Gomez and van Dijk set to remain Gameweek 1 doubts

The preparations for the start of the new season continued on Friday, with Liverpool, Newcastle United and Norwich City all taking part in warm-up games.

We’ve got all the goal, assist and line-up information in the article below plus brief Fantasy Premier League (FPL) flavoured notes on each clash.

Brentford and Crystal Palace were also in action but sent B-sides out to their respective matches, so we’ve omitted mention of those fixtures here.

Don’t forget to check out our comprehensive pre-season page for more information on the warm-up matches taking place ahead of Gameweek 1.

MAINZ 0-1 LIVERPOOL

  • Goal: own-goal
  • Assist: Owen Beck

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m) were once again absent as Liverpool sneaked a late win over Mainz thanks to an own-goal assisted by young full-back Owen Beck.

The two recuperating centre-halves have returned to training but didn’t feature in Liverpool’s first 90-minute friendly of the summer and look unlikely to be involved against Hertha Berlin next Thursday.

Speaking after the match, Jurgen Klopp said:

Yeah, it would still be a surprise [if they recovered for Hertha], unfortunately. But they look really good. Look, I think, they do everything, they play football, we keep them in training, we do the things we can do, they don’t do too much and stuff like this. We just have to be patient – we prepare for a full season, not for a pre-season game. I will not risk it for a game here, so we have to see. We have a lot of games still coming, pre-season games, but I don’t see them being involved for the next one.

Ibrahima Konate (£5.5m) and Joel Matip (£5.0m) were instead paired at centre-half as the bulk of Liverpool’s first-team got a 45-minute outing in Austria before making way for a more youthful XI.

The duo now looks likely to start in Gameweek 1, according to the Athletic’s James Pearce.

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Sadio Mane (£12.0m) – who almost combined to break the deadlock after 32 minutes – once again flanked an ‘out of position’ Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (£6.0m) in the front three, although there was a first sighting of pre-season of Diogo Jota (£7.5m), who was an unused substitute.

Roberto Firmino (£9.0m) has yet to return to training after representing Brazil in the Copa America and subsequently being handed a three-week break by his club.

Oxlade-Chamberlain failed to make much of an impression up top, wasting the Reds’ best chance shortly before half-time after seeing a shot tipped wide when clean through on goal.

Liverpool XI: Kelleher (Adrian 46), Alexander-Arnold (N Williams 46), Konate (Phillips 46), Matip (Koumetio 46), Tsimikas (Beck 46), Elliot (Clarkson 46), Milner (Gordon 46), Keita (Morton 46), Salah (Jones 46), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Origi 46), Mane (Minamino 46).

DONCASTER ROVERS 2-3 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Ryan Fraser (£5.5m), Sean Longstaff (£4.5m), Callum Wilson (£7.5m)
  • Assists: Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) x2, Ryan Fraser

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

The old FPL double-act of Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Ryan Fraser (£5.5m) reacquainted themselves as Newcastle United edged out Doncaster Rovers in a five-goal clash at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Wilson raced onto a Fraser pass to round off the scoring for the visitors, having minutes earlier been teed up by his former Bournemouth sparring partner for a blocked effort.

Injury deprived the pair of too much shared pitch-time in 2020/21, while the Scot’s ill-fated final year with the Cherries ended in an acrimonious parting of ways.

Fraser has to first nail down a place in Steve Bruce’s 3-5-2 set-up before he seriously re-enters the Fantasy radar – a tall order given the winger-less system.

But deployed at Doncaster on the left of the central three in midfield, he was at the heart of Newcastle’s attacking play.

As well as his assist for Wilson’s strike, Fraser curled home a beautiful opener and should have bagged a brace when spooning over from close range in the second half.

Injury and illness once again meant that Newcastle were without four goalkeepers, with rookie Dan Langley not covering himself in glory with Doncaster’s two efforts

Altogether more impressive were Jacob Murphy (£5.0m) and Jamal Lewis (£4.5m) down the flanks, with the latter laying down the guantlet to Matt Ritchie (£5.0m) with two assists.

Newcastle United XI: Langley, Murphy (Allan 81), Dummett (Clark 70), Lascelles (Watts 81), Hayden (Fernandez 58), Lewis (Bondswell 85), Hendrick, S. Longstaff, Fraser (Young 76), Saint-Maximin (Gayle 66), Wilson (M. Longstaff 66).

NORWICH CITY 2-0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

Assessing Teemu Pukki and Norwich City's attacking assets ahead of FPL return 2
  • Goals: Teemu Pukki (£6.0m), Adam Idah (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Lukas Rupp (£4.5m)

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Teemu Pukki (£6.0m) and Tim Krul (£4.5m) made their first appearances of pre-season as Norwich City won another training-ground friendly in East Anglia.

Pukki – whose FPL ownership is less than a third of that of Ivan Toney‘s (£6.5m) – was the spearhead of Daniel Farke’s usual 4-2-3-1 and raced onto a Lukas Rupp (£4.5m) pass to chip the Canaries into an early lead.

