Moving Target

Can Robert Snodgrass’ set pieces turn him into a viable FPL asset for West Brom?

Robert Snodgrass (£5.7m) became Sam Allardyce’s first signing as West Bromwich Albion manager last week, signing on an 18-month deal.

Will he help transform his new team’s fortunes and become a viable Fantasy Premier League asset in the process?

We’ve run the rule over the former Norwich City and Hull man to find out.

The midfielder had been largely frozen out of the team at West Ham this season, making four substitute appearances in the Premier League for a grand total of four minutes.

Snodgrass, 33, had been an important part of the Hammers’ side before struggling with a back disk injury, which kept him out of the second half of last season.

The former Scotland international is expected to go straight into the team at the Hawthorns, giving the Baggies some much needed Premier League experience.

“I’m absolutely delighted he has chosen to take up the challenge with us. He’ll add Premier League experience and quality to our side.”

Sam Allardyce

There’s currently no sign of Fantasy Premier League managers being tempted to bring Snodgrass in ahead of Double Gameweek 19, but should he be considered?

VETERAN

Allardyce made a name for himself at Bolton for taking experienced players thought to be over the hill and bringing out some of the best football of their careers.

The careers of Jay-Jay Okocha, Fernando Hierro and Gary Speed all experienced and Indian Summer thanks to their time at The Reebok.

And Allardyce is clearly hoping to get the same from Snodgrass, comparing him to Premier League legend Speed.

“He might be getting on but in his mind he still thinks he’s 20. Snodgrass runs all day, he’s got great quality and a huge amount of experience. He never gives up. Hopefully that will rub off on some of these players who will look at him and say, ‘My word’. Lifting the spirits and lifting the standards is very important at a professional football club. It’s even more important at a Premier League club.”

Sam Allardyce

Despite Allardyce’s comments, Snodgrass’ FPL returns have not dropped considerably as he has entered his mid 30s.

Last season he delivered a decent 10 goal contributions, scoring five goals and chipping in with five assists.

Despite playing fewer minutes, that was actually an improvement on the season before, suggesting Snodgrass could still have plenty to offer at Premier League level.

SWEET LEFT FOOT

Big Sam was keen to highlight Snodgrass’ left foot and how it would bring balance to his side, hinting at a role down the left hand side of midfield.

“He’s left-footed. We all look for balance. When you get the right balance in the team with left-footed players, they can really produce for you down that left side. I’ve heard from many, many people that he is exceptional in the dressing room which is a great bonus on top of his abilities.”

Sam Allardyce

West Brom’s two most effective attacking players of last season, Matheus Pereira (£5.6m) and Grady Diangana (£5.1m), who are both left footed, have struggled to replicate the form they showed in the Championship.

(Pereira left, Diangana right)

Allardyce even singled out Pereira for criticism, asking for more from the West Brom playmaker.

“It’s very simple. This is the Premier League and he needs to do it (play) quickly – much quicker than he did in the Championship. Then he will show his very skilful qualities. But if he chooses to do it at his pace in the Premier League, then he will not be successful.”

Sam Allardyce

Reading into these quotes, it is telling Allardyce has only started Pereira once in the Premier League since arriving at the Hawthorns.

And he appears to be equally unimpressed with Diangana, hauling him off at half-time in their 4-0 thrashing by Arsenal.

In the case of Snodgrass, it could be that Big Sam is looking for the midfielder to offer a greater balance in the middle of the park, with most of West Brom’s centre midfielders predominantly being right footers.

He would also add some much needed creativity, where other than Conor Gallagher (£5.5m), they are severely lacking.

But with both Pereira and Diangana struggling this season, it could be that Snodgrass finds himself playing out on the left flank.

SET PIECES

Throughout his career, Snodgrass has offered huge threat from set pieces, particularly from corners, as shown in his best 2016/2017 season.

With Allardyce setting up the Baggies in a defensive formation, they will need to make the most of set pieces if they are to pull off a miraculous survival.

Sam Inkersole, who covered West Ham for Football.London during Snodgrass’ spell, outlined the Scot’s quality delivery and what else he could bring to his new team.

“His qualities were obvious. Set piece delivery was impressive and vastly improved from what the Hammers had previously and simply, his work rate. Too many West Ham players that season (when he arrived) were passengers so it was no surprise they struggled.”

Sam Inkersole

Set pieces have already played a big part of the West Brom attack since Allardyce joined.

A towering header from Semi Ajayi (£4.8m) gave the Baggies an unlikely point against champions Liverpool.

And the big centre half netted again in the FA Cup against Blackpool, before they lost on penalties.

With a 6ft 3ins defender who can aggressively attack a ball in the other team’s penalty area, Snodgrass’ quality set piece deliveries may well find their target more often than not.

Should the pair be able to strike up a good understanding, then they could both turn into assets worth having in the second half of the season.

