Fantasy Football Scout and Sky Sports Fantasy Football to join forces in 2021/22 1

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to be partnering with Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season – bringing you even more content on the popular, free-to-enter game.

Our resident experts Luke Williams and Niall Murphy have already uploaded a two-part 2021/22 Sky season preview and will be recording every week throughout the season so you get the very best insight and advice.

This week, Niall – who has finished 3rd, 15th, 17th and 42nd in a stellar career – reveals his first draft and strategy to picking a Sky team for the crucial first three Gameweeks of the season, before the Overhaul kicks in.

Pre-Overhaul Strategy

Before we get into the detail of my team, I believe there are a few pretty fundamental principles to picking a successful pre-overhaul team in Sky Fantasy Football:

1.       Forget the rest of the season

With the presence of the Overhaul – which is effectively a forced wildcard after three Gameweeks – remember, you’re only picking a team for the first few games. Even if you like the look of Teemu Pukki at 7.7m or Billy Gilmour at 6.9m, with Norwich rock bottom of the fixture ticker, you’re effectively gambling on them to score goals and dominate the ball against Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City. I’ll leave you to price that up with your local bookie, but it’s a punt that I’ll not be touching with a bargepole. My advice would be to avoid teams like Norwich, Leeds, Wolves and Burnley until after the Overhaul, with some exceptions, such as a cheap goalkeeper or even Raphinha (8.3m).

On the flip side, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Leicester lead the way at the other end of the fixture ticker and all boast proven and good-value Sky assets.  What’s not to like?

2.       Captains are king… And one of them is probably Egyptian

Of arguably more importance in Sky than the difficulty of fixtures, is the way they fall within the Gameweek. Looking at the matches, Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham/Leicester and Arsenal/Brentford stand out as being either optimal or required assets for early-season captaincies. This is illustrated by the very first game of the season where Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted Brentford take on Arsenal in the only game on Friday night.

Now, neither Arsenal nor Brentford have a stunning set of opening fixtures, coming in at 18th and 9th respectively in the fixture ticker, but you almost certainly want to start the season with one of their players. That’s because you are able to bank double points for simply having an asset on matchday 1 – meaning Arsenal and Brentford have an effective 4-for-3 advantage over other teams. Bruno Fernandes (11.8) and Mohamed Salah (11.9) or another Liverpool asset look favourites for the armband on at least a couple of the early-season matchdays.

3.       Regular starters or bust

Put simply, you only have three Gameweeks to amass points. If there are doubts over a player’s fitness or security of starts after pre-season, at this stage of the campaign, I would encourage you to body swerve. The last thing you want to be doing is picking a player who either misses the first two or three games, leaving you pointless, or who forces your hand to make transfers in Gameweek 1, with only a limited number of weeks to compensate for the use of a transfer.

Of course, injuries happen, and my advice would be to consider each swap early doors on merit. I’ll give you an example. Two seasons ago, Alisson was crocked in the very first game of the season against Norwich. Transferring him out at that stage gave 3 Gameweeks for another goalkeeper to gain enough points to justify a transfer. I assessed that to be worth the move and his replacement, Jordan Pickford, kept two clean sheets out of three. Great. Now, if the injury happened in Gameweek 2, I’d be less inclined to throw a transfer at it, and would barely consider it if in Gameweek 3.

Latest draft - comments welcome particularly whether to go

A Robertson Greenwood as below (with Rashford should start season and good price point)

    TAA Shaw Digne Robertson*
    Salah Bruno Greenwood* Raphinha

Best draft (at least for me haha) assuming Grealish stay. Just change to someone else if he leaves.

No Trent but got Laporte + Son.
Pick Laporte over Digne and Cresswell.

    Going:-

    Martinez!
    Laporte, Shaw, WanB

Salah, Son (dont want Mahrez), Grealish, Buendia

Carlvert Lewin, Ilheanacho (prime numbers), Wilson (cant get Watkins)

If I get Trent, Son can be Jota / Harvertz (if start and roaring)

Laporte might be third choice CB for City and they only play 2 - weird pick to me.

Otherwise only thing I’m not sure of is Wilson, make sure he’s fit.
(Also don’t understand Iheanacho prime numbers ?)

Get 11 xgi, 14 return from around 17 games.

Play full season , he can get more than 28 returns from 22-24 xgi. Thats not so overperforming. Its sustainable and thats return equal 12million players return.

I have similar team (like many). I dropped robbo down to reguillon and used the 2 bucks to upgrade white to tierney and toney to an 8.0 striker (hoping DCL shows he’s ready by game 1). Tierney/reguillon both feel underpriced to me and buying both means I can avoid spurs week 1 and arsenal week 2/3

      Gundo

Fun call. I'm assuming that's on the basis of no KdB and it makes loads of sense. Like that price point generally with Jota Greenwood and the Leicester pair there too and even Pepe.