There was another 90-minute showing for budget defender Andrew Omobamidele (£4.0m), although Farke had previously signalled that regular centre-half duo Grant Hanley (£4.5m) and Ben Gibson (£4.5m) would soon return to training.

New signing Pierre Lees-Melou (£5.0m) was stationed in the double pivot after scoring on his debut in ‘the hole‘ but still got forward to register the hosts’ first effort of the game and was part of a move that saw number 10 Kieran Dowell (£5.5m) fire over.

Farke said of Lees-Melou after full-time:

I watched it live and I enjoyed the performance as well. He has shown from the first day his experience, quality and calmness on the ball. He’s also competitive and when it’s time to set a sign he can do this as well.

In possession, he played slightly deeper in midfield today and although he hasn’t fulfilled this that often in his career, he fulfilled all my expectations today and he’s already an important, integral member of our squad so we’re all pleased that we have him.

Todd Cantwell (£5.5m) was lively again down the left flank, while substitute Adam Idah (£5.0m) – Pukki’s back-up this season – added a second goal shortly before full-time.

Norwich City XI: Krul (McGovern 46), Mumba (Aarons 65), Zimmermann, Omobamidele, Płacheta, Rupp, Lees-Melou, Rashica (Idah 46), Dowell, Cantwell (Hernández 46), Pukki (Hugill 46).

      Love the non-template confidence. Questions:

      - Raph on the bench...really?
      - You're confident Jota plays enough?
      - Is Cancelo is nailed on? (I don't actually know)

Going into GW1 without Salah is very ballsy. Its a nice team otherwise.

I'd downgrade one of your City defs to a 4m, play Coufal and use the 2m elsewhere.

      BTW - interesting username.

Given that Leeds' fixtures aren't exactly great to begin the season, I'm coming round to the idea of starting without any Leeds players.

This enables me to start with a sub-premium mid like Havertz or Mahrez who I can then downgrade in later GW's if required.

    Any thoughts?

Watched them a fair bit last season and they do not give a single feck about who they are playing. They attack...all the time. And Raphinha is class. And Bamford is becoming their talisman. Skip at your own risk.

They wont sit back vs anyone, they will press they will attack, but that doesnt mean they will score well or better other options with better fixtures.

Man Utd's back4 isn't looking set for GW1 so can see Leeds scoring at least one goal in that match.
Leeds scored home and away against Everton last season (and should have scored more tbh). They put 4 past Burnley last time and scored 4 (over two matches) against Liverpool and 7 against Newcastle so I think it is fair to say they have a good chance of scoring lots of goals in the opening 5 GWs.

Even with VVD still absent I expect consecutive clean sheets GW 1 + 2. Likely concede goals GW3+4 but TAA/Robba might have the odd attack return and then GW5+6 would expect clean sheets.
TAA&Robbo combo to return you 8 clean sheets and 4 attack returns in opening 6 matches.

I am. With doubts around Shaw's fitness and Everton's dubious defensive form I do like look of Robbo over these 5.5 defs at the moment.

I shall be attempting to reach game week 4 with something like this:

    GW 1:

    Something old, something new,
    Something borrowed, something blue,
A silver sixpence in her shoe.

    Bachmann
    Alexander-Arnold, Coufal, Holgate
    Salah(c), Fernandes, Gundogan, Grealish, Soucek
    Calvert-Lewin, Watkins

Foster; Davis, White, Manquillo …F/T: 0/0, 0.0 ITB, TV: 100.0

Good luck to all - but not too much! 😀

Wolves have a possibility of keeping clean sheets, even with Patricio's departure.

They do, but maybe not until GW4. I have an eye on Ait-Nouri who could be a very attacking wingback.

There were a few people here that said they watched him a bit and thought he was awful, right? (Can't comment as I haven't seen him but I honestly don't expect he'll do much more than be an extra option when Nacho / Vardy need a rest or aren't available this season but he'll be long term successor to Vardy)

Anyone else think this might be the season that Burnley finally go down. Looking at their horrible opening fixtures they look like they will have an uphill struggle on their hands. With Chris Wood at the Olympics i just don't see where their goals are going to come from.

The problem is the club hasn't invested in players for a few years now. They've just acquired new owners, so I'm a bit surprised they haven't splashed the cash. Without it, they'll likely do a Bournemouth, this season or next.

Curious why you have Southampton safe.

I'd have them as level with Palace as the surviving club most likely to right now. It's a paper thin squad and Ings is made of glass which leaves a lot on the shoulders of JWP. Not sure I rate Ralph any more either.

      Pope
      Lowton Tarkowski Mee Taylor
      Brownhill Cork Westwood McNeil
      Wood Vydra

      Hennessey

Morning all! A, B or C in this team?

    A) Lewis, Coufal & Buendia
    B) Stones, Coufal & Smith-Rowe
    C) Dias, Lewis & Smith-Rowe

    Sanchez | Foster
    TAA | Robertson | Coufal | Holgate | Lewis
    Salah | Fernandes | Buendia | Soucek | Bissouma
    Watkins | Wilson | Toney

    Then finally,

    1) Is there a better 4.5 midfielder? Is Gilmour injured?
    2) Better 4.0 keeper?

