FFS International: Who are the best West Ham assets for their strong run of fixtures?

As Fantasy Football Scout continues to expand to the furthest reaches of the globe, we take a look at the newest members of FFS International and get their views on which West Ham assets are most appealing for their favourable run of fixtures.

Fantasy Football Scout’s global community continues to grow with every passing year. Over the last season c. 4.7m Fantasy managers have visited the site from six continents and 234 countries.

As well as the United Kingdom, the list of top 10 countries is made up of:

  • The United States of America
  • The Republic of Ireland
  • Norway
  • Australia
  • India
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore
  • Sweden
  • Nigeria

With the continued growth of the Fantasy Football Scout userbase, we have developed FFS International and launched the Arabic language section of our website to enable us to increase and improve the content we can offer globally.

The Fantasy Football Scout community already contains Pro Pundits from all over the world, the Scout Network and Scout Academy both have global members, and now under the banner of FFS International, we can bring together much of the best content from across the planet.

This week we have added five new members to the FFS International community:

Are West Ham assets good options? If so who should we invest in?

The Hammers have just entered a nice run of fixtures which lasts right through until beyond Gameweek 18 and, as a result, they are on the radars of many FPL managers.

Some of the members of FFS International assess which West Ham players are the best options over this period.

Overlooked Fornals can benefit from West Ham's appealing fixture run

Vladimir Coufal (£4.5m) is our top choice from West Ham. The Czech defender has been impressive, playing every minute of every game since his arrival in the Premier League ahead of Gameweek 4. In the five matches he played, he has two assists and two clean sheets, making him arguably the best defender in the game at his price point of £4.5m. His low ownership of 1.5% also makes him a great differential.

Pablo Fornals (£6.4m) also looks like a good option. He is currently West Ham’s top FPL points scorer. Whilst listed in the game as a midfielder, he is deployed on the left side of the front three and brings guile and creativity to the Hammers’ attack. He has already matched his goal tally of his previous season and has three assists to his name. Regardless of whoever West Ham play as their frontman, Fornals is capable of contributing.

Tomas Soucek (£4.9m) has been the mainstay of the West Ham side since joining in January 2020. He has the most FPL points (27) of any midfielder priced at less than £5.0m so he makes a perfect choice as a fifth FPL midfielder you may or may not want to play. He’ll definitely get the minutes and is a goal threat going forward at set pieces. He has 44 goals in 206 games in his career – a very decent record.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) caught the eye in Gameweek 8, earning a whopping 15 points with a clean sheet, a penalty save and three bonus points. However, we do not recommend bringing him in. It is not often that goalkeepers earn the maximum bonus and that usually happens when the custodian in question makes a penalty save and keeps a clean sheet. Against Fulham, Fabianski was lucky as Ademola Lookman fluffed his spot-kick with a Panenka attempt. All in all, penalty saves are rare: Fabianski himself has made just seven of them in his 14-year Premier League career. Going for another ‘keeper like Alex McCarthy saves you 0.5m. Another alternative would be Edouard Mendy, who at £5.1m has kept three clean sheets in the four games he played.

Block 5

In terms of schedule, West Ham has a kind fixture list over the next five Gameweeks, which invites a deeper look into their assets and where to invest.

From an attacking point of view, the loss of Michail Antonio (£6.2m) to injury was a big blow. Out of all of West Ham’s attacking assets, Antonio was the one with the big underlying numbers and attacking contributions. He was also very consistent against all types of opponents. Aside from Antonio, the rest are not proven at this level or their underlying numbers are not strong enough to warrant strong consideration. Soucek, however, looks to be one of the best enablers in the game this year and would be perfect as the 11th pick in your starting line-up.

I’d be more inclined to invest in West Ham’s backline given that they have the best defensive fixtures over the next five, according to the Season Ticker. Aaron Cresswell (£5.1m) looks to be the standout option given that he has multiple routes to points, but in that price range, I’d be more tempted by Joao Cancelo or even a punt on Reece James rather than spend that amount on a West Ham defender. At £4.5m, however, both Coufal and Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) offer great value. Coufal is a more certain starter if any change in formation occurs, and his safe playing style performs better on the Bonus Points System. On the other hand, Masuaku’s underlying numbers are better and his more adventurous playing style gives him a better opportunity to contribute in attack. All three are good options, and your choice may well depend on your budget and your squad depth.

