Can FPL managers trust Crystal Palace defenders with appealing fixtures?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have long been able to turn to Crystal Palace’s defensive assets for cheap returns.

The Eagles, marshalled by veteran Roy Hodgson, have hit double-figures for clean sheets in the last two seasons, and also carried set piece potential.

But this season, the well appeared to have run dry, with Palace only recording three clean sheets thus far.

More worryingly, the Selhurst Park outfit were also on the end of two Christmas stuffings, losing 7-0 to Liverpool and being outplayed by 10 men in their 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

But since the Villa defeat, Palace’s defence has shown signs of recovery, with encouraging performances against Leicester and Arsenal.

We are taking a deep dive into the stats to see if Palace can once again be relied upon for cheap defensive returns.

    A) Coufal --> Stones
    B) Chilwell --> Stones

Seen lots having that issue. I'd update or delete & redownload the app as a first port of call.

If that still doesn't work, I'd just stop using the app. It has historically been very buggy. The mobile website version of the game is just as good if not better.

Been playing around with some heavy hitter drafts.

    Thoughts on this:

    Martinez Johnstone
    Stones Shaw Coufal Dallas Mitchell
    Salah KdB Fernandes Son ESR
    Kane Antonio Davis

I have exact cash for something like this. If I get priced out I can always do Johnstone > 4.0m and delay the BB until later.

Put my high team value to use here. All 5 big hitters!

Certainly won't be struggling for a captaincy option for the rest of the season! ESR, Mitchell and Stones can really enable a decent team.

Looks great. I have something similar but with Soucek for ESR, Dias for Shaw but Douglas and Steer for Dallas and Johnstone. If ESR continues as he is then I'll likely get him in for Soucek and upgrade the bench like yours. Are you already setting up the Team for DGW26 and saving WC?

Of course it looks good. Is it wildcarding to get to it? My concern would be any future bench boost may be difficult (with Davis in particular). Unless you sacrifice a full bench boost to maximise points in other weeks, which obviously is an option (a better option).

The other problem is that players like Mitchell and SR can flip flop between being nailed and out of the first team very easily, with very few other options.

It's pretty awesome to be fair. But, I would definitely lose Kane or Son and just make a couple of changes (second City Dfer in for Dallas & Son > Grealish for all his future doubles - ESR I'm not sure about, but it's not a biggie, you can even play 4-4-2 some weeks)

Actually, the whole point is that I want Kane + Son in GW21 or 23. The fixtures start swinging to benefit Spurs and they'll have the best DGW 26.

      https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/3997355/history

Using the team planner and a WC I could get:

      Martinez
      Stones Cancelo Shaw
      Salah KDB Fernandes Son Grealish
      Kane Antonio

      Forster Mitchell Brewster Kilman

Power 5 mid and Kane - pretty nice!

Yeah that's pretty nuts. I wish I could have that defense... Yeah that team I think if you set and forget it with KdB or Fernandes as (c) would finish in the top 50K if you started in the top 1M. It might even make top 10K. It has everything.

I'm looking at moving to something very similar over the next couple of weeks actually, maybe with a hit or two to make the most of it until WC25:

      Martinez | Steer
      Stones | Chilwell* | Bednarek | Coufal | Alioski*
      KDB | Salah | Son | Bruno | Soucek*
      Antonio | Bamford* | Brewster

      Chilwell > Shaw
      Soucek > Gundogan
      Alioski > Mitchell
      Bamford > Kane

      Leaves 0.6itb for a 2nd BB keeper.

I've been playing 352 all season and it's worked for me, as long as the 2 sub defenders are good.

Depends a lot on your current team and structure

All mentioned defenders are decent but would only bring them in if your current defense is not that great

      Same goes for attackers
James or DCL only if some sign of form in their next match
      Don't fancy Mount that much
      Maddison/Vardy from Leicester

Ben Crellin suggests there is a 50% chance that at least 1 team doubles in GW26 and also plays their BGW29 fixture. That would make WC25, BB26 much better for those without a free hit.

If even 2 teams double in 26 and play in 29 then you can get 6 players who play in BGW29 on WC25 and then use the next 3 transfers from 26-29 to get out at least 9 players for BGW29.

