While Fantasy managers have been busy restructuring their EURO 2012 McDonald’s squads ahead of tonight’s quarter finals deadline, our heads were turned to domestic matters on Monday after the fixture list for the upcoming 2012/13 Premier League season was unveiled.

With our season ticker now up and running for the new campaign, we thought we’d cast an eye over the first six Gameweeks and give the fixtures their first frisk, with the release of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list now only a matter of weeks away:

The Strong

Man City

The champions are handed a dream start against Southampton in their opener, with Sergio Aguero already looking like a strong Gameweek 1 captaincy option. Bearing in mind they dropped two points at home all season last time round, you’d expect Roberto Mancini’s to see off QPR and Arsenal at the Etihad, while the return of Carlos Tevez towards the close of the previous campaign saw an upturn in away displays – affording Fantasy managers plenty reason for optimism, then, ahead of trips to Liverpool, Stoke and Fulham.

Chelsea

An obliging early schedule means the Champions League winners are likely to be heavily backed at the beginning of the new campaign. With Eden Hazard and Marko Marin already on board and the Abramovich cash certain to be splashed again, home games against Newcastle, Reading and Stoke look enticing. Their away fixtures could be tricky, though; an opening day trip to Wigan may prove difficult if the Latics can start off the way they finished last term, while derby visits to QPR and Arsenal should test the Blues’ resolve.

Man United

An opening fixture at Everton is far from enticing but United’s following three fixtures (FUL, sou, WIG) are likely to bring plenty of Fantasy investment for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. A Gameweek 5 trip to Anfield and a home clash with Tottenham see out their first six fixtures – arguably, then, the couple of Merseyside clashes look the only downside for last term’s runners-up. If United can replicate last season’s superb start, Wayne Rooney looking a strong captaincy option from Gameweeks 2-4.

Tottenham

The north London outfit face a tough opener away to Newcastle and head to Old Trafford in Gameweek 6 but in between those two fixtures, the prospects looks strong. From Gameweek 2-5, Gareth Bale, Rafael Van der Vaart and co face a run of matches (WBA, NOR, rea, QPR) that affords them the chance to pick up the points and makes the above-mentioned midfield duo decent armband alternatives.

Also Consider

Swansea – Michael Laudrup has been dealt a kind opening schedule as he gets acquainted with the rigours of the Premier League. The new Swansea boss takes his team to Loftus Road on the opening day of the season but is then handed three fixtures at the Liberty Stadium in the following four Gameweeks, as West Ham, Sunderland and Everton all make their way to Wales. With trips to Villa and Stoke also on the agenda, Laudrup looks to have the opportunity to get off to a prosperous start.

Aston Villa – Paul Lambert has been handed a decent set of first six fixtures to impress the Villa faithful. The midlanders face trips to two of the promoted sides, with an opening day fixture at Upton Park and a Gameweek 5 visit to Southampton on the agenda. Villa’s opening three home games see them play host to Everton, Swansea and West Brom – all will be targeted as the source of three points by the new man in charge.

West Ham – The Hammers are afforded the kindest schedule of any of the promoted sides over the first few games. Sam Allardyce’s men kick off the campaign with a home clash against Villa and, with travel-sick Fulham and Sunderland both rolling up to Upton Park by Gameweek 5, have a trio of favourable fixtures in front of their own fans. Trips to Swansea and Norwich – teams likely to still be finding their feet under new management – look enticing, given West Ham’s strong away form under Allardyce last term, with the visit to QPR in Gameweek 6 possibly their only real headache.

The Weak

Liverpool

The fixture list hasn’t been particularly kind to new Reds boss Brendan Rodgers. Liverpool face last season’s top three in their first trio of home fixtures, as City, Arsenal and United all roll up to Anfield by Gameweek 5. On the road, their season kicks off with a trip to West Brom – Steve Clarke will be desperate to continue the strong home form shown under Roy Hodgson towards the end of last season, while a visit to Sunderland looks tricky, given their upturn in Stadium of Light displays since the arrival of Martin O’Neill.

Southampton

Nigel Adkins’ side have been handed a trio of tough looking away fixtures in the first six Gameweeks. An opening day visit to the Etihad, in addition to trips to Arsenal and Everton, could well prove problematic for the Saints, making their home form vital to a decent start. Games against Wigan and Villa at St Mary’s could harvest the points, though a Gameweek 3 showdown against United will have many steering clear.

Reading

The Royals are another of the promoted sides that have been dealt a tough opening hand. Their first fixture of the season sees Stoke roll up to the Madejski – Brian McDermott will be keen to capitalise on the Potters clash before a Gameweek 2 trip to Sunderland. After that, it doesn’t get any easier, with Reading then squaring up to three of last season’s top six (che, TOT, wba, NEW). The new boys will need to be fast out the blocks or the honeymoon could quickly be over.

Also Be Wary Of

Newcastle – The Magpies face a tricky pair of opening fixtures – games against Spurs and Chelsea mean they are the only side to face two of last season’s top six in the first two Gameweeks of the new campaign. With a Europa League match in between those two games, Alan Pardew could barely have asked for a trickier start to 2012/13. A trip to Everton is also thrown into the equation in Gameweek 4, though their schedule begins to pick up the following week, with a home clash against Norwich preceding a trip to Reading.

