Fit-again Antonio bursts back onto the FPL scene in time for season run-in

Burnley 1-2 West Ham United

  • Goals: Chris Wood (£6.4m) | Michail Antonio (£6.4m) x2
  • Assists: None | Said Benrahma (£5.9m), Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m)
  • Bonus: Antonio x3, Coufal, Benrhama x2

The fit-again Michail Antonio (£6.4m) is back on the Fantasy radar after a brace against Burnley on Monday evening.

It was a trademark Antonio display with two opportunistic goals from inside the six-yard box, a spurned ‘big chance’ and lots of positive underlying numbers to back up his eye-catching performance.

Fitness, not form, is Antonio’s main worry from a Fantasy perspective as he seems as likely to pull up with a muscle strain as deliver a monster score; this double-digit haul, oddly, was his first of 2020/21.

David Moyes at least had some positive words to say on his condition after full-time:

I was a little bit surprised, he has come back in better condition than when he dropped out, but we never really felt that he had such a bad injury that it was going to be so serious. But I thought he looked in super condition, he has been working really hard and he deserved his two goals tonight and on another day he should have scored another two so there is a bit of both.

Not that we need another West Ham midfielder to add to the mix but Said Benrahma (£5.9m) produced possibly his best display of the season in Lancashire.

A beneficiary of Moyes’ decision to switch from a wing-back system to a back four, Benrahma lined up on the left of a 4-2-3-1 and had more final-third touches than anyone else on show.

Registering four shots of his own and creating five chances, Benrahma teed up Antonio’s second goal with a superb inswinging cross.

He remains a risky punt, however, particularly if Moyes reverts to a back five as he so often does.

And the West Ham manager has been reluctant to lavish praise on the winger all season, even finding ways to criticise him last night:

I thought Said did a lot of good things tonight, but I thought there were a couple of things which he didn’t do so well which I think people will see as well and we are looking for consistency from him.

He got himself a couple of chances to score and made his chances, but I am hoping we have got [more of] them coming.

While Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) for once took a backseat – his late on-target effort was his only shot of the game – West Ham’s full-backs were again heavily involved.

Aaron Cresswell (£5.6m) returned from injury and created another five chances to add to his impressive season total, while Vladimir Coufal (£4.7m) contributed yet another assist for Antonio’s first strike.

It’s four assists in five matches for Coufal and he is now only two behind Cresswell for the season, with the pair responsible for a remarkable 32.7% of the goals West Ham have scored in 2020/21.

Not that the Hammers’ backline is in particularly good shape from a defensive perspective, as their seven-match clean sheet drought is the joint-longest in the Premier League.

Burnley’s back four has been all at sea for some time now, too, with just one shut-out arriving in their last nine fixtures. Only relegated Sheffield United have conceded more goals and big chances in that time.

The Clarets have been more expansive at the other end of the pitch, however, and Chris Wood (£6.4m) has been profiting as a result.

His early penalty against West Ham was his tenth attacking return in seven appearances.

With a Fulham side who need a win and nothing else up next for Wood and Burnley, there is every chance that Gameweek 35’s trip to Craven Cottage could provide the space he needs to extend his purple patch of form.

West Bromwich Albion 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers

  • Goals: Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m) | Fabio Silva (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Conor Townsend (£4.4m) | Nelson Semedo (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Semedo x3, Diagne, Silva, Sam Johnstone (£4.6m) x2

Wolverhampton Wanderers produced an improved attacking display in the Black Country derby which nevertheless failed to mask ongoing shortcomings.

This fixture brought to an end a four-match run in which they’ve only faced teams in the bottom five of the Premier League table but they have scored on just three occasions over that period, with even their goal against the Baggies – a looping Fabio Silva (£5.2m) ricochet – owing much to good luck.

Sam Johnstone (£4.5m) did rack up an impressive nine saves for the second successive week but the fact that the visitors’ 20 shots all amounted to less than one expected goal (0.98) summed up proceedings.

With Willy Boly (£5.4m) suffering from the effects of ‘long COVID’ and unavailable, Nuno Espirito Santo’s switch to a back four allowed his full-backs to get forward.

Nelson Semedo (£5.3m) grabbed the assist for Silva’s fortuitous effort and the right-back had as many penalty box touches as anyone else on show, also forcing Johnstone into his best stop of the match.

Not that many FPL managers will be much interested in the Wolves backline beyond this week, with the lack of a ‘double’ in Gameweek 35 and some iffy fixtures beyond that killing whatever appeal they may have had.

