Antonio proving West Ham’s chief FPL threat as Dawson bolsters defensive options

West Ham 1-0 Burnley

  • Goals: Michail Antonio (£6.3m)
  • Assists: Pablo Fornals (£6.1m)
  • Bonus points: Antonio x3, Aaron Cresswell x2 (£5.4m), Fornals x2

YOU’RE SO FINE

Michail Antonio (£6.3m) got West Ham’s part in Double Gameweek 19 off to the best possible start as he scored the only goal of a 1-0 win over Burnley.

The Fantasy Premier League forward was signed by 500,000+ managers in the build-up to the weekend’s action and he made an immediate impact.

The sale of Sebastien Haller (£6.1m) to Ajax had all but implied Antonio was fit and ready to lead the Hammers’ line again and his performance against Burnley certainly suggested that was true.

Not only did the striker find the net nine minutes into his first start since Gameweek 10, but he also lasted 90 minutes for only the third Premier League match in 2020/21.

Provided that can continue, Antonio can go on to become West Ham’s greatest threat for their appealing upcoming schedule, rather than Tomas Soucek (£5.3m) who did not muster an effort on goal on Saturday afternoon.

By contrast, Antonio has registered a shot every 30.2 minutes this season, the best of any Hammers asset ahead of meetings with Crystal Palace (away), Liverpool (home), Aston Villa (away), Fulham (away) and Sheffield United (home) – all after their second Double Gameweek 19 match at home to West Bromwich Albion, of course.

Crucially, as things stand, the direct competition for Antonio’s place amounts to none – until David Moyes can find a new striker.

Ademipo Odubeko was an unused substitute against Burnley but the West Ham manager has been unequivocal in his desire for reinforcements in this area.

“I’d like some pace and someone who can run in behind. Because Micky gives us that just now, and if we don’t have him through injury or have to rest him at any time, we would like that type.” – David Moyes

SCORES ON THE DAWS

West Ham’s defence is also looking ripe for investment ahead of those aforementioned appealing fixtures as they recorded a third successive Premier League clean sheet against Burnley.

That is something the Hammers have not achieved since September 2019, their recent improvements in this area helped by Craig Dawson (£4.5m).

The centre-back is yet to concede a single league goal this season, starting and contributing to a shutout in every match since Gameweek 16 and was also present for a clean sheet in the FA Cup win over Stockport County.

“(Dawson) has played four games and kept four clean sheets. If you’re a centre-half and you come into a team it’s like being a striker and having four games with four goals. He should be really pleased with his performance. He’s had to be patient. We’ve got competition for places like Issa Diop waiting to come in and Aaron Cresswell has played as a third centre-back for us as well. The competition is there. They’re setting the standards now. Sometimes you do have to win 1-0 in these games.” – David Moyes

It would appear that Dawson has nailed down his place in the West Ham back-four now, especially with Issa Diop (£4.3m) an unused substitute against Burnley and Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) self-isolating.

WHUBHA

Whether or not Dawson can offer Fantasy value of his own rather than boosting his colleagues remains to be seen.

The centre-back was a prolific penalty box presence for Watford during Project Restart but is yet to register an effort on goal for West Ham.

Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) and Aaron Cresswell (£5.4m) have nine attacking returns between them this season so they look the more likely to get returns at the other end of the pitch.

That said, the latter was spared an own goal only by the offside flag on Saturday afternoon and the pair combined for just one key pass.

And those without West Ham defensive coverage, especially for upcoming meetings with Crystal Palace (Gameweek 20), Fulham (Gameweek 23) and Sheffield United (Gameweek 24) could do worse than selecting Dawson for his attractive price.

BOTTLE OF CLARET

In failing to find the net against West Ham, Burnley recorded a 10th blank of the campaign, solidifying them as clean sheet fodder.

No team has failed to score in that many games this season as they registered their 28th 1-0 defeat in the Premier League, the Clarets’ most common scoreline in the competition.

That is encouraging news for Fantasy managers targetting their upcoming opponents such as Aston Villa, Chelsea and Manchester City between now and Gameweek 22.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Dawson, Coufal; Rice, Soucek; Fornals, Benrahma (Lanzini 68′), Bowen (Yarmolenko 82′); Antonio.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; Brady, Westwood, Brownhill, Gudmundsson (McNeil 46′); Wood (Rodriguez 72′), Barnes (Vydra 63′).

Baffling the amount of people baffled by people making early transfers.

People have different styles of pay; those moving early know the risks.

Also, what is never mentioned on this site for some reason, there's a large contingent playing the 'money' version of this game, eg most total value wins.

Those people don't care about who is playing who, form etc, simply chasing the rises. They can make as many transfers as they want as well (and they do), as they don't care about points.

And of course, the transfers they make affect the overall transfer system.

It is baffling, none of them ever seem to say anything. Actually, there was one bloke who did an article on it a few years back, this was pre-price prediction websites so it was a massive load of manual work to figure out who was going to rise and fall, He gave it up after he won it.

