France received a morale-boost after battling back to overcome Iceland at home in Sunday’s only friendly, with a couple of their back-four showcasing their attacking potential. Elsewhere, Holland are sweating on the fitness of Joris Mathijsen, Roy Hodgson is pessimistic over Gareth Barry’s chances and Vicente Del Bosque axes a couple of forwards from Spain’s final 23 man squad.

France 3 Iceland 2
Laurent Blanc fielded what many regard as his best available back-four but, despite extending their unbeaten run to 19 games, France were unconvincing in defence against Iceland. With Yohan Cabaye playing as the only holding midfielder, Blanc admitted the hosts failed to find a balance between defence and attack in and went two behind in the first half before a host of changes brought them back into the match. Olivier Giroud – on as a sub for Karim Benzema – provided a pair of assists, while Franck Ribery climbed off the bench to grab an equaliser. Mathieu Debuchy and Adil Rami both bagged a goal apiece from the back, with the former – costing 5.5 in the McDonald’s Fantasy game to Rami’s 6.0, the better value of the duo.

France Starting XI: Mandanda; Debuchy, Mexes, Rami, Evra; Ben Arfa (Giroud 59), Gourcuff (Ribery), Cabaye (Diarra 59), Nasri (Martin 60), Menez (Valbuena 75); Benzema (Malouda 60)

Other News
Roy Hodgson has admitted England are sweating over the fitness of Gareth Barry after the midfielder limped out of the 1-0 win over Norway. Barry lasted just 27 minutes before being replaced by Jordan Henderson in Hodgson’s debut match and could be well be in doubt for the upcoming tournament, according to his manager:

I’m not prepared to say it’s serious. But it is certainly going to dominate our attention and we don’t have a lot of time if the scan shows it is something more than minor.

Vicente Del Bosque announced Spain’s final 23 yesterday. Adrian Lopez missed out despite scoring and assisting in the 2-0 win over Serbia, while Roberto Soldado also failed to survive the chop – it now looks likely to be a fight between the two Fernandos, Torres and Llorente, and Alvaro Negredo for the central striking role. Cesc Fabregas was included in the midfield, though his manager admitted the Barcelona man has a minor injury which is expected to keep him out for 10 days.

Italy are confident that both Ricardo Montolivio and Giorgio Chiellini are winning their respective fitness battles ahead of the opener against Spain on Sunday June 10. The duo featured eight and 10 times respectively over their nation’s qualifying campaign but are both battling to overcome thigh strains – Italian medical staff revealed:

The test results showed improvements for both, even if obviously they are not 100% yet and it’ll take a few more days to see further changes.

Greece boss Fernando Santos received some positive news over Vassilis Torossidis yesterday. The right-back opened the scoring in the 1-1 draw with Slovenia before limping off after just 23 minutes due to pain in his right knee but scans have revealed no damage has been sustained.

Slaven Bilic has admitted he has a couple of injury concerns ahead of naming Croatia’s final 23 man squad on Tuesday. Centre-half Josip Simunic is being rested for a couple of days but is expected to be fit in a couple of days, though the prognosis on Dejan Lovren is “more complex”, according to his manager.

Holland boss Bert Van Marwijk looks to have problems in the heart of his defence. Centre-half Joris Mathijsen was subbed off with a hamstring problem after just 17 minutes of the home defeat by Bulgaria on Saturday and could now miss his side’s opener against Denmark, with the Dutch boss saying:

The first diagnosis is that they think it is not torn. So it could be a strain. Normally that means a recovery period of 10-15 days. We will probably know more in the next week.

There are weaknesses with this England side but if Jones were to play in central midfield that would be the pick of the lot.

It's amazing just how many players have turned their noses up at playing for England; Foster, Robinson, Richards, Carrick. Barry's exclusion plus Johnson injury doubts suggests Richards and Carrick should be there, but instead we face Jags (not a midfielder) and Kelly (not even in the top 5 Eng RBs for me) filling in.