The fact that they have only kept one clean sheet in 2020/21 when using a back four, plus another unconvincing defensive display at the Hawthorns, will encourage owners of Harry Kane (£11.9m) and co ahead of Gameweek 36.

As for the Baggies, they are all but down but at least going out with something of a bang.

The pressing need for wins has seen them rack up as many goals (11) as any other Premier League team over the last five Gameweeks – but they have also conceded the highest number of shots on target (38) over the same timeframe.

While a subdued Matheus Pereira (£5.5m) couldn’t continue his rich vein of form, forward Mbaye Diagne (£6.0m) did make it five attacking returns in as many matches for the Albion.

And if the Baggies continue to open up in a tricky-looking run-in (they could admittedly be relegated this weekend), then Johnstone will at least likely finish the season where is he is now, as FPL’s leading save-maker.

He will also very probably be among the save points should West Brom get a Double Gameweek 35, with the clash with Liverpool potentially being brought forward.

Other alternative is to do a)lingard & vydra to zaha & Davis? Or b) lingard & coady to zaha & a 4.3m defender?

In my opinion you are risking too much for Zaha who is not even cleared fit and plays for weak-attacking team

Not worth it, Son is a better option than Zaha by a country mile even with the DGW, Jota & Greenwood both not 100% nailed, but Jota might get a better DGW anyway

Thoughts on these transfers (2FTs, and with BB chip in mind) :

Dias + Jota + Vydra out
Digne + JWP + DCL in for a hit?

Then will be able to BB this team:
    Mendy Forster
    Shaw Rudiger TAA Saiss Digne
    Salah Fernandes Greenwood Lingard JWP
    DCL Kane Iheanacho

    Martinez
    TAA Shaw Targett
    Bruno Greenwood Lingard Son Jota
    Nacho Kane

    Sanchez Bamford Dallas Stones

    2 ft, £1.8m ITB

Was up to 150k but been battered the last 4 weeks, red arrows down to 256k. I was top of my work league but now second by 17pts, so definitely still in the running. I was playing it safe (maybe too much) but feel like I need to take some risks now.

Stones > Castagne/Digne seems an obvious move then save 1ft for GW36? Or is that playing it too safe still? Leader doesn't have Salah so tempted to get him in, but would probably need 3 moves to do it (unless I lose Bruno after this gw).

    Thanks for any help!

Is there any consensus on here about what is considered a great FPL season overall ranking wise?
    Something like:

    500k - average
    100k - good
    10k - great
    1k - beyond awesome
... something like that? (feel free to adjust if I have missed the range and description)

There's probably not a consensus as different people have different goals, but I would consider any 6 figure rank a disappointing season, and any 4 figure rank a very good season.

      That would have been 5 years ago, but now I think it's more like this;
      500k good
      100k great
      10k awesome
      1k insane
      100 GOD

Hm interesting. I play for 5 years but only last 3 (before this one) were serious, so trying to find some measurement on what is perceived as "good" on this website, which i find containing most of the serious fpl players. Last year was my best ranking, 33k, hoping to better it this year with 62k as current rank

U can get 100k just by doing whatever popular moves everyone on here is doing. Fairly simple stuff. I finished 150k last season after what i thought was a truly horrid campaign. Never getting KDB, wasting Chips, taking failed hits. Some awful decisions

I think u have to get a lot wrong to finish outside top 100k

I would hope that reaching the top 100K would be regarded as more than merely "good". Statistically it represents being almost in the top 1% of all players. OK, so many FPL managers in the bottom half of the more-then 8 million entrants might be playing in flip-flops as they head for the beach at this point in the season, but still. I don't know what, if anything, is regarded as good but I'm very pleased with my current 35K overall position in my first proper season. My hope at the start was to reach the top 1 million.

I'm actually in the top 15,000 but had a bad drop this week from 15,000 to 26,000 with only 24pts

      2. Silecro
        • 6 Years

Yeah, statistically top 100k is something like 1% of the overall amount of players which should in theory be awesome, even though i always take into consideration that 50% of them (if not more) give up after an x amount of gameweeks, but yes, more players play the game, the higher number should be considered as "good ranking"

      1st - successful
      Anything else - try again.

The problem with considering 100k a good season (or whatever) is it encourages you to play to get in the 100k band and that means a lot of playing safe, worrying about EO and the rest. It promotes timidity rather than boldness and emphasises fear of failure over the pursuit of excellence.

I mean, if you set out to climb Everest and reached Camp 2 would you consider that a good attempt? Depends whether you want to measure yourself against the 90% that do less well or the 10% that do better.