THE PROSPECTS

In a system that will suit his style of play, Robert Snodgrass could well deliver some good FPL returns for his new club.

His assist potential could also be bolstered by a new striker, one Allardyce is actively searching for.

“I am looking for a frontman, hopefully he’ll be coming through the door as quickly as possible. That’ll be from abroad, rather than from this country.”

Sam Allardyce

However, the main issue with bringing him into our teams is his price point.

Still priced up at £5.7m, he finds himself in the same bracket as former teammate Tomas Soucek (£5.3m), who has delivered consistent returns all season, and Raphinha (£5.5m), the dynamic Leeds winger who is starting to deliver goals and assists.

West Brom also face a torrid run of games in the next few weeks.

In their next seven the Baggies will face off against Manchester City, Manchester United, Spurs and Wolves, with returns looking few and far between.

Kinder fixtures against Fulham and Sheffield United in Gameweeks 21 and 22 will give us a realistic idea about what to expect from their attack.

Ultimately, Snodgrass appears to be priced just a bit too highly to be considered for a budget midfielder role.

But those looking for a punt on a differential midfielder, with the Scot currently sitting at 0.1% ownership, could be hugely rewarded when fixtures turn in Gameweek 25.

Do we think Antonio is fit enough to play both games?

Really close to pulling the trigger on this one: Adams -> Antonio

Uncertainty about if villa get a dgw in 19, 20 or later down the line in driving my squad mad.

If they don't have a dgw19, I can remove 2 of my villa for hits for a great bb squad this weekend

But then if a dgw 20 is announced after 19 deadline I'll just have to bring them back for hits!!

    Anyone else like this?

    Not feeling the Antonio love.

Have exact money to do Son & Kane to Salah & Werner for a bit of a differential ( his fixtures are also good afterwards before I swap Kane back in).

Just noticed there's a fair bit of discrepancy between what's on the FPL website for this week, and what's on FFS. (E.g. Cancelo, Foden).

Foden has 2 goals versus XG of 0.7 in the last two (Chelsea, Brighton) but, I would back him to put those two chances away again. How important is the eye test in today's stats-obsessed game?

Ok so the key question is: is there too much covid and fixture related chaos at the moment to play a chip in DGW19?

And the follow up question is, if not, then which chip is best played this week, and why? I.e. are any of the fixtures/form good enough for Bruno/KDB/Salah to be triple captained? Or which players on your bench are worthy of boosting?

As Arsenal are playing during the cast, which cheap gunners to go for?

      Bellerin (5.1)
      Holding (4.5)
      Gabriel (5.0)
      Tierney (5.4)
      Saka (5.3)
      Smith Rowe (4.5)
      Partey (4.9)
      Lacazette (8.3)

And should you save a spot for soon-to-return, Martinelli (4.9)? Could you form a new strategy around 2 or 3 of those bargain midfielders in one FPL squad?

I personally have Tierney, Saka and Smith Rowe, but I'd wish I had a slot to bring Gabriel back again (if he walks straight back into the XI), as well as Bellerin, who I sold due to fears of rotation with Maitland-Niles.

About tinkering Villa players owners, (I'm a Grealish owner), I'm just curious. Are we blinded by the potential DGW?

I mean, in the best scenario, AVL gets a double of NEW and MCI:

    - Grealish is one YC away from a ban that could happen against MCI or against Burnley in 20
    - we have absolutely no idea who got covid and who had fully recovered from it. Of course the likes of Grealish, Watkins can play a double but there's a reasonnable assumption that their overall performance could be affected by either a lack of recovery but also a lack of training.

I don't really like the idea because I really enjoy watchung the player and can't wait to have him onboard again, but to me clearly Grealish is a sell ahead of GW19 no matter what happens with AVL fixtures

For me it's always hard to sell a DGWer for a SGW player. In specific situations it's easy but generally I don't like it for the obvious reason that the potential for a bigger score is (generally) there, but almost as importantly the floor is higher.

Now the equation obviously changes with specific circumstances, and selling a DGWer for another DGWer can make sense - but at this time with so many of us with issues in our teams that doesn't seem ideal.

I think selling Grealish is certainly valid, I just think it takes a pretty good team to be able to prioritize that this week.

        • 9 Years

I get your point. Selling Grealish for me would be part of a scenario where I would get Antonio (DGW) in place of Kane and upgrade Grealish to Salah (DGW) which I think makes sense.

On paper yes, Grealish has a DGW but considering the covid outbreak at villa (so fitness questions) + YC tightrope + a very difficult game at City I think it's fair to consider Grealish rather has 1.5 fixtures this GW

You guys who are still able to put out good bench boost teams this week, I salute you.

No idea how you’ve done it.

I planned pretty hard and I’m sat here with double Villa, double Leeds, double Saints and DCL with no chance of getting out a great starting 11 let alone a bench boost team.

