Fantasy Football Scout and Sky Sports Fantasy Football to join forces in 2021/22 1

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to be partnering with Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season – bringing you even more content on the popular, free-to-enter game.

Our resident experts Luke Williams and Niall Murphy have already uploaded a two-part 2021/22 Sky season preview and will be recording every week throughout the season so you get the very best insight and advice.

This week, Niall – who has finished 3rd, 15th, 17th and 42nd in a stellar career – reveals his first draft and strategy to picking a Sky team for the crucial first three Gameweeks of the season, before the Overhaul kicks in.

Pre-Overhaul Strategy

Before we get into the detail of my team, I believe there are a few pretty fundamental principles to picking a successful pre-overhaul team in Sky Fantasy Football:

1.       Forget the rest of the season

With the presence of the Overhaul – which is effectively a forced wildcard after three Gameweeks – remember, you’re only picking a team for the first few games. Even if you like the look of Teemu Pukki at 7.7m or Billy Gilmour at 6.9m, with Norwich rock bottom of the fixture ticker, you’re effectively gambling on them to score goals and dominate the ball against Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City. I’ll leave you to price that up with your local bookie, but it’s a punt that I’ll not be touching with a bargepole. My advice would be to avoid teams like Norwich, Leeds, Wolves and Burnley until after the Overhaul, with some exceptions, such as a cheap goalkeeper or even Raphinha (8.3m).

On the flip side, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Leicester lead the way at the other end of the fixture ticker and all boast proven and good-value Sky assets.  What’s not to like?

2.       Captains are king… And one of them is probably Egyptian

Of arguably more importance in Sky than the difficulty of fixtures, is the way they fall within the Gameweek. Looking at the matches, Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham/Leicester and Arsenal/Brentford stand out as being either optimal or required assets for early-season captaincies. This is illustrated by the very first game of the season where Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted Brentford take on Arsenal in the only game on Friday night.

Now, neither Arsenal nor Brentford have a stunning set of opening fixtures, coming in at 18th and 9th respectively in the fixture ticker, but you almost certainly want to start the season with one of their players. That’s because you are able to bank double points for simply having an asset on matchday 1 – meaning Arsenal and Brentford have an effective 4-for-3 advantage over other teams. Bruno Fernandes (11.8) and Mohamed Salah (11.9) or another Liverpool asset look favourites for the armband on at least a couple of the early-season matchdays.

3.       Regular starters or bust

Put simply, you only have three Gameweeks to amass points. If there are doubts over a player’s fitness or security of starts after pre-season, at this stage of the campaign, I would encourage you to body swerve. The last thing you want to be doing is picking a player who either misses the first two or three games, leaving you pointless, or who forces your hand to make transfers in Gameweek 1, with only a limited number of weeks to compensate for the use of a transfer.

Of course, injuries happen, and my advice would be to consider each swap early doors on merit. I’ll give you an example. Two seasons ago, Alisson was crocked in the very first game of the season against Norwich. Transferring him out at that stage gave 3 Gameweeks for another goalkeeper to gain enough points to justify a transfer. I assessed that to be worth the move and his replacement, Jordan Pickford, kept two clean sheets out of three. Great. Now, if the injury happened in Gameweek 2, I’d be less inclined to throw a transfer at it, and would barely consider it if in Gameweek 3.

Why Trent if you wont captain him?
Are you comfortable playing Smith Rowe every week when he will be benched?
What are you going to do if your strikers turn out to be useless?

Youve backed yourself into a corner where a wildcard will be needed

        these are my concerns! 😀

Trent offers a lot going forward but could become Robbo or even a utd defender.
i'm happy enough with ESR, but the strikers do worry me.
it's just if spurs don't get a CF in then Son could be golden, and Salah and Bruno seem must have.

Salah and Bruno are only musts if you captain them. If you have faith in Son why not captain him and ditch one of the other two?

So you would rather have Van Dijk than TAA for the whole season?

Because two Liverpool defenders were still the top point scoring defenders last season, in a year where Liverpool’s defence was bad. Only 5 midfielders scored more than TAA last season too.

So I don’t understand the point of there’s no point having him if you won’t captain. Like saying there’s no point having Watkins or DCL as you won’t captain them. I very rarely captain players below 8.5/9m anyway.

Are you going to put the 11 top scoring players from last year in your team? No because you cant afford to. You have to play to the budget, just because a player scores a lot of fpl points does make them good value.

No I can’t but Liverpool have good fixtures to begin with. I think that Liverpool’s defence will be better than last season and TAA/Robbo/VVD could score 200 points or close to that. Maybe only one or two players around their price will be able to score that many points.

