Cristiano Ronaldo and the best time to play the first Wildcard in FPL

It’s been a whirlwind start to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season, with the transfer window mirroring the frenzy that we have seen on the pitch.

So, with that in mind, in this article, I will be sharing my thoughts on what we have seen so far and what lies ahead.

THE RONALDO QUESTION

I can’t start this article without addressing the arrival of one of the greatest players to have ever graced the football pitch – Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m).

There have been some concerns that the Portuguese powers might be waning but as the table below shows, he has maintained his consistency despite the fact that he turns 37 in February 2022.

Portugal play three games over the international break of which two are World Cup qualifiers.

The first of those happened last night – a 2-1 win over Republic of Ireland which saw Ronaldo bag a brace of goals and become the all-time international record goalscorer.

However, he also picked up a late booking, which means that he is suspended and does not need to travel to Azerbaijan for Portugal’s second World Cup qualifier, which is due to take place on Tuesday. As a consequence, he has been released early from international duty.

So, I have full confidence that Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer will start Ronaldo in front of a packed Old Trafford in Gameweek 4.

Some have pointed out how Lionel Messi was eased off the bench in his first game at Paris Saint-Germain but Ronaldo’s case is very different. For Messi, it was the first transfer of his career, while Ronaldo is ‘returning home’ and Solsjkaer, in my opinion, is not a manager who is too stringent about players ‘adapting’ to his system. So, who makes way to accommodate Ronaldo in our FPL sides?

So, good luck and enjoy the international break.

We will be discussing Wildcard picks for those of you who have already pushed the button on the Gameweek 4 pod of The FPL Wire.

On a WC and thinking it’s best not to spend all the cash

    Antonio worries me injury risk

Benrahma worries me with rotation risk

Anyone else planning to keep cash back?

I don't want Antonio but have been burnt enough not owning him and do just seem him continuing to score

They're in great form for a great price. If they get injured or dropped then sell them.

I wildcarded last week and kept them both. But I have a strategy to get them both out - Benrahma for Mount in the Great Chelsea Turn, and Antonio at an indeterminate point later, but not long after.

Good afternoon all, which combo out of these do you prefer?

    A) 4.5 FWD - Jota - Son - Semedo - Ayling
    B) Vardy - Traore - Gray - Coleman - Ayling

    Cheers!

Could have just taken Ayling out altogether.

A probably however losing a striker slot to deadweight isn't ideal

Chaos will reign supreme then, if vaccinated no isolation needed if it's an amber country you're facing. Issue is we will never know vaccination status of players other than in rare circumstances where it's volunteered somehow, this means non vaccinated players who play in an amber list country have to isolate for 5 days

      E.g
Azerbaijan is an amber list, game Vs Portugal is on Tuesday, even if Bruno travels to England on that day 5 days would be Sunday so he misses the Newcastle game :O IF he isn't vaccinated

      1. @persecuted_by_mods

Lots of people gonna get badly stung this week, broad strokes and all that but footballers would be a demographic that I would guess are one of the least likely to be vaccinated

30% of EPL players have rejected the vaccine.

                2 years, 7 months ago

Issue is you wouldn't know who was gonna miss out or not, most managers in their pressers will probably say something like "one or two are missing out " I doubt they'd name them upfront. Gonna take some classic ffs detective work and solid wildcarding

Are all players in FPL at risk of missing games because of quarintine regulations not redflagged? Not a very scientific basus but Martinez and Sanchez both redflagged to miss GW4 for quarantine reasons.

              1. @persecuted_by_mods
                  2 years, 7 months ago

No, they are flagged because they face or travel to red list country so it doesn't matter if they are vaccinated or not they need to isolate

Players in amber list countries only need to isolate if they're not vaccinated, we and fpl won't know who has or hasn't been vaccinated

Yes he can, a red flag means they put a reducer on him. Not sure how much slower he drops.

Roughly it means his ownership percentage has to be double what a non injured player would be. Usually I think you'd be ok but in a week of so many WC I think its possible.

If, let's say, I know a guy who knows a guy who might be considering getting rid of Benrahma from his team due to Europa League + Vlasic kicking in after the next game week.

Exactly this, but to answer OP it will likely follow the pattern of not many risers and fallers like the previous few days. Maybe something like:

                    Rise: Reguilon
                    Fallers: 2x Arsenal, Barnes/Richarlison

Watched the FPL black box stream.

Mark trying hard to make a case for not getting Ronaldo.

He goes on and on about United not having good wingers to cross to Ronaldo and United’s fixtures being poor till gw 14/15.

Ronaldo will get plenty of service from Bruno and Pogba to compensate for any lack of crosses.

Also, we can all get Ronaldo for the next 3 and then jump onto Lukaku in gw 7. So that fixture argument is nullified.

I feel it’s just that Mark has locked himself into Lukaku for the next few and is just being stubborn to look at the upside that Ronaldo has to offer while trying to convince people to not get CR7 and keep his ownership low to avoid his rank damage. 😀

Classic case of trying to make his moves last week look good while ignoring points that’s staring at us. I’ve been guilty of this myself in the past. Another example being Lateriser last season with Werner.

                Nice try Mark. 😛

Should Harrison keep his place in first XI in Leeds after James came to Leeds?

I still have Harrison and i'm not sure what to do.

England XI: Pickford, Walker, Stones, Maguire, Shaw, Phillips, Rice, Mount, Grealish, Sterling, Kane.

This England lineup is very conservative. Stones, Sterling, no new faces.

What's the deal with Chilwell vs Alonso? I was sure Chilwell would be first choice. What's occurring?

Don’t think he was fit but expecting him to take over soon.

My Willard boils down to :
                Lukaku & Marcal
                DCL & TAA

                What do you think ?

Traorè or Raphinha instead of Fernandes to accommodate Ronaldo?

                Both have favorable fixtures
                Already owning Benrahma and Sarr

I don't like Torres because of the tricky
Fixtures in three of the next Four

And going for Son would mean Dennis instead of DCL!

Traore can't even hit the broad side of a barn, so I'd rather have Raph.

Is it worth getting Torres in (for Barnes) with Leicester Chelsea Liverpool 3 out of the next 4?

Also with many city players on international duty rotation could be ripe. What do you think?

Still good value if he starts I suppose.
The other option is Sarr for me
