Gameweek 7 Wildcard team reveal: Lukaku over Ronaldo plus double City and Arsenal

Ex-FPL winner Simon March: How to avoid getting carried away with your GW1 picks

After a Gameweek 6 score of 44 and a fourth red arrow in succession, I embraced the ‘Sunday night Wildcard’ cliche and finally pushed the button. For this article, I’ll be sharing my current draft and a bit of the thinking behind it.

First off, a word on the timing of the Wildcard. While I had my fair share of yellow flags and underperforming players, it was mainly the concern that I would be priced out of the team I wanted that made me choose this Gameweek. As you’ll see, this necessitates greater investment in the Liverpool v Man City fixture than I’d ideally have liked and a Gameweek 8 Wildcard would not only have avoided that but, also, have allowed me to better mop up any problems that might occur during the preceding international break.

However, neither of those factors seemed significant enough to warrant holding off and, equally, there are opportunities to be gained from tapping into some of the good Gameweek 7 fixtures.

Finally, I’m approaching this Wildcard with a fairly long horizon and am targeting the players and teams that I think can deliver for the foreseeable future. Equally I’m seeking enough depth that my squad can cope with the unexpected. My hope is that this will help me establish a reliable enough foundation that I can use my transfers progressively rather than reactively going forwards.

So, without further ado, here’s my current Wildcard draft.

Goalkeepers

The Kasper Schmeichel (£5.1m) / Danny Ward (£4.0m) Leicester goalkeeper rotation is a hill I’m willing to die on this season having already had it from the start. While they are not the most popular picks between the sticks (ooh that rhymes), at least not in the FPL community, they haven’t done badly, averaging 3.0 points per game so far, despite Leicester’s dismal defending.

Schmeichel is second for saves made, which helps him in terms of save points and bonus points but just the one clean sheet is not all that convincing a return. That said, I do believe Leicester will improve, particularly with the return of Jonny Evans (£5.4m), and, also, that it is more likely that they will sort out their defensive problems than some currently better-performing options are likely to maintain their defensive solidity.

Finally, at £9.1m combined (£9.0m for me), Schmeichel/Ward offers a strong certainty of a playing goalkeeper for a fairly low cost.

Defenders

My strategy for the defence is to get three near-to-nailed-on players from what appear to be the three best defences in the league (Liverpool, Man City and Chelsea) and then, ideally, leave them for the rest of the season so I can focus my transfers elsewhere.

I take it the trend is Ronaldo out on all these wildcards and FTs saved up to get more Chelsea picks, with people preferring Lukaku.

It'd be classic FPL if Ronaldo bagged three in the early kick off and Lukaku got nothing. Its happened time and time again with the likes of Sanchez and Hazard frequently scoring hatfuls after a lot of people have sold for a seemingly better option.

In a wc it's not a bad decision to go with Lukaku over Ronaldo.
It's a huge risk to use your ft for Ronaldo->Lukaku.
Ronaldo->Lukaku in gw9 is the best move imho.

Not sure it’s great timing. Lukaku isn’t on pens. Ronaldo could now be on pens. It’s a huge weapon in the locker for your captain pick. Salah has turned 3 pointers into 10s with pens before. Given how well Chelsea’s backline do with bonus Lukaku needs to have 2 involvements to “haul” you would think,

Plus I don’t see saints suddenly falling apart given how defensively sound we’ve looked all season. If Chelsea miss Kante and James I think they will struggle against us. Would argue Werner is a better option up front against our super slow defenders

My FPL email is my email, so I disclosed it to this site at the very least. I also use the 'fplstatistics' and 'lastmanstanding' sites. I didn't disclose my password to anyone but did use a simple password as i thought "who would bother to jack a fantasy football account"?!

I’m sorry to hear that. Seems FPL isn’t doing too much to help out unfortunately. All I can suggest is you set up a new team and in future use something like 1Password to manage all your unique complex passwords to hopefully stop this happening again.

              All the best.

Thanks for sharing your experience. You just helped dispel some possibilities

So this is more of generalised hacking than 3rd party FPL sites leaking FPL passwords

Yeah. FPL is taking the "It can't possibly be our fault. It must be yours!" approach to this, which is easy but off-putting

I now think it's neither of those two options. Might be targeted hacks via brute force (password guessing, maybe)

        1. Amphetamine Logic

Crime is never the fault of the victim. That's my problem with that statement from FPL

            It's the hacker's fault

I'm sorry you had to experience this. I hope it's resolved and you find peace with the best realistic option going forward. Good luck

That sucks, hopefully you can get it re-instated?

Did you also receive this email recently?

      Reminder regarding FPL account security

We are aware of a small number of FPL managers reporting that their team has either been deleted or compromised in some way.

There is no indication or evidence of a security breach on the accounts of these individuals via fantasy.premierleague.com or the Premier League mobile app.