Well, at least change causes opportunity for us more active players of FPL. I prefer the terms 'active' and passive' players, to Casual and then 'us' (who often don't beat the 'Casuals').

I'm not saying it's great, but with two playing keepers, which I don't normally have, and a -4 hit I can put out a strong 11 and a bench which I'm happy playing.

      De Gea, Bamford, Jones, Mitchell.

Bench boost I see as a bit of a red herring chip. Can end up with too nuch money on the bench trying to maximise its use, where in surrounding fixtures money is better spent on the pitch. Happy to get it used and out of the way with. Of course, during COVID times maybe I have to rethink the strength of my bench anyway.

In light of the fixture changes, have your chip plans changed?

Is BB less appealing now, because there are fewer players with DGWs? Is TC less appealing because there will be future DGWs?

I'm looking to play what I know as much as possible, not thinking too much about specific fixtures or specific future GWs.. are you planning to use chips in specific future Gameweeks? How much does the possible DGW26, for example, play into your thinking?

Really feel for those that planned BB. I was always on TC (as couldn't shift Brewster) and will most likely stick to it.

WC in GW25, BB in DGW26 most likely for me

Not planning to use BB now. May use TC chip on Salah or KDB but undecided largely due to the amount of fixture uncertainty generally right now. May switch to WC25, BB26 when things have perhaps settled a little more and just use the TC at some other future DGW.

Having built up to it for a month or so, bb is less appealing. But I'm still planning to play it if possible with 3 Leeds v brighton

It really depends on any villa rearranged games.

If we hear villa have a dgw20 then I guess u don't play bb and simply bench my 3 villa players.

Otherwise current plan is to take a few hits and lose 2 villa for the bench boost.

Should add that I don't see a perfect time to bb this season.

Just having a playing squad of 15 is tough enough.

The wildcard I am later in the season will focus partly on helping me navigate gw29 blank. Not on building a bb squad

This is me. I (like most) had geared up for weeks to have 15 players DGW... which meant taking value from my 11 and onto my bench. If I save my DGW now, it means more weeks of keeping value on my bench.

Don't get me wrong, with fixtures being cancelled left and right, I do want some players who can come in and play - but I can't see a scenario where I gear up to having 15 players who'll play again. Also, any future DGW will be at the same risks of moves/cancellations as this one.

I think I'll be playing my BB.

It really hasn't gone to plan but I agree with your logic. My team has been hindered by spreading funds for a bench boost. May as well play it now with decent single GW players as opposed to fodder.

Absolutely. If we saved it, it's weeks of engineering a side that will have DGW players on the bench, at the cost of points over those weeks, just for it all to be at the risk of changes/cancellations again.

I'm BBing and, quite honestly, this year I'll be glad to be rid of it.

Thinking about TC but there seems to be risks around all the usual suspects

Salah -> poor form and not the best fixtures
KDB -> exhausted by the end of the Brighton match so could be a rotation risk + small possibility of villa postponement
Bruno -> 4 YCs so might only get liverpool

I was on for a beautiful 15 DGWers and a BB, but I think I'll be leaving chips alone now.

Might still make a couple of moves to give me 11 DGWers, but I don't have De Bruyne and not sure on Salah TC.

      I have 11 x DGWers and 4 x SGWers

My SGWers are currently Kane, Son, Lacazette and Smith-Rowe - all with very good fixtures.

Sticking with the BB. I want it done and out of the way, and then I don't have to worry about having money tied up on the bench anymore.

Might use TC this GW, but getting cold feet on KDB. If e.g. rumours on Aston Villa - Newcastle being moved to DGW19 come to a conclusion, I'll take a hit or two and play BB.

I managed to save my FH chip in GW18 as i managed to get 10 players out with a -4 .. and with my team now ravaged for GW19 i think using the FH in GW19 could have a solid upside to get 11 DGWeekers

    12. Alberto Tomba

Having built to BB19 for a few GW, I feel i will probably still have to WC for GW20 to shift value back off my bench. This makes me think i'm not likely to have a better bench to boost later this season (Meslier, Dier, 4.8Mid using 1FT, Bamford), alongside my 11 DGW players.

I expect any change / opportunity to come in later GW to not provide a more fruitful bench, even with 3 of these 4 being single GW players.

50-50 on TC KdB or not now. Got all chips. All my single gameweekers have good fixtures so not arsed on getting in more doublers. People will continue to be obsessed with dgw but time and time again it's proven to be a shot in the dark

Martial could be alright according to reports so thoughts on this team of 10 DGWs and a TC?

    Areola
    Cancelo Stones Coufal
KDB (TC) Bruno Rashford Son Soucek
    Martial Antonio

    Martinez Wilson Holding Mitchell

Could even switch Son (shu) to Wilson (ars, avl) if that DGW for Newcastle gets confirmed.
