Fantasy Football Scout and Sky Sports Fantasy Football to join forces in 2021/22 1

Fantasy Football Scout are delighted to be partnering with Sky Sports Fantasy Football this season – bringing you even more content on the popular, free-to-enter game.

Our resident experts Luke Williams and Niall Murphy have already uploaded a two-part 2021/22 Sky season preview and will be recording every week throughout the season so you get the very best insight and advice.

This week, Niall – who has finished 3rd, 15th, 17th and 42nd in a stellar career – reveals his first draft and strategy to picking a Sky team for the crucial first three Gameweeks of the season, before the Overhaul kicks in.

Pre-Overhaul Strategy

Before we get into the detail of my team, I believe there are a few pretty fundamental principles to picking a successful pre-overhaul team in Sky Fantasy Football:

1.       Forget the rest of the season

With the presence of the Overhaul – which is effectively a forced wildcard after three Gameweeks – remember, you’re only picking a team for the first few games. Even if you like the look of Teemu Pukki at 7.7m or Billy Gilmour at 6.9m, with Norwich rock bottom of the fixture ticker, you’re effectively gambling on them to score goals and dominate the ball against Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City. I’ll leave you to price that up with your local bookie, but it’s a punt that I’ll not be touching with a bargepole. My advice would be to avoid teams like Norwich, Leeds, Wolves and Burnley until after the Overhaul, with some exceptions, such as a cheap goalkeeper or even Raphinha (8.3m).

On the flip side, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Leicester lead the way at the other end of the fixture ticker and all boast proven and good-value Sky assets.  What’s not to like?

2.       Captains are king… And one of them is probably Egyptian

Of arguably more importance in Sky than the difficulty of fixtures, is the way they fall within the Gameweek. Looking at the matches, Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham/Leicester and Arsenal/Brentford stand out as being either optimal or required assets for early-season captaincies. This is illustrated by the very first game of the season where Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted Brentford take on Arsenal in the only game on Friday night.

Now, neither Arsenal nor Brentford have a stunning set of opening fixtures, coming in at 18th and 9th respectively in the fixture ticker, but you almost certainly want to start the season with one of their players. That’s because you are able to bank double points for simply having an asset on matchday 1 – meaning Arsenal and Brentford have an effective 4-for-3 advantage over other teams. Bruno Fernandes (11.8) and Mohamed Salah (11.9) or another Liverpool asset look favourites for the armband on at least a couple of the early-season matchdays.

3.       Regular starters or bust

Put simply, you only have three Gameweeks to amass points. If there are doubts over a player’s fitness or security of starts after pre-season, at this stage of the campaign, I would encourage you to body swerve. The last thing you want to be doing is picking a player who either misses the first two or three games, leaving you pointless, or who forces your hand to make transfers in Gameweek 1, with only a limited number of weeks to compensate for the use of a transfer.

Of course, injuries happen, and my advice would be to consider each swap early doors on merit. I’ll give you an example. Two seasons ago, Alisson was crocked in the very first game of the season against Norwich. Transferring him out at that stage gave 3 Gameweeks for another goalkeeper to gain enough points to justify a transfer. I assessed that to be worth the move and his replacement, Jordan Pickford, kept two clean sheets out of three. Great. Now, if the injury happened in Gameweek 2, I’d be less inclined to throw a transfer at it, and would barely consider it if in Gameweek 3.

They’ve spent the whole summer saying he won’t leave because he loves them too much (& also that ESR is signing for them because Villa are a bigger club than the Arsenal) I think they are just embarrassed about being wrong more than anything.

Unless they sign a direct replacement for gigi, I see Liverpool lining up a 3 man midfield with Thiago, Henderson and fabinho with Jota coming in when they go 4231

The one recent season Hendo has managed noticeably more than 50% starts is the 19/20 season. Is he going to improve on that now? If he's not past his peak he's wobbling on the top of it. Thiago is in much the same category.

Think they will be pushed to put out that 3 on a regular basis.

Yep there are more bodies to come in buI wouldn't have it as an area of strength for Liverpool as at now and would take their 19/20 line up every day over this one.

              Need to sign there imo

Had him in an earlier draft as more of a differential pick. Should be starting the first few games due to injuries to other players. Good pick I think. The price put me off as I felt like it messed up my squad structure a bit.

Looks like a great option to start. No Rashford due to surgery and I believe Martial is out for the start. Without European football at the start of the season as well it will give Cavani lots of rest and most likely the first few games are all his in the 9. I don't see many people going for him maybe due to the options that are a little bit cheaper having great fixtures as well.

Cavani will have his minutes managed, similar to last season.

Thus I wouldn't classify him as a guaranteed starter. Tbh the only attacker that is pretty much guaranteed at this stage is Bruno

I'd like to think Bruno and Sancho will play every week with 2 of Greenwood, Martial, Cavani and Lingard to be rotated for the striker and wing position.
I would love to start with both Greenwood and Cavani but theres just no knowing what will happen when lineupes come out.

Yeah same boat as me, allows me to have Salah and Son also. Just a bit unsure on my forward set up currently Antonio and Watkins. Jiminez looks good to jump on GW4. Waiting on Nacho to see how he will go for game time. Not confident on Toney and Rodrigo from the get go when I can eliminate the risk for the first few gameweeks.

              Salah Son Sancho ESR
              Watkins Antonio
              (Foster Dele White Obafemi)

I like being deep on the bench with Dele coming into the side GW2 over ESR. The three interchangeable players atm being Target, Dele and ESR. Cannot decide how to spend those funds over the three players as yet.
Im sure those 3 players may be our main differences?

