It’s dull ache; a nagging undeniable sickness in the pit of the stomach that soon disperses on distraction, but makes its return every time my mind recalls this evening’s events at St James’ Park. All this couldn’t be more self-inflicted.

Those up early enough to take in this morning’s “Preamble” will be aware of the cause. Faced with fielding at least one Liverpool defender against Newcastle, I decided to “be clever” and field both Konchesky and Kyrkiakos on the premise that an out-of-form Newcastle would splutter against a Liverpool defence that, on current form, was the most miserly in the league.

I duly played both my Liverpool defenders and chose to bench Andy Carroll to back my hunch to the hilt. That was undoubtedly my worst decision of my Fantasy season. You surely don’t need me to go over the facts of tonight’s 3-1 result; please spare me from that…

While there was some logic behind it, I chose to ignore the fact that, before tonight’s game, Carroll had scored a goal or an assist in 8 of Newcastle’s last 9 games. On these very pages, in this very column a few days ago, I noted how Carroll had returned points and kept Newcastle afloat despite their dismal form. Somehow, for some reason, I chose to ferret these facts away in a cupboard in my head and drown out the screams with my “clever” new plan.

Such an error was overdue to be fair. I haven’t felt the sting of such an mistake this season so far and it’s a condition that most Fantasy Managers have to suffer once or twice in a campaign. The trick now is to lock it away, somehow rediscover the hunger and move on. I can hope for a miracle from the rest of my team, a freak bout of flu to bring Carroll off my bench, but the cold facts are that I’m staring at a big red arrow and my worst points tally of the season.

This all comes a week after I’d climbed to my best FPL ranking and closed the gap on rival Granville to 3 points. I don’t need bloody Alanis Morissette to point out the irony of it all. It’s no coincidence either.

The real problem is I can’t even put it down as a “lesson learned”; I’m pretty sure I’ve had this lesson ten times over the years, filed it under “common sense” and forgotten it.

Two things about this game we play are clear to me tonight. Firstly, it’s bloody hard to recall lessons learned and recall mistakes from the past – particularly the one that states “Never follow a good Gameweek by trying to be a smartarse”.

Secondly, and perhaps most poignant of all, Fantasy Football is a painful game when you’ve only got yourself to blame.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lot's of Liverpool defenders about my league. I have Reina in nets but still decided to stick with Carroll. Reina out next gameweek, far too over priced.

So do Man City, try picking the bones out of those sides regarding points. I captained Balotelli today and I'm sureplenty captained Torres and as I said all the Liverpool defenders. They don't inspire confidence.

Which option is best until the wildcard?

    1) Vidic + Dunn + Torres
    2) Vidic + MGP + Torres
    3) Strtel + Cahill + Torres

    I already have Konchesky

You can't call him the best in the FPL when he isn't even in the england squad regularly. He's a good player but best? Nooooo chance. Cole + Evra (barring this season so far) are far better players.

From a purely attacking perspective you'd have to consider Glen Johnson too.
Baines, Evra, A Cole are all obviously very good but players come in and out of form and you'd have to say Cole is the best both defensively and aatacking-wise of the lot.

Best left backs in the Premier League this season:
                  Cole
                  Enrique
                  Baines

Wrong end of the stick AP and everyone else.

I called him the best full back in the FPL, who said anything about England, or Cole or Evra. I don't think he should get anywhere near the England team, his defending isn't up to scratch.

He is the best full back in the Fantasy Premier League.

              😛

People see an FPl assist and mistake it for some creative influence on the overall game.

Lots of times its given as a 2 yard pass and the goalscorer goes on an unbelievable run to score. (eg RVP to fabregas solo goal v Spurs last year)
              This is what i mean.

not sure why nolan stood out either, he really did do nothing else. meireles was the best player on the pitch for me but was never in with a sniff in a 3-1 loss. i probably would have given carroll the 2 or the 3 even thugh i though he was a complete donkey for most of the game. that makes no sense but his contributions for each goal were vital. just thought his all round game was pretty woeful. he spent the entire fist half mis-controlling, passing to lucas/ meireles and diving up against kyrgiakos

Doesn't matter if he did touch it (I don't think he did based on the replays). His touch had to have significantly altered the speed or direction of the ball for Carroll not to get the assist.

I agree. The Young assist is another problem. Just because he got the ever so slightest of touches on the ball he got the assist. Anyone who saw that would credit Albrighton with the assist, and deservedly so.

Ouch Mark, a case of pushing your luck. Double up on defenders is quite risky anyway, doubling up on Liverpool who are appalling away from home against a side that has plenty of goals in it is just well.... I've benched Carroll too many times myself, it hurts.
Not that I haven't made some daft errors already this gameweek.

    Sorry Mark but HA! 😛
Knew all your anti-Toon schtick would bite ya once we had Barton Nolan and Tiote ruling the roost in midfield. The absence of Barton and Tiote in particular have been the main reason for the downturn in form. With those two working like Victorian children the defence (feeble as it is without Williamson and Coloccini) is well protected.

Oh I'm quite aware that Newcastle are fallible - but there had been an incredible amount of 'Newcastle are suddenly shite' stuff going on.

Aye, think that was more blind panic that investments might suddenly be screwed. Tiote was magic again today even if Barton gets the lions share of credit. Barton: Awful scroutbag but bloomin' good footballer on his day.

Considering I was always going to bring in Torres, there is nothing to rue. All I need is Drogba to score 4 more points than Jara and it was worth it...

Torres should score well over the next few weeks, especially in the home games.

This is an example where the assist rules are screwed up. Young barely touched the ball. The true assist came from Albrighton's excellent cross. Young really had nothing to do with it, but his touch was the last touch.

I kind of agree tbh, if it was a defender getting a touch that small then the Albrighton assist would stand in 100 cases out of 100.
