Solskjaer and Bielsa on end-of-season rotation after Gameweek 37 matches

Man United 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) | Joe Bryan (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Bruno Fernandes (£11.4m) | Bobby De Cordova-Reid (£5.3m)
  • Bonus points: Cavani x3, Bryan x2, Alphonse Areola x1 (£4.5m)

Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) was the top-scoring player as Manchester United drew with Fulham on Tuesday evening.

Over the last six matches, his total of four attacking returns, made up of three goals and one assist, is the joint-most of any colleague.

The Uruguayan international is now level with Mason Greenwood (£7.3m) over the same period. And when the former PSG man has featured from the beginning, he has typically delivered though. His last eight starts have produced five goals and one assist.

Of course, whether or not he can be trusted for a Gameweek 38 trip to Wolves remains to be seen.

Over his last six appearances, Cavani can muster only two starts, although two of his last three goals have come from the substitutes’ bench.

Still, next week’s Europa League final will hang over Manchester United’s preparations for Gameweek 38, and given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tendency to manage Cavani’s minutes, he could be a risky option for the final Premier League match of the season.

Marcus Rashford (£9.6m) was the biggest name to miss out on the starting line-up against Fulham, coming on for a struggling Scott McTominay (£4.9m) in the second half.

“Unfortunately, Scott McTominay had to come off and Fred doesn’t look great while he’s walking now. But we’ve got eight days (until the Europa League final).” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Rashford or Greenwood could take Cavani’s place against Wolves on Sunday. Solskjaer did mention on Monday that Anthony Martial (£8.6m) could feature although he was unable to make it in time for the Fulham match.

In light of McTominay’s enforced substitution, Rashford could find himself back on the left-hand side of the attacking midfield again with Paul Pogba (£7.6m) likely having to drop into midfield to cover either one of McTominay or Fred (£5.3m).

Based on Solskjaer’s line-up for the Triple Gameweek 35 visit of Leicester, Bruno Fernandes (£11.4m) is arguably not safe from last-day-of-the-season rotation either, with Juan Mata (£5.8m) earning a start at number 10 against the Foxes.

Fernandes provided four points for his owners in Gameweek 37 after he was awarded the assist for Cavani’s first-half strike.

“Honestly, I don’t know (if I touched it). In the moment, I think I don’t touch the ball. I didn’t see the replay but the referee was saying I touched the ball and that was the point to make for the onside.” – Bruno Fernandes

Elsewhere, not even Manchester United’s goalkeeper is easy to predict for the Wolves game.

Prior to the Tuesday-evening meeting with Fulham, David de Gea (£5.3m) had only started against Leicester between Gameweeks 27 and 36.

And even as the Spaniard coming into the team for Gameweek 37, Solskjaer explained the competition for who would start the Europa League final was ongoing, suggesting Dean Henderson (£5.2m) could feature against Wolves.

“It’s still up for grabs. It will be decided in these last two league games.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Shaw, Tuanzebe, Lindelöf, Wan-Bissaka; Fred, McTominay (Rashford 62′); Pogba, B Fernandes, Greenwood (A Diallo 83′); Cavani (van de Beek 87′).

Fulham XI (4-2-2-2): Areola; J Bryan, Ream, Adarabioyo, Lemina; Reed (Andersen 32′), Anguissa; Lookman (Tete 89′), De Cordova-Reid; Cavaleiro, Carvalho (Loftus-Cheek 63′).

Southampton 0-2 Leeds United

  • Goals: Patrick Bamford (£6.5m), Tyler Roberts (£4.6m)
  • Assists: Rodrigo (£5.7m), Bamford
  • Bonus points: Bamford x3, Kika Casilla x2 (£4.1m), Luke Ayling x1 (£4.4m)

Patrick Bamford (£6.5m) allayed any fears of his season petering out as he produced a 12-point haul in Leeds’ 2-0 win over Southampton.

After a peripheral display against Burnley, the mid-priced forward registered a goal and assist in a textbook away-day performance from Marcelo Bielsa’s men, a display that went a long way to dispelling any theories about this side tiring towards the end of a campaign.

“Patrick had a very generous performance with a lot of effort. He has had a season in which he has shone. I’m sure he will be very positive about the campaign that he has had, be what may.” – Marcelo Bielsa

After a first half that consisted mostly of defending, Leeds ventured forth in the second period with Gaetano Berardi (£4.0m) and Pascal Struijk (£4.0m) replacing Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) and Diego Llorente (£4.4m).

