Great Expectations

Can Rayan Aït Nouri live up to his potential and become a viable FPL asset?

We assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) appeal of Rayan Aït Nouri (£4.5m) in our second pre-season instalment of Great Expectations, a series of articles on players who have shown glimpses of promise and who are potentially on the cusp of a breakout FPL campaign.

All stats and heatmaps used in this piece are taken from our Premium Members Area.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

THE TRANSFER

Aït Nouri became a permanent Wolverhampton Wanderers player earlier this month after a promising campaign on loan at Molineux last season.

The Frenchman, who arrived on a five-year deal with the option of a sixth, is Bruno Lage’s fourth signing as Wolves new head coach.

On the deal, technical director Scott Sellars said:

“We think Rayan is a great signing for the football club. He proved last season that he’s a very talented player, with lots of potential – I thought he did well and kicked on towards the end of the season. He’s a player who is only going to get better, he’s a good boy, who works hard, and settled in well here.

We’ve used the loan before buying approach well in the past, with people like Jonny and Raul [Jimenez]. I think it’s a great way for both parties to get to know each other, to see if they can adapt and enjoy English football, and we get a chance to have a look first, and see if a deal can be done.

In Rayan’s case, he got a lot of minutes because both Jonny and Marcal suffered injury problems last season, so he had lots of games in the Premier League to show his quality.

At his age, he’s got a lot to learn still, a lot to work on, and I’m sure with us he’ll develop. He has great quality going forward, we all remember his goal on his debut, so he’s got a lot going for him, as well as areas to develop, like all players.”

The question is: can Aït Nouri now kick on and become one of the best budget defenders FPL?

2020/21 REVIEW

It didn’t take long for Aït Nouri to make his mark at Wolves, as he opened the scoring after just 18 minutes of his debut in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace back in October.

In his 23 appearances that followed, the youngster showed plenty of intent to get forward and provide an attacking threat, both as a left-back and left wing-back.

Above: Rayan Aït Nouri’s touch heatmap 2020/21

However, it was in the final nine games of the season that he truly established himself.

With Jonny (£4.5m) needing surgery on another ACL problem and Fernando Marçal (£4.5m) on the sidelines too, Aït Nouri produced solid performances as Wolves secured back-to-back 1-0 wins over Fulham, when he started taking set-pieces, and Sheffield United.

He then impressed against Brighton and Hove Albion and West Bromwich Albion, as his confidence and stature in the team grew.

Statistically, amongst all defenders (with a 1,000-minute threshold), he ranked 11th for crosses and second for take-ons per 90 minutes:

Possibly the lowest expectations I have ever had of a player in one of these articles.

It could well work out, but it’s going to take a lot for me to take any Wolves player seriously. Especially a 19-year-old playing for a new manager.

And let’s not forget Vinagre 😀

(to be clear not a knock at the case made in the article, just that it could have said his stats were those of peak Alonso and I'd still take convincing)

Also if I had to have an outside bet it'd be Luke Thomas - once Rodgers trusts someone he sticks with them, as Justin showed.

Too much very good competition for Leicester FB/WB spots. Pereira, Castagne, Justin and Thomas all about. All of them if nailed and fit are great options

Before listing mine, I should say:
      - I am going to use 3-5-2
      - rotation on defence players (Lamptey/Coufal/Regulion and Bednarek possibly for GW6/9/10)
      - WC a little later (~15?)

And my first pun will be Zaha in GW2 for 100%. CRY play for all in that game, he is MVP and definitely differential.

*punts. And yes, I saw the bad news. I was thinking of swapping him for Veltman but I am not really sure about it. Lamptey had offensive potential on top that Veltman does not really have (unless you consider his corner kick header potential). I am keeping Lamptey for now until it's 100% his recovery will not be full for GW1.

4.5 defenders with offensive potential (wingbacks):

Ayling, Ait-Nouri, Mitchell, Taylor and Lowton, the Watford and Norwich ones. Dunno about Brentford.

        Oh, you mean "punT"!

Lamptey is injured. I have a 3-5-2 draft as well, but I wouldn't trust a Southampton defender at this time. Fair play though, you're the first one here who's looking at one.

Yeah, Bednarek will warm my bench week-to-week. 4.5 is fine price tag for that. But in GW9 (BUR), GW10 (WAT) and GW12(NOR) he might be an option. I said in GW6 too, but that is actually Wolves, so he might stay on the bench.

Still very much in preference of my "Bruno in" draft, however, I have experimented with 2 different drafts without him as well.

Any thoughts? Quite like A, but do I like it enough to leave Bruno out?

    A.
    Sanchez
    TAA - Dias - Digne (White - 4.0)
Salah - Sancho - Buendia - Raphina (ESR)
    Cavani - Watkins - Ihenacho

    B.
    Sanchez
    TAA - Shaw - White (Ayling - 4.0)
Salah - Son - Sancho - Buendia (ESR)
    Watkins - Ihenacho - Toney

Hey Camzy! It has been a long time since we've crossed paths as I did take a step back from the forum near the end of last season. Hope you are doing well!

Cheers, yeah - I see what you mean. I feel a bit light in defence, my option is to downgrade Antonio to Toney and use the extra £1.0 to bump White/Ayling to Digne or Shaw to Dias and keep £0.5 in reserve. Will see closer to the deadline.