I like the Dele pick. In the friendlies, he's been playing largely on the left of a midfield 3 but shifts into a number 10 role and has been getting goal chances.
No Man City planned for GW2 v Norwich?

Good morning chaps! Can someone with some who understands statistics or is good at maths help me out please?

I am trying to figure out the best budget distribution between DEF, MID, and FWD based on value and points scored last season. I wanted to see how many points all defenders, mids, and forwards scored last season and use that to determine the best spread of funds across the 3 brackets. For argument sake, all defenders scored 6000pts, mids 10000pts, and fwds 9000pts (haven't calculated them yet). Therefore, based on the above hypothetical example total points, the budget distribution would be

    24% goes to DEF
    40% goes to MID
    36% goes to FWD
I feel like the above logic is only applicable if we were selecting the same amount of defenders, mids, and forwards though. What I struggle with is adjusting for the fact that we can select 5 DEFs, 5 MIDs, but only 3 FWDs. How am I best adjusting for this?

The same logic applies for the GK spot as well. Was trying to keep the example simpler. Once I have a better understanding of how to adjust for the different number of picks for each slot, I can apply the same logic for the GK slot.

Its not worth your time to look at this

This is over thinking. Look at players and decent price options not where you put the money overall in all the positions.

In the end their are multiple teams with different total prices in positions which are viable to do very well.

    4. Rochdale_Cowboy

A simple way would be to choose a formation. Pick fodder for your bench, then distribute the remaining cash in proportionality to the % you quoted. Don't forget th GK though.

I was hoping for this calculation to point me in the right direction of which formation is best though. I am on 3-4-3 at the moment, but for all I know 3-5-2 is more value-friendly, etc. That's why i wanted some science to make a decision on formation and budget spread haha.

The only budget allocation I stick to is to not allocate more than 9m for my 2 keepers.

Your team should be determined by the premiums you want and the players offering the best value for their position, regardless of how much they cost and what position they play.

Then after that fill the gaps in the rest of the team

Don’t forget that if you’re using this sort of approach, don’t look at the actual cost of the players - you need to look at cost above baseline.

      1. Third Eye Vision
        • 13 Years
        4 years, 4 months ago

You have to spend at least 4.0 on GK and DEF, and 4.5 on every MID and FWD.

So the minimum outlay is £64 million.

Your budget allocation is how you choose to spend the remaining £36 million.

        1. Third Eye Vision
          • 13 Years
          4 years, 4 months ago

So your percentages are a fraction of £36 million.

For each baseline value, subtract the minimum value from each actual value.

Tried to keep it simple. I’m not advocating any of this. Doesn’t seem intuitive or fun. If you don’t follow my explanation, I’m sure you could Google it.

I would say the baseline for defenders is 1x4.0 (at most) and 2x4.5, making the budget £35m or even even £34.5 if you don't like having a 4.0 defender. I don't personally, but I get many do.

Maybe one should do the same for keepers, so if you play 2x4.5 keepers the budget reduces by £1m further, or if you play 1x4.5 and 1x4.0 it reduces by £0.5.

    Im pretty close now

    Sanchez
    Cancelo Chilwell TAA
    Mahrez Salah Son Havertz Raphinha
    Toney Maupay

Yes for sure, but its a week by week basis and we have transfers. I am fully covered for captains in first 6 weeks and have some flexibility to move to anyone i need

E.g week 3-4 no Salah and get Kane
Or get Bruno + Sancho for Salah / Mahrez

All the 11 are picked as they are fully read to start week 1 and have had a proper pre-season ( Bar Havertz + Chilwell which im still on the fence for)

Im happy with the risk for the first 2-3 gameweeks

Maupay is underpriced and worth a 2-3 week trial now with Welbeck out.

Cancelo is also worth it from the start.

Do think you need at least 1 playing sub.

We've all been burned by Pep roulette before and there will be games when Cancelo or Mahrez doesn't start (or comes on as a sub for 1 pt). Havertz and Chilwell may also get rested now and then.

Your forward line does need more investment as well

Im more than ok for 2 weeks to have a 4.5mil forward getting some sub minutes and I have a 4mil defender who has the best chance of mins also

I hear the rotation risk, but its not going to be a thing for week 1-2 when city have no England players

Everyone here has Shaw - Cancelo is more likely to play week 1 imo

I think Villa's opening 3 fixtures are better hence the double up with Buendia and Watkins.

Without seeing how Utd line up, the only utd attacker that is nailed is Bruno. Anyone else can be rotated at any time and Sancho is too much of an unknown at this stage (eg could well be eased into the league slowly as a sub)

Alongside TAA, which of the following defenders would you go for?

    A. Chilwell, Ayling, White, 4.0
    B. Shaw, Ayling, White, Veltman
    C. Coufal, Dunk, Ayling, White
    D. Shaw, Dunk, Ayling, 4.0

Really shoes that you can afford a great midfield without Trent/Robbo!
I would definitely love a team structure like this at some point in the season, but not GW1 surely?
Liverpool have arguably the best starting 6-8 fixtures. You wouldn't want to miss out on Trent , specially when a lot are considering doubling up with Robbo.

Also think Grealish might not be nailed on in the beginning.

What do you think about just a small change that would make it more template but safer. Grealish Digne -> Buendia Robbo?

He still has a long contract, he is fine. He came over on a small contract from Czech league - had a solid season plus good euros. Just wants a bit if parity with rest of squad.

If he keeps performing at his level he’ll get it in Jan I reckon. He’s only been here 5 mins!
