Raphinha brings in double digit haul as Bamford blanks again

NEWCASTLE 1-2 LEEDS

  • Goals: Miguel Almiron (£5.6m) | Raphinha (£5.4m), Jack Harrison (£5.4m)
  • Assists: Callum Wilson (£6.6m) | Rodrigo Moreno (£5.7m), Raphinha
  • Bonus Points: Raphinha x3, Almiron x2, Harrison x1

A star turn by Raphinha (£5.4m) earned Leeds a first win since Gameweek 16 as Patrick Bamford (£6.7m) blanked and was subbed off after 59 minutes for an inglorious one-pointer.

In Fantasy terms, it was all about how the 50.1% owned Bamford would get on against a defence with just the one clean sheet since Gameweek 10, with a decent level of interest in Stuart Dallas (£4.8m and 14.1%) and Callum Wilson (£6.6m and 18.8%) to add some spice.

Rapha the Gaffa

There was no suggestion that Bamford was taken off with an injury issue.

In the end, he simply had a poor match and was easily upstaged by midfielder Raphinha, who scored his second goal in four Gameweeks to make it five attacking contributions from his last six starts.

And he wasn’t finished there either, setting up Jack Harrison’s (£5.4m) winner just four minutes after Newcastle had levelled through Miguel Almiron (£5.6m).

Leeds’ schedule doesn’t exactly scream investment. Once a weekend trip to Leicester is out of the way, they’ll host Everton, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa and travel to Arsenal, Wolves and West Ham.

What it doesn’t do is scream sales either, although Bamford is surely on borrowed time for many as he’s scored just once since Gameweek 13.

But if any Leeds player is going to break into a few FPL squads, it could be Raphinha, who now has three goals and as many assists from a season in which he only started his first match in Gameweek 10.

MIDDLE MEN

Harrison remains the side’s highest point-scoring midfielder In FPL, with 76, and he made it two goals in four matches with the winner at St James’ Park.

More interest surrounded Dallas, however, as the defender was again handed a place in midfield by coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Dallas, with three goals and two assists, remains the team’s most potent defender, but his attacking threat is not necessarily enhanced by a place in midfield.

And while his points from six clean sheets are always welcome, only two teams have conceded more goals than the 35 let in by Leeds.

Dallas appeared to be limping at times in the second half, not that Bielsa seemed concerned post-match.

“I couldn’t tell you how he is at the moment because I haven’t been informed of anything just yet.”

Marcelo Bielsa

The coach was more worried about centre-half Diego Llorente (£4.4m), who lasted just nine minutes of his first league start for the club before succumbing to a hamstring problem.

“He has a similar problem to the one as before. It’s a problem for him, us, all of us. In this moment, Diego’s state of mind worries me because of the succession of injures.”

Marcelo Bielsa

BRUCEY NO BONUS

Bielsa’s Newcastle counterpart, Steve Bruce, rolled the dice after the break, bringing on Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.1m) and unshackling a side that had been set up to negate Leeds’ attacking threat rather than exploit the visitors’ defensive weaknesses.

It worked, in terms of stats if not the result, as Bruce acknowledged.

“We had 20-odd shots, we hit the bar and we were unfortunate we didn’t score more. That’s the best we’ve played in weeks. It was good to see the forward players on the pitch to make that possible for us, what a difference if we keep Ryan Fraser right – and Miguel Almiron – then we know we are going to be that threat.”

Steve Bruce

It’s going to take more than words to convince Fantasy managers to go near Newcastle assets at present.

And the one Magpies player with significant FPL ownership – Wilson – has now blanked for six straight Gameweeks.

Newcastle (5-4-1): Darlow; Murphy (Saint-Maximin 64), Hayden, Schar, Lascelles, Lewis; Shelvey, Hendrick, Almiron, Fraser (Gayle77); Wilson.

Leeds (4-5-1) : Meslier; Allioski (Klich 56), Cooper, Llorente (Struijk 10), Ayling; Phillips, Dallas, Raphinha, Rodrigo, Harrison; Bamford (Roberts 60).

Not sure how Chris Wood always escapes a transfer out in my team. He’s the biggest pile of sh*te I’ve owned all season, but now Bamford is making an excuse to leave my team... it never ends

I had a similar issue with Podence earlier in the season.

Be warned, sods law dictates that the week when you finally get rid will be the week when Wood comes roaring into form by the way!

Want both Kane and DCL (already have Son), who to bring first GW21?

      Kane in first.

I can see why people would want to jump on DCL after he did so well earlier in the season. But I'd personally want to see Everton and DCL come back to form before hitting that transfer button.

You'd have to watch how newcastle and leeds defended yesterday to realize why dcl would be such a good buy.

How many did Bamford score? How many did Wilson get?

Just because a striker is playing a team with poor DF, doesn't automatically mean they will score goals.
It's about individual form too and how Everton set up etc...

Like I said, I'd rather be a little late to the party than be the first person there looking like a prize tit

The fact is those 2 teams will ship goals. The strikers getting nothing doesn't even mean anything I don't get your reasoning. Everton are a much stronger attacking unit than those 2 teams as well.

