Can £4.0m defender Kilman nail down starting place in Wolves defence?

Leeds 0-1 Wolves

  • Goals: Raúl Jiménez (£8.5m)
  • Assists: Max Kilman (£4.0m)
  • Bonus points: Kilman x3, Jiménez x2, Romain Saïss x1 (£5.2m)

A View to a Kil

Max Kilman (£4.0m) has made a meteoric rise to the top of the budget defender pool with a second successive start and second successive points haul.

The Wolves centre-back has only played two from a possible five matches this season but has already scored 21 points, the joint-most of any defender priced at £4.5m or below.

Incredibly, the player has secured maximum bonus points in each of his two performances so far and he added an assist in the 1-0 win over Leeds.

“He deserves (the man of the match award). He’s been brilliant. He’s been with us for years. He’s listened. He’s a great lad. He gives us a bit of balance on that left-hand side. All the time. He loves having battles with Adama. Nobody goes near Adama in training but he full-on fights with him.” – Conor Coady

“He has become stronger as time has gone by. I’m proud of the response he has given and the credit goes to him. When the chance comes, you have to respond, and Max did that.” – Nuno Espirito Santo

The question facing Fantasy managers is now whether or not Kilman can nail down a regular starting berth in the Wolves side.

Even though he has been praised by captain and manager alike, unfortunately, it is difficult to say with certainty that Kilman will retain his place. This particular issue certainly one that requires more data.

The reason why Kilman has enjoyed starts in each of the last two Gameweeks is that regular centre-back option Romain Saïss (£5.2m) has been forced to cover the left wing-back role in light of injuries to Jonny (£5.4m) and Marçal (£4.9m) as well as the departure of Ruben Vinagre (£4.3m).

With the arrival of Rayan Aït-Nouri (£5.0m) and Marçal returning from his knock on Monday night, there are more options for Nuno Espirito Santo to choose from in that position moving forward.

While Saïss has enjoyed his time bombing forward as a wing-back, which we’ll highlight in more detail shortly, he has looked exposed at times playing in a wider role, caught out by the pacier wingers and full-backs.

Therefore, with left wing-back reinforcements on the way, Nuno looks set for a tough decision between Saïss or Kilman to start in the back-three alongside Conor Coady (£5.0m) and Willy Boly (£5.5m) long-term.

Do as the Romains do

While there remain uncertainties about Wolves best back-five, Saïss continues to offer excellent value for his increasing ownership.

Nuno’s men have kept a clean sheet in three of their five matches this season, and the Moroccan has walked away with bonus points on each of those occasions, even though he only has one attacking return to his name. A total of six in that department puts Saïss behind only Lucas Digne (£6.2m) on seven among defenders after five Gameweeks.

That has taken him to a tally of 31 points for the season thus far, more than any other defender and sure to induce more price rises ahead of home meetings with Newcastle and Crystal Palace.

Saïss was unfortunate not to walk away with attacking returns at Elland Road, whose incredible rifled effort into the bottom right-hand corner of Illan Meslier‘s (£4.5m) goal was chalked off for an offside in the build-up.

He was also denied an assist in the first half when Leeds’ youthful goalkeeper produced an impressive stop from a Daniel Podence (£5.6m) effort.

However, while Saïss has looked exciting in the last two matches, we have to bring Wolves’ selection dilemma at the back into the conversation. If Aït-Nouri or Marçal slots in at left wing-back against Newcastle and Saïss returns to the back-three, he will almost certainly enjoy much less time in the opposition half.

Dear Podence

Podence owners were asked to show a little more patience once again as he proved one of Wolves’ most dangerous players at Elland Road but came away with a second successive blank.

His powerful first-half shot forced an impressive save out of Meslier, who sprawled to stop a left-footed curling effort in the second half too.

While neither of those chances went in, the fact that a Newcastle that has conceded seven goals in the last two Gameweeks is up next for Wolves is perhaps enough to hold Podence.

That said, he was replaced by Adama Traoré (£6.4m) in the 64th minute with Pedro Neto‘s (£5.5m) involvement continuing until the 89th.