If you do that we have basically the same team.

              Henderson Foster
              TAA Chilwell Digne White Hoever
              Salah Fernandes Raphinha Buendia Gilmour
              Watkins Toney Iheanacho

Still fairly happy with Chilwell and Iheanacho as my 'differentials'

I like the Henderson pick. You reckon he is now top choice over DDG? White a decent cover for the odd Chilwell benching as well.

Yes. I do think he's first choice. Maybe preseason will tell us more. But I still remember a few seasons ago when DDG was in most people's team at 5.5m. Henderson is 5.0m and with Maguire - Varane as his CBs.

Chilwell's underlying stats are elite, Chelsea defense is elite. I don't see him being rotated much either unless he's not fit. If I'm wrong, 6.0m allows me to pick whoever, or even go down to the emerging 4.5m gem i.e. Dallas.

Ole has actually hinted that Henderson will be first choice a couple of weeks back which was surprising as De Gea is on huge wages...if that's the case they need to sell De Gea...one of them needs to be moved on anyway I reckon

I can understand saving money on Bruno to strengthen elsewhere but I don't see the point of saving it and spending it on Cavani. May as well have a cheaper striker and Bruno over Sancho if doing that./

    Another Q from me:
Do you think it's better to have Robertson and keep 0.5 ITB or just buy TAA and get the money for upgrades later (I can downgrade Grealish after GW3 to 6.5 so that's +1.5 and I have flexibility in each line).

Only thing I don't like about Meslier is it blocks a Leeds slot.

Firpo, Raphinha, Rodrigo/Bamford is a potential triple up and Meslier blocks it. He also doesn't have the best fixtures. We're most likely gonna wildcard in the first 7 weeks, and in that time I'd rather go for a 4.5m GK or Henderson.

Yeah but I won't ever want 3 outfield Leeds assets...Meslier would be set and forget for me...I'd much rather keep the MUN outfield slots open!

Mmm again, I'm gonna wildcard before it really matters. The short term fixtures thing still favors Henderson. If you think you might go triple MUN, I'd pick Bachmann or Sanchez as my GK instead.

yeah comments structure is confusing at timed...again I'd be happier blocking triple Leeds (don't see a time that I'll need three Leeds outfield players) than MUN but each to their own

    2. Club-De-Belon
      • 2 Years

But that was because he received so many shots to save (140, the rank was 142-140-114-114-107). And this came mostly in H1 due to Leeds ineffective defense. However in H2 they improved significantly. So this year he might have a higher CS potential, but the saves and points from them should come less often.

Problem is I want meslier, ayling, firpo, Harrison, raph and Bamford!!
Ayling + raph most likely two

Meslier will be my sole Leeds asset...might get one attacker down the road, that will be it for me. Guess my situation I'd different as I'm going without Bruno and Salah so I don't need double or triple outfield Leeds assets

I'm planning on Meslier on my wildcard. Starting with Sanchez to get those fixtures out of the way.

I like the 3-5-2 the most.

It's mostly because I don't like the Liverpool defensive double up when there's so much value in defense.

Hmm. My FanTeam draft looks a lot better than my FPL one. Makes you wonder where the value actually is...

    Henderson McGovern
    TAA Chilwell Digne White Kelly
    Salah Mane Sancho Havertz Buendia
    Watkins Toney 4.0

Mane at 10m, Havertz at 8m and Sancho at 9m makes those guys far better value than FPL.

What about this tactic: Buy Grealish + Greenwood and keep 0.5 ITB.

Sell Grealish after GW3 for 6.5 (many good options) and use 2.0 to upgrade Greenwood to Sancho then?

3 GWs should give proper eye-test to assess his adjustment to new team/league and if he is worth the semi-premium price-tag.

Just pick players without a plan to replace them. Lots will happen in the first few weeks that will force us to adapt.

    First draft :

    Sanchez (Steele)
Digne Shaw Coufal (Fofane) (Ait Nouri)
    Buendia Salah Sancho Son (Bissouma)
    Watkins Toney Cavani

    1 million in the bank.
Biggest concern – lack of TAA and Bruno.

You can fix TAA quite easily.

Shaw, Coufal, Fofana > TAA, White, 4.0m

That solves that problem. I like the team.

Too early to say much I know, but on the current popular picks to play devils advocate:

Bruno F - Looked tired in the 2nd half of the season, output decreased and that continued to the Euros. Has he had enough of a break going into the new season? Argument to take someone like Mane at that price point who had a rest this summer and is an easy switch to another player like Bruno at that price depending on how he gets on in the first few?

Sanchez/Brighton - Looking from the outside and no Brighton fan so armchair opinion here, but is it the same team as last year? Appears to be some transfers and injuries which raises a flag for me. I am considering alternatives for that reason.

    1. Club-De-Belon

About Bruno there is another issue that OGS indicated he will change team to a more attacking formation (probably 4-3-3-) where Bruno's impact could be lower in the finishing touch (FPL points). I just think Greenwood/Sancho might provide better value + your team will be more balanced with the additional funding.

About Sanchez I agree. He's a great pick but there can still be better ones. If Lamptey was 100% he could be a better pick with offensive return potential and there is no need to double on their defence.

There is a remote possibility. If Kane goes and is not replaced, he could play in a front 2 with Son. But need to await transfer developments and see more how Nuno sets the team up.
