Pro Pundits 20

Fantasy Premier League is back for the new season and I’ve been sharing my initial impressions on the price list.

Having already looked at the pick of the goalkeepers and defenders, I now turn my attention to the stand-out midfielders and forwards.

Midfielders

Premium midfielders I like
  • Mohamed Salah (£12.5m)
  • Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m)

The pair of Salah and Fernandes don’t really need much justification so I will instead talk about the players that didn’t make the list, the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m), Sadio Mane (£12.0m), Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) and Son Heung-min (£10.0m)

De Bruyne actually had a disappointing season by his high standards and I don’t think the more advanced role that Pep Guardiola opted for at the start suited him. He would still be my go-to Manchester City selection if I had to pick any of their attackers but he is probably £1.0m too much for my liking. Sterling’s starting role is unclear and I don’t like the noises he’s making during EURO 2020 about his game time with the champions.

FPL have made the decision of going with Salah over Mane a no-brainer with the Senegalese’s pricing. Something like £11.0m would have made the dilemma far more interesting but with penalties in his locker, the Egyptian is an easy pick. Son doesn’t really interest me until I know who Tottenham Hotspur’s manager is going to be and more importantly, where Harry Kane (£12.5m) will be playing.

Mid-priced midfielders I like
  • Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m)
  • Kai Havertz (£8.5m)
  • Jack Grealish (£8.0m)
  • Phil Foden (£8.0m)
  • Mason Mount (£7.5m)
  • Diogo Jota (£7.5m)
  • Harvey Barnes (£7.0m)

Mahrez and Foden both established themselves as first choices and were instrumental in Manchester City reaching the Champions League final. Pep roulette isn’t usually that bad in the first few weeks of the season and I’m expecting City to play more free-flowing attacking football this campaign with a normal schedule and the return of fans in stadiums.

The Champions League-winning duo of Havertz and Mount combined to score their winner in the final and will be a key part of Thomas Tuchel’s attack this season. Mount is one of the most nailed players in the Chelsea team and at £7.5m he is a set-and-forget option that will keep ticking along with points. I was a bit surprised that Havertz was classified as a midfielder with the time he spent up top once Tuchel took over. Chelsea have been linked with a lot of strikers such as Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku over the transfer window and if the Blues fail to sign anyone, I expect the German to be spearheading the attack more often than not. However, if they do sign a striker, then I worry about Havertz getting consistent game time as the Blues still need the likes of Timo Werner (£9.0m) to stretch the pitch and provide pace out wide in a front three.

Grealish is a man in demand in the summer transfer window, and if he stays at Aston Villa he offers great value at £8.0m with both goal and assist potential. The addition of Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m) to their ranks means teams now have an additional threat to worry about and Grealish should enjoy linking up with the Argentinian. Jota has been priced £4.5m cheaper than Mane, which I found quite surprising. Any injuries to their traditional front three would see the Portuguese get regular game time and he should get minutes off the bench even when he’s not starting. With Liverpool’s kind run of fixtures, he’s a very tempting option but one I will likely go without due to the uncertainty of starts. Barnes interests me more than James Maddison (£7.0m) if he can recover from his knee injury in time for the season start.

Budget midfielders I like
  • Bukayo Saka (£6.5m)
  • Emiliano Buendia (£6.5m)
  • Raphinha (£6.5m)
  • Dele Alli (£6.5m)
  • Joe Willock (£6.0m)
  • Ismaila Sarr (£6.0m)
  • Emile Smith-Rowe (£5.5m)
  • Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m)
  • Mathias Jensen (£5.0m)

As mentioned earlier, I have a bit more faith in Arsenal this season with the lack of European fixtures which should see a more settled, rested line-up every week. The pair of Saka and Smith-Rowe should see consistent game time and offer great value for when the Gunners have a kind run of fixtures. Both are underpriced in my opinion.

