Our new series of articles focussing on Fantasy targets moving within the Premier League kicked off with a look at West Brom’s new boss Steve Clarke yesterday. Continuing in the same vein this afternoon, we run the rule over the new man in charge at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers.

Following the dismissal of Director of Football Damien Comolli and manager Kenny Dalglish, the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, have reassessed their “moneyball” approach after spending vast sums of cash the previous summer in an attempt to secure Champions League football. After being linked with the likes of Louis Van Gaal, Andre Villas-Boas and Roberto Martinez, the Reds have opted for one of the most promising managers in the British game as they seek to re-establish the club as a top-flight force after a dismal eighth place finish ultimately led to Dalglish’s sacking.

The former Swansea boss arrived with a ringing endorsement from club owner John W Henry, who summed up just why he was regarded as the perfect candidate for the Anfield vacancy:

Brendan’s comprehensive football philosophy is perfectly aligned with those at the club and those soon to join the club. He was the first choice unanimously among them and he had no hesitation at all in embracing exactly what we want to try to build at Liverpool…we firmly believe that the direction the club is heading in will lead to Premier League championships.

The History

The Liverpool job is Rodgers’ fourth in the past four years. Having previously been in charge of Reading’s youth set-up and the Chelsea reserves, his first role as a number one came back in 2008 at Watford. The Irishman guided the Hornets to 13th place in the Championship before agreeing to return to Reading as first-team manager a year later, but a disastrous run of form saw him part company with the club just halfway through his first term at the helm.

Rodgers spent seven months on the managerial sidelines before Swansea came calling in July 2010. Handed the chance to build on a style of possession-based football established by Roberto Martinez, he guided the club into the top-flight at the first attempt with a 4-2 play-off final win over Reading. Rodgers remained true to his 4-3-3 passing game ethos and was rewarded with an 11th place finish last season, with 14 clean sheets accrued over the course of the campaign. At home, in particular, his side were a regular source of defensive points for Fantasy managers, with nine clean sheets compared to just five on the road; the Liberty Stadium also witnessed wins over the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and City, and draws against Chelsea and Spurs.

The Previous Regime

The Carling Cup may be sitting in the trophy room but that one piece of silverware can’t disguise the fact that Liverpool were a disappointment last term. A shoot-out win over Cardiff in late February delivered the club’s first trophy in six years but, while the Reds also reached the FA Cup Final, they failed miserably in the league.

The Anfield faithful witnessed a mere six home wins under Kenny Dalglish – a record no better than relegated Blackburn. At both ends of the pitch they frustrated Fantasy managers, returning just five clean sheets and finding the net on 24 occasions. On the road, Liverpool lost 10 times under Dalglish in 2011/12; the same number as Wolves and just one less than Steve Kean’s outfit. Defensively, they were a little more solid than at home, accruing seven clean sheets but, going forward, scored 23 goals – the same tally as relegated Bolton.

The Season Ahead

Bearing in mind he has just replaced a Liverpool legend, Rodgers will be keen to appease the red half of Merseyside as he steps into the breach. One needs only to look at Roy Hodgson’s failure to win over the Liverpool support as an example of how it can all go wrong but, already, Rodgers seems to be making all the right noises – his press conference unveiling afforded the Irishman a chance to impress and he wasted little time in emphasising his approach to the job:

The way I want to play here is the Liverpool way. The history and tradition of this club has been about offensive football, attacking football – but always with discipline. The game will be based around what Liverpool are about, which is control, dominating games with the ball, working very hard when you haven’t got the ball and keeping the game as simple as possible. Of course I’ll bring in a certain philosophy which I’m attached to but the principles of your game are based around the players. For me the best thing about the game other than scoring goals is having the football, and that’ll be the idea and the fundamentals we’ll work on – but they are playing ultimately to win.

At the back, Rodgers will be relieved to hear Daniel Agger has confirmed he is more than happy at the club and intends to extend his stay, though recent transfer rumours have suggested Martin Skrtel and Pepe Reina may be subject to interest from Man City and AC Milan respectively.

In terms of transfer targets, it’s been well-publicised that Rodgers has struck up an agreement with Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins which prevents him from making a move for any Swansea player for the next 12 months. This, of course, does not apply to Gylfi Sigurdsson – despite having an agreement in place to move to the Liberty Stadium, nothing has yet been signed and the Hoffenheim midfielder now looks favourite to follow the Irishman to Anfield, having excelled under his stewardship at Reading and Swansea.