      1. Silecro
        • 6 Years
        2 years, 11 months ago

Well that is a demoralising way to look at the 8mil players game based mostly on luck haha. I personally think healthy progression is better way to look at it, meaning: if i managed to end top 50k, i will strive to be in top 10k next year, set a realistic goal because if only goal is to be OR1 at the end, you will mostly end dissapointed even with OR2.
Look at it this way: should Burnley or Wolves be dissapointed every year because they didnt win the league? i doubt so. Reaching euro spots should be massive success for them, and i'm sure that is the realistic goal they are trying to achieve

        1. Silecro
          • 6 Years
          2 years, 11 months ago

...and when they do reach it, then you set a new goal from there: CL spots, or in FPL perspective - top 100. For me that is more healthy way of being ambitious

      Top 10 K - Exceptional
      Too 50K - Amazing
      50-100K - Very good
      100k-200k - Good

Assuming Liverpool DGW goes ahead, I’d say yes.

If you’re happy playing Targett for the double as your third DGW defender, I would get Salah in for Son and downgrade Azpi to a 3.8 (Mitchell). May be very tight on funds, though!

I don't think I can even afford that in all honesty! Azpi -> Mitchell frees up 2m, leaving me 0.2m short of Son -> Salah. So will need to take a hit or lose two from Son, Kane and Bruno to do it for free.

      A) seems a no-brainer to me. Stones can’t be trusted to start (and maybe still banned anyway?)

But C) may be a nice punt this week with it being a DGW and all!

IF Liverpool get a double I’ll have 11/15 double players on BB. With 1FT and 0.3ITB what move or moves would you do with these 4 single GW Players?

    Coady
    Lingard
    ASM
    Kane

Really? What players are must haves that I don’t have? I was thinking -4 at most haha

Safest move is probably just Coady to a DGW def like Holgate perhaps?

Would want to keep Kane and Lingard.

ASM is in a tricky price point. Could take a punt on Saka but that would be risky.

Yeah I guess 12 with ASM, Kane and Lingard isn’t too bad

Just managed to shake off my mood surrounding the Utd v Pool postponement (Had 2 x Utd & 2 x Pool plus Rudiger).

So imagine my shock to find that my 9 men only went and got me a very small green arrow. Pretty chuffed with that actually.

I guess it just goes to show that we are all suffering together and there’s always those who are worse off.

I just kind of negatively assumed there would be a lot more people with Bale or Havertz. Or people would be carrying less Pool & Utd players and manage to get XI out this week.

This week is gunna be huge. Hope we find out about if Pool and WBA get a DGW or not...and then I’ll decide on whether to FH or not this week

If Pool end up with a double, almost every serious player will have at least 6 or 7 DGWers I'd imagine.

I captained Bale and the number of others who did that was ridiculously low, 170 out of the top 100K or something.
Was a crazy decision that worked, but I had to break the template to get any success. Did think he'd have a higher ownership as well.

    Martinez, Forster
    TAA, Coleman, Fofana, Rudiger, Coufal
    Salah, Bruno, Son, Lingard, Jota
    Kane, Iheanacho, Wood

    1) With 2FT any transfer suggestions?
    2) Who should I bench out of the above team?
    3) Who would you sacrifice out of the above team in order to upgrade Fofana > Dallas for GW36? Only 0.3 are needed

Not a fan of ‘I’ll post my team and you tell me my transfers’ posts. I like suggestions! But anyway, how about...

      Son > Greenwood
      Wood > DCL/Watkins

When is the best time to play BB and FH?

    Mendy - Forster
    TAA - Dallas - Holding - Phillips - Rudiger
    Son - Salah - Fernandes - Lingard - Gundo
    Vydra - Kane - Nacho

    1FT, 0.0 itb.

Worth a -8 to get Vydra, Gundo & Mendy --> Watkins, ESR & A different goalie?

Sounds like forster will start both. Mendy may only start 1!

El Ghazi 9th in the league for goals p90. Much better option than Zaha and Siggy with actual good stats, but ignored.

I'd probably do something like this:

      TC Bruno in the DGW.
WC in 36 to get a good team for the blank plus set up your bench for the following week
      BB in 37
      Free hit in final GW

Just think he will be outscored over the next two weeks by a few players that have a double and a fixture in 36, especially Mane or Salah ... I have owned Son for much of the season but also sold him a few times too, no place for sentiment in this game 🙂

    Semedo/Gundo/Bamford -> Mitchell/JWP/DCL (-4)?

    Would mean:

    Salah/Bruno/Greenwood/JWP
    Kane/DCL/Kelechi
    (Johnstone/James/Lingard/Velt)