Took offence to what? Someone who thinks he has superpowers because he has a 10 next to his name? All you do is argue with people here, run along.

Trent isn't a captain option as long as you have Salah, Bruno or a forward with a more guaranteed output. You're not a newbie, why are spreading argumentative nonsense.

Trent will outscore most of the 7.5 mids come the end of the season. That’s like saying why own a 7.5 mid if you won’t captain them.

            As below.

The upgrade from Obafemi to Bamford is on a completely different scale to upgrading Ayling to Trent.

Not really when the sub 5.5 mids are garbage. The base options between defence and midfielder arent comparable. Investing budget to upgrade Declan Rice to a better option adds value above the budget spend.

So you wouldn’t own Trent if you weren’t going to captain him?

I do agree about Smith Rowe. I’d rather have Mbembo who will play every game.

The strikers can be moved on when and if to others.
        Watkins > Jimenez e.g. in gw4.

This is what makes the game so interesting with differing viewpoints.
With Norwich,Burnley in the first two I want at least one of Trent or Robertson if not both and move one on to fund upgrades later.

Ive even considered going without and going Mane,Salah then moving Salah on for KDB or Bruno.

I think their worth there prices.

I’m also going without Trent. Reasoning being I remember last season even when Liverpool had VVD they were shipping loads and we all decided to sell pool defenders because their price wasn’t worth the assists alone.

Currently on a similar sort of structure but with a 6.5 mid.

Think it's perfectly viable and like it for the flexibility of being able to move funds around to avoid early WC. Seems Ginkapo and I have different views here 🙂

Dubious about Harrison and ESR combo mind. Not liking the early fixtures there and I'd prefer to give myself a better shot of getting onto a budget player who was likely to fire from the off. Lose one 4.5 defender imo.

I've played around with bruno, salah, taa and son combos A LOT. My take is that you need to sacrifice one of them to get a good team with decent price points and a solid long-term perspective. In my mind, salah is the only one i refuse to consider dropping:
      - taa is brilliant, but there's massive value in 5.5 & 5.0 (have you compared shaw's stats to taa's?)
      - bruno's points can be semi-covered by shaw & cavani, given that I won't captain him early on anyways
      - son is in form but is priced according to last years performance/stats and we don't know what we'll get from him with new manager, from which position or if kane stays + city gw1

I'm currently on a draft similar to yours but with shaw, digne and coufal (+4+4.5) in a 343, with the three heavy-hitting midfielders and 3 mid-priced forwards. Will give me louds of alternatives to jump onboard in form strikers.

Not saying dropping taa is necessarily the optimal decision, but I would recommend you to play around with drafts where you drop one of son, bruno or taa.

Yeah it’s a good exercise and it could in fact give you more upside as a whole.

I think my best atempt of having those 4 so far is something like:

        Sanchez
        TAA Coufal Veltman Bissaka
        Salah Bruno Son Buendia
        Watkins Antonio

        Weak bench

(Bissaka could be Shaw if we think he makes it for GW1).

I really like this team tbh

    Sanchez Foster

    TAA Fofana White Ayling 4.0

    Salah Bruno Son Sarr Harrison

    DCL Watkins 4.5

Stones on thin ice I think - he was steadily regressing back to the old Stones we had all came to know & love over the final couple of months - I’d say the pressure from Laporte in training was finally starting to tell

He was bad in the 2-0 defeat to Man Utd at the Etihad & Pep dropped him for the next game vs southampton...

He came back with a mega-haul vs fulham with goal & cleansheet, but that was fulham... Pep benched him next game again away at Leciester (I think he was worried about Vardy & Nacho's guile against Stones) - where Dias & Laporte were very solid & kept a cleansheet in a massive 2-0 win (utd were breathing down their necks at that stage)

Pep brought him back for what was perceived as a "Lower risk" home game to a tired-looking Leeds - and Stones was shocking alongside Ake, City getting beat 2-1 to 10 men... he was all over the place again for Villa's early goal in the next game, before that horror-challenge & deserved red card just before half time (what on earth was he doing that far out??), suspended for the next couple (which meant Laporte came in for the league games and would have been stretched to play in the 2x Dortmund games midweek), benched for newcastle, then came back for the 3-2 defeat by Brighton, where City again were all over the place at the back

He was also caught in possesion early on in the CL final resulting in Werner's early big chance (but it was Werner so didn't result in a goal)... and was again positionally suspect for Chelsea's goal

To be honest I could definitely see Pep sharing duties between all four centrebacks this season (when all are fit) - especially for the "easier" home bankers - the likes of Norwich look rife for rotation

Unless he starts to play 3 centrebacks regularly - in that case then Stone, Laporte, Ake would be much more regular starters alongside Dias - but even then he loves playing Walker in a 3-at-the-back so you never know with this Pep man

nice! yeah you just never know, wouldn't surprise me if Laporte was ahead of Stones at all - never going to get it right, but I don't mind having one that gets rotated randomly every so often

Dias Stones will be the CB pairing ; City were leaky with any other options last year. They aren't attacking CBs, they hold station, in all honesty there's no reason the pair of them shouldn't start every game assuming some rotation in lesser cup matches.

