Aston Villa have this afternoon confirmed the appointment of Paul Lambert as their new manager. The former Norwich City boss succeeds Alex McLeish in charge at Villa Park after attempting to resign from his position at the East Anglian club earlier this week. It’s reported that Lambert has signed a three-year deal in the Midlands, with a £1 million compensation package heading to Carrow Road.

Lambert steered Norwich to a hugely impressive first season back in the top flight, with a 12th placed finished secured. The Canaries were kept out of the relegation places all season by Lambert, who had previously masterminded the club two successive promotions. That record, together with a string of fine displays last season, cemented his reputation as one of the brightest young managerial talents in the game.

Villa will, understandably, be delighted with the appointment. For Fantasy managers it could also be a positive step and Lambert will be strongly backed to revive a Villa squad awash with “sleeping†talent. The likes of Charles N’Zogbia and Marc Albrighton immediately spring to mind as attacking players who struggled to fulfill their potential under the stewardship of McLeish. There are also names like Gary Gardner and Barry Bannan who, if given opportunities in the right system, could well emerge as sound budget investments in midfield areas.

While Lambert’s record at Norwich would certainly point to an improvement in attacking returns at Villa, Fantasy managers will need to be wary of rotation. At Norwich, Lambert liked to have flexibility in his squad to allow him to shift his systems game to game. While he had out-and-out wingers in Elliot Bennett and Anthony Pilkington, he also liked to employ a more narrow diamond midfield system at times, whilst also using a 4-5-1 with Wes Hoolahan pushed up in support of a lone striker.

It seems likely that we’ll see Lambert adopt a similar approach at Villa. He’ll likely look to mix his formations and personnel and perhaps even the likes of Darren Bent, a proven top flight goalscorer, could find himself subject to rotation. Certainly we saw Grant Holt, a player who had clearly adapted to the Premier League stage, fail to cement a starting role, despite skippering the side and producing some find goalscoring displays.

For Norwich, they now have the summer months to pick up the pieces. They face losing their manager and striker Holt, before they can even begin to consider strengthening for next term. Former defensive stalwarts, Steve Bruce Malky Mackay are the early favourites to take charge. However, like Swansea, there will be concerns that the club faces upheaval and is now vulnerable ahead of the “difficult second seasonâ€: Fantasy managers will be wary.

While the Norwich City stock has clearly hit a sharp decline as a result of today’s news, Villa’s will be on the rise and Fantasy managers will have a keen eye on how Lambert utilises the summer funds made available, whilst monitoring his lineups and tactics in the pre-season.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If Ox does well today do we reckon he might start? Either wide right with Theo benched, wide left with Downing/Milner benched, or behind Carroll/Welbeck with Young wide left? At 6 million he could be the ultimate differential.

Put your players playing first (e.g 8th, 9th, 10th June) on the pitch. If they score rubbish, bring someone off the bench (which consists of those playing later). The same goes for (c) choice.

The usual thoughts. This time on Spain. Getting there 🙂

    THE DEFENCE

Since August 2012, Spain has played 21 games, racking up a total of 8 clean sheets. Many of the lesser teams in this year’s competition have a far more impressive record than that, which suggests that investing in the Spanish backline may not be the best of ideas. Add this to the premium prices involved and we’ve got a really unattractive defence on our hands.

However, because of the famous faces, the expensive Spanish defence has still created a lot of interest. Iker Casillas may cost a whopping 7.0 million, but 12.8% of the game has decided that having the Madrid goalkeeper in their side is a good idea.

Looking at the defenders, Sergio Ramos and Gerard Pique look likely to be the first choice centre-back pairing. With cost prices of 8.0 million and 7.5 million respectively, it’s hard to see why investment in the pair is so ripe. Even the goal threat for the duo on an international level isn’t exceedingly impressive. Between the two, only one goal has been scored over Spain’s last 21 matches, this came from Sergio Ramos in the 6-0 drubbing of Liechtenstein.

The full-back positions are where the value lies in this Spanish defence. Jordi Alba and Alvaro Arbeloa cost 6.5 million and 7.0 million respectively and will probably start against the Italians in Spain’s first game. However, the versatility of Raul Albiol makes him a very interesting prospect. The Real Madrid player can play right-back, centre-back and even holding midfield and has played the last 2 friendlies in full for the side. At 5.5 million, there’s potential here for a great bargain.

