Scout Notes

Is ‘out of position’ Ferran Torres worth the rotation risk in FPL?

We begin our Scout Notes of the weekend’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) matches with analysis of Manchester City’s thrashing of Arsenal.

For a briefer summary of Saturday’s action, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

MANCHESTER CITY 5-0 ARSENAL

  • Goals: Ilkay Gundogan (£7.3m), Ferran Torres (£7.0m) x2, Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m), Rodri (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Jesus, Bernardo Silva (£7.0m), Jack Grealish (£8.0m), Torres, Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m)
  • Bonus: Jesus x3, Torres x2, Gundogan x1

‘OOP’ TORRES – RISK v REWARD

£7.0m for an out-of-position midfielder playing up front for the joint-top-scoring Premier League side seems like a no-brainer on paper but Ferran Torres (£7.0m) was owned by fewer than 3% of FPL managers ahead of Gameweek 3, such is the week-to-week wariness around Pep Guardiola and his fondness for rotation.

Two poacher’s goals, an assist and an 18-point haul on Saturday will see his ownership inevitably rise (over 100,000 managers have since snapped him up) but he’s still in differential territory ahead of Gameweek 4.

So is he worth the risk? First, the pros.

City’s inability to sign a striker in the transfer window has left them short up top and if they fail to add to their ranks in the next few days, Torres will continue to see plenty of game-time through the middle.

He’s even someone Guardiola has previously mentioned as being one of the options for the centre-forward role this season and there were further comments from the City boss yesterday on the subject:

“Last season Ferran played exceptionally well as we saw in terms of his numbers – goals and assists. In this position he makes a movement like the best strikers in behind, moving incredibly well. His movement is similar to Jamie Vardy.

“He is very young. Manchester City did a great job buying him for a great price. He is a good finisher and had a goal was disallowed last week, when the finish was perfect.

“I’m very pleased with his movements, work ethic, and he has learned many things as we saw today – we are pleased on many, many levels.” – Pep Guardiola on Ferran Torres

The joy that Gabriel Jesus (£8.5m) is experiencing as a right-winger – he claimed his third assist in two Gameweeks when setting up Ilkay Gundogan’s (£7.3m) headed opener – also seemingly diminishes the competition up front in the short term.

But the start of the UEFA Champions League after the September international break looms large, something that will inevitably see the rotation step up a gear after three successive league starts for Torres.

We still have Kevin De Bruyne (£12.0m) and Phil Foden (£7.9m) to come back into the fold, too, the former in particular having moonlighted as a ‘false nine’ in 2020/21.

Foden is a good example of what we might expect from Torres in FPL. Last season, the England international started only 17 fixtures and made 11 substitute appearances. Despite a cluster of ‘one-pointers’ off the bench, he still averaged 4.8 points per match – better than the likes of regular starters Raphinha (£6.5m) and Mason Mount (£7.5m).

So owning Torres will bring its rewards but will require a) the nerve to ride out the one-pointers when they inevitably occur and perhaps crucially b) at least one strong, starting substitute to come in whenever Guardiola does his worst. Given the premium options we’re all trying to cram into our sides, that might prove tricky.

CITY MISCELLANY

A second successive attacking return as a substitute for Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m) perfectly encapsulates the rollercoaster nature of owning City assets: benchings can happen out of the blue but attacking returns can still easily arrive in a short cameo.

Mahrez created three big chances during his brief time on the pitch, while Raheem Sterling (£11.0m) racked up 10 penalty box touches and two big chances in half an hour.

The points were spread out again, with seven of the eight City midfielders/forwards who featured against the beleagured Gunners delivering an attacking return – Sterling being the exception.

And at the back, City’s only real scare came when a nonchalant Ederson (£6.0m) almost gifted Arsenal an early goal.

The best defence of 2020/21 have conceded only one big chance so far this season, picking up where they left off last year.

TOP OF THE SEASON TICKER, BOTTOM OF THE TABLE

Image

Arsenal are top of our Season Ticker over the next eight Gameweeks, with a favourable run of matches starting in Gameweek 4.

They are also rock-bottom of the Premier League table, goalless and having shipped nine goals in their opening three matches of 2021/22.

There’s been precious little to encourage FPL investment so far but there are mitigating circumstances: the Gunners have arguably just faced two of the best sides in the division, have had their start to the campaign blighted by a coronavirus outbreak, have yet to see arguably their best two centre-halves – Ben White (£4.4m) and Gabriel (£4.5m) – playing in tandem and have been missing Thomas Partey (£5.0m) in the last few weeks.