Leeds United XI (4-1-4-1): Meslier; Dallas, Struijk (Hernández 75′), Koch, Ayling; K Phillips; Harrison (Raphinha 82′), Rodrigo, Klich, Costa (Poveda-Ocampo 71′); Bamford.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patrício; Kilman, Coady, Boly; Saïss, Moutinho (Neves 82′), Dendoncker, Semedo; Neto (Marçal 89′), Jiménez, Podence (Traoré 65′).

He is atm but prob won't be over the season...Jose will revert to type I reckon and won't be nearly as many goals once things settle

        Why not?

Imo mour has unleashed his true potential.. playing like a number 8+10 n 9 sometimes.. maybe goals will be less than seasons before for a better player, real and FPL wise

For now but a strong second season start was always expected, Jose's been doing it his entire career. After a while he moves into a more conservative, focus on grinding out wins approach and the goals dry up. Also GW10 Aguero swap could prove beneficial.

Yep it's the normal plan or approach for the so called 'big teams', go all out attack early days and keep it tight at later stage when the competitions get going.

Just have to ride on Kane until the wheels off.

Fyi i might go kane n kun in gw9 😉

Looks a force, for a while he was getting marked out of games but with son and bale around him he’s going to pick up A lot more space and actually have runners ahead, I think we (spurs) could do well if he stays fit for the season but that will depend on improving at the back a bit

Tough for me to say.. but in reality, You guys are definitely title contenders this season, unless Europa taking its toll. I wouldn't rule out triple up spurs attack in near future. With 3.7 itb and grealish already in, I can do Barkley to Bale straight swap if he gets it going

Really unsure on who to captain this week guys. Kane has an excellent record vs BUR but they picked up a tiny bit of form in the last game and could be tighter defensively. Salah on the other hand is versing an awful SHU side but LIV are missing some key players and may have a different approach to the game. With that said please help me pick one

    A Kane
    B Salah

It'll be interesting to see how Klopp approaches today's game vs Ajax w/o VVD. Either he goes full on offense, decides to drop the defensive line for solidity instead, or attempts to maintain the same approach which could be disastrous. Hopefully, we'll learn a lot today about how Liverpool are looking to set up.

They ll probably get the same points, most people will go with Salah. I believe LIV will just try to get the 3 points, i know SHU are not a good team but LIV without VvD may lose their balance. Spurs at this point are more explosive and i expect them after last GW's result to play 90 mins like crazy. Pending midweek games I ll go with Harry.

Mornings folks. I need to ditch KDB. Would you recommend..

    A) Get Mané in for a hit and play 442 with Konsa
    B) Spread the cash and get Grealish + Hamez for a hit and play 352
    C) Just KDB to Grealish/Hamez for free

A means an easy downgrade to get KDB in later..

If you took your wc now, you surely cant handle Justin, Mitchell and Kilman all together. Maybe all three during the next few GWs wont start. Also Jorginho is not needed on the bench, i d say get a 4.5 mid to bench every week and upgrade defence. And get another playing def instead of Justin. Front 7 are all players who scored last week, you think they ll all score this week as well?

Trying to invest heavy up front as clean sheets seem rare this season and defence points very low. Get what you say for sure though. I only need 3 defenders to play but mitchell and kilmans time could be limited for sure.

    B: KDB + Havertz >> Salah + Bruno (-4)
    C: KDB + Jimmy >> Salah + Kane (-4)
    D: Something else

C seems the logical choice, although Jimenez is a good choice with good fixtures to be transferred out for a hit.

    Need some help here please...

I know that the obvious move is Jimenez/Ings to Kane, but I’m not going to captain him this GW and Jimenez/Ings have a decent game. so... any suggestions what to do here?

2.4 Itb and 1 ft (willing to take a hit)

    Martinez
    TAA Robo KWP Mitchel (Justin)
    Salah Son Barnes (poveda stephens)
    Jiménez Ings DCL

    Cheers!

