent analysis. "Form," as defined by FPL (ppm over recent matches), has a close to 0.0 correlation with a player's points in the next game week. But everyone on here loves the term "Form over Fixtures." Statistically, nothing could be further from the truth.

Well that’s just not true at all is it.

Looking one week into the future is impossible, but over the long term the usual greatest predictor or goals is...previous goals.

The correlation is tiny though, R squared of less than 0.2 or something.

The randomness is why we all love football and why people’s FPL teams look different.

Yes. Previous goals over a season, but not necessarily goals over the past 3 or 4 games. And certainly not over 1 game. Bringing in - or getting rid of - Jamie Vardy, or anyone else, because he did or didn't score a goal in the past week, is laughable. But it's all anyone seems to do around here.

It's just like stock market. When there's a stock performing, transaction volume will increase because most people will assume there's something good and the rising will resume but that's not 100% guaranteed that in the next day or two, it will keep rising. Most of the times, it will stay flat for few GWs and some people don't have patience and dump them. When it performs again, the transaction volume will rise again etc

I think you do need to boost the defence a bit. Justin/Mitchell may not start much longer -(Pereira, PVA back soon), Lamptey only played half last match and is a very young player, and Chilwell might rotate a bit with Azpi with Champ Leagues Games etc. I think one of the first two should be a more 'set and forget' type of defender, tho goodness knows who with results the way they are!

Hi guys just a quick question.. how will Rbrewster fit into the Sheffield United team? will he play with mcgoldrick and Burke together? Or will one drop to the bench? If Brewster starts.....

Dunno, but you’ve got to think he’ll be a starter for one of them. They broke their transfer record to get him.

What is the reason for Ole to sub out Bruno after first half time?
I think Bruno is the best MU player during loss vs Spurs

Rashford & Bruno both were unhappy with him not protesting against ref decision. As per rumours at least.

Opening your premier league account with a hattrick against champions Liverpool is incredible

What are your thoughts on Watkins? Too early to gamble or worth a punt at 5.9 playing for a very attacking aston villa side?

i mean i wouldn't be clamouring to get him in but if you have a striker you're not happy with and you're looking for a 6m striker then I'd be interested.

I have the same 3 players and I'm not really that interested in selling any of them just yet. Unless I sell KDB for Son (only move I like) I'm probably going to just roll my transfer so I can have a better decision on who to get rid of.

Yeah likes of Grealish McGinn Barkley and Cash are good supply line for Watkins.

They were really attacking last season as well but didn't have a good striker like Watkins ti finish off the chances

No argument against Grealish. Great option as well. Grealish was 4th in entire Europe for chances created last season. Watkins is going to benefit from paying alongside Grealish by getting plenty of chances.

The Watkins Wangdoodle? Pukki burned a lot of teams last season. I'm happy with Martinez. I held ElMo last season too and was happy with him. But Watkins is maybe more likely to be a Wilson of last season, score, assist, blank, blank, assist.

Martinez, Grealish, Watkins and Konsa are all good prospects.
I currently have two Villa goalkeepers though, so I will need to replace Steer if I want to include two Villa outfielders.
And until Watkins gets attacking returns in more than one match I probably prefer Maupay, who has already returned in three different matches.

Good morning FPL family! I rarely post on here, but in this mad season I’d really appreciate any thoughts on this WC draft:

    McCarthy/Forster
    Chillwell/Dallas/Justin/Mitchell/Robbo
    KDB/Grealish/Salah/Son/Soucek
    Brewster/DCL/Jimi

£0.1 ITB. No Man Utd (not currently causing sleepless nights). Flexible 4-4-2, 3-4-3 or 3-5-2, depending on fixtures.

Thanks, and hope everyone is well.