“We have some players here and hopefully we can get some players back as well. We missed a lot of players in recent weeks, hopefully some of them will be back in decent shape after the international break. It is time to reflect, to look in the mirror, each of us, and try to change the dynamic straight away because we need to pick up results.” – Mikel Arteta

The opening-day Brentford defeat was miserable but it’s worth remembering that they recorded more shots than any other side in Gameweek 1, with the absence of their three first-choice strikers a contributing factor in their failure to put away any of those chances.

Mikel Arteta’s troops were also among the form sides of 2021 before the start of this season; it’s unwise to disregard them completely over the next eight Gameweeks (the battering of West Brom reserves in midweek did illustrate their potential against the lesser lights) but few of us will be considering the double/triple-ups that such a fixture run would usually invite.

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker (Zinchenko 46), Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Rodrigo, Gundogan, Bernardo (Sterling 58), Grealish, Torres, Jesus (Mahrez 62).

Arsenal XI: Leno, Cédric Soares, Chambers, Holding, Kolasinac, Tierney, Ødegaard, Smith Rowe, Xhaka, Saka (Elneny 46), Aubameyang (Lacazette 59).

Mark sold 30 points in players this week. Even the content creators were saying after his 3 moves what a good , out of the box, idea. I feel for him but not the guys who blindly followed him. For a change, the logic of a big hitter up front was sound, but the remaining argument he put forward was not so.
I just don't understand why he did not wait a week when 2 ft's covering the international break would have been wiser IMO.

I agree. I think it was an aggressive move which is fine but the timing was better for next week. Would've just done Mahrez > Raphinha as he was planning and then take 2 FTs into the IB.

If he rolled his side he would have been on plus 70 points with a few to go. He still got 44 points with 4 to play.

I'm a big fan of Mark, and I play in a similar way (in terms of trying to get ahead of bandwagons/taking risks) but taking a hit to bring in any forward against Liverpool (top 3 defence) is a pretty bad idea, although as always it -could- have worked

Not sure where Mark features on HOF, but if analysing/following managers I'd advocate focusing on players with top 100 hof rank, these managers have proven quality with high level of experience.
Apologies to Mark if he falls I to this category

He's 18th in the HOF, and has finished in the top 5k ten times and in the top 100 four times. Got the timing wrong this time though - bringing Lukaku in with those fixtures for a hit was a bit contrived.

He is in the top 100 HOF rank I think.

I really like Mark because he plays to win. A lot of these so-called elite managers can't win FPL imo because they don't take enough risks.

        Also why I like Lateriser.

He'll never win FPL taking a hit for Lukaku away to Liverpool and Mbeumo either. They need to be calculated risks taken slowly over 38 weeks.

      It just luck isn’t it?

If his moves meant 30 points the other way he’s laughing and looks a genius.
Such fine lines, he picked good players and the only reason it backfired is luck.

          Getting ahead of the curve?
Chelsea have looked solid - it may have been a different story had James not been sent off, again another luck factor.

It looks worse because Torres hauled, a player who has blanked so far and is far from nailed.

We look at all of this in hindsight.

Lukaku not scoring away to Liverpool isn’t “bad luck”. Similarly selling Torres who all City fans tipped to start up front. Toney scoring wasn’t unlucky too it was due to be fair.

City fans tipping a player to start up top who’s blanked so far has no bearing on Pep picking him.
It’s a risk, similarly high risk with picking Lukaku away to Liverpool - the difference being the ‘hard fixture’ risk is offset favourably with the fact you know Lukaku is nailed.

Maybe Toney was due, but had yesterday finished 1-0 to Villa with another Toney blank it wouldn’t be unforeseeable would it?

He said himself he was blinded by Lukaku. Plus seems to have fallen into the trap many have done viewing Arsenal as a top side - myself included. I had ESR and Tierney gw1. Mark fell into the Arsenal facade of them being a top side by removing those city lads. It is the poorest Arsenal side and manager in living memory. Despite the nicer fixtures I think they will struggle in many of the upcoming games. Only reason to get Arsenal now is cheap FPL prices as they drop in price.

He's logic was sound. Can't trust Torres and Mahrez and good opportunity to get in Lakaku early. Not sure bringing in Sarr and Mbeumo as replacements was worth it. Long term may pay back.

He dodged a massive bullet by reneging on his “don’t start with Bruno GW1 because you won’t want to sell him, start with Mane instead because you will be ok with selling him” at the 11th hour

But eventually if you’re making these mad moves they come back to bite you more often than not

Yep; a contradiction in terms saying we won't want sell Bruno. He is basically saying Bruno will get points early on so don't get him. I know what he was trying to get across. I messed up just getting Salah to spread wealth. Done it again this week with Son, being stubborn not captaining Antonio.