Norwich – Chris Hughton’s first few fixtures in charge at Carrow Road look relatively unappetising. The Canaries first three away fixtures (ful, tot, new) pit them against teams with strong home records last time round and could see them struggle to pick up the points. At home, showdowns against QPR, West Ham may prove prosperous, though a Gameweek 6 clash with Liverpool looks a potential stumbling block.

QPR
Mark Hughes’ side look to have a favourable Gameweek 1 fixture with a home clash against Swansea on the agenda but their fixtures stiffen significantly afterwards. QPR then travel to Carrow Road for Paul Lambert’s first home game in charge of Norwich before embarking on a trio of fixtures (mci, CHE, tot) that will instill little confidence in Fantasy managers.

      B) but those two keepers are both expensive and will need changing for the semis which I'd say is a waste of a possibly very valuable FT.

When picking your team for the QF, is anyone considering the SF?

Or is everyone just trying to get as much points in the QF, then worry about the SF later?

Probably the latter. But that sort of leads to former (i.e., choosing players from teams who one expects to win in QFs should result in having the best chance to have high score from the QFs, and also many players in the SFs).

I see lots of people doubling and trippling on portuguese attack.. as a portuguese I must say, we are a team struggling with goals.
You might say we scored 3 to danmark and 2 against netherlands, but Netherlands lost 3 games, and they were all attack against us (not to mention their defense is weak), and against danmark we scored the third with lots of luck...
The amount of goals we miss is absurd. And we are going to keep missing because our strikers are shyte. The only attacking player worth it is Ronaldo or maybe Nani (the later also misses a lot). Getting Moutinho, Oliveira, and everyone else is a BIG gamble. Might workout, I doubt it...

Of couse i might be wrong and we can score lots of goals (afterall the best player in the world plays for us). but I just think if the Czech stop the bus, and stop it the right way, we will struggle... if we win might be a 1-0 win....
Take Pereira for example. I see lots of people picking him, probably because of his last assist (what a pass that was). But he is a weak player. He is clearly the worst player in our starting eleven. Anyone following the portuguese league knows this...

Defensively, Pereira is our weakest, but he is good offensively. This coming from a Portugal fan as well. We do miss alot of sitters, but if Czech Park the Bus, we will score early. Portugal need to be on the attack - they only seem to start playing when they are down 1 goal, luckily Netherlands scored early against us. As for our Midfield - Moutinho may get involved if we score, Meireles may get a 30 meter strike on traget if lucky - but for their prices not worth it IMO. All you need is Ronaldo and Nani for Port attack. Pepe and Alves are 3rd and 4th most likely to score.

I think it's easier for us (who watched every game and know every player) to understand this... but you made the point very clear:
          most likerly to score:
          Ronaldo
          Nani

      This guy is a joker.

He just wants to make people take out Ronaldo, so he will out-score them.

Against Holland, Ronaldo scored 2, hit the post twice & should have got an assist for Nani too.

Against Denmark, Ronaldo missed 2 sitters.

      Ronaldo is always a threat.

Veloso is their most defensive mid, but I wouldn't be putting good money on the line to back assists or goals from Moutinho. Pretty ordinary player, from what I've seen.

Stevie G or Pirlo really comes down to your win prediction, but they'll both likely be involved in any goals scored. I swerve to Stevie G. Nasri has been poor except against ENG.

Zonal Marking have a preview out for the Portugal game.

    Conclusions I can draw.

    1. Moutinho is a key player. If he plays well, Portugal will most likely win since he'll dictate play. So anyone punting on Moutinho is really make or break.

    2. The game will be won and lost on the Portuguese left/Czech right which means the likely offensive points getters are Coentrao + Ronaldo VS Gebreselassie + Jiracek.

Hmmm... Maybe getting Jiracek is a good idea since he'll likely get recovered balls tracking Coentrao down the left.

Hhhmmm. I'm considering downgrading Jiracek to kolar so I can upgrade Balzarretti to Barzagli or boateng to Badstuber. But I don't really know anything about kolar other than he will start behind the baros. Not sure if the upgrades are worth it or not. What do you reckon?

Stick on Jiracek. I'm looking for the 0.2m to upgrade Pilar, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

Might as well get Abate if you can't afford the security of Barzagli. Has as much chance of starting as Balzaretti, and isn't on a yellow either.

Tough as Hec. Schweiny and Khedira both get into some very good attacking positions, where assists are made, and I'm not convinced that just because Schweiny had one good points game he justifies the extra outlay.

Iniesta has been buzzy around most of SPA attacking moves but without being necessarily that involved, but he seems to me to have much greater 'potential' for a big score than Xabi.

No right or wrong, you will just have go with instinct.

Yeah, I spoke to my German friend who reckoned Khedira has been playing much better and could easily be involved in another goal too.

Cheers for the thoughts though. Perhaps David Silva for Rooney and Gerrard in my midfield solves a Spanish problem nicely.