I don't see how you don't understand my point!?

You said that I just need to see how Leeds and Newscastle defended to see why DCL is such a good buy.

I pointed out that neither striker scored in that game last night, so your point wasn't as good as you perhaps thought it was...

You're using newcastle attack to judge a team's defence? They have one of the worst attacks in the league and yet they could so easily craft past Leeds defence yesterday. And Leeds attack isn't even based on Bamford alone, they have loads of areas to score from. Guess you didn't even watch the game then.

I watched a lot of the game.

You are very much mis-representing what I said. I was just turning YOUR argument on it's head.

My argument was that I'd rather wait for DCL/Everton to hit form before pulkling the trigger.

You were trying to argue that because Leeds/Newcastle have poor a Df then DCL is a great pick. I refuted that point with the Bam/Wilson not scoring argument.

And, what you said about Leeds attack not just being about Bamford - well, is that not the same for Everon?

                  1. ivantys
                    • 3 Years
                    3 years, 2 months ago

Your refute is basically saying strikers NEED to score goals before a defence can be listed as bad. Have to say Leeds were woeful yesterday, Newcastle with such a crap attack were still able to create so many chances against them, and just because Wilson doesn't score, it meant Leeds defence are good right? And everton's goals not mainly come from dcl, well if they win like 3-0 and dcl blanks then it's just not your day but with them at full strength now, it's always worth going for.

I seriously question your comprehension skills.

Pointless continuing as all kind of words being put in my mouth here.

You make pointless refute that those 2 strikers blanking meant their defences weren't bad. With that logic, every team who faced city don't have bad defences since Jesus never scores right?

    McCarthy
    Dias - Dawson - Targett - Mitchell - Dunne
    Salah - Bruno - Son - Grealish - Soucek
    Kane - DCL - Bamford

    (a) Gundogan/Barnes/Zaha + 4.5m in for Bamford + Soucek

That choice is kind of hard:
Bamford has a double coming up, and I'll loose 0.3m if I sell him. Also he's due a goal.

It's only really Man City, Spurs and Leicester and possibly Liverpool who stand out then.

And with the risk of rotation I wouldn't go mad over planning on the dgw again.

I'd rethink if those are your options - Soucek is a very useful player to own - yes you won't always get his hauls but he is cheap enough to bench.

But if you're heart is set on Maddi then Soucek is the only way

Fascinated to see how Chelsea line up and perform

If the signs look good for a new manager bounce then the fixtures are enticing and bar Chilwell and Zouma they're all completely differential. Tammy up front allowing Werner to play off him could be intriguing.

Great article on the Athletic today saying that the full backs will be used very attacking, although he seems to rotate them allot due to the work rate they provide. Sounds like Werner could well be a good option too...will have to wait and see. Seems like he rotates a lot though.

Ah - was wondering about rotation - it's a deep squad after all.

    Rashford & Dallas -> Cancelo & Son (-8)

    Needs a downgrade

    1) Werner -> DCL
    2) Bamford -> B D-Reid

And is it worth it (btw, the total cost of the 3 transfers would be -8)

Afternoon all. Early thoughts on what to do here? Multiple price changes last night are v frustrating but can’t be making moves before the rest of the games play out!

    2FT 0itb
    Martinez, Johnstone
    Robbo, Dias, Stones, Coufal, Dallas
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Soucek, Raphinha
    Vardy*, Bamford, Antonio

    A) Vardy, Robbo > Kane, Cancelo (2FT) - MCI def triple up (!)
    B) Vardy, Raphinha > Werner, Gundogan (2FT) - no Kane, punt on Tuchel turning CHE around!
    C) Vardy, Raphinha, Robbo > Kane, Gundo, Maguire/ Shaw/ Justin (-4)
    D) Vardy, Bamford, Raphinha, Robbo > Kane, DCL, Gundo, Mitchell (-8)
    E) Vardy, Raphinha, Robbo, Stones > Kane, Gundo, Cancelo, Shaw (-8)
    F) Vardy, Bamford, Raphinha, Robbo > Kane, Gundo, Digne, Rodrigo (-8)

Sorry prob too many options - lots of ways this could go!

    Cheers!

He looked great but if I want Gundo then he is the easiest route. Soucek is someone I would feel more comfortable about benching when needed - slightly less headache than Raph

        It's a tough one!

To be honest I read far more suggestions to get Gundo than Foden. I went for Sterling instead of Salah, as it's easier to get Salah back in the side, if Liverpool's form improves. Playing a 343 with a really cheap fifth midfielder, it's difficult to get all the flavour of the week mid-priced mids in.

    2. DARK SIDE OF THE LOON

One of the factors has been Hendo and his influence from the midfield. With him operating as a CB, there seems to be a vacuum in that midfield with the front 3 needing to either drop deep to get the ball or be continuously frustrated when they stay up top. Hendo back should help them score more.

    3. Don Kloppeone
      • 6 Years

Having Hendo back in the middle will help hugely. It is a major step on the way to us getting our full mojo back. VVD is the ultimate enabling key though