Rodgers has been cagey on the subject of transfer targets as he seeks to mould Liverpool into a team of his own making. Sigurdsson, clearly, was on his mind though when he spoke of what is required to step the club forward in the season ahead:

There are a few players who can come in and improve the group straight away. I know what we’ve got, more or less, in the squad, but I also know there are a couple of signings that could really improve what we do. I know the types of player I need to bring here to make us function well and that’s something myself, the club and the board will look at. That’s something we’ll work together on over the course of the summer and hopefully we can get one or two in.

From a Fantasy perspective, Sigurdsson would be a significant asset next time round if a move to Anfield transpires. While there is no doubt his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price would rise substantially, an average of 5.7 points per game in 2011/12 following his January loan move was the highest of any midfielder in the game – even a cost of 9.0, for example, would look value for money if he can scale similar heights.

At the back, Liverpool’s assets may well be earmarked by many if Rodgers can mirror the same sort of defensive returns achieved by Swansea last time round, while Steven Gerrard could well be set for a resurgence if he brings his Euro 2012 form to the table. Maybe the most intriguing aspect of Rodgers’ approach is how this will affect Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan was a massive disappointment in the previous season, though hinted at an upturn in form by producing attacking returns in four of his last five home games. A role on the left wing, cutting inside onto his more favoured right foot may afford Suarez more freedom to wreak havoc if Rodgers decides to select Andy Carroll as the lone forward in his 4-3-3.

With so many questions still unanswered over Liverpool’s prospects heading into next season, perhaps Monday’s fixture list has done Fantasy managers a favour. Their first three home games sees City, Arsenal and United all roll up to Anfield and, with an opening day trip to West Brom, in addition to visits to Sunderland and Norwich in the first six, their schedule could hardly be trickier. Chances are, then, the majority will be comfortable with little Reds’ investment to begin with, giving us time to assess their form and Fantasy prospects before their schedule takes a turn for the good.

      Brendan Rodgers
      Paul Lambert
      Chris Hughton
      Michael Laudrup
      Steve Clarke

I can see Clarke sacked by Christmas...also basing "how well" over the previous regime. Basically as long as Brendan Rodgers speaks civilly to the press, doesn't defend racism and carries on the Swansea style of slick passing, attacking football he will do well. Lambert will do better than McLeish, because basically I could do better than McLeish. Hughton will keep things ticking over, Laudrup is complete unknown.

I was thinking back on this the other day. FWC players have taken some major punts, far more so than the Euro guys. A few said the FWC looked more interesting due to the people in it,. It seems fair comment so far.

mmmm Newcastle don't need another number 9 imo they should be concentrating on getting a playmaker. Someone to link midfield and attack so they don't have to play hoofball all the time.

Not a fishing rod to be seen. We play sexual football when we play 4-3-3 as you well know.

Pompey, yeah its surprising that they seem so mad on him in particular. I think we need a general squad strengthening with a quality right back. I'd be happy with Debuchy and a number of young prospects to be honest rather than spending a huge whack on one player.

we don't know. Bild is reporting that Low will change his entire front 3 (or just Gomez to Klose depending on which branch of Bild you listen to). No official word on this, we'll just have to wait for line-ups. Not good news for anyone who has already made the switch to Gomez (c).

Once upon a time there were two German Strikers, one named Gomez who scored 3 goals in the group stage and thought he was on top of the world, however Mr Lowe thought he wasn't contributing to the team as much as his pal Klose could, so Klose got the call up in the knockout stages.

The Greeks sat all their men behind the ball frustrating the Germans who couldn't break the deadlock, until Super Mario left the bench to do what he does best and score.

All the Germans and Fantasy managers lived happily ever after.

    FWIW, from ESPN:

"Germany are to rest Mario Gomez, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Muller against Greece, according to German newspaper Bild."

So Miro, Schurrle, Reus as a front 3?

as they expect to beat Greece easily I expect. Think it's madness personally, as PB said there is a logic to resting each one individually, but all 3 together. Gomez has done little wrong. Ok he's not great as an all-round player, but if Low wanted that from him he wouldn't be picking him, he is there to score goals. I can see the logic to the other 2 though, Podolski and Muller have nt been great so far. Bringing in Schrulle and Reus could make sense. Use their pace to get in behind the defence to create chances for Gomez.

they are resting them for the next tournament. You do not rest your best players in a knock-out game. You may want to 'save' them for the next round, but if you leave them out there may not be a next round. Start them, get the game won, then take them off for a rest FFS.

