Learning from ‘The Great and The Good’ FPL managers – Gameweek 3

Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini-league winner Les Caldwell.

“Let the wild rumpus start!”

The FPL season has truly begun after two weeks of template inspired good scores, as the wild things of Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m), Harry Kane (£12.3m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) are stirring even the most cautious of manager into action.

With every passing day leading up to Gameweek 3, more big hitters arrived on the scene and like a roomful of kindergarteners on some sugar high, the FPL community charged around trying to find ways to fit them all into their squads.

Mark was the first to go with his well-documented Lukaku move to try and get an edge over the remaining members of The Great and The Good, and had to wait until Saturday evening as part of the Match of the Day challenge to find out his fate. It was ghoulish but great Googlebox viewing.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Tom Stephenson continues to eat up the competition and is still leader of The Great and The Good wild things, despite a red arrow, with a respectable 63 points thanks to a Michail Antonio (£7.9m) armband and the ever-consistent Mason Greenwood (£7.7m), who has now scored three more FPL points than Bruno Fernandes (£12.1m) over the season.

Yet, it was the other Tom, Deputy Freeman, who had the monster score this week with his patience in double United defence plus a Son Heung-Min (£10.1m) captaincy taking him to 72 points and a green arrow of over 250,000 places.

He has been less template than most this season, setting up with a 4-4-2 and owning three big hitters since the start with Son in his opening squad. He now has two free transfers and I wonder whether Bruno Fernandes will survive the international break?

Speaking of the Portuguese playmaker, he appears to be the cause of a disagreement between Fabio Borges and Magnus Carlsen. The Grandmaster came out on Twitter to announce the demise of Bruno but Fabio, along with Geoff Dance, went the other way and captained him this weekend.

Unfortunately, for the Hall of Fame number one this means he sits in the unusual position of bottom of this mini-league just below the Blackbox likely lads of Mark and Az.

Joe had his second green arrow in a row and sits comfortably in third place at 142,000. He was another one to captain Son, but has acted decisively to play his Wildcard – I wonder who else will follow his lead?

TRANSFERS

Antonio, Benrahma and Son among eye-catching FPL assets as De Bruyne returns 2

This is a summary of the transfers for this week:

  • Az – Benrahma, Livramento (White, Barnes)
  • LTFPL Andy – Bamford, Bissouma, Raphinha (Perica, Mahrez, Gundogan)
  • Fabio Borges – Benrahma (Jota)
  • Joe Lepper – Son, Benrahma (Salah, Barnes)
  • Geoff Dance – Benrahma, Regulion (White, Barnes)
  • FPL General – Calvert- Lewin, Benrahma (Grealish, Toney)
  • Les Caldwell – Coufal (White)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Son, Benrahma (Fernandes, Mahrez)
  • Mark Sutherns – Mbeumo, Lukaku, Sarr (Torres, Mahrez, Toney)
  • FPL Matthew – Dennis, Benrahma (Toney, Brownhill)
  • Neale Rigg – Duffy (Tsimikas)
  • Tom Freeman – Ayling (Tsimikas)
  • Tom Stephenson – Coufal, Raphinha (Barnes, Veltman)
  • Yavuz Kabuk – Dennis, Benrahma, Livramento (Toney, Brownhill, Veltman)
  • Zophar – Obafemi, Benrahma (Toney, Gilmour)

*transfers out are in brackets

After last week’s lull there was a frenzy of transfers this week.

Mark made the marquee signing of Lukaku for a hit, and as we all know, then had to sit through a Ferran Torres (£7.1m) brace during the watch along.

Another manager to take a hit was Andy. He suffered a similar fate with IIkay Gundogan (£7.3m) finally scoring on his departure from the squad, and it was intriguing to see him double down on Leeds United. Patrick Bamford (£7.9m) paid off this week and with a sea of good fixtures ahead I am sure he and Raphinha (£6.5m) will help him sail up the rankings.

Magnus and Joe took a proactive approach both snapping up Son and placing the captaincy on him, and the relief was palpable when his free-kick beat the flaying arms of Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m).

A move that may go under the radar is the transfer in of Emmanuel Dennis (£5.2m), who was brought in by both FPL Matthew and Yavuz, in the latter case for a hit. He has had eight shots, seven in the box, over the opening three games and could be a useful enabler if trying to afford budget-busting signings elsewhere.

TEMPLATE

Salah's role one to monitor in FPL as Alexander-Arnold continues forays infield 2

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

Goalkeepers: Sanchez (14), Steele (8)
Defenders: Alexander-Arnold (15), Shaw (13), Tsimikas (12), Ayling (10), Veltman (6)
Midfielders: Salah (14), Fernandes (14), Benrahma (14), Raphinha (9), Greenwood/Gilmour (5)
Forwards: Antonio (15), Ings (11), Toney (9)

The template is shifting slowly with Harvey Barnes (£6.9m) the high-profile departure replaced by Said Benrahma (£6.4m), who is the first bandwagon of the season, gaining nine new owners from The Great and The Good this week.

