Mbeumo, Toney – or both? Which Brentford attacker to buy in FPL

Brentford are set to rise to the top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture difficulty once their Gameweek 8 clash with Chelsea is out of the way.

Their (mostly) favourable run stretches from Gameweeks 9-19, which takes us right the way through to Boxing Day.

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers currently on a Wildcard ought to be seriously thinking about the Bees’ assets for this period, then, while the rest of us will likely be eyeing up Thomas Frank’s side once Saturday’s visit of the European champions has been and gone.

Frontmen Ivan Toney (£6.4m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£5.5m), who are the two most-bought Brentford players of Gameweek 8, will be among those competing for our attention.

One is the penalty-taking talisman of their promotion-winning season, the other is a cheaper, ‘out of position’ midfielder who has matched his strike partner for goals scored in 2021/22.

But which of them is more deserving of our investment – and is there room for both in our FPL squads going forward? Our Premium Members article delves deeper.

MBEUMO v TONEY: THE COMPARISONS

Mbeumo stacks up very well next to Toney when it comes to goal threat, trumping or matching his strike partner for penalty box touches (32 v 29), goal attempts (17 v 16), shots in the box (11 v 11) and big chances (5 v 2).

Arguably the most eye-catching stat is ‘expected goals’ (xG) when penalties are taken out of the equation: Mbeumo’s figure (3.2) is almost three times that of Toney’s (1.11).

Toney has been the more creative of the two so far in 2021/22. Edging Mbeumo for chances created by 11-8, Toney has supplied four ‘big chances’ to his strike partner’s zero.

Indeed, the forward’s ‘expected assists’ (xA) tally is 1.91 to Mbeumo’s 0.54.

All of that leaves the two Brentford attackers pretty much level for expected goal involvement (xGI) overall: Mbeumo the greater goal threat from open play, Toney the man on penalties who looks like he may chip in with almost as many assists this season as goals.

Against bigger teams, when brendford play on counter attack toney is playing as false 9 and mbuemo as the target man/Striker.

Against teams like newcastle norwich and burnley toney will play just like last year.

    Toney or both for me.

This is my current thinking as well. Mbeumo furthest forward against top teams and Toney dropping deep. I'm hoping Toney plays a bit further forward in the "easier" fixtures and provides more of a goal threat. I'm on the double up.

Too many forwards in that price bracket. Had Wilson in the beginning until he got injured. He will be involved in most Newc goals, but his injury record is pretty dire.

Yes. Toney + Raph > Armstrong + Torres. But it actually depends on Raphinha going up. If he doesn't go up, I can't do it and will go for the boring safe option.

Keep Son imo. The more I think about it, the more nailed on he is for me. He's just reliable points and the fixtures are quite decent. Think Spurs do well away because of their counter-attacking setup.

Worth dropping TAA for 3 or so weeks on WC in order to afford KDB, or no point scheduling in 2FT move later down the line especially cause it’s going into the next IB?

      But it is TAA 🙂

I am in the same boat as I WC last week, but wasn't until Friday. Have two Chelsea and two Man City, but it would be Chelsea players to go (one of Rudiger, Azpi) and a midfielder for a -4 hit, but i don't see a Chelsea CS this weekend.

Barnes has started almost every game. Iheanacho has also been available. And both started against Palace. I don’t think Iheanacho affect Barnes at all.

If Iheancho moves into the starting lineup consistently it will affect Barnes for sure.
Maybe in a good way - maybe in a bad way (though hard to be worse than his start from an FPL point of view).

I’d hold on Leicester attackers until they figure out how to win games - no idea what their best line up is (unless you want Vardy which is fine I guess).

Any GW7 WC's here? Need a little advice

I left myself a benching headache, but i was inevitable as I tried to do Benrahma to Luiz last minute.

I had hit the WC on Friday, due to just being fed up with Jota/Greenwood and injuries et all.

The luckiest GW ever as it came back Jiminez Capt. I have no idea, whether if it was my mistake or not, but it produces a 30 point swing in my favour, after a miserable 44 in GW6.

My team ATM. 1FT 0.1 itb

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    Rudiger, Azpi, Cancelo, Dias (Livra)
    Saka, Gallagher, Raphinha, Salah, Benrahma
    Lukaku, Antonio, Jiminez.

    A) TAA and Benrahma from Rudiger and Brownhill (may need that 0.2m) -4
    B) Hold
    C) Jiminez to Toney (Jiminez will be tired) and bench Toney with Raphinha

I just feel a TAA haul coming on.

I will be getting Toney for Jiminez next week if I do A or B, and later get in Son.

My team is a bit mucked up, but don't mind a couple of -4's in the next 3 weeks because of the gains made last week.

I think Jack is certainly more nailed, but just not sure that necessarily makes him a better FPL option in the sense that he might be playing deep or might just be contempt with a ‘hockey’ assist of the assister. Of course if he’s on the pitch there’s always a chance he gets a return but just not sure about any City mid that’s not KDB

It all comes down to who plays CF for City which is a lottery at the moment with Sterling, Torres and Foden able to occupy that spot. That is why I would not gamble on Grealish or Foden as only one can play LW.