      I like B.

I also ended up with Foster or Steele as 4.0 GK's.

I got Gilmour as the 4.5 mid, but it could also be Bissouma.

I selected an 11 as soon as the game opened and haven't looked at my team since. As you say it's almost pointless given the amount of variables we don't know yet, it's not just transfers though. Availability of players coming back from international duty GW1, preseason form, injury etc will also become clearer as the season approaches.

Maybe different but different is not always good. Chillwell is very good player. Overperform but not so much so the type that I like but he is not nailed.

UCL didnt start yet but Tuchel is the manager who loves to rotate even when he in Dortmund. He get questioned like Pep get when doesnt use a DM in UCL. But Pep is worst in my book.

Good manager but rotation nighmare. The fixtures is not good too. If u want Chelsea def i think James is the one. Azpi as a captain hard to drop but James get start so much for a few games. Before that Odoi somestimes play as RWB with Azpi CB.

It isnt hard mate. If he falls after 3 hurdles you get rid, if he’s flying, keep him. At 6.5 it isnt a risk. Raph has very tough games in the meantime, i dont see Raph massively outperforming Buendia in 3.

      • 11 Years

First 3 fixtures are a gift. I'm starting with him before sliding over to Raphinha.

Villa are doing some astonishing transfer business, quietly assembling a very impressive squad. I tip them along with Leicester and Leeds as the clubs outside the Top 4 to have outstanding seasons, so they have great value assets in FPL. FWIW, with no real evidence, I feel Hammers have peaked and will drop off a bit, hence I'm not too interested in their assets.

      1. Gunneryank
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Yeah almost the exact same sense for me too, especially with Leeds and Foxes. And we're starting to see people aren't automatically locked in to Raph as much as they were a couple weeks ago for GW1, as the reality of the awful fixtures before GW5 really sets in.

If you're stressing 3 weeks before the season you need to take a break and come back a few days before the season starts where everything will be different and this may not be a dilemma anyway.

RT. Loads of transfer uncertainty to come, injuries, players returning from Euros. Things will look very different in 2 weeks.

Hey guys, what looks the better choice of the following…

    A) Bruno Sarr 4.0
    B) Sancho Jota Ayling

4.0/Ayling would be my 5th defender and would very likely not play unless needed due to injuries.

    Thanks 🙂

Yes, one too many in midfield (Mahrez/Jota).

I'd also replace AWB. Not sure what the appeal is.

I think some are picking AWB as a placeholder for Shaw in case he doesn't start.

      Webster for sure.
Veltman especially as Lamptey is a doubt. Can either play at LCB or LWB.

Veltman could be a good pick with those fixtures, especially if he's played as a wing back.

doesnt look like 100m squad at all ,however apart from lamptey its a good unit if covid interferes, but no bruno is always going to result in this sort of thing ,good luck..

B,ive seen the odd scheme where managers are going without liverpool,im going without city, so wouldnt go near mahrez ,pep is a rotation nightmare,im doing without,i also assume he'll mess about with kane..

I think Mahrez is the favoured RW, think I saw he started 7/8 of the beginning fixtures last season, even more likely to start with the other wingers coming back from comps late

Yes, Man City's opening fixture of the season is ironically one of the only times to have a fair prediction of who will start, due to players returning from the Euros. It's fairly safe to say Mahrez will start. I think it's a bit short sighted to say "I'll steer clear of Man City" when their an excellent source of points. You just need to jump in and out at the right time throughout the season. I think it's a sound tactic, as long as you have one of the two premiums in Mo and Bruno

          1. Aubamazette
            • 9 Years

Exactly that, Mahrez is a player that when he plays he's normally involved in at least 1 goal so i think he can most deffo match Fernandes at the start, Norwich fixture for captaincy is also nice, And then Robbo trumps every other defender especially the 4.5's which is why im leaning towards them two

Thanks, so looking at Mahrez last season where he started and played 60+ minutes. He did so 20 times in the prem last season, just counting those games he managed 17 goal contributions, so I'm right in saying he's normally involved when he starts. But now seeing the amount of games he's missed is putting me off

                      Just be careful

“Normally involved when he plays” is a different statement (very different for Man City) to

                      “Normally involved when he starts”

And “Normally involved when he starts and plays 60 minutes” is technically different again, although in Mahrez case he was never subbed off before 60 minutes

So when he plays he has 17 blanks in 27 appearances

And when he starts he has 13 blanks in 23 starts (and of course, 17 goal involvements in the other 10 “non-blank” starts)

You can see how boom/bust he is

Tough one . . . I can see Mahrez getting starts in Pep's rotation early on. I'm a bit twisted on Fernandez; had him last year, but seen the drop off near the end. Now Euros and Sancho on board. More or Less? But, there are some 4.5's at the back! Fofana, Coady, Ayling, you could almost play two if need be in some early GW's. Verdict: Mahrez and Robbo! Only because they are rested.