Antonio and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m) are now the only essentials with 100% ownership, as Magnus ditched Bruno and Joe moved out Mohamed Salah (£12.5m), but I suspect he may return in the Scoutcaster’s overhaul.

TEMPLATE BASHING

Salah and blanks again as Brighton defensive assets shine ahead of good run 3

There has been a fair degree of template bashing this year with the FPL community’s popular picks having one of the strongest starts to the season that I can ever remember.

I thought it worth poking The Great and The Good squads to see how template they are by using Live FPL, built by Ragabolly, which along with live rank updates, provides a comparison of your squad against the template. You can read how this is calculated here.

You can see below how the squads compare against the template, bearing in the mind the usual guidance is a 50-70% match to allow for a balance of ownership and differential.

Supporting the claim that this has been the year of the template is that Tom Stephenson, FPL Matthew and Zophar all have ratings in the nineties, classed as “very template”, and make up three of the top five managers so far.

Tom Freeman and Magnus are our resident mavericks classed as “moderately differential” with the lowest rating amongst the group.

I would suspect there will need to be more template busting over the coming weeks if any of them are going to catch Tom Stephenson. Ferran Torres anyone? Maybe, not for you Mark.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Cristiano Ronaldo's FPL price and position revealed
F

We’ve had a week of shocks and surprises, now it’s time to gather our thoughts and learn something from the rumpus.

Maybe it’s ok to embrace your wild thing, act out against the norm or the template and use your own power of imagination.

The number of options available has never been so great, be creative, the template has been sent to bed without any dinner, so let’s make sure we take advantage and bring in a few differentials to help us climb those ranks.

Anyway, that’s all from me for now and remember, don’t have nightmares.

For those effected by any of the topics raised in the above article then you can find me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/Greyhead19.

    Sanchez Steele
    Trent Shaw Duffy Livramento Amartey

Assuming DCL is fit and no new injuries, looks ok? Looking to rotate the cheap defenders based on fixtures. A bit torn on which keeper to pick.

Yeah could do - not sure if losing Duffy or Amartey should be the priority. You could always try Marcal or Coady instead of Semedo and then upgrade Benrahma to Raphinha (or Torres if funds allow). This new signing could eat a little into Benrahma's minutes and Leeds fixtures look good.

Please pick one from each question:

If I go for Ronaldo, then 2nd should be... (7.0m limit)

    A: Traore (Wol)
    B: Bergwijn
    C: Sarr
    D: Barnes (Lei)
    E: Someone else, who?

If I go for Lukaku, then 2nd should be... (8.0m limit)

    A: Grealish
    B: Greenwood
    C: Mount
    D: Torres

(Jota is not an option atm due to already having 3 of Liverpool, effing Tsimikas)

    1. Carlton P

Difficult without seeing your Team. Traore could be a punt given Wolves fixtures. Stay away from Barnes. Greenwood for me is probably keep if you have him but don't bring him in. Jota should be a very good option, and Torres is looking well worth the rotation risk if you have a bench.

    Advice appreciated chaps!

    Sanchez
    TAA, Dier, Coady/Marcal
    Salah, Jota, Torres, Raphinha
    Ronaldo, Antonio, DCL

    (Foster, Ayling, Livramento, Sissoko)

Wolves & Leeds seem to rotate perfectly for next 5 GWs and Wolves fixtures in particular are great. Jota could be Greenwood (waiting on Firmino news and how Utd set up). Still debating:

    - Torres & Dier -> Benrahma & Shaw
    - Torres & Raphinha -> Greenwood & Benrahma
    - Raphinha & Dier -> Gray & Shaw
    - Raphinha & Dier -> Benrahma & Matip

    Cheers!

Interesting viewpoint from an SA-based sports writer, Heinz Schenk

Cristiano Ronaldo's apparent fairy tale return to Old Trafford is being hailed as "sensational". Meanwhile, it's an overly sentimental signing that will do absolutely nothing to help Manchester United reclaim their former glory in the English Premier League. If anything, he might make them worse.

I've never been particularly fond of Manchester United. I can't really divulge my reasons for that, simply because I really don't know why, to me, they lack appeal. What I can state, with the utmost confidence, is that it's definitely not down to that parochial, almost "primal" hatred that sport fans all around the world hold for so many other teams across various codes. Man U is, well, just boring to me.

It's rather odd then that I find myself so occupied by Cristiano Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford, a "romantic" reunion that was officially confirmed on Tuesday. Why should I care?

