Meet the Manager: Seven-time top 10k finisher reveals his Gameweek 4 Wildcard

In his latest Meet the Manager episode, Joe (@FFScout_Joe) chats to Tino Waked (@tinowaked) one of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers of all time, with seven top 10k finishes across his 13-year career.

His stellar run in FPL includes four top 4k finishes as well as a top 500 end of season rank.

Could an incredible eighth top 10k season be on its way this time around? At 23k heading into Gameweek 4 he certainly looks on course for a strong year once again.

Tino reveals the secrets to his success over his career and how dividing the season into a safe and steady first half and risk taking final few months has helped him.

The statistics available at Fantasy Football Scout have also aided him, as he runs through his favourite to look out for in each position. This research works best when combined with the eye test. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has curtailed his ability to watch games from his home in Egypt recently.

The health crisis has also seen fans absent from stadiums, a factor that has disrupted his usual close attention to home and away form.

Even though he is riding high in the rankings this season, he has taken the uncharacteristically early season, bold move of Wildcarding.

Fixture swings and the addition of Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku (£11.5m) and Manchester United’s Christian Ronaldo (£12.5m) to the game have prompted him to make the move.

But will both of these elite strikers make it into his final draft, or just one?

The Meet the Manager series is where Joe chats to FPL managers with a strong record of success, an interesting view of the game and are offering the community a unique insight into Fantasy management.

Joe’s chat with Tino can be viewed below:

Sanchez still the best 4.5 GK?

Yeah but the expectation from a 4.5 is what it is, I can't see many of them ending +50/-50 of each other.

Article the other day suggested not. Bachman could be a better option, especially with a 4.0 back-up

Yeah, looks like Steele should stay back-up actually. A few said it wasn’t clear-cut, and I’m guessing that’s cos we won’t know for sure until Scherpen’s back from injury, but hard to see them messing about with their back-up keeper order mid season

Think the responses here proved the point, three different keepers got mentioned so there isn't a clear cut answer.

Is Rudiger really worth it over Christensen right now? It's a 1 GW plan then it's onto two tougher fixtures. Wouldn't that 0.5 be more valuable elsewhere in the team?

Tuchel rotates but rates Rudiger so he is probably a bit more nailed than Christensen.

I owned Rudiger at 4.5 for Chelsea’s massive run of clean sheets last season and he was a bit meh to be honest, got frustratingly benched for several cleansheets and conceded several goals in several fixtures

Not queuing up to get him again at that price

There was also some analysis done, I think by Dr Rogg which actually showed Christensen being very nailed on. He only missed a handful of games, the first two under Tuchel then a couple through injury, otherwise tends to always play +60 mins.

I'm considering the double up as well, I don't think there is a threat in terms of apperances it's just do we want to commit to Wolves double up?

    Please choose between these drafts

    1. (3-5-2)
    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Shaw Dier (Duffy Livramento)
    Salah Greenwood Jota Sarr Benrhama
    Lukaku Antonio (Dennis)

    Sarr > Raph next week

    2. (3-4-3)

        Agree with 2, I can't see the benefit of losing a striker position when everyone is going to have a combination of;

        - Ronaldo / Lukaku / Kane
        - DCL / Bamford / Jimenez / Antonio / Ings

There is too much value there to lose.

            Yeah sure,

            - DCL / Bamford / Jimenez / Antonio / Ings are all in the 7-8.2 region, a number of them (at least 3) have fantastic fixtures coming up, Antonio is undroppable (right this second at least) and Ings is defying logic with his goal exploits. They are going to bang and two of these will likely be in most peoples teams.

            - You'll likely also have 1 premium striker in most teams too

In midfield you've got; Greenwood (who I've got too, but isn't as nailed as the strikers above), Jota is a rotation risk with Firmino, Benrahma has EL coming up + competition for places, Sarr really is an unknown quantity, especially when compared to the strikers.

The risk is high and the reward is fairly low in your current set up.

Don't believe it's an 'international injury' though.

No reason for S Korea to rest him.

They only had two matches and ballsed up their first qualifying result. They needed him and no reason to do Sours a favour.

Why do people prefer playing the likes of gray/traore week in and out instead of 5-5.5 mil defenders(343 instead of 442)?
Won't james/rudiger/shaw etc etc get more points than them?