We would like to take this opportunity, however, to remind all FPL managers that sharing your FPL login credentials – email address and/or password – with third-party websites or applications puts the security of your FPL team at risk.

We have never condoned or endorsed the use of third-party websites or applications to aid FPL team management.

In addition, we recommend that FPL managers practise good password hygiene by using a strong password that would be hard to guess, creating a unique password for FPL that isn’t used elsewhere, and updating the password regularly.

    Good day all,

I was just wondering if there are any Southampton fans/followers around here that can enlighten me on how Elyounoussi has been playing & if he's worth a go over there nice fixture run?

Looking for a cheap midfielder in the price range of 5.5-5.8, don't entirely fancy the Everton lads, the other option being Gallagher.

    Cheers!

Don't think I'm exaggerating here, but if it wasn't for the injuries, think we'd be talking about the original Ronaldo in the same bracket as Maradona, Messi, Pele. The guy was out of this world in his prime.

i'm trying to fit Vardy in WC too - along with Lukaku and Antonio upfront.

          So:

          A) Vardy, ESR, Walker, 1 Chelsea, Williams
          or
          B) Jiminez, Saka, Cancelo, 2x Chelsea

          Hmm.

I quite like B to be honest, I feel that double chelsea will pay off over the next 5-6 GW's, also, Vardy may start to be rotated a bit more with the likes of Iheanacho & Daka becoming fit.

Have 2 FT and 0.2 ITB. Don't think I need to wildcard and so which option looks best? Wondering if it's better to have 2 FTs after the int'l break and so keep Bruno and delay getting Raph by one GW?

    A - Shaw > Rudiger and save 1 FT
    B - Shaw & Bruno > Alonso & Raph
    C - Other option?

    Sanchez
    TAA - Shaw - Coufal - Duffy
    Salah - Bruno - Benrahma - Doucoure
    CR7 - Antonio

Going to use one of my 2FTs on Jota to Smith Rowe but wondering if it’s worth selling Trent too (probably for Rudiger)? Would want him back though…

If you wanted to City players for your wildcard, would you double up with Cancelo/Dias or go with Cancelo/Grealish (Possibly Foden)?

I already have 2 Chelsea defenders but I'm not sure about putting all my eggs in 1 basket! Both teams are doing bits defensively though...

Probably find out if Shaw is fit before the deadline..
Depends on how much left in the bank, to either transfer Ayling or TAA to a Chelsea defender..
I wouldn't play a WC , in this situation, mids and fwds are fine.

Depends, do you want to bring in other players in particular?

a lot of people are wildcarding because of fixture swings, Chelsea fixtures etc.. If you don't mind going without Chelsea players...

Your defence looks quite shakey, with current injuries.

Also no City players in there.

Personally, I would put more Chelsea players in, defenders especially. Your attack is obviously nasty.

Jota isn't one for the long as he'll be getting rotated soon so bare that in mind.

Personally, I would wildcard. If not this week, then next week for sure as I've got a feeling Ronaldo will bang a couple this week. (Hopefully)

none of them are actually nailed, so none - but if I had to it'd be Havertz I guess

Best defenders to have on WC? Have taken out TAA

    1. Balls of Steel

      Cancelo

    2. OLB

I did same. But it's a long term decision not a short term one.
Selling TAA and Ayling buys 2 Chelsea - season long it will pay - my new defense is :
      VVD / Cancelo / Dias / Alonso / Rudiger
Look at points projections for them all - it's viable and if TAA goes wild it's only a mid downgrade of 1m and up VVD to him.

he could yeah, but wouldn't be in any way confident - Wolves fans want it to happen if that means anything

    RMWCT:
    Ramsdale / Foster
    Cancelo / Azpi / Rudi / Semedo / Duffy
    Salah / Zaha / Raphi / Saka / DLuiz
    Lukaku / Vardy / Toney

Go Marcal > Semedo, save yourself the money, wish I did that myself a few weeks ago.

Potentially Livramento > Duffy? Southampton have some nice fixtures coming up & again, saves you some money.

Aside from that, looks G2G. Hopefully the Zaha punt works out for you!

I bought Duffy for 4.0, can sell now for 4.1 and Livra is 4.2.

Zaha, fact he is on pens and the way CP plays lately, feeling they will have a good run and he will benefit from it.

Marcal/Semedo - haven't watched Wolves lately. Used to be that Semedo is having more att positions and Marcal was lucky with 2 assists. Time for Semedo to get sth?

        Many thanks for your input!

I've taken my first hit of the season, Torres > ESR and then Bamford > Toney last night. Am I G2G for this week? Will bring in Lukaku next week and some city defence in the coming weeks.

    Sanchez
    Rudiger - Marcal - Livra
    Salah - Jota - Gray - ESR
    Antonio - Toney - Cr7 (c)

    Steele - Sissoko - Williams - TAA

Semedo, due an attacking return playing high up the pitch.
Sorry Chelsea this week, City next week are the obvious choices.