After some careful thought, I realised - ironically - that as much as I became bored with United's domination of the Premier League under the peerless Sir Alex Ferguson, I now really crave them being genuine title contenders again. Let's be honest, sport loves its "villainous" teams. Ferguson's Red Devils were regularly gut-wrenchingly annoying to watch, but, boy, they were marvellously effective too.

Rational analysis would suggest that the majority of United fans, after what has been eight seasons of traumatic under-achievement due to the poor handling of the transition after Ferguson retired, would be really keen to see their team truly build on the platform laid by last season's imperfect but still encouraging second place finish in the league. Yes, they have still been wasteful in the transfer market, though the successful integration of Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes as well as the signings of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane suggest United don't just blindly splash their cash.

The current transfer window, which closed on Tuesday evening, seemed like a perfect opportunity to address the one missing piece of the puzzle: a string-puller in central midfield, a dynamic defender and creator that would bind the back division with what is, frankly, a surplus of attacking talent. And then came the news that the prodigal son had returned. This isn't a debate about the wisdom of signing an ageing attacker, who'll definitely leave a hole in the wallet. Ronaldo is undeniably a class act and he will score goals for United in this campaign - illustrated by him scoring over 80 goals in three seasons for Juventus in Serie A. He's going to send beanie sales skyrocketing and the club's engagement on social media platforms will reach dreamy levels.

But what United really needs is a winning team, and Ronaldo is not going to do much for them in that regard.

It really should be abundantly clear after his three-year stay in Turin - and to a lesser extent Portugal's Euro2020 campaign - he doesn't improve teams anymore. Juventus signed him after falling short in two Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017 - they never made it past the quarter-finals since. The Bianconeri had to build their tactical approach and team around him, not the other way round, and it didn't work.

What happens to Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood now? Why should short-termism take precedence over the continued development of two men who can deliver United glory in time?

That's the problem with superstars like Ronaldo: money and attention are diverted from the areas that are really important. Also, there's the nagging suspicion that Ronaldo might further obscure the debate over whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer really is the mastermind that will carry United back to the promised land. Granted, if he manages to incorporate his star veteran effectively, he will have silenced those doubters and solve a puzzle many believe is unsolvable - because Ronaldo, as a relatively static player off-the-ball, is perceived as a liability in an era of relentless movement and pressing. If he doesn't, it's perfectly plausible that many supporters will still indulge mediocrity.

In these times of instant gratification and entertainment, 20 league goals from a returning club legend is a far cooler narrative than a fourth place finish in the league because the other nine outfield players couldn't gel with the fulcrum. Ronaldo's signing is candy floss, a shameless confirmation that United's hierarchy remains focused on the patently unimportant things when the EPL really needs it to be the ruthless, pragmatic and winning douches of old.

    So what's your premium strategy?
    A. 2 rotating premiums based on fixtures
    B. 1 fixed ( probably Ronaldo/Salah) + 1 rotating premium
    C. 3 premiums and a cheap defence
    D. Something else?

I don't but CR7 is the postcode for Thorton Heath, just up the road from the Palace ground. I do hate Cantona though. RIP Paul Nixon.

Salah & Lukaku more or less fixed; think I can squeeze in Son & Trent for the moment too.

B with Lukaku/ (then one other, probably Ron depending on news, fitness etc, same goes with Bruno TBH)

Seen some really poor WC's with C and are WC'ing for the sake of it.

But Ronaldo and Lukaku rotate very nicely. so Salah is more likely to be fixed one

Can't go wrong with either. I'm prob going Lukaku, just, but I think both could get 2 attacking returns

Will Greenwood be good for the next three? Has the international break off and rashford not back for a few weeks yet. Do we still have some time left of him even with ronaldo arriving?

Not sure about next three, also wasn’t Greenwood selected for England and probably quite likely to play the final game vs Andorra. But he’s still a hold for me

He wasn’t selected for England. I don’t have him and have been punished by him week in week out and I’m wanting to bring him to enable ronaldo. Don’t fancy Torres all that much so Greenwood standing out most to me with the fixtures

Should be fine for the next three and then will look to get him out anyway.

Which premium striker(s) are you ultimately going for in GW4?

    A: Ronaldo
    B: Lukaku
    C: Kane
    D: Vardy
    E: Aubameyang
F: Not for premium, but midpriced instead. Who?

    Yes or No?

Ings, Vardy, Grealish to, Lukaku, Jimenez, Traore?

    -4 hit.

Not convinced by Lukaku is enough of an upgrade on Vardy just yet. Ings to Jiminez for sure. Maybe Grealish to Havertz?

I gave in and activated WC. I can't do without no activity for nearly 2 weeks, now I can get the likes of Ronaldo, sell bruno, and get wiliiams a sure 4.0 starter biggest relief is not having to worry about price rises and drops.

coward!!! probably a smart move.. I will see if I can hold on, Ronaldo I think is going to bullied in this league.. Been a while in slower less physical leagues.
