It’s dull ache; a nagging undeniable sickness in the pit of the stomach that soon disperses on distraction, but makes its return every time my mind recalls this evening’s events at St James’ Park. All this couldn’t be more self-inflicted.

Those up early enough to take in this morning’s β€œPreamble” will be aware of the cause. Faced with fielding at least one Liverpool defender against Newcastle, I decided to β€œbe clever” and field both Konchesky and Kyrkiakos on the premise that an out-of-form Newcastle would splutter against a Liverpool defence that, on current form, was the most miserly in the league.

I duly played both my Liverpool defenders and chose to bench Andy Carroll to back my hunch to the hilt. That was undoubtedly my worst decision of my Fantasy season. You surely don’t need me to go over the facts of tonight’s 3-1 result; please spare me from that…

While there was some logic behind it, I chose to ignore the fact that, before tonight’s game, Carroll had scored a goal or an assist in 8 of Newcastle’s last 9 games. On these very pages, in this very column a few days ago, I noted how Carroll had returned points and kept Newcastle afloat despite their dismal form. Somehow, for some reason, I chose to ferret these facts away in a cupboard in my head and drown out the screams with my β€œclever” new plan.

Such an error was overdue to be fair. I haven’t felt the sting of such an mistake this season so far and it’s a condition that most Fantasy Managers have to suffer once or twice in a campaign. The trick now is to lock it away, somehow rediscover the hunger and move on. I can hope for a miracle from the rest of my team, a freak bout of flu to bring Carroll off my bench, but the cold facts are that I’m staring at a big red arrow and my worst points tally of the season.

This all comes a week after I’d climbed to my best FPL ranking and closed the gap on rival Granville to 3 points. I don’t need bloody Alanis Morissette to point out the irony of it all. It’s no coincidence either.

The real problem is I can’t even put it down as a β€œlesson learned”; I’m pretty sure I’ve had this lesson ten times over the years, filed it under β€œcommon sense” and forgotten it.

Two things about this game we play are clear to me tonight. Firstly, it’s bloody hard to recall lessons learned and recall mistakes from the past – particularly the one that states β€œNever follow a good Gameweek by trying to be a smartarse”.

Secondly, and perhaps most poignant of all, Fantasy Football is a painful game when you’ve only got yourself to blame.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If Ferdinand's out for a month, do we think Elmo will return to the starting XI? I've been meaning to dump him for weeks, but might have to hold off.

Well the jug is broken no point worrying about that now - go for good solid long term picks like Carroll and you should be reet.

oooh it's complete gas. (I'm analysing as I read btw)

"...and second, Fabregas is the perfect example of a player who needs a team and formation built around him to succeed. He is a talented individual but clearly not as good as some think; descriptions of him as the league’s best player are vastly exaggerated."

I'm pretty sure he first blew up as part of a team built around Thierry Henry, claiming 20-odd assists in Henry's last season.

"I’ve long been of the opinion that he needs to play in a midfield 3 with at best one protecting him so he doesn’t have to do any real groundwork for the team. This isn’t a swipe to say he only performs in a 3; it’s a statement that I don’t believe he isn’t good enough to run a top level midfield in a midfield 2."

Arsenal didn't even play 4-3-3 until last season, was he shit up until then? no.

"With a clearly defined role and the benefit of an objective, Fabregas should, by reputation, at least have dominated one big game of importance in the last 4 years. Not since 2006 has he done so"

I'm pretty sure he tore apart current European Champions, AC Milan on their on patch in 2008. Wasn't too bad against united in that 2-1 victory later that year. Since then, Arsenal have just been shit in big games, can't pile all the blame on one player.

I'd keep reading, but I'm bored of the tripe.

hehe that's fair enough. I've read a few good arsenal fans reactions to it. Some things i definitely agree with though, like the luducrous media adulation of Clichy, Song and Verm. London based media...

I like how he links Clichy to be a blog dissing Clichy (rightly btw, he's been shit).

Song is one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, he's been below par this season because he's not been playing there this season. I get why, but it's the most frustrating thing ever.

lol and the Vermaelen quote about being better than Vidic is from a random poster on an Arsenal blog. must have taken your man yonks to pull that quote up.

Disagree. We've beaten them 5 (i thought it was 6?) games on the trot in all comps playing 433/451. I don't see a reason to change that. The last game we lost to them, Berba started.