Speaking of underpriced, I don’t think anyone in midfield is as undervalued as Raphinha. The Leeds winger would have probably finished on something like 180 points if he played more in the first 10 games of the season. He offers set pieces and goal threat and is a recognized, proven commodity in the top flight – as are Marcelo Bielsa’s side now. The Whites may not have the best fixtures on paper to start the season but they are likely to come out of the blocks firing and you wouldn’t back against them scoring against anyone.

Buendia’s numbers from the English second tier are absolutely staggering. The Argentine racked up 15 goals and 16 assists in 39 appearances and featured in the Championship team of the week a whopping 15 times. It’s unlikely he will be given as much freedom in the top flight but if he can offer even half that output, that’s a bargain. I’d still like to wait and see how he settles into this Villa side, though.

Alli showed glimpses of his old self under Mason and it remains to be seen if he can find some consistency under new management. He’s one I’m definitely keeping an eye on.

Willock is still an Arsenal player at the time of writing and I am hoping he can seal his move to Newcastle. Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.5m) is classified as a forward this season and with Callum Wilson also priced at £7.5m, Willock could be the Magpies’ value attacker at £6.0m.

Sarr had a strong finish to 2020/21 in a 4-3-3 under new manager Xisco. The Senegalese racked up eight goals in the last 12 games of the season and was the Hornets’ talisman when they were last in the top flight. I have a bit more faith in picking him because I know he can do it at Premier League level.

Brentford scored the most goals (79) in the Championship in 2020/21, which is why I think their budget midfielders are worth a look. Mbeumo (eight goals, 10 assists) often played as a striker at times and saw more consistent starts than Sergi Canos (£5.5m). Jensen (two goals, seven assists) is a great option as an eighth attacker at just £5.0m: his average of 1.5 key passes per game was the highest amongst their midfielders.

Forwards

Tottenham Wolves Brighton West Ham
Premium Forwards I like
  • Harry Kane (£12.5m)
  • Edinson Cavani (£8.5m)

The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£10.5m) have been priced too highly in my opinion and don’t really interest me right now. There are better options than Roberto Firmino (£9.0m) and Timo Werner (£9.0m) at their respective clubs, as well.

Kane is the only premium forward I really fancy but if he stays in north London I don’t think he is worth the £12.5m asking price. I do fully expect him to make a move, though, and if he does go to Man City as rumoured, it would be brave or even foolish not to pick him. A lot depends on who the new Spurs manager is, of course.

Cavani should see consistent game time in the league up till the Champions League campaign starts. The Red Devils have a kind run of fixtures for the first few weeks and I will be monitoring the amount of game time he and Anthony Martial (£8.0m) get pre-season.

Budget and mid-price forwards I like
Why DCL is the key to my FPL end-of-season absolution
  • Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m)
  • Michail Antonio (£7.5m)
  • Callum Wilson (£7.5m)
  • Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m)
  • Ollie Watkins (£7.5m)
  • Ivan Toney (£6.5m)

This is going to be the hardest bracket to pick players from this season in my opinion, with so many fantastic options.

Like Spurs, Everton’s search for a new manager has been a bit more prolonged than expected but whoever is at the helm, Calvert-Lewin is likely to be the main goal threat for the Toffees. Their brilliant fixture run at the start means he is almost a certainty to be in my Gameweek 1 squad.

Antonio and Wilson also enjoy strong opening schedules and though injury issues are always a concern for the pair, they should be fit and raring to go at the start of the season. Iheanacho outshone Vardy for the second half of 2020/21 and although there are rumours of the Foxes buying another striker, the Nigerian should be first choice to start with. At £3.0m cheaper than Vardy, it really is an easy decision.

Watkins has seen a significant price hike by £1.5m but the addition of Buendia to their ranks means the striker should have even more supply to work with. The lack of Grealish definitely hurt his potential in the second half of the campaign and with Villa’s great first three fixtures he’s likely to be a popular, proven pick.