“Berardi is in an excellent state of form. Him coming on was very useful, he didn’t commit errors and he added a lot.” – Marcelo Bielsa

“It was not my influence, it was their profile of the individualities in the second half which changed the game.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Meanwhile, any Bamford owners worried about his place in the team were handed comfort in the form of Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.2m) early leave, which allowed the in-form Rodrigo (£5.7m) to come into the Leeds team without displacing the former Chelsea man, assisting his second-half goal.

The Spain international operated as a number 10 in an attacking-midfield trio including Jack Harrison (£5.5m) and Raphinha (£5.5m), a role he could realistically fulfil against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Tyler Roberts (£4.6m) may have his sights set on getting back into the Leeds team in Gameweek 38 after getting his first Premier League goal at Southampton.

“I was happy he scored, because he had played many games and he hadn’t managed to do it. And the team in the second half looked a lot more like the team it is. And just how we unlevelled the game in the second half, Southampton could have done the same in the first half.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Meanwhile, it would appear Illan Meslier‘s (£4.8m) season is over after Kika Casilla (£4.1m) came into the side against Southampton and looks set to feature on Sunday too.

“It’s a decision I have made. I want Casilla to finish the season in goal.” – Marcelo Bielsa

“(The two goalkeepers) are two professionals of a very high level. And, of course, the year was a lot more difficult for Kiko, but he was very generous and a very good teammate. The fact that Kiko played today and will play on Sunday is a decision that I decided to make concrete.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Finally, Che Adams (£5.7m) had to come off at half-time against Leeds and looks to be a doubt for a Gameweek 38 meeting with West Ham, which could mean a third successive start at centre-forward for Nathan Tella (£4.3m).

“(Adams) has a little bit of a groin problem. He gave us the signal that he could not go on. He was also tired. He played Saturday and Tuesday against two strong teams.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Salisu, Vestergaard, J Stephens, Walker-Peters; Djenepo, Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Walcott (I Diallo 78′); Tella (Redmond 70′), Adams (Ings 46′).

Leeds United XI (3-3-3-1): Casilla; Llorente (Berardi 46′), Cooper, Ayling; Alioski, K Phillips (Struijk 46′), Dallas; Harrison, Rodrigo (Roberts 78′), Raphinha; Bamford.

Don't expect Shaw to play, but happy for bench to come in. Happy to take a hit. Chasing around 25 points so got to throw a hail mary.

    A) Bale and Ward-Prowse to Mane (c) and Willock
    B) Digne and Watkins to Robertson and Antonio/Wood (probably captain Trent)

A - think Mane differential captain and hope Salah blanks (assuming your rival captains him) is your best shout at overturning a 25 point gap. Best of luck!

Yeah - I need to workout what went wrong this season but think it was trying to stray away from the template too often. Think I'm gonna go with an 8-3 rule next season and have a template of 8 players and have no more than 3 differential players in my team each week.

      So many options.
I'd say Robertson is also on the cards.

Or DCL to Firmino even? Or complete rolling the dice would be to hope for a Werner explosion. Though that is more likely to jeopardise top 10k hahaha

Mane would be best, but no easy route for you and would not want to lose Son.

Was reading some interesting thoughts on the other page about how rank can suddenly drop dramatically. I think the luck element is hugely underestimated but trying to be too clever is probably the biggest pitfall to try and avoid.

I’ve had unbelievable seasons and pretty mediocre ones too. Normally refusing to get in the template players early enough is the big difference. Just following crowd on captain more times than not is massive.

Agree. Id say only take a punt on the last few gameweeks.

Unless the punts have really good underlying statistics

      • 12 Years

I think there are tiers to ranks and how you play.

As in, you should be able to secure X rank by doing Y standard FPL moves. Going template secures you a solid basic rank. You then need to be slighter earlier at jumping on form players or earlier at ditching form players to move up further.
You then need a decent amount of luck to really get ahead and finish very high.

You also have to remember that to get a good rank you just have to score more than the other players, you don't need to have a team of 11 players who all score 20 points per game. If everyone else but you only had defensive midfielders then you can win the game by finishing with 1500 points overall but having the worst attacking midfielders in the game.

It sounds like a basic concept but it is essentially the idea behind using EO as a shield. You don't need the best theoretical performing team, you just need a team that performs better than the majority of other players who definitely won't be getting the optimal transfers in 100% of the time.

To put it another way, look at the 'Kings of the Week' each week and most of the time half of the 11 players will be random low ownership ones who no one would realistically choose. This is why going template works. You make sure you have the regular performers who score well one week but blank the next. If you try and differentiate and try to find someone who isn't scoring at a regular rate but you think might start, you're already at a disadvantage and if your unique choice doesn't start performing then you're even further behind than just choosing the template player to begin with which may have been timed before lots of other FPL users, which would then give you the rank gains you need even by just going "template"

Haha, I was reading this thinking it makes sense, and had a look at your history we are pretty similar in that we got top 10ks in same seasons, and struggled in the 17/18 season, and are middle of the road this season.