I don't know if you get a prize but there's a top five on the front page of FPL website so they certainly give it status.

There's the Most Valuable Teams table on the FPL Status page - Some people want their teams in that Top 5 list all season - fair play to them

It's useful as a tracker of what sort of TV my team should be at ... usually 2 to 3m below those teams
It's just a pity that we never know what their SV (Sales Values) are

Anyone eyeballing someone for the next few? I have two city Def (Dias,Cancelo) but no city attack. Man UTD also looking strong in defense. Would be tempted to sideways into Shaw but idk if he's nailed .

Yes I think he’s only just opened his goal account. Difficult to know if he can be consistent. It’s good trying to predict the next big scorer. Maybe someone like Snodgrass or Jota’s back soon. Or Cutrone and Tao could take off.

I really should've pulled the trigger on Shaw GW18, then got spooked by his 4 yellows for this GW. I think I'll get him once that rests. Under 5m defender for a CL level team. And I don't see how he is not nailed, he's played basically every game when fit.

Around the 5m or less DEF, Reece James if he gets his spot back is a watch too. More expensive, Chilwell and Digne.

In the attacking 2/3rds, I'm pretty settled so haven't thought as much but off the top of my head... everyone is getting off Grealish and he'll likely make them pay. DCL when he's back from injury with Digne/Rodriguez feeding him and games-in-hand. Pogba is one of those picks everyone will mock, but it'll either pay huge dividends, or at least you get him now rather than looking to chase the points just as he gets injured/benched again (like Mahrez, Foden - twice, soon to be Antonio).

End of the season, more budget, lots of value tied up...not impossible to have a team like that. Remember Rashford and maybe Sturridge would be dirt cheap then, Antonio and Gomes really cheap etc.

Cancelo is a weird one to me. Yes hes a full back but the role he takes up when he plays is very different to what all the other full backs at City do. He basically plays as an inside forward when City are attacking. While all the other full backs provide width, when Cancelo is on the pitch its the wide midfielder whos providing the width on his side with Cancelo more central.

But yea hes probably starting and first choice, just rested today.

Wouldnt change much about it tbh. I'm still not 100% sold on CHE def but they do have decent fixtures. Great team mate.

Zouma for a Man City all day long.
I'm also just pissed off at his benching this week so I'll be doing an angry transfer out lol
Already got 2 Man City but very soon you won't be able to go without them as their points and ownership rises

    Martinez
    Robbo Chilwell Stones
    Salah KdB Bruno Son
    Bamford Antonio Watkins

    Button, Mitchell, Stephens, Branthwaite

Pretty happy with my team going forward. Can't think anyone I would like to get/change. Stephens could become ESR.

Also not sure, and I hate fudgy misinformation on here (no offence Fdugy), I read that the training ground reopened on Sunday (today) and it was a pretty legit report.

Information does seem minimal, though – nearly three weeks between fixtures and we don't know anything about who was affected.

Johnstone and Meslier two examples of zero information prior to the very day. Medical confidentiality I think

I'm with you on that, I do know that Grealish has been amusing himself by taking the micky out of Leeds regarding the state of their pitch so he appears to been in good spirits 😉

He's maybe OK then. I love him to watch, had to very reluctantly get rid and he makes me nervous!

We know Trezeguet was infected because he tweeted that he was. Grealish posted on Instagram serious training at home apparently.

Good shout, but also they haven't played so long (over 10 days – I think, by time of game) that presumably everyone who is not physically affected will have done their protocol time.

Saying that, none of us knows who feels ill and who is lucky not to feel ill

Are we possibly looking at serious inflation? Salah and KdB are not performing, Vardy has his hip, Auba isn't worth mentioning + Jesus and Kun can also be forgotten atm.

KDB getting 5 returns in his last 5 matches is not performing? What are you on about????

Could have had a few more assists v Palace, I felt Diaz should have buried the chance he got his assist from. He looks the most in form mid at the minute imo.

If we all had 150 million in our fpl budget, we wouldn't have to care about prices. Same thing happens if expensive fpl picks become like Auba, whom we probably wouldn't get even at 5.5.

I would get him at 5.5. He’s off the boil right now but as we’ve seen, he’s world class most of the time.

Well, he has assists correct, but not too many goals from open play this season.

    1. Qaiss
      • 8 Years

Agree but you could argue he may have been a little unlucky in his last 5 weeks. If you brought him in 5 gameweeks ago, you wouldn’t say he’s been underperforming.

Brought him in basically gw 15 (transferred out for Son for one week) and his returns have been pretty similar compared to Dias and Cancelo. Had him earlier this season also and he's been unlucky a lot.

Pulled the trigger early on my transfer and it paid off some bit. Still only on 40 for the GW though... Johnstone reportedly back in training for the second game, Cancelo presumably gets his berth back for his second.. so just waiting on Taylor for Burnley. Had I known Johnstone was out before the deadline I would not have used BB.

Bamford on pens and plays for more attacking team
Plus u know Antonio will break down again with injury
      So I would keep Bamford