Toney racked up more goal contributions (31 goals, 10 assists) than any other player in the Championship last season and is without a doubt Brentford’s talisman. He was also top for big chances created (10) for the London side. It is worth mentioning that nine of the goals were penalties, though. He’s £1.0m cheaper than most of the options mentioned above and if I do need to find a million pound from somewhere, he is the one I’ll be turning to.

Didn't take me long either but the chances of that team remaining unchanged between now and GW1 are slim.

Probably only 2-3 changes because of players leaving or injuries.

Transfers, injuries, preseason friendly wagons, late back from Olympics etc.. RMT's atm are a complete waste of time and totally pointless.

People say this every year and it never happens. If it does, you are likely stubbornly holding on to players you should get rid of because you want to prove others wrong, and you end up doing badly.

I dont think the template is actually that good and will get shaken up as soon as the first ball is kicked, as it doesnt have an City/Chelsea players in it, and as soon as Kane gets his move, or the premiums in hiding i.e. Havertz/Mahrez explode it will get interesting.

I have found the best looking team to be a 4-3-3, albeit it looks a little disjointed from a balance perspective.

Would prefer a 3-4-3 but the extra midfielder I'd want would be in the £8m range and necessitates having a budget defence, with TAA the only premium pick.

Thoughts on this lot, WC still available so this is for 1 Matchday only:

    Stekelenburg | Ward
Spinazzola | Di Lorenzo | Dumfries | Kimpembe | Danielson
    Insigne | Berardi | Wijnaldum | Grealish | Forsberg
    Ronaldo | Benzema | Depay

Same I'd say to anyone on what's essentially a free pass - why not? There's no obvious weirdness there.

Only mistake I think some with WCs will make is to try to overthink it and go TOO differential. Best going in with the simple mentality of picking the players you think will get you the most points.

    Stekelenburg / Simon
Maehle, Spinazzola, Dumfries / Pavard, Kimpembe
Damsgaard, Berardi, Wijnaldum, X / Forsberg
    Depay, Benzema, Y

    1. X = Insigne/Pogba, Y = Ronaldo

Why is Grealish a must have? Assuming we will have 2 premiums and 1 cheapy that leaves 2 midfield slots and there are several players around Grealish price who could arguably be better options. Gundagon, Mount, Foden, Jota, Greenwood to name a few or possibly even Raphinha at 6.5.

If City are willing to pay the 100m, I trust he would be one of their most important players and start almost every game, similar to KDB. They dont pay 100m for someone to sit on the bench

There are no must haves dude, it’s just not that easy 🙂

Best get comfortable with the idea that no matter who you pick, there’s a fair old chance they’ll be the wrong options for the start, and that the players you thought might do well but for whatever reason, chose to avoid, will be the right options from the start

    Ronaldo, Immobile, Depay
    Wljnaldum, Insigne, Berardi, Damsgaard, Forsberg
    Spinazzola, Maehle, Dumfries, Varane, Danielson
    Stekelenburg, Ward

Any changes you would make. Still have WC by the way.

Yeah, looks grand. Maybe take advantage more of WC left by getting players thatcould do we this game week, like Perisic or Havertz, but could go out. One of them for Insigne?

    Morning people

I dont understand how year in year out people still go for last years template to start and assume things wont change

We all have no idea how the season is going to go, given the fact 99% of will WC early im surprised by the lack of predictions rather than templates from last year

    Preseason last year :
DCL was a troll, Everyone had to have KDB in week2 ,Bamford would flop like he did before, Kane was almost now where to be seen, etc

In saying that im super suprised by the lack of any variation, nobody has a clue what will happen :

Players i think may make a mockery of their prices to be this years DCL/Grealish/Son/Kane etc
    Maupay
    Pepe
    Werner
    Wilson
    Havertz
    James
    Rashford / Future Sancho
    Torres
i also like the Brentford attacking double up in midfield and attack

I also think Son will be good value, if Kane leaves even better, he will then be on Pens.

Overall i think Chelsea are super underpriced, i dont see any value in KDB and Bruno is also overpriced i reckon. One premium midfielder (Salah) is my plan to start

I agree on Pepe and Havertz being great value. Pepe is the most underpriced in the whole game IMO (along with Auba if he remembers who he is).