Upgrade one of your benched mids and play him instead of Mitchell. No need to take a hit this week i d play Justin ahead of KWP, expect ARS - LEI to be a very close game.

interesting... but keeping Barnes? I don’t know. I thought maybe bringing James instead and upgrade Justin to semedo for a hit

Taking a hit for a defender is not sth i would suggest since you have 3 defenders to start. But having two non playing mids looks the first priority to fix. If you have this move in mind, do it, the point is to enjoy the game not do what others suggest. Good luck with your choice.

Mark Sutherns reckons it will be Grealish's choice and he will take them to boost England chances, not sure if that stacks up but interesting theory. Can see them getting a few pens the way they are setup.

This Jimenez to Kane (-4) decision is really doing my head in. One of the hardest I've ever had to make in FPL, not exaggerating.

It should pay off over the next 3 even if Jimenez scores in GW6, right? I've only taken one hit so far, but now aggressiveness seems to be starting to pay off a bit more.

Jimenez has only ever double returned 6 times in 81 games. He won’t punish you too heavily if you sell and you can always get him back at a later stage.

Jimenez is a season keeper for me, he's so reliable and consistant in terms of points.

      1. FPL Theorist

That was my intention too, but he's only 14th in xG among forwards this year vs 3rd last year. I had him from the start over the likes of Werner and Ings, very much against the FFS template.

The team chemistry seems disrupted with all the personnel changes, and they seem to be looking to win every game 1-0.

        1. Bavarian

I'm sure he will progress during the season and reach his average, he's the main man at wolves and he will do well... my forward line is and always will be Kane-Jimenez-DCL

If this happens then I'll bring him back in when I wildcard. For now I can't justify keeping.

They have never been particularly attacking, it really depends what you want for that position. Jimi is not and never really has been explosive but will tick along all season picking up points. I have him and certainly won't be taking out ahead of Newcastle at home, i intend to keep all season. No Euorpean games is a huge plus for him imo as he's basically guaranteed 90 mins every week. I would't be worrying about XG after 5 games as it's a very small sample size.

The actual goals don't look any better than the xG. The only teams that have scored fewer than Wolves are the bottom 3.

I’m in the same dilemma, and my opinion at the moment is that if you don’t captain Kane this GW maybe you should give Jiménez another game and bringing Kane next GW.

let’s say hypothetically Jiménez scores one plus the bps and the hit, kane needs a brace just to break even ):

It's a good point, maybe this is the right approach. However, I do have another move I want to make for GW7. I have not made a single transfer all season in defence and it needs addressing at some point.

For me Kane is better than Jimenez, if you look the goals against leeds is lucky as i think if it was not deflected keeper would save that.

How many assist and goals did kane have compare to Jimenez? I can see wolves attacking getting weaker. 2m+ will justify the it.

Kane just got up, wait for Spurs game then decide. I suspect Mou may use Vinicius at some point. Also Moura, Lamela may get minutes. Hit should pay off immediately although i d try to drop someone else to bring Kane

Even if it 'pays off in the next 3' that's false logic as you could do it for free next game week and still have him for 2 of those next 3. The hit is just for this week

      1. FPL Theorist
        • 4 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

True at some level, but the team needs cleaning up and I have another move I want to make next week that will also require a hit if I delay the Kane move.

It certainly would have been much easier to just WC at some point to clean up my GW1 mistakes, but I'm still banking on a late WC paying off when it's truly needed.

Similar decision and I decided to go for it.

Simply put, there are many players cheaper than Jiminez that will score more than him, so it’s not a case of fear of losing out with Jimenez as it was in seasons past. The same goes for Ings really as both are at that difficult price point.

Actually rather than a hit I played my Wild Card for a major over haul, looking at Kane, Aguero & DCL as my attacking front line (Aguero most nailed and cheapest of the premiums in to the City attack).

You can’t have them all and GW9 will see me with 2 free transfers to bring in one or two Utd premiums for Kane, Aguero, Salah or Son

It’s tough picking teams at the moment 🙂

1.1 cheaper, and that goes a long way and gives me Reguilón (will play him against any team) over a 4.5 defender

          Sterling & 4.5
          Aguero & Reguilon

Would you take a hit to change anything, change the bench or gtg?

-only 2 less chances created than JRod