    1. Flair
      • 3 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

I'm considering not wildcarding before and just building a team for the BB26. Already have triple City and Spurs so it doesn't sound as necessary, can then WC afterwards and keep my cash on the field - useful in such a premium focused environment.

A team doubling in 26 and playing in 29 would be brilliant though.

Every man and his dog has triple MCI next week, (if not yet) and since Spurs have their fixture change coming, Kane and Son will be transferred even more in soon.

I've considered that too, but having an entire perfect squad to BB in 26 is very tempting. Without a wildcard you'd have some less than ideal bench players. As DGW26 is going to be so big, I really feel I need to attack it and so WC is the best opportunity. I can traverse the dangerous waters of BGW29 when they come, especially given there may only even be 4 fixtures. Not much room to lose ground.

    Bit of a different question....

What is the equation needed to work out points per million ?
say one player is 5 million and scores 50 points over a season and one is 10 million and scores 100 points, I can see that they are both scoring the same points per million. If one player is 6.3 m and gets 79 points and one is 9.6m and gets 105 points then I don't know how to work it out...

Ty to anyone who can answer

    1. Xna
      • 8 Years

Points per million = points divided by price.
      (rounded to 0.1 decimal place)

        • 8 Years
        3 years, 2 months ago

        79/6.3 = 12.5 105/9.6 = 10.9 your example

Points per million can also be written as points/million. So you just divide the points with the price. I.e 79pts / 6.3m = 12.5ppm

    3. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 2 months ago

You might want to take away the baseline price for that position first to calculate the points per EXTRA million. You might also want to look at points per game for this season or over multiple seasons, or anoher stat like expected goals, for example.

      E.g.

      Cheapest GK is 4.0m
      Martinez is 5.1m
So he is 1.1m more than the baseline.

How much does that 1.1m get you?

      4.4 points per match
      divided by 1.1
= 4.0 points per extra million per game

You might also want to take away the appearance points, and assume these as given. This'll give you points on/over appearance per extra million per game.

Or you might want to choose a baseline from the cheapest alternative, like one who is nailed, getting at least 2 points per game, rather than on getting 0.

These are all things you might want to do, with their own pros, cons and skews.

On form I'm not sure he even starts.

It's working for him now though. I thought their defence was poor, too reliant on keep ball, but they've been decent and at times doing some proper defending. Even without Aguero, without Dé Bruyne hitting the meteoric heights he can reach, they're getting results. I stuck in Ederson on FH18 cos I feared rotation. But considering Stones now for Zouma, looks the best option for him.

In your dreams after Pep's comments 🙂 He has fought hard to get his place and it's now his to lose. Naturally if he makes two major errors leading to a goal, it's a different story. But after playing like that and brace 😉

Sounds to me like a bitter non-owner.

No chance he loses his spot until he makes mistakes. Doesnt mean he will start every single game but as long as he keep playing the way he has been, he will remain the 2nd choice CB behind Dias, and ahead of Laporte.

    Is Werner really so bad?

    Any opinions?

    1. Fit_to_drop

I think he is finding the premier league to have tougher defenders than what he came up against in Germany.

He had an open goal chance at the end of the last game and he executed it really badly. Showing that he was really low on confidence. It is not automatic, having spent so much money on him, that he will succeed at Chelsea. He may leave if he doesnt start scoring regularly. It has happened many other strikers in the past at different clubs.

Not a good FPL pick right now. I like that he doesn't hide in games, keeps trying when other players throw their dollies out of the pram after missing loads of chances. His hard work will pay off, if he's let. For now though Giroud and Lampard, more used to English football, are better strikers.

Werner certainly looks bad. No composure in front of goal, no physical presence. Gets in behind due to his pace and then finishes horribly.

With Pulisic on the left, and Ziyech on the right, I struggle to see how Werner gets in the side.

I would bench Adams from this list, he seems to provide little returns. I also owned him for a long period, but he could never really convince me.

I know it is a popular opinion to always play forwards, but if Ings doesn't play, it always seems more difficult for SOU to score goals.

All your other players have a decent chance for returns I think, so you will have to be a bit lucky too. Maybe A or B?
