Four fixtures postponed in GW32 – but no Blank Gameweek expected

Four Premier League matches that were scheduled to take place in Gameweek 32 were today officially postponed due to the clash with the FA Cup semi-finals on the same weekend.

The fixtures are:

Aston Villa v Manchester City
Chelsea v Brighton and Hove Albion
Leicester City v West Bromwich Albion
Southampton v Crystal Palace

There doesn’t seem to be any danger of there being a Blank Gameweek, however – a free midweek that follows Gameweek 32 is simply expected to accommodate those postponed matches.

Only the fixtures up to Gameweek 31 have so far been chosen for television broadcast, hence the likely reason for a delay in new dates being set.

Two other Premier League games that had previously been called off – Aston Villa v Everton and Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton – also remain outstanding.

FA CUP QUARTER-FINAL SCOUT NOTES

Another game, another Ilkay Gundogan (£6.1m) goal from in or around the opposition six-yard box.

The German popped up to put Manchester City in front after 84 minutes of Saturday’s 2-0 win over Everton, reacting in now trademark opportunistic fashion to nod in the rebound after a marauding Aymeric Laporte (£6.0m) had struck the hosts’ crossbar.

Reassuringly deployed as a more adventurous ‘number eight’ rather than further back in the double-pivot (as was the case in the match against Southampton in Gameweek 27), Gundogan did pop up in some threatening positions on Merseyside – although his goal was his only attempt of the match.

Wingers Phil Foden (£6.1m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.4m) dominated the shot count as Pep Guardiola’s latest round of rotation saw Joao Cancelo (£6.1m), John Stones (£5.3m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.1m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) drop to the bench.

The Belgian emerged as a late substitute to double City’s lead, racing clear to put the tie to bed.

Everton saw little of the ball but arguably had the better chances, with the Toffees a threat from set plays and Richarlison (£8.0m) again seeing more opportunities than strike partner Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.6m).

Budget FPL goalkeeper Joao Virginia (£4.3m) was between the posts but Carlo Ancelotti expects both Robin Olsen (£4.5m) and Jordan Pickford (£4.8m), as well as winger James Rodriguez (£7.7m), to be fit after the international break.

Kelechi Iheanacho‘s (£5.7m) blistering form continued as he scored a brace in Leicester City’s 3-1 win over Manchester United.

The Nigerian showed predatory instincts to pounce on a Fred (£5.3m) error to break the deadlock before rounding off the scoring when nodding in a Marc Albrighton (£5.2m) free-kick.

Iheanacho also claimed the assist for Youri Tielemans‘ (£6.5m) effort and would have had another to his name had strike partner Jamie Vardy (£10.1m), who has scored just once in 2021, not spurned a one-on-one chance in the second half.

Brendan Rodgers said of his in-form forward, who now has nine goals in as many games:

You see his confidence now. He’s at the top of his game. It’s a different structure [up front]. Kelechi is probably best with someone up there with him. Those two are working very well.

James Maddison‘s (£7.1m) impending return needn’t be a worry for Iheanacho’s owners in FPL, as it’ll very likely be Ayoze Perez (£6.0m) making way in ‘the hole’ if Rodgers sticks with a 3-4-1-2.

How Harvey Barnes (£6.7m) is incorporated back into the side is another question, although the young winger is a little way off a comeback.

Anthony Martial (£8.6m) and Edinson Cavani (£7.8m) both returned from injury for the visitors but Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) missed out; Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saying after full-time that the striker will “maybe” be fit for England duty despite scans showing an injury.

Mason Greenwood (£7.0m) scored United’s solitary goal, with Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.2m) among the players rested for Sunday’s encounter and only thrown on in the final half an hour with the Red Devils chasing the match.

Chelsea made it seven clean sheets in their last seven games with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United; only once before in the club’s history have they managed a longer run of consecutive shut-outs.

Investment in the Blues’ in-form backline is hugely tempting ahead of Gameweek 30 but Thomas Tuchel keeps us guessing as to what his defence will look like on a week-on-week basis, with Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.8m) finally getting a breather and forgotten man Emerson Palmieri (£4.7m) drafted into the back three – although how much can be read into an FA Cup line-up is another question.

Sheffield United ought to have spoiled that clean sheet record, with David McGoldrick (£5.2m) missing the most glaring of the Blades’ chances, and Tuchel cited tiredness as a reason why the hosts looked atypically porous at the back:

After 14 consecutive matches, I could feel we were tired and we made many little faults. We were lucky to keep the clean sheet in the second half but I think it’s the first time in the 14 games we have looked tired. It’s important to go through in the cup and that was the target and we reached it.

Ben Chilwell (£5.8m) claimed the assists for both Oliver Norwood‘s (£4.5m) own-goal and Hakim Ziyech‘s (£7.9m) late clincher.

There was positive news for owners of Edouard Mendy (£5.1m), meanwhile, with Tuchel confirming after full-time that the goalkeeper wasn’t going away to represent Senegal over the international break in order to have dental surgery.

Southampton put their woeful league form to one side as they cruised past Championship side Bournemouth and into the last four.

Nathan Redmond (£6.4m) was again deployed ‘out of position’ alongside Che Adams (£5.8m) up front and played a starring role, scoring twice and setting up Moussa Djenepo‘s (£5.4m) opener with a slide-rule pass.

Danny Ings (£8.4m) is expected to be available after the international break, however, to muddy the waters in the Saints’ attack.

Fraser Forster (£4.0m) was, for the fourth time in five matches in all competitions, once again preferred to Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) between the posts.

It's interesting that people are having problems fitting in Jota, Gundo, Lindgard, Raff, Barnes, Bam, etc. etc. in there teams due to having too much money...

Due to traditionally having to have 3 or 4 'elites' in your squad, there's no room for all these at once.

