If you handed the armband to Xabi Alonso tonight, you need not bother with the “stick or twist” dilemma. The Spain midfielder returned the highest individual score so far in EURO 2012, with two goals, a clean sheet and five recovered balls helped him to a staggering 28 point captaincy haul. For the rest of us, though, there’s still plenty to ponder over.

In truth, tonight was a disappointment. The top four in our Captain Poll – David Silva, Andres Iniesta, Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas – all failed to pick up any attacking returns, with Torres’ owners left frustrated after he was omitted from the first XI by Vicente Del Bosque. France were woeful and offered little going forward – after all the pre-tournament hype, they grabbed just three goals over their four matches and limp home after a lacklustre performance. Time to contemplate tomorrow’s options, then, as we rundown the likely armband contenders.

Italy will be reliant on Andrea Pirlo to continue the superb form he produced over the three Group C games. The Juventus midfielder was the only player to produce attacking returns in all of the Azzurri’s matches and is by far their top scorer in the McDonald’s game, with 19 points accrued. Antonio Cassano is the only forward to start every match so far and will arrive in confident form, having broken his scoring duck in the previous encounter against Republic of Ireland. Mario Balotelli impressed in a brief sub appearance against Giovanni Trapattoni’s troops with a superbly taken finish and could replace Antonio Di Natale in the first XI, while Thiago Motta may flourish in a role in “the hole” if Cesare Prandelli continues with his 4-3-1-2 system.

For England, Steven Gerrard has been the main protagonist – similar to Pirlo, he has also produced the goods in all three of his appearances and, with 18 points on the board, leads the way for Roy Hodgson’s side. Wayne Rooney announced his return from suspension by nodding home the only goal in the win over Ukraine and will carry the hopes of plenty Fantasy managers – with just 8.2% ownership, he could prove a decent differential tomorrow evening. Danny Welbeck offers a mid-price armband alternative to his United team mate up front, while Ashley Young is afforded the perfect opportunity to prove his worth on the left flank, after a below-par tournament thus far.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Putting in Revelliere on RB to allow the other RB Debuchy to play midfield.

    Rookie mistake Blanc.

    Close to pathetic substitution.

True that. Was absolutely sure that he would take Rev off in order to play Debuchy - one of the tournament's best at his position - on RB.

France as a whole was totally pathetic tonight to be honest.

One option is to have him, and switch to either Gomez or Klose (or Rooney perhaps) depending on who starts in the final. If Portugal make it then obviously keep him.

    Neuer

    Badstuber - Hummels - Alba - Pique

    Fabregas/Biscuits - Reus - Ozil - Alonso

Balotelli/Cassano should not be there as they won't play in a Euro again for 4 years. Cassano most likely never, but with his health you never know...

Love Alonso as a player and will always defend his place in the starting XI, but I feel that this fantasy kneejerk is unnecessary. Do not think that Moutinho and Meireles will fall as deep as the French mids did today, allowing Alonso to go forward to such an extent. And you surely can count on a pen.

Otherwise I like it and will probably end up with the same back five. Just a small doubt on Boa vs Badstuber.

    A) Silva & Arbeloa
    B) Podolski & Pique
    C) Müller & Ramos
    D) Müller & Lahm

My other defenders are currently Hummels, Alba & Boateng.

If you have Neuer in goal I would go for C. If you have Casillas I would go for D. If you have any other it is a toss up.

My gut feeling says Neuer + C since I have a gut feeling for a Ramos/Pique goal next game.

      Kind regards,

As I think Portugal will score I would go with D personally. Also more likely that Lahm will produce a goal or assist than Ramos doing the same. Plus Ramos is more likely to get booked in my opinion. More risk in having 3 defenders from one country though obviously, so it is a matter of preference and game style as well.

now everything is clear for me..may be only two finals: Spain-Italy or Germany-Portugal...You ask me why???it's so simple...From 1988,every 8 years exactly the same teams are playing in the final as in the first match of group stage..

    88' Netherlands - USSR
    96' Denmark - Germany
    04' Greece - Portugal
    12' ???

I don't know what you think about it, but I believe in such things .. or maybe I'm too drunk 🙂

The first goal was mainly Schurrle's fault imo. A prime example of his consistently sketchy passing. Then add that Badstuber is nowhere to be found and that Hummels could maybe have reached the ball and should not be that outrun by Salpingidis. Boas pace is perhaps needed in the central defense to be honest. On top of that the shirt tugging and I do not think Boa could be blamed entirely.

Many seem to forget his awesome offensive display in light of his supposed defensive wrong doings. An almost spotless passing record, many nice forward runs and an assist as well.

Also keep in mind that the Germans also played with a very high line, which they are not used to at all. Some of the problems are therefore not very likely to return in upcoming games.

In short: Löw should keep him on the pitch.

I get this suspicious feeling that the final is going to be Portugal vs England, the least everyone expects. Anybody else? Spain and Germany to be beaten together in the semis? No?

Captain Gerrard, Balzaretti or Pirlo? Feel like a bit of a traitor if I captain an Italian though!

From an outsider's perspective: Go with Pirlo over Gerrard. Balzaretti is not as good of an option imo.

Good evening gents. I know this game is all about "ifs" and "buts"........

If Germany kept a clean sheet last night .. I'd swear I'd be number one in the world right now.

Extra 20 points ... you'd be closer but definitely not top, most in the top 10 also have 2+

Cheers, good rank yourself. We'll see how it pans out, there's a long way to go and there's a lot of players who are going to take a lot of risks

Very much. Like Reus, Muller, CR7 etc. But I will look for a way of including Iniesta in my team, even it may cost me one less "active" player. At least, that is my feeling now.

Not thinking of taking a cheaper Italian defender should they progess and upgrading elsewhere?

I had Iniesta up til now but he's just not showing any value. Despite my call on an England v Portugal final, my fantasy head says Germany v Spain/Portugal so I'm building around those three with the emphasis on Germany

Think Iniesta will come through like Özil did, but I understand those that want to jump ship.

My head also says Germany v Spain/Portugal and I will try to build that way. This is why I do not understand the decision of spending value on Lescott/Barzagli.

Fair comment, but they would be swopped out in the event of a German win and so I'll get the money back. We will know the Spanish line-up, so if Fabs doesn't start he becomes Iniesta and Muller becomes Torres

A few risks there - Reus, Oliveira and I'd argue Muller too. Looks a good team if you're chasing a lead.

I can afford the punt as I have 13 who will play some part, Oliviera is a bonus but with Postiga out he should feature, could even start after Almeida's mare