Jesus is looking like the only nailed City attacker tbf.

Jesus in Brazil so Torres looks good for a one week punt, but that is all it would be I guess

Yes I agree, could do Torres for a one week and then downgrade to Raphinha next week so you don’t have to bench him this week

Totally agree, yet here I am considering a hit to get him in.

That said, BigmanBakar (and others) have pointed out that Foden has often been rested for league games when European games are on (and even early stage cup games); apparently he only started 3 games in a row in the prem twice last season..

If history is anything to go by, Foden will be rested ahead of Barcelona next week. Mahrez and/or Torres may end up playing instead...

Cue 'Pep is a Fraud' posts...

Agree. I used to enjoy playing pep roulette but there just seems to be too many options in the MF now to make it worthwhile. I'll probably avoid

    Schmiechel ward
    Taa Dias Tierney Duffy Livra
    Salah Raph Sarr Gallagher Sissoko
    Ron Antonio Jimi
    1ft 1.5m in the bank.
    Any suggestions?
    Was considering Raph> Foden
    Or Taa Raph> James Son

TAA is fit apparently and I wouldn't lose Raph given his fixtures. I'd probably save.

My only problem with Raph is are we going to have this scenario after every ib? If so might not be worth keeping?

You could save and pay a 5-2-3, or do Sarr to another midfielder this week, Torres as a one week punt?, and Ron to Lukaku next?

Actually quite fancy Sarr to get something this week Liverpool will be without Allison and new manager bounce

    Afternoon pros. Any thoughts?

    Guaita
    James*, TAA, Alonso, Semedo, Livra,
    Salah, Jota, Raphinia, Gilmour, Sissoko
    Ronaldo, Jimenez*, Antonio

    1FT, 0.4 ITB

Starting to think saving a transfer is the best option. Tempted by city assets but Jota has a great fixture, want to see if Alonso is back in the team and not enough cash to upgrade Semedo. They're the only 3 I'd think about moving on really.

Jota is injured. Would definitely go to a City asset

Is he definitely out? In that case I might just move him to mbuemo. Terrible fixtures but feel like he's a better long term option than Torres or Foden who I'd go for otherwise and he gives me cash for a Semedo upgrade next GW

I'd be worried that none of
      Jota
      Alonso
      Raphina
      R James
will start. I'd say it's more likely they each won't, than will, this weekend.

Last 5 Burnley @ City results:

    City - 4 Burnley - 1
    City - 5 Burnley - 0
    City - 5 Burnley - 0
    City - 5 Burnley - 0
    City - 5 Burnley - 0

Currently deciding on one of these hits to get a city attacker...

    a) -4 Benrahma to Torres
    b) -8 Ricardo Pereira & Benrahma to White & Torres

    Full team - OR 9,747 :
    Sa
    TAA Cancelo Rudiger
    Salah Raphinha Benrahma Gray
    Lukaku Antonio Jimenez

    Gunn; Livramento, Pereira, Sissoko

Honestly, do not go there with F Torres. His FPL points are a mirage. I know about the "he could/ what if" but honestly, just don't.

Agreed long term...But short term, I think he is fairly safe to start this week and could easily bag a 1 or 2. Jesus a doubt as Brazil doesn't play until tomorrow. Will wait for pressers to determine.

      I say go for it.

      Bennie > Torres

If it works you might end up top 1k.
If it doesn’t you’ll still be super high up there in a great position.

Use your great start as a chance to take some more risk (if you want).

I do think Pep will likely bring back a centre forward for this run of PL games. Sterling and Torres have shared that role so far, and god know Torres has demonstrated he is better at it. It sounds so logical to me but Pep Roulette is Pep Roulette

    A. KDB
    B. Foden
    C. Grealish
    D. Sterling
    E. Gundogan
    F. Torres
    G. Mahrez
    H. Bilva
    I. Jesus
    J. Any other nailed player from another team

    1. Thomas Magnum

For me KDB is the cream of the crop, followed by Jesus (the former being better for all of the next 3 plus some with Jesus missing out this week) but then the rest is up to your risk appetite. If only for a week then F with price factored in but J for piece of mind

      Gundogan and Jesus both doubts...

      Back 4 + Rodri...

So 5 of the remaining 7 will start.

      Most nailed in my mind:
      1. KDB
      2. Grealish
      3. Foden
      4. Torres
      5. Silva
      6. Sterling
      7. Mahrez

When United's fixtures turn again, who do you think will be the key FPL option?

Given the penalty situation, looks like Bruno may be the one.

    1. Thomas Magnum
      • 8 Years

Bruno may be the one, but Ronaldo may be the easy one. Especially for those looking to offload Lukaku and only have 1 transfer available and money ITB

How's Bruno the one? He just missed the last pen and with Ronaldo scoring 2 pens last night, albeit for Portugal, I can see it being him stepping up next.

    2 FTs. 0 itb

    A) Sarr & Semedo to Mbeumo & Walker/Laporte
    B) Sarr & Semedo to DLuiz & Cancelo + 0.2 (Start one among DLuiz / Livra every week)
    C) Gallaghar & Semedo to Brownhill & Dias (Start Livra every week)
    D) None of the above.
