The Promoted

Our series on the newly-promoted Premier League sides continues with a look at Norwich City’s midfielders and forwards.

We have already assessed the Canaries’ defence, with focus now switching to Teemu Pukki (£6.0m) and his teammates who operate higher up the pitch.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

WHAT IS NORWICH CITY’S GOAL-SCORING POTENTIAL?

Norwich were crowned 2020/21 Championship winners with the second-best attacking record, having scored 75 goals in their 46 league fixtures.

That was four short of Brentford’s total and 18 fewer than they managed upon promotion in 2018/19.

However, no team attempted more shots (716) than Daniel Farke’s side, and they also made the most passes while averaging 58.3% of the possession in their matches.

In the end, the team accumulated the highest points total in the Championship since Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018, but questions remain about their ability to compete at the very highest level given that chief creator Emiliano Buendía (£6.5m) has been sold to Aston Villa.

The Argentine playmaker assisted the most goals in the division last season (16) and chipped in with 15 of his own strikes; combined, that total means he was involved in over 41% of the goals that Norwich scored in the English second tier.

Pre-season may offer us clues as to how City will operate in the Premier League without him, but given their awful early schedule, we have plenty of time to assess their Fantasy prospects before their schedule takes a turn for the good in Gameweek 5.

The question many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will be asking themselves is: can any of Farke’s current crop embrace the extra attacking responsibility?

MIDFIELDERS

Buendía’s departure does leave a significant hole in the Canaries’ attack, but Todd Cantwell (£5.5m) is perhaps the one who is most likely to step up.

In his debut Premier League campaign, the 23-year-old bagged six goals and two assists, a total that he improved upon last season with 12 attacking returns in 30 starts.

Priced at just £5.5m, Cantwell could offer value once the fixtures ease.

Chelsea loanee Billy Gilmour (£4.5m) also has potential as a bargain-bin enabler, who can sit on your bench and at least offer appearance points when required.

While the general assumption is that the Scottish international will slot into the hole left in the starting XI by Oliver Skipp (£4.5m), Farke may switch from his usual 4-2-3-1 setup to a 4-3-3 in an attempt to carry more central dominance.

That may see Gilmour and another no. 8 sit in front of a defensive midfielder, which would allow him to operate slightly higher up and therefore give him a better chance of picking out those through balls Pukki thrives on.

Either way, he should at least be a week-in, week-out starter, which is perhaps all we can ask for in a £4.5m midfielder.

Elsewhere, Kieran Dowell (£5.5m) may take up the no. 10 position if Farke keeps faith in his 4-2-3-1. The attacking midfielder finished 2020/21 with five goals, all of which arrived in the final part of the season, but it is Buendía’s replacement, Milot Rashica (£5.5m), who arguably has the most potential.

The 24-year-old joined Werder Bremen in 2019 from Vitesse Arnheim and went on to record a combined 46 goals and assists in 100 games.

Rashica played mostly in a 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 in Germany, as either the central attacking midfielder or a striker, but has also shown an ability to play on either flank.

At this stage, we should note that he struggled a bit last season, perhaps as a result of having his head turned by transfer speculation linking him with a move to AC Milan, but he is an exciting player.

Meanwhile, Przemyslaw Placheta (£5.0m), Onel Hernández (£5.0m) and Lukas Rupp (£4.5m) saw limited game-time last season due to injuries or a lack of form, while box-to-box midfielder Pierre Lees-Melou (£5.0m) arrived earlier this week from Nice.

He played largely on the left of a midfield three in France and scored four goals in 34 appearances last season. Nothing to get too excited about from a Fantasy perspective, then, but he will at least add some competition in the midfield area.

FORWARDS

Norwich have a trio of options up front, but providing he is fit, Pukki is the one who will start.

The 31-year-old scored six of his 11 Premier League goals in 2019/20 in the Canaries’ opening five matches, and though his influence dropped off, it was still a reasonable return from a budget forward.

The Finland international scored on 26 occasions in last season’s Championship, accounting for 35% of his team’s goals, and once again proved to be one of Farke’s strongest assets.

His movement is superb and he thrives off balls in behind the opposition’s backline. He also loves to shoot from the right-hand side of goal, which is something to keep in mind once we know which teams are more susceptible to giving up chances from that zone.

However, the loss of Buendía is a real blow for Pukki. The Argentine produced eight assists for him last season, and their partnership will not be easy to replicate.

Finland were eliminated from EURO 2020 in the group stages, which does allow Pukki the recovery time to be ready for Gameweek 1, but most FPL managers will surely be happy enough adding him to their watchlists and making a move in Gameweek 5 if the signs are positive.

Adam Idah (£5.0m) and Jordan Hugill (£5.5m) make up the forwards list, but are nothing more than back-ups to Pukki.