FPL Crypto

It’s been quite a reversal of fortunes for clubs like West Ham and Aston Villa, after finishing 16th and 17th last season respectively. And here we are giving serious thought to FPL asset double-ups in both cases as their fixture schedules ease.

I’ve looked closely at the numbers. West Ham, in Gameweeks 1-4, showed early signs of defensive improvement before facing Spurs, Man City and Liverpool. During these opening Gameweeks, the Hammers conceded only seven shots on target (the lowest in the Premier League), kept two clean sheets and conceded only four goals.

That prompted me to move for Cresswell last week as their fixtures begin to take on a similar path to those opening Gameweeks. Cresswell has created 17 chances for his teammates thus far, the most out of any other FPL defender.

New signings Coufal and Masuaku are budget entries and play more advanced roles than Cresswell. The two wing-backs have both started every game since Gameweek 4. Fabianski exploded into the frame in Gameweek 8 with 15 points, reminding us all of his proven FPL pedigree; a great set-and-forget option at £5.0m for anyone on a Wildcard this week or miserable Aaron Ramsdale owners, like myself!

Going forward, Antonio could offer tremendous value now at 6.2m, as he resumes training. In my opinion, a fit Antonio trumps any other FPL option in this West Ham side and it will be interesting to see if he recovers sufficiently over the international break. I wouldn’t rule out a Cresswell and Antonio double-up, although there is a lingering worry over the latter’s troublesome hamstrings.

Other great budget striker options have emerged, such as Ollie Watkins and Patrick Bamford, who may be safer choices over Antonio for the medium term at least. Soucek loves a shot, matching Son Heung-min with his goal attempts (18) and shots inside the box (13) numbers this season. For me, he is a very viable and cheap Daniel Podence direct replacement.

American’s Talk FPL

The injury to Antonio came at a very unfortunate time, right when thousands of managers were likely ready to bring him in following the nightmare fixture list to begin the season. Nevertheless, we still see plenty of value in this West Ham side, just no longer from the forward position – at least until Antonio is back and healthy.

Our top recommendation for the friendly fixture turn is Cresswell, as he provides clean sheet potential, attacking threat (from set pieces) and great security for starts. The more budget defensive options of Masuaku and Coufal also look like great picks but both trail Cresswell, due to possible game-time issues for Masuaku (if Moyes ever changed to a back four, he could very well lose his spot) and a bit less attacking potential from Coufal.

Turning to midfield, the two standout options thus far have been Jarrod Bowen (£6.3) and Fornals. However, Said Benrahma (£6.0m) is all of a sudden muddying the waters here, staking his claim for more minutes with an assist and a solid showing last time out against Fulham. It’s unclear who would potentially lose their spot should Benrahma prove too influential to stay on the bench, but that little bit of uncertainty makes us hesitate to dive into any of these assets, and if we had to recommend somebody in this price range across the entire league, would likely opt for the in-form Diogo Jota, Jack Grealish or Wilfried Zaha.

Perhaps the best route into West Ham’s midfield is also the cheapest, with Soucek providing security of starts, strong value, and plenty of attacking potential that finally resulted in his first goal of the season last time out.

Do you have an enabler in att or mid, i.e do you think there is more value in att or mid?

Or maybe you have Soucek as a 4th mid and strengthening the rest of the team even more?

A little but worth the risk given Cancelo's potential I reckon. Worth having a decent sub on the bench

A bit tough to loose Son + Kane after their good service so far. What we need is Kane G Son A or Son G Kane A v MCI then we should be happy enough?

Quite happy with the points we’ve already had from them, can see atleast one or both of them getting a return this week too though. Unsure on weather to move Son on this week or not.

My long term plan was to sell him in GW12.

      From GW12, DCL's fixtures read:
      CHE lei ARS shu MCI

That's abysmal. My ideal replacement would have been Callum Wilson who has:
      WBA lee FUL

from GW 12 to 14. Then I'd get rid of him for someone else as he plays mci LIV LEI over Christmas.

Hopefully he's back from injury by then.

Few issues here but was thinking TAA --> Cresswell / Cancelo (FT) and then wait and see on any int'l injuries before considering moving on Mitro / Wilson / Son for a hit?