Not that i'm blaming him for that! It's just the 442 doesn't suit playing arsenal. You need to match them in midfield ,soak up their pressure and hit them on the break in my opin.

    Quick question

How many weeks has your weekly rank been over 1 million?
    My answer is 6.

Thinking of setting up a comp for a knockout for the 2nd half of the season. A few of the teams in the top 10 have never been over 1 million weekly.

Not really, bottom 5 getting knocked out each week.

In my one half the teams could get knocked out in week 1.

Jsut after getting 92pts the week before, thats why i can understand where mark is comming from about success can make you do stupid things.

This Carroll assist has nothing in common with the Bale one. The Bale one came from a parry by the keeper which has it's own paragraph

"If a goalkeeper does not have control of the ball and parries a shot or drops a cross or the ball rebounds off the woodwork, the attacking player shooting or crossing the ball receives the assist if a goal directly ensues."

The Carroll and Konchesky ones comes under this paragraph of the assist rules

"If during this pass, an opposing player significantly alters the speed or direction of the ball, then no assist is given except if this intervention directly results in an own goal."

IMO the Carroll one is an assist and the Konchesky one is not.

for me it's very simple keeping other instances in mind. If the defender got the touch after Carroll then it shud be Carroll's if not and Ranger got the last touch then it's ranger's.

I dunno, you would of thought that when they played Chelsea but he managed to get an assist and could of got a goal also. He scored there last year iirc, Birmingham is a tough place to go, Newcastle aren't travelling well so can't see him doing much, a risk but could see 6 points max, I can handle that.

He was also very close to scoring on a hard down-ward header from a Meireles corner which would have equalized. And was targeted once or twice on set pieces / corners that didn't pan out. He's clearly a big target from set pieces.

OK first half by the Greek, poor second half. He actually dealt with Carroll OK and squared up to him a few times. Goal 1 was Skrtel fault (not to mention offside) and Goal 3 was Lucas fault (not closing down Carroll) so the big Greek really wasn't responsible for any goals. Wasn't his best game by any means but wasn't poor.

a few points all together so i will neevr have to keep repeating the same odd points.
agger played lb last season when insua and aurelio were injured, he had to play there. this season agger played lb when aurelio was injured and insua was on his way out the club. again he had to play lb. as soon as konchesky signed agger was replaced at lb then got injured before he had the chance to compete for a cb place (although pre-season suggests hodgson prefers skrtel and carragher, NOT kyrgiakos).
there are only 3 circumstances when kyrgiakos plays:
1 when glen johnson and agger are injured.
2 when agger and carragher are injured.
3 when the game is against stoke or kevin davies

Those are fair points in theory but you aren't taking into account Hodgson's praise of Kyrgiakos in practice.

He has compared him to John Terry and Tony Adams and after a particularly fine Europa League game, has stated that either REINA or KYRGIAKOS would be stand in captains while Carragher / Gerrard were injured. That's some high praise for someone who you say loses his spot completely when Agger is fit.

What has Agger done for Hodgson in the Premier League and Europa League? NOTHING.

Hodgson proved at Fulham he likes to stick to a settled team and I can't imagine the Greek losing his spot to the half-fit Agger anytime soon.

he's a good leader that's why he was considered for the captaincy. he was also only considered because hodgson knew gerrard's injury was short term enough that kyrgiakos had a secure place in the side until gerrard returned. history suggests agger is more likely to play alongside skrtel when fit.

Konchesky lumped it forward, it hit Campbell on the back and it then fell to Kuyt who scored (albeit with the help of a deflection off Taylor).

Kolorov , a no brainer of a decision. Hes in arguably the best team in the league and most likely a season long started.

I am a stupid idiot, I played N'Zogbia over Adam... I had a bad feeling about it before hand, should have followed my gut on this one.. Just thought Everton might leak a goal or two as they have been lately and Stoke would be hard to crack at home, as they also have been lately! Oh well, I guess this is what makes the fantasy game what it is....

There's no doubt that Hughton didn't deserve to be sacked, but he's being made out to be the best manager ever by the media right now, and he's clearly not that. He got praised heavily for getting Newcastle out of the Championship with ease, but in reality you had a side that was far too good for the Championship.