      Just seems a shame.

I was under the impression that Woy had pretty much confirmed Ash as the second striker in Rooney's absence, although I too agree that your selection makes better sense.

I wonder if the Ox might get a run out against the Belgos? Could make a claim for the left wing spot.

Roy is a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 man and I think the starting line-up will be very similar to the one against Norway except Hart, GJ, Terry, Cahill and Cole coming in. The friendly against Belgium will be crucial in knowing what his best line-up will be, GJ and Welbeck especially need to recover from their injuries to show their worth.

sky sports fantasy team- how does that sound?

    Scezney
    Piszczek, Alba, Mathijsen, Kadlec
    Srna, Robben, Silva
    Ronaldo, Huntelaar, Lewandowski

1 captain change per day, so on the first day you can have 2 captains, going with Lewandowski (2 poland defenders also) but is it worth bringing in anyone from the russia/czech match to captain, current plan is to only have kadlec in that match and just captain him, even though he’s a defender

unless theres anyone worth getting in for that game? Who is likely to win that one/best attacking option?

    Thanks

Darnit! I was thinking you could nominate a new captain every single game! Back to the drawing board on that one...

Mathijsen's out injured by the way. And do you really want to double up on SirChez and Pisscheeks?

Also with the wealth of talent available I suspect Silva's gametime might be limited.

You can. Nominate a (c) from GrpA, then shift to player from GrpB overnight, and so on, just once you move the (c), you cannot go back to previously played players.

with sky game you have your 1 captain change from entry day so basically captain a poland/greece player then you can have another for the russia/CR game after, every day after that though you still only get one change, so one cap for the 2 games that day

I guess the point is that teams that are through might rest players for the last group game.

This is both a reason for and against using the wc gw3.

I'm not sure what I want to be honest considering United have actually bid for Kagawa and I really like the look of him, he seems to have his head more screwed on than Hazard too. If United could get both (which I pessimistically doubt) that would be great, but I just want them both to not go to any rival English clubs at least.

It depends if Fergie really is planning to move to a 4-2-3-1 or stick with a 4-4-2/4-4-1-1. In both cases Modric would be a great option IMO. My personal spending spree with United would be a LB cover (targets seem to be at a premium here), a Scholes long-term replacement (Modric) and a playmaker (Kagawa OR Hazard).

More that he's competing for one space out of 3, when you can get Ozil into one out of 5 midfield places.

If you get Muller up front, do you double with Ozil? If you drop Ozil, who to bring in instead?

After a little discussion on him now you soon will do. Although, there was some history of previous Golden Boot winners for Germany and how someone outperformed them next time around.

I, like most people, have decided Ozil is the best attacking German option with so many great options from other nations up-front to benefit from without doubling up on the German attack either.

I'm at Ozil for the moment, and not to keen to double up on Germany just yet.

Considering Muller is classified as a forward, does he compete with Podolski, Gomez and Klose for a spot or is he pretty much nailed on?

The simple answer: Because he's classified as a forward. His stats show that himself and Ozil will rack up similar points but obviously with Ozil as a midfielder, he's a better option.

I wasn't negatively criticising him as you seem to have taken me to be. I was just referring to the fact that the price of Hulk will be unlikely to hinder Abramovich's hand considering he is no stranger to (and why should he be considering his financial situation) breaking the bank.

                  Fair enough!

I don't think any of Torres/Mata/Hazard/Ramires would want bench time next season. So that ends the Hulk story!

And Latin clubs always have release clauses, but no team ever pays them. It's just a negotiation point of reference.

€30m or so will see Bruce Banner hitch-hiking all the way to the Bridge.

Evra is not over-rated when most people can see how poor he's been this season. It's not like he's always been like this, I refer you to two seasons ago (well technically three now) when he was the only mainstay in the United defence and led the line brilliantly.