Thanks . Another list of wait and see.

    Buendia is a big lost.

4 penalty saves and 3 assists(!) in the 5 seasons in PL he played more than 2000 mins per season.

If Pukki against M.U , he will mostly score from AWB or Shaw's side?

Their central defence has strengthened a lot since he bogged off for a disastrous loan spell. The danger with picking him (and/or Steele) for your bench is he takes up a spot when you might want triple Seagulls (eg Sanchez, Lamptey, Welbeck).

It has been reported that City will have to choose which of Harry Kane or Jack Grealish to buy but The Athletic understands that is not the case and that they will sign both if Spurs and Aston Villa agree to let them go — and as long as City also sell some established first-teamers, which they expect to and has always been part of the plan.

They know, of course, that it will not be easy to land their top targets and neither will come cheaply: City estimate the total cost for Kane and Grealish to be £175 million to £215 million.

I'd always figured they could only afford one, and if it's a straight choice between the two surely there's nothing to think about - their squad is bloated with attacking midfielders and has no competent striker.

Puts into perspective how futile current drafts are. Kane to City and we're ripping them up attempting to force Kane, Fernandes, Salah in the same side. I've done it with TAA added but it causes a major change in our drafts. Haven't even got Sancho's price yet!

Both would be close to impossible imo

Would Villa ask any less than Spurs? Not saying that Grealish is the equal of Kane but just that that is how Grealish could be valued as a player who is still short of his prime and the ultimate talisman with - right now - the sky as his limit for potential.

Palace were turning down offers for Zaha at 80 mill plus players 2 seasons back. That I think is the comparison. Back then Zaha was at his peak (beyond it now) and had little or no room for growth. Grealish is equally important but still has that "what if..." possibility.

I think I’m gonna go with the Robbo/Trent combo this year - 5/6 easy fixtures and after last seasons shambles at the back I think Liverpool will want to focus on being defensively sound (With Matip/Konate/VVD/Gomez all back as well)

That would be overkill in the defence and I don't think Dias is great from the start either, personally would downgrade Ederson to any 4.5GK you like, downgrade one of Shaw or Digne to a 4.5 and then use that extra cash to upgrade your starting attackers

I wonder what are Nuno’s plans for Eric Dier this year

He’d jump to the top of the 4.5 queue if he’s going to DM him

Even just playing him as one of 3x centrebacks would be profitable at 4.5

Very much on a list for me and level with Fofana more or less if I go that way.

Tidy start overall for Spurs but Nuno would need to do what Mou failed to do of course.

I'm expected 3-at-the-back with wingbacks. Didn't Spuds just get rid of Davidson S and get a decent centre-back? That would leave 2 slots from Aldi, Dier and Rodon. At DM remember Skipp is back.

Tbf, if nuno gets Spurs humming in a 3-5-2 then that’s a template buster

We’d have 5.0 attacking wingbacks and 4.5 nailed defenders with set piece threat

And potentially Son as attacking focal point on pens, DFK’s & corners if Kane goes

        Definitely need to monitor Spurs

    Bowen?

There was a bit of chat about him last night but could he a 6.5 option that is being ignored and worth exploring on here.

Great returns last season: 8 goals and 6 assists from limited minutes. 100% has an eye for goal and good assist potential in an improving side.

Europa is a possible issue but the schedule doesn't look that poor and early on anyway is irrelevant and WH have a nice start. The bigger question is what WH do with the Lingard spot and whether they sign a forward proper instead. No Lingard replacement could/should mean more minutes?

Think he flatters to deceive a bit for FPL

He’s one of these guys that, for whatever reason, never gets criticised for blanking, and generates a fair bit of noise when he returns (a bit like Saka, and the polar opposite of guys like Bamford and Watkins, who are immediately screamed as being “awful”, “dreadful” and “championship strikers” any time they go more than 80 minutes without a goal)

West Ham is a gap in my side at the minute, and I was considering Bowen - but what put me off him was 20 blanks in 26 appearances from GW13 to end of season - I just don’t have that kind of patience

The set pieces are a big plus, and he’s a talented guy who usually looks pretty threatening though

But ideally Lingard at 7.0 (if) or even Antonio at 7.5 would be my preference from West Ham

        Interesting

Hadn't picked up on that blanking rate. Looked at him at various points towards the end of last season but never quite took the plunge.

Was his rate of returns consistent or did it pick up? Not a perfect comparison here but one that means something to me 🙂 - Eze was poor FPL and medium PL player until the end when he looked a right prospect. First season syndrome of a player adapting to the PL perhaps.

