Captain Sensible

Who are the best FPL captain options for Blank Gameweek 18?

Fantasy Premier League managers face a difficult choice for the Blank Gameweek 18 captaincy.

Even before Monday’s fixture rearrangements for Spurs, Fulham and Aston Villa, differentiating between Kevin De Bruyne (£11.7m) and Bruno Fernandes (£11.3m) was proving challenging for many.

Now that Harry Kane (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£9.8m) have been handed a favourable home fixture against underprepared opposition the debate has been thrown wide open.

More than ever, Fantasy managers need some help with the armband, which is where the Captain Sensible article comes in.

As always, we will look into the best options’ underlying statistics, comparing them against the defensive data of their upcoming opponents using the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area.

I’ve gone double Arsenal defence since I’d rather have 3 City attackers, Tierney offers attacking output and Leno is only 4.9

I think the Tierney pick is based on some attacking returns too, though definitely overhyped from the WBA game. Leno because Darlow isnt nailed. Those who picked Holding could opt for a Newcastle defender I guess

    Leno
    Cancelo - Tierney - AWB
    KDB - Sterling - Bruno - Son - Saka
    Kane - Wilson

(Steer) (Mitchell - Davis - Douglas)

Any suggestions for my FH side or is it good to lock in? Cheers and good luck!

I like that you're leveraging your high TV.

It's nice. Although I wouldn't have double Arsenal defense. Would rather have Dier or Lloris in there.

Thanks, yeah I did find myself trying hard to fit AWB and Tierney in there for the premium attacking output, but could settle for Dier as Spurs more likely to keep the cleanie

Close, I already own Rashford moving forward so though I’d pick u Sterling for the one off, and Saka good value at that price

      Thx Ragabolly.

PS I like your planner, much nicer than MS Excel before going to sleep 😉 but one minor bug to fix (if you feel like it) is that it needs "add funds" option. It didn't allow me to by a player I did afford. (Easy to handle by choosing another cheaper player from same team now though.)

The issue is that people perhaps don't follow or remember price drops of the players they sold early. Not a big thing, but perhaps more user friendly if there was a possibility to add cash later or simply "ignore cash" button.

Predicting price changes is impossible, but it might also be handy for those who know that their target player later is going to drop in price. Possibility to have negative mitb would also show how big downgrades are needed elsewhere.

But good work and thx! (had been planning an app like this with some extra features myself, but to plan and to do are very different matters)

I have two more trades to make, Forster to Fabianski and Mitchell to Dias/Cancelo.

    Is this bad thinking?

Was thinking a similar thing over. Sheff Utd fans aside, why would you not get Wilson for this fixture. All it takes is a penalty.

It's so easy to be over clever with these things. Even if Wilson doesn't score, you'd have to say it was the right percentage call.

      1. Tsparkes10
        • 5 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

True. But if he blanks (which I think he will) then I get an advantage. I suppose it’s only likely to be 5-7 points and the lows will be lower than the highs if I go without. Generally think we only concede from a set piece though

I've been avoiding Wilson for most of the season because of the Newcastle side, but I can't see a better option around the price unless we hear Pep say Foden will start!

With all the premium attacker and high chance of top 6 clean sheets, you need a cheap bench to afford them all. think its worth the risk as its only 1 week.

    Some FH18 traps to avoid.

    1. Darlow - I think Dubravka is going to start. It's a similar situation to at Arsenal with Leno and Martinez. Dubravka was one of the best keepers in the league last year and won player of the year, he's not just going to lose his place to Darlow. If not this week then eventually. Still not worth the risk anyhow.

    2. Martial - With Liverpool coming up, I can see either a benching in favor of Cavani or managed minutes for Martial. He also hasn't been in the best of form. Not the best pick imo.

    3. Double Arsenal defense - Not a fan. Crystal Palace have scored 22 goals. That's more than Arsenal's 20. They are a pretty decent attacking side and while Tierney is a good pick because of his attacking threat, would not double him up with Leno.

    4. No United defense. United have not conceded a goal at Turf Moor since 2009. They've had 5 consecutive clean sheets over there. It's a pretty safe CS imo only behind City and maybe Spurs. Certainly better than Arsenal.

      2. Do those 2 share roughly equal minutes over the next 3 do you think? Need one as DCL replacement

Two Newcastle defenders to solve 1 but also means not following your 4. Any thoughts?

This is for a sterling draft currently. I tried yours a few pages back and was about 3.0m short haha

Sterling draft is tough unless you have nice TV. Let's see what Pep says. I'm thinking I might not do it anyway though. The sacrifices to go from Rashford > Sterling are pretty steep imo.

          A) Rashford Cancelo AWB Saka
          B) Sterling Dier Lindelof ESR

Yeah a) is actually better across the board except the Rashford v Sterling pick which could go either way.

Means I can probably get a 2nd cheap bench player too (in addition to Mitchell).

See you on here for the presser no doubt

Darlow should be avoided regardless 🙂
      Agree on martial
      Agree on Double arsenal defence
Who would you pick out of:
      Stones or man u defender

Agree with all of these points whole-heartedly. Cannot see Arsenal keep a clean sheet against Zaha. They haven't magically become good after a few wins against West Brom, Brighton and their yearly win against Chelsea

no utd defense worries me but I need to pick either Wilson or Maguire/AWB-- thoughts?

      Lloris
      Cancelo Dias Tierney
      KDB Son Bruno Saka
      Kane Wilson Lacazette

I have Sterling. I looked at the man city blue moon forum. The vibe seems to be it was an 'injury' to give him a rest.

Crucial for me though because if he is out I will only have 6 plus Brewster. Then I will have to decide if a -12 is worth it to get Kane in and finally leave enough cash to dump Brewster the following week.

Otherwise I will leave it be no FH with 7 plus Brewster.

Yeah so 2FT, 2.1 ITB, currently 7 starters.

    Sanchez
    Dias Lewis (KWP Coufal)
    Son Mahrez Fernandes (Bowen Bissouma)
    Kane Martial (DCL)

    A) FH?
    B) Manage with 2FT, can do DCL/KWP to Wilson/Cancelo

He is expected to start, and Bruce needs wins so if it's just a precaution then he should start.

Drop Reece James in the draft? No game in 18 and very unlikely to play both in 19. Plus it's a 8 man league so not like there aren't many good options on the market. Thinking Telles for 18 and Coufal for 19.
