Antonio proving West Ham’s chief FPL threat as Dawson bolsters defensive options

West Ham 1-0 Burnley

  • Goals: Michail Antonio (£6.3m)
  • Assists: Pablo Fornals (£6.1m)
  • Bonus points: Antonio x3, Aaron Cresswell x2 (£5.4m), Fornals x2

YOU’RE SO FINE

Michail Antonio (£6.3m) got West Ham’s part in Double Gameweek 19 off to the best possible start as he scored the only goal of a 1-0 win over Burnley.

The Fantasy Premier League forward was signed by 500,000+ managers in the build-up to the weekend’s action and he made an immediate impact.

The sale of Sebastien Haller (£6.1m) to Ajax had all but implied Antonio was fit and ready to lead the Hammers’ line again and his performance against Burnley certainly suggested that was true.

Not only did the striker find the net nine minutes into his first start since Gameweek 10, but he also lasted 90 minutes for only the third Premier League match in 2020/21.

Provided that can continue, Antonio can go on to become West Ham’s greatest threat for their appealing upcoming schedule, rather than Tomas Soucek (£5.3m) who did not muster an effort on goal on Saturday afternoon.

By contrast, Antonio has registered a shot every 30.2 minutes this season, the best of any Hammers asset ahead of meetings with Crystal Palace (away), Liverpool (home), Aston Villa (away), Fulham (away) and Sheffield United (home) – all after their second Double Gameweek 19 match at home to West Bromwich Albion, of course.

Crucially, as things stand, the direct competition for Antonio’s place amounts to none – until David Moyes can find a new striker.

Ademipo Odubeko was an unused substitute against Burnley but the West Ham manager has been unequivocal in his desire for reinforcements in this area.

“I’d like some pace and someone who can run in behind. Because Micky gives us that just now, and if we don’t have him through injury or have to rest him at any time, we would like that type.” – David Moyes

SCORES ON THE DAWS

West Ham’s defence is also looking ripe for investment ahead of those aforementioned appealing fixtures as they recorded a third successive Premier League clean sheet against Burnley.

That is something the Hammers have not achieved since September 2019, their recent improvements in this area helped by Craig Dawson (£4.5m).

The centre-back is yet to concede a single league goal this season, starting and contributing to a shutout in every match since Gameweek 16 and was also present for a clean sheet in the FA Cup win over Stockport County.

“(Dawson) has played four games and kept four clean sheets. If you’re a centre-half and you come into a team it’s like being a striker and having four games with four goals. He should be really pleased with his performance. He’s had to be patient. We’ve got competition for places like Issa Diop waiting to come in and Aaron Cresswell has played as a third centre-back for us as well. The competition is there. They’re setting the standards now. Sometimes you do have to win 1-0 in these games.” – David Moyes

It would appear that Dawson has nailed down his place in the West Ham back-four now, especially with Issa Diop (£4.3m) an unused substitute against Burnley and Fabian Balbuena (£4.4m) self-isolating.

WHUBHA

Whether or not Dawson can offer Fantasy value of his own rather than boosting his colleagues remains to be seen.

The centre-back was a prolific penalty box presence for Watford during Project Restart but is yet to register an effort on goal for West Ham.

Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) and Aaron Cresswell (£5.4m) have nine attacking returns between them this season so they look the more likely to get returns at the other end of the pitch.

That said, the latter was spared an own goal only by the offside flag on Saturday afternoon and the pair combined for just one key pass.

And those without West Ham defensive coverage, especially for upcoming meetings with Crystal Palace (Gameweek 20), Fulham (Gameweek 23) and Sheffield United (Gameweek 24) could do worse than selecting Dawson for his attractive price.

BOTTLE OF CLARET

In failing to find the net against West Ham, Burnley recorded a 10th blank of the campaign, solidifying them as clean sheet fodder.

No team has failed to score in that many games this season as they registered their 28th 1-0 defeat in the Premier League, the Clarets’ most common scoreline in the competition.

That is encouraging news for Fantasy managers targetting their upcoming opponents such as Aston Villa, Chelsea and Manchester City between now and Gameweek 22.

West Ham United XI (4-2-3-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Ogbonna, Dawson, Coufal; Rice, Soucek; Fornals, Benrahma (Lanzini 68′), Bowen (Yarmolenko 82′); Antonio.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; Brady, Westwood, Brownhill, Gudmundsson (McNeil 46′); Wood (Rodriguez 72′), Barnes (Vydra 63′).

The required point total for top 10k is up to 1201 points. Seems like it could easily rise another 50 points by the end of this GW, which would put it at 1251 points with half of the 38 GWs gone. Double that, and you're at over 2500 points for the end-of-season total.

Are we thinking it will really require that many points to be top 10k?

I'm gone I reckon. Too far.

Saying that, less that halfway through the league season. But think this particular week is going to hit very, very hard and make the gap pretty hard to make up.