Not sure on Henderson. United defence may come good down the season but suspect they'll take time to put it together.

Looking at fixtures I'd go Pickford I think but I suppose prudence may mean a choice between Pickford Shaw or Hendo Digne.

Like Meslier but holding a spot open for possibility of Firpo here 😉

Gundo and Soucek are template-busters, which is nice. Mind you, they're not template for a reason. Soucek might be alright until Europa kicks in, ie 4 GWs, but I don't think anyone is expecting Gundo to play in the advanced position he did for a few glorious weeks last season, unless he does GW1 if KDB is not immediately back.

It's between raph and antonio vs bamford and soucek. Leaning towards the latter cause of bam.
Gundo is more of a fun differential pick. Cheers.

I like your starting 11. Think Gundo has become a dependable pick.

Defence is great. Not sure about Fofana starting the season, but I’m not totally up to date.

Love Bamford and Watkins, although I’d consider fitting in Raph as my Leeds pick. The guy really outshone Bamf towards the end of last season.

Jury is out on Toney. But you need a punt like that and he seems popular. 2 decent home fixtures in the first 4 and if the fans are in, he could be an exciting pick.

Not been on here much lately.

Anyone considering Leicester mids - I’m only seeing Nacho or Vardy up top? Do people think Barnes might kick on and deliver on his promise this season?

Are people planning on the hokey-cokey big hitter mid/fwd swapping for captaincy? Or sticking with Salah + one other captain option. Or worry about that after gmwk 3?

And are most getting Son in from the start? Or too tempted by Mahrez or Sancho?

Just so I’m not all questions - my current draft has Cavani, Son and Barnes as my most interesting options, but obvs unsure about Barnes.

Also like the look of Demarai Gray as an early season punt, but I’m a Blue, so that might be misplaced enthusiasm.

Leicester have possibly played a blinder in the transfer market. Having watched Daka yesterday I'm now much less confident in picking the starting Leicester attack in FPL as he is very much an option to start.

He is on the face of it a direct threat to Vardy but there are loads of options and variations for Rodgers with Barnes Nacho Maddison Daka Vardy. This is as complex to pick as the United attack really right now.

(Soumare could well be another amazing buy - too cheap for the big 4 to consider I imagine)

Feel vaguely guilty about this as someone who has been pushing Barnes heavily but he is now on the back burner for me unless he shows great form in the next two - yesterday was just a run around really.

It was a big injury and he may take time to get up to speed and like Maddison I think the pattern is mostly of bursts of form than consistency to date. Prepared to wait for first sign and leap immediately then.

Also Daka may well be PL ready - think that could reshape Leicester attack and now waiting to see how it works.

          You are overthinking.
He’s been training for weeks and yesterday he was really good too. Vardy eas awful
And leicester will not play with 3 strikers of daka, vardy and nacho. Barnes is the only LW they got.

I guess I was just asking to hear other people’s opinions. I think he’s a good pick and is flying under the radar slightly.

Thanks for the replies, Jacky Boy and Pingissimus.

Just watched Daka’s goal. Great assist from Albrighton too. I thought Leicester were on the cusp of greatness last season. Europa was a decent result though in my opinion.

Planning to do the same with Havertz> Son (Gw2). But makes more sense to start with Son.

17.5 on Havertz and Mahrez for the start of the season seems like a lot of dough to be tied up in players that aren’t certainties.

I suppose if you’re sure then Palace at home is a great opening fixture.

What do you think of my ‘hypothetical’ 5 City squad…?

    Ederson
    Dias / White / Coady
    KDB / Grealish / Raphinha / Sarr
    Kane / Bamford / Toney

    Sanchez / Lowton / Janssen / Harrison

Hopefully this squad should be able to cover the fact I won’t be able to make any transfers.

This is what I currently have set up as my team, however if the transfers do not go through I will switch it to something a bit more standard.

    1. Third Eye Vision
      • 13 Years

Don’t forget that the first two transfers you will have to make will be ‘forced transfers’ so that might prevent you hopping on early season favourites/price rises etc.

I know the risks hence why I’ve tried to pick a strong 15.
I’ve gone for Coady + Janssen because they’re club captains and triple Leeds attack as that’s where I believe the best value is.

The only way I will ever go with this is if I have 5 sky blue shirts in my team on the Friday.

    A Digne (442)

Highly tempted by Benhrama. Such a fun player to watch. Might be on pens.