Greater worry to me is WH selection/transfer policy - until Moyes - is just so unpredictable as they always seem to buy a new toy in attack. Too much competition and interchangeable players. Feel sure myself that Benrahma should be an option for instance but there he is just lost in all the noise and the options they have generally (Fornals Lanzini Yarmolenko)

It caught me by suprise as well, because bizarrely it seemed like he returned every.single.time. I watched West Ham (which was a lot as I owned Soucek ) when the prices were released I was instantly drawn to him because of that

But when you look at his game by game on transfrmrkt it shows he wasn’t just as productive as that in reality, it’s weird how your mind can play tricks like that sometimes (they don’t record fantasy assists either though tbf)

But nothing to stop him improving either - he definitely *looked* great almost every time I saw him play

          Absolutely hate Benrhama thouh

So selfish, takes so much out of the ball - like the talented kid in the playground who’d rather run around dribbling as long as he has the ball….

A bit like Lamela & (to a lesser extent) Mahrez

On Benrahma I don't disagree on what he did for WH last time out.

It's more a case of what could happen if he had a reasonably regular slot and was allowed to grow and didn't; feel he had to win the game by himself every time.

Going back to Eze. Don't see there is much between them in talent and Eze was poor enough at times but one thing Palace did right last season was to continue to pick him regardless and allow RH to school him. Now he is head and shoulders above Benrahma - and I don't think that's the Palace fan talking.

Eze has been a super signing, heir apparent to Zaha

Would be a nightmare to play against, as if he’s on it, as a defender you basically have zero control over him & he’ll just do what he wants 😆

Think the point about Eze is that he balances Zaha. It's not possible to double mark both.

Have been re-watching the Palace documentary and there's a parallel here with when Bolassie arrived. It's not so much about which is the better but that it is simply way harder to cope with when you are facing a threat down both flanks or - with Eze who is not a natural wide player - down the middle and down the flanks.

If Palace lose Zaha - quite possible this time if he's really a 40 mill player - then life will be harder for Eze if Zaha isn't there to draw fire.

Yep makes a big difference when there’s a dual threat to mark

Interestingly, I think (or maybe it’s just hope) we’ll see similar with Sancho’s addition to Utd’s attack

They’ll now have credible threat from both sides as well as centrally, which is just going to stretch teams that little bit more

The natural response, particularly from smaller teams will be to sit even deeper, so no guarantees it leads to an increase in goals scored

But logically it should stretch teams that bit more and I think Bruno should be well positioned to add to his 48 returns in 51 games as a result

If i'm not mistaken, Bowen is very rarely a starter, mostly comes on as a sub, so that's why he escapes the criticism of Bamford, Watkins, etc.

Toney looks very interesting to me

A real poacher/one & two touch finisher (which should theoretically be hard for defenders to cope with in any league)

I think his style will transfer better to the prem than a mazy runner/dribbler who slaloms through 4 or 5 players, as that is very hard to do the higher you go through the leagues

Boring answer - but TAA is popular for a reason (his attacking threat)

What’s perhaps not just as widely acknowledged (yet) is how solid Liverpool were defensively in the final third of the season

Liverpool were the meanest defence in the league with just 8 goals conceded in those final 13 games (with no VVD, Gomez or Matip)

For context - Leeds and Chelsea were joint second best on 11 conceded each, Man Utd 12, Arsenal 13, Brighton 14, Everton 15, Man City 17 over that same stretch

But Liverpool clearly managed to clench their defensive butthole again, make no mistake about that

Yep not having a Pool defender (TAA) is quite scary. Just testing what kind of drafts I could make without him. Most likely I will have Pool defender when the season starts. Thanks for the detailed feedback 🙂

Starting with TAA can’t really end your season

But starting without him feasibly could

I think that’s the difference with himself, Bruno & Salah (and Kane if he goes to City)

Much easier to transfer those guys *out* if they start badly than it is to transfer them *in* if they start well

It’s an unfortunate consequence of the game

There were very specific reasons last season - Alisson and VVD won't get crocked again.
And, yes, Villa put 7 past them, I know. I still expect their defence to put points on the board early doors this time.

Two years ago was a bit of a freak though, they had top defensive statistics in the league over the first 12 games but just kept conceding 1 goal in games

I remember it clearly as TAA was being called a “nostalgia pick” culminating in the “why I’m selling TAA” hot topics & articles from the pro pundits in the run up to his blank GW for the club world-whatever-me-doodle

Then he spanked in 26 points vs Leciester the next game lol

That was right up there with Jay Egersdorf’ “Kanexit” strategy just before Kane’s back to back hattricks as top notch pro punditry 😆

I enjoy collating different points of view, nicking ideas, reading about players I haven't thought about etc, but when every single page is invaded at least half a dozen times by the same people asking utterly inane random questions it seriously wrecks my buzz.

I've plumped for him, maybe Rashford's injury tipped the balance for me. I'm resting on the assumption that he'll get plenty PL minutes before the CL matches begin.