    McCarthy
    TAA -- Chilwell -- Justin
    Salah -- Son -- Grealish -- Soucek
    Mitrovic -- Kane -- C.Wilson

    4.0 -- Bissouma -- Targett -- Mitchell [1FT + 3.5m ITB]

Since you can play targett this week, i would just do mitro/wilson to watkins/bamford

No worries, and I agree, I probably can't afford him but Aguero is one of the few City players that has almost always done me well when I've had him but I think he's at a point now where he can't maintain fitness, or if he can it will only be if he's used pretty sparingly (and even at that last season he rarely ever got more than 55-60 minutes per start and that was with him being rotated). It's a shame because he's an exceptional striker but to be fair I think Jesus has earned his shot at being the go-to striker.

TAA to Cancelo and Saïss/ Mitchell to Coufal -4

    Kane DCL Brewster

There's a lot of clamour to get in City and Utd players ahead of the fixture shift. In particular Bruno and KDB/Sterling.

So far this season Bruno has delivered 7.6 ppg. This is substantially better than Sterling (4.7 ppg) and KDB (4.5 ppg).

However, Son (9.2), Grealish (8.6) and Salah (8.4) have delivered better than Bruno. Sterling and KDB are way down the list, behind all of the above, plus the likes of Ziyech (6.8), Zaha (6.8), Mane (6.6), Rodriguez (6.1), etc.

In terms of value (points per million), Fernandes (5.0 ppm), Sterling (2.9 ppm) and KDB (2.3 ppm) are way down the list. Grealish (8.0 ppm), Son (7.7 ppm) and Zaha (7.3 ppm) lead the way.Even Salah (5.4 ppm) outscores Bruno, although Mane (3.8 ppm) lags behind.

I'm wondering why people are so keen to jump ship from the likes of Son or Rodriguez (even Salah has been mentioned) in order to bring in Bruno and/or City mids. Doesn't it seem a bit premature when their returns - especially the City mids - have been less impressive so far this season?

Some people are losing Kane to beef up the midfield. But Kane has a ppg of 10.4 and a ppm of 7.3. Other forwards also offer better ppg and ppm than the like of Bruno, KDB and Sterling.

I get that the fixtures for City and to a lesser extent Utd are really attractive in the coming GWs. But does this warrant losing high scoring players, offering excellent value, for players whose form so far this season has not been impressive?

I guess it's the age old form vs fixtures debate. But interested to hear people's take on this.

It's a risk, but many will probably do it and Son and Kane's value is bound to fall. Then again Kane and Son haven't been pulling up any trees in the last few games.

Fixtures are the only reason for me. And without captaincy, a premium player starts feeling like a burden. Fixtures attract form or something like that...

Can always switch back if it goes wrong.

It's pretty simple. Things will balance soon. Do you really expect KDB to have a 80pts total this season and Son 360 pts total?
In FPL you have to know when it's time to drop a player and to when get a player. Stats don't lie but they can easily change.

Exactly. OP's post is basically suggesting that form over the first 8 games of the season is the greatest indicator of future returns. Sounds ridiculous if you state it bluntly like that.

      2. Bojam
        • 6 Years

No, fair point. But why does everyone (read: loads of people on here) assume that it's the right time? City haven't looked right and it's not a given that Sterling or KDB will burst into life. Sterling started last season well and then went on a long run of low returns before his form picked up again in project restart. KDB had an amazing season but will he necessarily reproduce it?

Spurs are having a really good start to the season and yet the assumption is that they will now what? Fall away? Why? Kane has a track record for consistently high season scores. They've been decling in the last couple of seasons but this is his best ever start to a season so perhaps he's BACK? Son hasn't ever broken the 200 points mark but he usually misses parts of a season due to injury, international committments, etc. Maybe this is his breakout season?

Maybe I'm being overly cautious with City assets but I've not seen anything yet to suggest that they are worth ripping up my team for.

Probably you've answered it yourself there: playing fixtures and presume MUN and MCI will be track bullies. The underlying ppg and ppm make it harder to switch.

Do u expect the players that have performed well so far to maintain that or do u see these them regressing slightly or dramatically and Do u expect players like Kdb, Sterling and Bruno to start performing at a higher level or at least better than they have so far ?

It is Form vs Fixtures debate for sure, but Fixtures do breed Form and moving early can and should help in rank movement, so for someone like me stuck in the 7 figure rank mark I need to do something to rectify that, so moving early for premiums with pedigree that have fixtures in their favor seems an obvious move.