      1. Vlekz

Because it takes a whole team to secure a C/S whereas Traore/Gray's (current) form/fixtures are pretty strong.

          - We (United) have only got one (lucky) clean sheet
          - Chelsea have two tougher games in their next three

        • Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 7 months ago

Most people have a core of longer term players (your Salah’s, your shaw’s, your TAA’s etc) supported by at least one attacking slot which is purely intended to be filled by shorter term punts targeting near term form/fixtures

If you’re picking a player for 10/15/20 gameweeks then that’s where defenders get an edge

If you trying to spike a potential 15-25 points over a 3-4 gameweek period for 6.0 or less, to augment whatever your core of more stable/more premium assets are generating, then that’s where Sarr, Traore etc come into their own

DCL is apparently nursing a broken toe, as well as the thigh injury, and has been coping with pain killer injections.

Anyone else worried about his immediate availability? Surely he will have to be taken out at some point this season to recover completely, and now seems like as good a time as any?

Currently in my WC but he's giving me a squeaky bum. How do other owners feel?

I think its telling that Everton spent sod all but when they did they went for Rondon on deadline day.

Cover they expect to need in the short term? Fixtures too juicy to drop though...

They did sell Kean and don’t have a backup for DCL really. So Rondon makes sense.

            Yeah that is concerning.

It's an easy switch out if he's injured though - not ideal though as I'd expect him to bang in the next 3.

He's been carrying the broken toe since pre-season. The muscle injury is more recent. Hopefully the 2 week break has helped him mend.

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but this is the issue for me.

He's carried it for a while already, and surely they won't expect him to do so the whole season. Given the 2 week break, it would make a lot of sense for him to take another few more gameweeks off to fully recover rather then force him back this gw, and have a longer lay off further down the line. Especially given the additional thigh injury..

I think I'm talking myself in to DCL > Jiminez

Your DCL > Jimenez switch isn't a bad thing. It's just I'd have preferred to have them both. I personally was lining up Jimenez in for Antonio in the coming weeks.

To heal that broken toe he needs a break. Running with that toe and using pain killers may also have contributed to or caused that thigh injury. Now would be good time to rest him for full recovery, so they just might do it. With these uncertainties I don't know what I would do with him if I was on WC.

Now that everyone knows he's got a broken toe, the first thing any centre half worth his salt is going to do is jump on it. Painful times ahead for DCL I'm afraid.

Traore for me on the basis there are strikers I’d rather have over Jimi, he is a bit of an unknown quantity after injury. We know what Traore is, one GW he will explode, but for the most part his end product is poor. If you have him for the week he finally hits the target, then you’re golden.

            In isolation Jimmy

But nothing happens in isolation & given the new pressure on both (a) striker slots and (b) budgets that CR7 & Kaku have suddenly introduced, Traore is probably easier

Do you like my WC draft and what would you change:

          Meslier (Gunn)
TAA - Chilwell - Semedo (Livra, Duffy)
Salah - Greenwood - Sarr - Traore (Sissoko)
          DCL - Ronaldo - Antonio
          0.3 ITB

I'd be worried about Chillwell - not sure he will be straight back in for gw4.

I'm hoping that he'll get his place back. At 5.7 he's a steal and a possible value if he rises in price. If he's not playing, then it's an easy switch to Rudiger.
              Cheers!

          Thoughts on this wildcard:

          Sanchez/Steer

          TAA/Shaw/Christensen/Williams/Duffy

          Salah/Jota/Raphinha/A Traore/Allan

          Ronaldo/Antonio/DCL

He just couldn't stop scoring the season before last...and then he got a new contract. Now he couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo. I'd avoid like the plague no matter what his upcoming fixtures are.

Any Arsenal fans out there that can explain why Tierney was hooked after 65 mins vs Chelsea? Ideally want to see him playing 90 mins if he's in my team.

I didn't see the full game but I did see him lying on the grass writhing in agony (as usual) at one point. Probably a knock.

              No need to WC.

Son was planning to come out anyway for CR7. Was secretly hoping for another 0.1 rise though. That's not likely to happen now

Is Duffy nailed? That 3 x 4.0 defenders combination might work if he is.
Also a midfield with both Gray and ESR in your playing 11 can be too risky.

Greenwood will now stop shooting at goal as long as Ronaldo's on the pitch so if Firmino is actually injured, Jota's a shoo-in.