I did not know the Bruno bit. I assume Mark meant easier to sell Mane instead of Bruno because of perception. People will say why sell Bruno, but would be OK with a Mane sale. It is similar to how posters are horrified and amazed that some benched Salah this game week. I benched Salah this week but it was him or Buendia for me. But perception affects the masses would scream at me 'you benched Salah'. Like they would scream at Mark 'you sold Bruno'. I suppose it is a mixture of perception, peer pressure and ego. You can even see the ego on this thread Mark being slammed for not being in the top 100 HOF 🙂 childish in a way.

Just drafted a GW4 wildcard and a GW8 wildcard. They only have 3 differences:

    Ronaldo - Lukaku
    Shaw - James
    Jota - Torres

Of course, things can change but the players Id want due to fixtures wont change much.

The issue before was that a wildcard in GW8 was logical as a change in team structure was needed but now that Ronaldo can essentially be a place holder for Lukaku, an early wildcard is far better than before imo

Unless you ONLY play the fixtures and nothing else at all - I don't see how you can make a GW8 WC now.
You can have a look and a little think about it, maybe make a provisional draft...
But, I guarantee you, by the end of GW7, your GW8 WC team will have changed loads since the one you've just made now.

Tempted to play WC but sensible play is to stick with team until week 7 as planned, captain Bruno and if fit transfer Ings to DCL* with free transfer. I have boxed myself in with Tsimikas and any move to get Jota means a hit which is a bit annoying if Firmino out.

What would you do with this squad?

    Sanchez
    TAA Coufal Shaw
    Salah Bruno Greenwood Raphinha Benrahma
    Ings* Antonio

    Foster Ayling Tsimikas Scarlett

I have basically the same team (Reguilon and White instead of Coufal and Ayling) and I'm thinking exactly the same as you. Ings to DCL and Bruno (c). Initially I was tempted by something like Ings + Bruno to Ronaldo + Torres -4 but selling Bruno for a hit could backfire in a big way.

I definitely don't think we can justify Wildcarding. The whole team has good fixtures.

I removed on wildcard. He could do well again for another while though. Himself and Sancho in the wings Ronaldo up top, Fernandes in the hole and Pogba in a midfield 2. Just means moving Pogba deep again and he needs someone better alongside him than McFred. Might only play this v the weaker teams which would mean Pogba/Sancho/Greenwood fighting for 2spots. That’s not even considering Martial/James/Lingard and Rashford when eventually fit. You’d imagine it will be Cavani replacing Ronaldo at #9 if subbing early.

The worst part of FPL is waiting for your captain (Son) to play the day after the Antonio captainers in your ML feeling smug with themselves and having to look at a 10-20 point between you and them overnight. 😀

          https://twitter.com/Linn_FPL/status/1431918909633011712?s=19

Only focuses on TAA but TL;DR Trent potentially even more dangerous and more of an AM (we saw this especially well in his assist for Mané last week).

Yup this backs up the eyes, that said this has been a trend that started towards the end of last season with Trent stepping more into central midfield but clear to see with Elliot there he does it even more

And I'm a nobody to question klopp but Salah for the last year or so is the only one of the forward guys who is basically doing all the creating and scoring. How long does he persist with forcing him wide to cater to Mane, we've seen what Salah does when he plays without mane and can be more central

It's been a tactical focus Klopp has used for over a year now. Got too predictable and one dimensional with Salah and mane coming inside and the fullbacks providing width. Now to mix it up he'll use Salah wide stretching the defenders and Trent crosses from deep or comes inside

Elliott is very good. I believe Salah/Mane will flourish with him in the side. They did against Burnley. The Red card killed the game yesterday as Chelsea had 10 men behind the ball for 45mins. He's certainly an interest option at £5.5m for a starting Liverpool attacking option..

Elliot clearly has talent but I thought yesterday there were some careless moves on his part.

I thought he was excellent considering he's an 18 year old boy playing his third game at this level. He has a lot to learn but had the perfect attitude and all the talent to be world class

My defence: TAA, Reguilon, Cash, Ayling, Tsimikas. 0 ITB.
Who sell first - Cash or Tsimikas?
And if Cash - should I buy 4.0m defender, 4.5m or 5.0m Def?

Wait for as long as you can

Security = Sarr fixtures and will start
                  Risk = Torres rotation
                  inconsistent = Gray but cheaper

Other options are Traore (great fixtures coming up), Fornals (form), Bowen (playing well, unlucky to not get returns), Lingard (if he moves to West Ham).

Has Ronaldo ever played for sustained periods with an attacking mid in the same team as him? Im probably overlooking someone but most of the mids he has played with are either defensive mids, deeplying playmakers or centre mids. Will be interesting to see how Bruno fares

Özil played for Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013. He got 19 league assists in his first season, 19 in his second and 16 in his third. He scored 19 league goals over that period.