Maybe we adhere to a similar format/strategy!

        1. fusen
          • 12 Years

I still feel there is a good chunk of luck that can impact ranks though.

Hopefulgwly I can finish this season near to 50k but the key thing that sticks out is GW 18 when I owned Sterling and (c)'d KDB and Sterling missed the penalty.

It was like a 25~ point swing, which sure I could have in theory gained back or bettered in the gameweeks since then but that is a massive 25 points around me right now. It moves me maybe 30% up or down the top 100k places.

Things like that are just what you have to put up with and cannot control but can cause large deviations in how good your season ends up.

As well as the usual swings of fortune one experiences in a normal FPL season, this season has had numerous pre and post deadline postponements too, which disproportionately affect some managers more than others. That won't be captured in end of season ranks of course, but that doesn't change the fact it happened.

            1. fusen
              • 12 Years
              2 years, 10 months ago

Absolutely, deciding to go with player X instead of player Y who are both good picks, then player Y misses a game due to a postponement and someone else went with player X gains their points.

There was no "wrong" decision by either player, it just was an added luck factor this season. I got caught out by a few of these scenarios but not as badly as some of my friends who one week could only field about 7 players due to the covid postponements.

It has only just dawned on me just how important a good start to the season is to reaching the top 10K.......3.2 Million before GW7, managed to get to a 6-digit OR by New Year..........now at top 20K but oh what could have been if I had taken those first few gameweeks a bit more seriously!

I've had a wider range but similar frustrations - bouncing between 70k and 8.5k for about 13 GWs

Got big plans for the last week or just letting it play out?

I’m nursing a 15 point lead in my ML, hoping that Salah outscores Kane and doing the standard Bruno>Mane to finish off the season. I don’t think it’s worth it to risk my ML to get into the top 10K (which would require a huge differential captain)

I was commenting on such a thing in a minileague. Chap at the top is 70points clear, yet the top 4 in the league are on near identical points over the last 18 weeks

How do man utd players deem shaw is the player of the season?
Is it just as he played somewhat to the potential we all expected when he first signed? So the award is for most improved/clubman.
Good season, for sure, but bruno f is dragging that utd team by the scruff of the neck.

I missed the deadline like an eejit. But thankfully I always roughly set up my team for the following gameweek as soon as a gameweek is live. I suppose there is a lesson there. Surprisingly I have done OK even though I had forgotten what players I played.

Trust your gut. If you didn't think gabriel/arsenal def was a good shout before gw1, don't be swayed by a fluke goal and haul.

Happens every season. Kind of just avoid points chasing to a certain degree.

Don't try to be too fancy going away what the majority of managers on here are going with - or you could be in trouble.

I learnt my lesson from previous seasons. Take 2/3 gambles max. Keep it simple based on fixtures, watch form in the pre season friendlies to spot the value picks 4.0, 4.5 etc

Then only pick the less obvious value picks as the season develops.

Quite possibly, but if you want to win a ml, this is the only way at this point.

I'm interested in why Mané is suddenly appearing in every proposed transfer plan for GW38.... Yes, LIV will be going all guns blazing and Mané will start and play the whole match almost certainly...

But, based on his form and relative lack of hunger on the pitch compared to some of his teammates, I don't see why people suddenly have confidence in him delivering?

Or is it purely because loads have a sure-not-to-play Bruno to get rid of?!

Mané > Robertson for me due to the fact, that goal difference might be the deciding factor between Liverpool or Leicester for the top4 spot.

Robertson or Firmino are also both good options.

        • 6 Years

Agree with you that goals is where the focus will be.

Maybe DCL to Firmino would be an interesting one!

It will and is. Especially if Jota is ruled out. If chasing he could be a someone high risk - high reward (C) punt even.

But I would probably personally prefer Digne -> Robbo over DCL -> Firmino (I think)

If I had my way I think I'd retain FTs as they are, reduce the cost of a hit to -2 and remove all of the chips except the first wildcard, which I'd allow use of at any stage of the campaign.

I think the -4 makes the game a bit boring week on week, while the chips introduce a lot of luck into what is already a game where you are highly dependent on good fortune.

That said I think FPL has the rules about right, when I've played other games like The Sun and Telegraph, I've tended to lose interest by the time Guy Fawkes is polishing his rocket.