FFS Friendly World Cup Group Reviews

    Group C

Let me start this off by saying, Giggs Boson, I warned you about Mull, maybe next time you'll take my advice seriously :P.

    JK Predicted

    Argentina
    Ivory Coast
    Japan
    Serbia

    1st - Argentina - Record P3 W3 D0 L1 GD+42 Pts9

As with the other groups one team stepped up and dominated. In this case it was Archie and Canadian Football, representing Argentina. In GW1 we had what appeared at the start to be the key battle between Argentina and Ivory Coast. It proved to be anything but and Argentina romped to a 106-91 victory, which would be a sign of things to come for both teams. In GW1 Archie led the way with 59 points under the stewardship of Ibra (c) whilst Canadian weighed in with 49 and a cheeky Yarmolenko (c) punt that yielded 1o points. In GW2 it was Canadian's turn to take the lead as Argentina defeated Japan 123-107. His 70 points was led by a Silva (c) success and backed by 2 CS plus Pilar, Dzagoev and Pirlo. Archie trailed behind this week coming in with 53, led by Dzagoev (c). GW3 saw the Argies seal their perfect record as they cruised to a 106-95 win over Serbia. Once again it was Canadian who led the way with a 64, led, inevitably by CR7 (c), supported by 4 CS including a English double. Archie (42) was left behind again as he suffered a Benzema (c) and a memory fail as he failed to bring Buffon and his 5 points off the bench for Chalkias and his 0. The USA await in the next round.

    2nd - Japan - Record P3 W2 D0 L1 GD+2 Pts6

Sarnab and Djebil essentially secured 2nd spot in GW1 with a 113-103 victory over Serbia that ultimately ended up settling the battle for 2nd place. The 2 managers were fairly even in GW1 as Sarnab scored a fairly hefty 60, led by captain Shirokov (the actual Russian, not the Switzerland co-manager) and a rather unexpected Andersen CS and St. Ledger goal. It was quite a week for Sarnab would likely have claimed the Order of Valour, but for a certain Dane. His partner was not far behind on 53 with Dzagoev (c) leading the way along with a Lescott goal. But he was let down by a Szczseny red card and doubling on German attack, but not having Gomez. GW2 saw them lose out to Argentina and offer a glimmer of hope to Serbia. Gerbil proved the star this week, hitting 66 with Dzagoev (c) and Silva leading the way whilst it was Sarnab (41) with Nasri (c) who let the team down this GW with only Pirlo, Mexes and Alba claiming more than 3 points without the armband. But with Serbia having to play Argentina in GW3, a 110-102 victory over Ivory Coast, coupled with that opening win was enough. Sarnab's 71 led, as ever, by Ronaldo (c) with an excellent display and Iniesta and Pirlo to back it up did the damage as Djerbil (39) appeared to be doing his best to throw it away with only Gomez, Alba and Buffon making it past 4 points. Chile await in the quarter-finals.

    3rd - Serbia - Record P3 W1 D0 L2 GD0 Pts3

Teddy and Messimerized made a great fight of trying to get out of this group, but alas after their GW1 defeat to Japan it just wasn't to be. A score of 51 for Teddy led by a failed Pique (c) punt and 52 from Messi led by that man Shirokov was just not enough, some extra Tekkers from Messi to switch the (c) to Mandzukic and this write-up would look very different. Fortunes improved in GW2 as they secured a 118-97 victory over a free-falling Ivory Coast to restore some hope. Messi atoned for his GW1 lack of Tekkers with 73, a total bested only by JK in GW2, was led by Silva (c) wit notable contributions from Dzagoev, Mandy and Benzema. Even a lacklustre 45 with a Debuchy (c) punt and that Danish Delhi bloke could not stop Serbia in this one. But alas for Serbia their hopes of qualifying rested on a victory over Argentina, and this was never likely with Teddy (52) led by CR7 (who else (c) and the Delhi man again and Messi's 46 with a Benzema (c) fail despite his Order of Valour victory for Seb Larsson and his 11 points.

    4th - Ivory Coast - Record P3 W0 D0 L3 GD-44 Pts0

Giggs Boson, I did warn you. GB carried this team from start to finish whilst Mull did what Mull does, sits back and lets things go tits up :P. In GW1 GB did his best, coming home with an even 50 with Ibra (c), Kuba, Shirokov, Yarmolenko and Lescott all making significant contribtions. Mull meanwhile scored just 41 with a 5-4-1 formation, the only notables being Ibra (c) Ribery and Konoplyanka. In GW2 GB came in with the first of 2 consecutive 57s, led by Gerrard (c) with Selaiise, Alba, Dzag and Pilar all chipping in. Mull meanwhile went backwards, scoring 40 with a Young (c) fail and only Debuchy and Alba to write home about. In GW3 GBs other 57 was led by Cassano (c), with 3 CS in defence, plus Iniesta and Pilar. Mull at least upped his game, but still only managed 48 with the same 3 CS and a Benzema (c) fail being the only things of note. Ivory Coast go out in shame. But that's what you get when you have Mull in an FFS Euro competition. 😛