May I ask for some tactical feedback. With 3x subs to come on (1x SPA, 2x ENG) in matches 3 & 4, do you think it worth transferring out Pilar now for one of the £4m min Greeks to maximise my SF transfers funds. Would mean losing Pilar's 3 pts, although that's likely to be bettered elsewhere anyway, no?

depends how many 4m you already have and how many playable subs you want.

Yes, Jonts, this is my consideration. Sorry to all above for my distinct lack of clarity. I've alreday got £4m GK, Def and Mid, so actually, on reflection, may as well keep Pilar for now and then see what I need to do SF-wise with my 8 FTs, to leave me with one good sub-in opp.

Sorry to confuse everyone, and many thanks for the feedback, it's much appreciated.

Tranfering him out will not affect your points for this GW. If you meant subbing him out, surely you have players who play later in the week to leave on the bench for the Greeks.

If its transfering though, then I guess the Greeks won't be available for long so if you think you will need the extra funds then buying them now seems a good idea I think. I already have Butland, Makos, Limbersky as my three 4.0 players, I want to have a squad of twelve at least for the semi's.

Beric, having several min cost players isn't a problem, you can transfer out as you see fit. It's not having £4m min players to help build a 12-13 man squad for semis that's important.

I agree Jonty, I've maintained all along that Greece do not have the same defence they used to. They play a completely different attacking 4-3-3, different manager and are nothing like the Rehhagel team.

I can't see Germany taking chances against Greece with their lineup. That said, they may genuinely believe the 3 replacements are better for this match.

Even if they do, it's not their natural system. It's not the way they've been set up to play. One of my Greek friends summed it up, he said, "People in Greece got tired of our negative football and wanted us to attack with our talented players. This is what we got."

The front three of Samaras, Gekas and Salpingidis cannot be counted on to defend... it's like asking Ashley Young to track back.

At last someone who has watched Greece and thought,,,,,hey, they are really pants.

It does indeed seem more credible that key players will be rested because Greece are so bad, not because they are some kind of impenetrable time travelling, eight foot thick lead lined wall that not even Messi with a jet pack and diamond tipped missles could penetrate.

They've looked all over the shop and Russia were very unlucky not to score...it was probably because they didn't have a quality striker like Gomez in their team rather than because Greece is made up of a back line created by Zeus himself.

          LOL

I do think Greece are pretty pants. Both player-wise (no creativity, not even that great defenders, predictable forwards) and tactically.

Tactically because they are not making the best use of their players - if you're going to play 3 forwards they better be good, mobile, intelligent and goal threats. Samaras is crap. Salpingidis I have a soft spot for but no one would say he is brilliant, and Gekas is a non-threat. So they've wasted at least two striker spots on people doing buggr'all most of the game. You can also see my post in which I note all of their goals came from individual mistakes, not their own creation.

Not Boateng! The only other Germany player I've got is Hummels but I'll make the decision later.

Look at Portugal record vs spain in recent years - Pretty level with possibility for goals.

Will depend on Spanish defensive performance against France. First great attack they'll have met IMO (feel free to yell now, Italian and Croatian fans)

Pogrebnyak to Reading, only good if he can regain the form of his first three Fulham games.

To my mind the Gomez issue is something of a moot point. Current ownership is 41.8% but this will factor in thousands of non-active fantasy players without him. His true ownership among active players will be much, much higher, almost everyone on here, for example, seems to have him.

Ergo, he doesn't play, everyone's in the same boat and it becomes neutralised. Tricky bit is remembering to check online around 7pm (UK time) for line-up info, and having web access to make that (c) change if you choose to.

So tranquillo Gomez owners, tranquillo. 🙂

Germany XI vs. Greece: Neuer - Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm - Khedira, Schweinsteiger - Reus, Özil, Schürrle - Klose according to BILD.

Actually, for me it would be great as I have 4 German defenders and only 18 points from #1 overall. Seems like everyone ahead of me has Gomez - I chose Nani so a gomez blank would neutralize that difference - doesnt seem like too many have bet the boat on German defense - Hopefully they pull through with a cleanie. Crossing Fingers.

My Big question is do I pull Makos off of my team now in terms of substitutions - I know I will waste One on Nani - Possibly one on Torres if he doesnt play - My worry is a Makos red card could be tournament changing and I can almost see one of the greeks being sent off this game if the pressure is nonstop. Really considering it.

      Thoughts?

If Gomez does indeed start on the bench, the idea of a Hummels captaincy grows greater. Germany will not be as generous as the teams in group a in terms of gifting Greece a goal. Secondly Russia could easily have got a goal from a set-piece, every chance Hummels might, and he seems to like rampaging forward a wee bit too.