I think there's a natural inclination towards risk aversion at the start though, particularly given the fixtures Bruno/Salah have.

I have Pepe in my first draft and thinking he will definitely be scoring a few goals and assists this coming season for sure too.

But Pepe's output is much better since , and he is on pens.

I dont think United have great fixtures though. I dont see Bruno being captained very much early. I would say now is the best time to risk, we have no data, so the template from last year is somewhat of a risk also.

And then most will WC anyway so its a free hand to add a player or too.

        Havertz + Werner = 17.5mil
Bruno + 5.5mil = 17.5mil , and as i said not many standout fixtures to captain him in.

My key takeaway as last season was winding down waste stay the hell away from Chelsea & City (unless Kane signs)

Their squads (and schedules) are just obscene, particularly in the positions that matter for FPL, and they’ll likely just wreck people’s plans with rotations

Will see how it goes, but I want to remember that little nugget & see how it turns out

*unless they get injuries that make it very, very obvious who’s going to start for an extended period, and that happens to line up with fixtures

what i remember from last year is my season was salvaged because i got on Stones/Gundo and the Chelsea defence at the right time.

Stones was only really an option because Laporte wasn’t properly fit though - as the season wore on he became less & less useful - Laporte, Stones & Aké will all get minutes, and even Dias won’t be immune to it

Gundo was an exceptional case - but as soon as the injury crisis abated & he dropped back to where he’s played for 90% of his city career he was dead as an option again - even at 6.0

The way Laporte is playing in the Euros, I can see him and Dias being regular at least until the CL kicks in.

This would be the right move imo, a left footed and right footed CB is the way to go if possible

Yep - Getting him in GW10 after he finally got fully fit, remembering how he used to be Peps favourite (and a goal machine) instead of stones or Dias was another haunting error from last year

So many points lost in the 5-6 gameweeks it took to make the switch to Dias, and pair him up with Stones, and later Cancelo involved too

All were good picks around the middle of last season - but I’m personally done with them for now unless we get certainty in particular positions

Chilwell & alonso were disatser zones as soon as Tuchel came in though - Reece James was worse

Rudiger was the exception (who I had) but he’s not 4.5 any more

Azpi, Christensen, Thiago, Zouma - they have far, far too many options imo

          1. Andy_Social
            • 13 Years

              • 15 Years
              4 years, 5 months ago

It’s entirely possible, but it’s Tuchel - he’ll likely play Alonso in some of the easier games if nothing else

Every teamsheet would be a sweat

      4. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 15 Years

Obviously I should add - this isn’t a blanket hard & fast THOU SHALT NOT SIGN ANY CITY/CHELSEA PLAYER AT ANY STAGE thing… more that with today’s squads, schedules and managers I’m not interested in the slightest

An injury crisis, appetising double gameweek sitatuion, or some other non-standard type thing would be needed to tempt me personally anywhere near them

          1) Alternatives at 5.5 and below. Thats 2m difference if going for Trent, 1m difference if going for Van Dijk.

          2) To check whether they can be defensively reliable or not.

As posted earlier, if going for 3 at back:

          - Trent, 5m, 4.5m = 17m
          - Dias, Shaw, Digne = 17m

Some might argue that decent cheap defenders allows to get Trent with less compromise but I'm looking at that spot as cash saver.

I feel like I've got a really strong and balanced side and the reason for that is I have only one 10M+ asset in Salah, and no Liverpool defender. It gives me 3 premium defenders, 5 midfielders and 2 of those mid-priced strikers.

      Yeah more than likely

Haven’t seen much of Buendia either other than his highlights reel which you can watch on YouTube (there’s as much, if not more, bad defending & bad goalkeeping as there is jaw dropping talent… but he was unbelievably prolific with Pukki for sure)

If Grealish left AND Buendia was on pens, I’d be totally comfortable starting with him