There is obviously the risk that players like Son and Kane continue good form despite tough fixtures or that City and United continue to be erratic or low scoring but this is the right time to make the move and try to capitalise while others are hesitant. That's my view at least.

You've done your ppm sums wrong and not accounted for Bruno playing one fewer game

If you think that son (only one route to points) and Grealish (plays for Aston Villa, doesn't have pens) are sensible comparisons for Bruno, Salah etc then you have painful times coming.

These are the players you hire and fire around players like Bruno and Salah

      1. Bojam
        • 6 Years

Grealish has played one game fewer too don't forget. Villa look to be a better team than Utd so far this season. More settled line-up, clear identity, etc. Barkley and Watkins add a lot to the team. Who knows where they will finish up but Utd have problems which need to be resolved before they mount a serious challenge to the top four. Fernandes is a talisman but so is Grealish. For 3m less, I know who I'd prefer to own right now. Villa's fixtures are also very appealing. If Utd's form improves and Bruno continues to deliver hauls every other game or so then I'll look to bring him in somehow.

I wouldn't look at ppg at this stage of the season. Sample is too small. PPG over 7 or 8 is certainly unsustainable imho.

Indeed. We get 1FT per week, and have 15 players. If we made all our decisions based on the best ppm and ppg across several matches we'd be forever chasing our tails. There has to be a spine to a team and that means owning players who consistently produce the goods, even when when short term options are eclipsing them

Ok, but so far this season, KDB and Sterling have not consistently produced the goods. Other players have. So why jump ship now? If they start to haul and other players fall away then obviously you can make the move. As I said, it just seems a bit premature now given that City in particular have not shown attacking form yet. For me it's better to wait rather than play the hokey cokey.

How do u expect to rise in rank if u always wait for players to start scoring before u buy them ?

You will always be late to the party and hold assets too long, its a losing strategy, or at least low risk low reward.

Also with City they have had very disjointed teams this year, with a new player trying his hand as striker practically every game, Kdb also missed a couple, so now they have a more settled side, I would expect form to improve.

Well the obvious answer to your first question is that you rise in rank by decing to not get in players who are not scoring even though lots of people are, and then they continue to produce meager returns that are outscored by the players you have that are firing on all cylinders

I mean, I'm not putting money on that, but it seems fairly obvious

Yeah but my point is that we don't KNOW if Sterling or KDB are going to start hauling. It's likely to happen at some point but there's a reasonable chance that in any given gameweek they won't. And at the same time the players you're removing - e.g. Son, Kane, Rodriguez, etc. - could haul. They have shown form already this season. So jumping ship is a risk. It isn't a no brainer. How many times have you been burned moving from one good player to another only for the former to deliver and the latter to blank (or at least not haul)?

Not against that. Just talking generally about the danger of short termism re expectations of players like Grealish, zaha etc

With regard to spurs/city, I'm in that boat. Own Kane, own Son, not used a transfer this week yet, seen nothing really from City, Sterling or KdB to be scared of. I'm inclined towards holding this week to see what happens. If City are improved and make good returns then I'm closer pulling that trigger, if they don't or/and spurs assets do well then I'm even more skeptical

This is definitely my position. I have 2 FTs. Holding for now with all the COVID news. Will use one closer to the deadline and carry the other into GW10 and reassess.

Your analysis on Kane and Son is incomplete. An article on here has covered more areas and provides a better picture. Maybe you can't read it because you're not a member. GL

Is Bamford to Watkins worth it or just hold as both will score similar points?

Just hold Bamford. He has the better stats so far and should continue to do well

I'm recently thinking a lot about the variance in the xG statistics. By the variance I mean the fact that, if a team has only 1 shot with 0.5 xG they can only score 1 goal, however if a team has 5 shots with 0.1 xG each, they have 0.5 xG but also a chance to score more than 1 goal, even a tiny chance to score 5. And I was wondering whether we shouldn't also account for it in the various stats, especially for the game statistics (like team A should've won because they had 1.8 xG and team B only 0.6 xG). Having the mean and the deviation we should be able to calculate the probabilities from the distribution (which one though?). Same with individuall players' statistics, maybe adding a 95% range or something would be better? That would also draw us to a conclusion that it's better to have many shots from range that few or one high quality chance which I'm not sure is true. I think I have to make some analysis about it. Thoughts? Is there maybe a study covering that already?

Unsure if previously mentioned, but Yarmalenko is almost certainly out for GW9, barring a string of negative tests.