Depends where you are, how many chips remaining.
I reckon top 10k still possible if around 500k mark, above that pretty challenging.
Problem is a template has been set, and getting difficult to make ground

Gonna depend on how TC and BB chips finish out the GW. If this ends up being a top week for either of those chips, chasing will be near impossible to get in 10k.

The fact there might be a template set gives people huge scope to catch up by getting on the players teams that will do the best in the second half of the season. Just because dcl and Bamford tore it up first half of the season doesn't mean they will second half and just because martial, Aubaymayang, sterling, mahrez etc have not fired first half that they won't explode in the second half.

I reckon it will, not quite 50% of games played and goals have been down recently. Imagine if Salah stops blanking or KdB finally scores all those expected points. There are people in the top 10k with 4 chips left too.

He was banking clean sheets. His price was amazing for a City player. He then scored in the cup. If that wasn’t enough for you to bring him in I’m not sure what else you need him to do.

Nice one. I ended up doing Charlie Taylor > Stones for -4 then also played Stones then over Dallas. Did not expect to see what we all just saw. Unfortunately (or luckily for me) Stones is owned by 55% of the ML I'm in so I kind of just made minimal ground.

Would have been terrible if I kept Dallas and didn't take the hit but!

Only thing I can offer is Forster to 2nd playing GK...

Covid / injuires playing havoc this season, had Martinez / McCathy since WC in GW3, not regretted the few extra £ since for a rotation option and a playing keeper come what may... Plenty of BB players with Johnson as 2nd keeper this week...

None, held FT... Played FH last week (did OK, not great), already used 1 FT this week for tactical / £ reasons... 59, with 11 to go (Salah C)...

I play the numbers, sensible punts, but nothing crazy... Inside top 100K (just), top of my work ML (also just), a bit drunk (totally!)... ;o)

I think at some point Cancelo has to convert his attacking potential, you'll be ok.

The mistake is if you went Dias over Stones in the last 3-4GWs IMO. Earlier you could argue Stones was a selection risk, but more recently Dias is 0.8 more for the same output (even before Stones goals).

I'm keen to bring DCL back in once he's 100%, but hard to hold a player of his value if he's not playing.

Son/Kane owners (I own both but on free hit this week)
Fixtures over the next 6 weeks: LIV bri CHE WBA mci whu
            A) Keep both
            B) Son > Rashford for SHU (own fernandes and martial)
            C) Both out for Sterling/Antonio (-4)

Keep both. Consistent returns, both capable of hauling and relatively cheap (I got Son at 8.9m and Kane at 10.6m). Also they assist each other a lot. Value wise they are considerably better than either KDB or Salah. I can afford to keep both, plus Bruno and either KDB or Salah. And have a good, balanced squad with three playing subs. I won't be losing either of them unless form tails off badly.

May go Kane -> Vardy in GW21 for the Leeds fixture. Or get Ings in GW23 if they get a double of Newcastle and Leeds. Considering Son to Rashford but the latter simply hasn't shown enough for me to justify removing a player like Son for.

Kane over KDB for sure. Kane is and probably will remain the highest fpl scorer this season. KDB shooting is just below average. I am sure he can do better but he has had plenty of chances and I don't think that is going to change too much. Plus if both Jesus and Aguero are fit he might play less advanced anyway. Next few fixtures are better for city though, but I personally wouldn't back KDB. City still aren't quite free flowing. 3 out of 4 goals against crystal palace were from dead ball situations. Not that spurs are free flowing as well, but if they do score Kane is very likely to be involved.

I am pretty surprised looking at the elite manager ownership stats. So few own Kane (less than 20%). Find that really surprising. To me he feels like a season keeper and it will be close call between him and Bruno for the best value premium (>10m) asset

Has Everton defense improved with Digne's arrival? Looking at bringing Vardy in until WC 24. He has eve LEE ful wol till then.

Def is looking good now, the problem is the pivot with Allan and Duocuore out. That said, we usually don't concede more than 1 goal and lately have been getting some CSs...finally.

If Emile Smith Rowe starts tomorrow, is it time to consider him nailed? I don't follow the Gunners closely and would love to hear from a wiser head than mine with respect to the young man's potential to continue to get meaningful minutes.

            Thoughts on a 433?

Can have a pretty premium defence, the big 3 in midfield, Kane up top along with 2 of Bamford, Watkins, Antonio. Mitchell, ESR and a 4.5 fodder to complete the team.

My team value isnt even that high and I can afford that, it looks very tasty

343 or 352 historically yields the most points, but you should play the game however you want!

Interesting. I like how 4ATB enables a much better bench in your case

Should be clearer by then if a) António staying fit, b) Salah just having a blip, c) Villa going to use their games in hand d) is Barnes outsxoring Soucek, e) can one really do without either Son or Kane.

                  fair
re Salah, its a combination of poor form for him and the team
with fab and hendo in defence theres far less pressing from the midfield and not the regular service. It's a blip just depends how it continues

The wildcard will be our biggest remaining decision of the season, as we won't have any left after that! At least a bit of time to plan it - good luck!