Playing 352 with henderson as GK.
Have 3x bench fodders. None of them playing.
Don’t know it worth downgrading henderson to sanchez to have a 4.5 defender (white/fofana) or not.
I may never start him tho

Varane could transform United defence instantly as Dias did at City and VVD did at Liverpool but with doubt over Shaw and no preseason to gel the system I'd go elsewhere personally. Feels more like a WC play to me.

Double United defence is a definite play especially with the difficulty in picking starters up top.

I'm also very possibly going with a 5.0 keeper. Varane will improve them of course but don't rate the midfield axis and still dubious enough to wait for form to develop. Quite possibly just wrongly influenced here by experience with United defence last season.

Prefer Meslier for saves right now and Pickford on fixtures (banking on the Rafa effect there)

Watched the Leeds/Real Betis game on You Tube earlier. Bamford and Raphinia all look sharp. Junior Firpo looks a great signing from Barca. Put a very nice ball in for the Bamford's goal. One to watch.

Yes...something I'm considering if he is going to deliver consistent attacking returns in a team that likes to attack with the bonus of clean sheets.

Thing is we seem to have plethora of good picks in defense line, hard to pick...
TAA, Robertson, Dias, Stones, Shaw, Firpo, Ayling, Digne, Coufal, Tierney, White and then probably I still missed some decent options.

Am I mad to pay on 3 Leeds Attackers?
Base on the last season performance, it is still have a great value.

            Sanchez (Steele)
            TAA Robo Shaw (4.0) (4.0)
            Salah Burno Raphinha Harrison (Brownhill)
            Bamford Watkins Toney

            0.0 itb

Great first 11, but weak bench.
Should I downgrade Shaw to 5.0 def, and buy one 4.5 def for sub/rotate?
Is Brownhill good enough? He is set piece taker.

I'm trying to remember if in previous seasons people went for two 12m assets? I can't think that they did. It's usually been 12m + 9.5 - 10m asset in midfield has it not? Shoe horning Bruno in doesn't feel right.

I like my team without Bruno, seems strong in all areas.
I'm going to hate it the moment Bruno bags in two 12+ points hauls in a row.

      It's a gamble going without.

Would love a little bit of tinkering from someone

    Currently on, with 0.5 ITB

    Sanchez Bachmann
    TAA, Shaw, Digne, Ayling, Fofana
    Salah, Fernandes, Raphina, Gibbs-White, Bissouma
    DCL, Cavani, Toney

good to go? or would you...

    A) swap front 3 to Antonio, Watkins, Wellbeck and Go Pickford + 4.0, downgrade Digne to 4.5 / 5.0 e.g. White/Doherty leaving me 3.0/3.5 ITB allowing me to upgrade Gibbs-White to a 7.5/8.0 e.g. Greenwood, Pepe or Grealish

    B) just do the keeper swap for Pickford + 4.0

    C) Keep the team I have already

    D) Toney out for Wellbexk, allowing Gibbs-White to Fraser

FYi option A would look like

    Pickford 4.0
    TAA, Shaw, White, Ayling, Fofana
    Salah, Fernandes, Raphina, Grealish, Bissouma
    Antonio, Watkins, Wellbeck

May ditch Fofana for e.g Dier once I know more about starters

Would really appreciate any thoughts on this Sunday morning.....

    Thanks

Doesn’t look bad at all imo. Considering your first draft, I’d probably try ti fit some Villa asset(s) there.

Maybe save 0.5 on the GK position + DCL to Antonio + downgrade a 4.5 defender to fodder —> should allow a fodder mid to Buendia.

Think the team would look better! Imo…

It raises an interesting question of who the Arsenal defence will be. You could get a cheap double up on a defence without European distractions. Which two from White, Holding and Gabriel play? Tierney could be an option too. I know they've become mediocre but they are still a big club.

Thank you Circusmonkey. I've just swapped Holding for Fofana. Arsenal have CHE and MCI game weeks 2 and 3, but beyond that they have a potentially nice run of opponents. Might bring Holding back gw4 if he and White are starters.
        cheers

So it has come down to this, 2 of Bruno, De Bruyne, and Salah

Yes you can get all 3 in but at the expense of every other position.

I'm leaning towards Salah and Bruno because of set pieces, less injury prone and more nailed

Anyone want to change my mind?

The caveat you mentioned sums up the issue with 3 premiums.....it is at the expense of every other position.

Not considering KDB at all given his recent injury at the Euros after coming back from an injury.....plus City's tough opening fixtures.

2 premiums can put out a good team. Myself I may just go with Salah as a premium and have a more balanced team all round

Not really compromising the whole side

It's pretty much a straight choice between KdB and TAA given that it's very possible to put out a balanced side with Mo Bruno Son and TAA

    A) Bruno + Tierney (4-4-2)

    B) Bamford + Sancho (3-4-3)

Feel like Bamford is too ignored around here.