This could be a season where the more ITB you have, the better your team is...

It’s funny though, even though you pick your best team with all these players and see how much you have left, you have an uneasy feeling and then go about transferring in Salah just cos you can afford him despite his complete lack of form!!

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

The season's standout feature has probably been the spread of scoring - nearly all big hitters underperforming (still only 1 player over 200 points at this stage - and even that player started the season below 11.0) & what feels like abnormally high quantities of mid-price/bargain players all scoring abnormally highly & consistently (The aforementioned Gundo, Lingard, Raph, BamBam etc)

So as a result a higher than normal amount of teams seem to be having 6,7,8 players doing well each week rather than the normal 2,3, or 4 which in turn seems to have led to what feels like the highest scoring season I personally can remember on pure average points per week (surely 2,450 points won't even look at a top 10k this season - in recent seasons 2,300 would probably have been enough)

Basically money has became a bit of an irrelevance to your original point... Salah scoring 75 points in his last 8 games would possibly redress that balance a bit - but again every man & his dog will have him at the first hint of a double return anyways so certainly does look like being the highest scoring season ever on record

I brought in auba for Bruno the Burnley/city game week even though I knew arsenal had better cheaper options and I’d end up wanting Bruno back. I definitely fell into the player-price trap.

With a lot of us having money ITB it is a luxury we can afford, Liverpool's form seems to be (very) slowly turning around, and he is a big differential. Plus being dropped by England may light a fire under him.

I've held FH for 33 but if Spurs vs Southampton gets added in there it will be a real kick in the teeth. PlanetFPL pod seems to think there's a good chance now Spurs are out of Europe.

No really kick in teeth, always weeks where u just look at your team and wished u had a Wc or FH that week

I have TC still maybe DCL now lol

Since you can get a strong 15 on FH, especialy this year, I dont think rotation will be an issue.

Only problem is their arent many good fixtures in that week.

Bit hindsight now of course but I do wonder if I should have just used it in GW29 - maybe a bit of overthinking.

Most people will be in same boat with doubles and will pile on anyway.

Anyone got a clue on what the notional Arsenal number 1 attacking line up is? If Saka is fit is there a likely formation where both Auba and Laca play?

Until last week Auba Laca felt slightly either or. Don't think they'd both started since early January or so.

        Okay - ty

Wasn't sure which flank Saka was on. Had been wondering if Auba had been switched wide because there was a hole that needed filling and that Laca merely got the centre spot because he was less versatile. It's not as if Auba was failing down the centre.

That will be the front four in 1 out of 10 games.

Laca is ahead of Auba at the moment, Auba minutes more likely to be curbed by Willian/Pepe/Martinelli

        Ty

The goals will help of course but presumably Auba was down for the NLD. You might well be right that Laca is ahead now but perhaps that makes him less likely for the prem and more likely for EL?

Feels like an avoid for both to me. Shame as GW31 is such a prime fixture. Could still be worth a gamble I guess.

Yep that's crossed my mind. I've also been looking at Mahrez. He's having another of those really rather good seasons when he's on the pitch.

Laca and Auba will not play together. It was only against West Ham because of the way they set up. In fact I predicted that before the game:

      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/03/19/fpl-injury-and-team-news-updates-ahead-of-blank-gameweek-29/?hc_page=16&hc_sort_by=comment_date#hc_comment_23615851

Auba and Laca will rotate. Pepe, ESR, Willian and Saka will rotate.

The only player certain to play every game is Leno. Odegaard and Partey have a decent chance too.

        Ty mate

That was sort of my thinking just looking at appearances so far - just wasn't quite clear how far Auba's disappearance a few weeks back affected things. Shame really as that puts both Auba and Laca out of the equation for me.

Do you rate Odegaard as an FPL option? Saka is definitely in the equation for me but I sense that Arteta might protect his minutes given injury and youth.

I would not recommend any Arsenal attacker. Saka probably, but only if you have a good back up on the bench. Odegaard is at an uncomfortable price point. Plus he will mostly assist the assister. Will have sporadic attacking returns but not dependable.

            Ty again

Price in the 8.5 and under bracket is fairly notional to me and I expect to have good bench cover here on in. Provided it's not premium or near premium prices benchings don't concern me too much.

I intend to have a strong defence and the Leeds attackers also feel perfectly adequate there despite shortish run of poor fixtures. It wouldn't exactly surprise if they scored in any of the poor ones they have.

Perhaps there's some doublethink here and I should look at premiums who might be benched too. Need to think that one over.

If you have good bench cover, Saka is a great option. Start him in all the easy Arsenal games. He gets subbed out more than he gets subbed in which basically gives you at least 60 in all the games he features in.

Excellent point that about the distinction of being subbed off and subbed on.

What's the best front 3 for the run in?

Kane, Bamford both on form but are they essential
Watkins has a 2 games still tbc so possible DGW's
Antonio is on good form, but is Lingard suitable cover and when Grealish is back will that dent Antonio's output
Then there's Vardy, DCL and an on form Lacazette

Why would Grealish's return dent Antonio's output? I don't understand.

But yeah, I would say Kane and Bamford are essential. Third slot is hardest to pick, would lean towards Lacazette on my GW 31 wildcard at this moment. Could change.

      Ouch

If it makes you feel better I did the same in DGW24 on WC. I ended up captaining Vardy instead of Gundo. Did manage to hit his one goal this year but that was an amazing swing from Gundo's 38 pointer.

First draft of GW31 WC, what do you reckon?

      My thoughts:
      a) double Leicester attack seems overkill,
      b) City defender (probably Dias) would be nice to fit in here,
      c) one of Jota/Gundo to corresponding premium (Salah/KDB), funds from Vardy probably,