They must have made it aware when you signed up last year.

I subscribed to Hub last year and I unticked the auto renewal box.

IMHO Scout is better organised with articles.
Both are decent for stats tables but im not spending money on a site that promotes gambling.

I do take responsibility for it, I assume last season I was just like meh it’s fine and left it or didn’t look.
If they changed subscription to 1 million pounds though, would it auto renew?

They would of had to notify you of any price change.
Going by comments from others I think any auto renewals have been charged at last years price.
It’s new members who e been hit by the higher price.

Emailed Ted/Rotation's Alter Ego about a payment related question (in advance or renewal).

He said they're pushing for a proper payment method on-site, which I imagine would be better than the single-line on your profile, but don't know how long till it would get implemented.

I don't have an issue with auto-renewal set up but it isn't great that there's not really a notification in advance (or super clear to see details of).

      Think they're aware, but yeah.

Ah email before hand would be the nice thing to do, but I’m not an idiot, almost no company will do that. I don’t fault FFS for not doing it either, but at the end of the day customers don’t like it. This practice of anything makes customers ensure after the first time that it won’t happen again. Every company wants renewal customers so in the long term it’s really better to produce people

Omg typos, it’s better to inform people before hand. As a cash grab it’s ok, but long term it’s bad strategy. That’s what I was trying to say

For the first GWs where Brighton has cool fixtures, and given the investment of 9M, I think it’s a decent risk / reward.

It will depend on Sanchez being injured or not of course tho.

I like Ait Nouri but fixtures and lack of nailedness worry my.

I like White but GWs 2 and 3 are awful.

Have a 3-5-2 very close variation of this currently as I prefer the cash in midfield but could yet swap to the 4-4-2 look.

Like the AWB call. Currently on Tierney ahead of Coufal but with the minimal bench a risk of course.

          VVD(TAA) Tierney Coufal

Just been rechecking the relative value of the Liverpool defenders.

I knew VVD was better value than Robbo who is mispriced in relation to him but he runs TAA close enough too. TAA only clearly wins out in season value if you calculate by points per minute not on points per million.

It would be a handy one million saving on a week 1 budget. Just need to live with irregular returns for value. Rather hope he's fit.

Oh I'd need a very clear indication from Klopp before diving in.

On my current set up it buys me a 7.5 forward over Toney - not 100% convinced of that. But one way of looking at it is that it is a double transfer away from shifting money back into defence and out of attack. Not a lifetime commitment.

No, he was in my team before that 🙂 I watch westham week in week out and think he's always offered a lot; but hasn't had the consistent minutes. That's rumoured to change this season with Moyes giving him a bigger role - and I think he can step into it. He has looked good pre season and let's not forget how great he was the season before coming to westham, the goal he scored earlier was merely a reminder of that. Let's see how it pans out!

After several attempts, I feel I'm close to settling. What do you guys thinks?

    Sanchez
    TAA, Digne, Robbo,
    Salah, Bruno, Benrahma, Raphinha
    Toney, DCL, Antonio

    4.0, Ramsey, 4.0, 4.0

Risk of no back up DEF but unless injured you'd hope those three are pretty nailed.

    How's this looking?

    Sanchez Foster
    TAA Shaw Coufal White Manquillo
    Salah Bruno Son Benrahma Harrison
    Watkins Toney Obafemi

Has fitting in Salah, Bruno, Son and TAA caused problems elsewhere?

Thoughts on this squad? Am I spreading funds abit thin?

    Sanchez
    TAA-Tierney-Fofana
    Salah-Raphinia-Bruno-Son-Buendia
    Antonio-Toney

    Foster-Ayling-Manquillo-Obafemi

    Thanks

I wouldn't want to be playing Fofana week in, week out - why don't you upgrade one of your defender (thinking of Manquillo) to one that's nailed and downgrade Bruno to Havertz say?

Hmm ya don’t want the hassle of being without Bruno I’d only swap him to Sancho if he starts well

thing is (not trying to be rude or anything lol) if you go bruno-less it becomes a lot easier to transfer Kane in later in the season;)

He doesn't have to always play Fofana, he has Ayling.