    THE ATTACK

The Spanish have scored 53 goals in their last 21 games which makes their attack a very attractive proposition. Add this to the shambolic defending that Italy produced in their friendly last night and we have an offence that looks near-essential.

Arguably the most secure way into the Spanish blitz is through Xavi. The Barcelona playmaker has 2 goals in his last 8 international matches but looks set to rack up a large number of assists due to his position as chief set-play taker. Even at 9.5 million, he’ll be of value if Spain can go on a goal scoring rout at any stage in the tournament.

One of the midfielders being somewhat overlooked in Fantasy Euro 2012 is Xabi Alonso. The main reasons behind this are that he only managed a solitary goal in 36 matches in this season’s La Liga and also because of his deep positioning in the Spanish side. Many have even mentioned that he’ll fail to make Del Bosque’s starting 11. However, having only missed one of Spain’s last 16 matches, the opposite of this is true. With a price tag of 8.0 million and spot-kick duties in his possession, Alonso could prove to be a superb pick. Having scored 4 goals in his last 10 internationals, it’s arguable that he’ll prove to be an even better pick than the likes of Xavi.

Up front, if money is no object, then David Silva is easily the best pick. Unfortunately, at 10.5 million, the problem is that he is indeed classified as a forward. Having scored double the goals of any other player in the squad over Spain’s last 21 games, he could well justify his price tag. However, with many prolific strikers available at a cheaper price, coupled with his poor finish to the domestic season, David Silva is a big risk.

Playing in the same position as Silva, but classified as a midfielder and available for 9.5 million is Andres Iniesta. Guaranteed to be involved in many of the flowing Spanish moves, he has a huge potential for goals which is why 28.8% of managers have already snapped up his services. The problem is that the statistics don’t correspond with his potential. The Barcelona man only scored 2 goals this season and has only managed 3 international goals over the past 21 matches.

Likely to lead the line for Spain is Fernando Llorente. With David Villa out of the tournament, interest in the Bilbao striker looks ripe as he is the most selected Spanish forward in the game. With 17 goals this domestic season and a price tag of 9.0 million, it’s easy to see that he the potential for big things this summer. However, he hasn’t scored an international goal since October 2010.

Another potential reason to avoid Llorente is Fernando Torres. The Chelsea man finished the domestic season in great form and will bring a lot of confidence into the tournament. After grabbing a goal in their most recent friendly too, the manager may well deem Torres to be his number one striker. If this turns out to be the case, Torres could well make a mockery of his 8.5 million price tag.

    IN SUMMARY

    • Clean sheets don’t look overly likely but Casillas, Ramos and Arbeloa are the best nailed-on defensive options.
    • Silva and Iniesta seem to be the best expensive attacking options.
    • Xabi Alonso is the best cheap(ish) attacking option.

cheers. Very good point. Worth dropping Lewandowski/Robben/Benzema/Ibra or the other main forwards for though? Not for me, but after the Italy game I'll probably reconsider

I saw the line-up for England. It's pretty good, much better than Carroll/Downing starting.

Hart; Johnson, Cahill, Terry, Cole; Parker, Milner, Gerrard (c), Oxlade-Chamberlain, Young; Welbeck

Easier games, cheapest defender and better chance of starting.

Yeah I probably will, just don't want to get sucked into Fantasy again too soon.

@Eoin Basically I think Croatia players present the greatest value plus i'd only have the 2 for the Ireland and Italy matches and I fancy Croatia to score in both.
I had Larsson in there briefly but the Scandinavian teams always seem to disappoint on the big stage and also I wouldn't fancy their scoring chances against France or England.

I wouldn't go with both Srna and Mandzukic tbh. I'd definitely change one of them to Larsson/Elm/Kallstrom. Basically, Sweden look good value for goals.

van Persie or Benzema? Price no object. Think Benzema has three easier games in the group stages, so he might be slightly edging it for me. What do you folk think?

Who will start LB for Holland?
Who will start out of Klose/Gomez?
    Huntelaar/RVP?
    Debuchy/Rev?
    Akinfeev/Malafeev?
Kyriakos/Holebas? (I know one plays LB one plays CB but which one is more nailed on)

"Oh dear. This is bad news for Belgium, if it proves to be true.

I am hearing that their captain, Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, has been injured in the warm-up and is unable to play." - BBC

Looks like the game just got significantly easier for England. If Welbeck scores a brace, he will be a great option for us in the auctions and mc-donald's.
