If you handed the armband to Xabi Alonso tonight, you need not bother with the “stick or twist” dilemma. The Spain midfielder returned the highest individual score so far in EURO 2012, with two goals, a clean sheet and five recovered balls helped him to a staggering 28 point captaincy haul. For the rest of us, though, there’s still plenty to ponder over.

In truth, tonight was a disappointment. The top four in our Captain Poll – David Silva, Andres Iniesta, Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas – all failed to pick up any attacking returns, with Torres’ owners left frustrated after he was omitted from the first XI by Vicente Del Bosque. France were woeful and offered little going forward – after all the pre-tournament hype, they grabbed just three goals over their four matches and limp home after a lacklustre performance. Time to contemplate tomorrow’s options, then, as we rundown the likely armband contenders.

Italy will be reliant on Andrea Pirlo to continue the superb form he produced over the three Group C games. The Juventus midfielder was the only player to produce attacking returns in all of the Azzurri’s matches and is by far their top scorer in the McDonald’s game, with 19 points accrued. Antonio Cassano is the only forward to start every match so far and will arrive in confident form, having broken his scoring duck in the previous encounter against Republic of Ireland. Mario Balotelli impressed in a brief sub appearance against Giovanni Trapattoni’s troops with a superbly taken finish and could replace Antonio Di Natale in the first XI, while Thiago Motta may flourish in a role in “the hole” if Cesare Prandelli continues with his 4-3-1-2 system.

For England, Steven Gerrard has been the main protagonist – similar to Pirlo, he has also produced the goods in all three of his appearances and, with 18 points on the board, leads the way for Roy Hodgson’s side. Wayne Rooney announced his return from suspension by nodding home the only goal in the win over Ukraine and will carry the hopes of plenty Fantasy managers – with just 8.2% ownership, he could prove a decent differential tomorrow evening. Danny Welbeck offers a mid-price armband alternative to his United team mate up front, while Ashley Young is afforded the perfect opportunity to prove his worth on the left flank, after a below-par tournament thus far.

    So with the pressure on the UEFA council to deliver something equally exciting for fpl, this is what we have come up with. So without further ado, let me lay out the big picture (Version 1.2) -:

    a) We get 5 leagues started based on – EPL, Serie A, La Liga, Bundesliga, Ligue 1

    b) All 5 of these leagues host the popular 1-1 format. During the registration, you will be asked to choose your top 5 teams in order of preference.

    c) It is scheduled for either half the year – gw1 to gw 19 (Half of the year). (still undecided though).

    d) The fixtures and scores displayed live in a table for each league….This table will be in the format of A vs B. So it will be much easier to read. Think of it like the fpl table with sliders and all. Something like-:

    Arsenal – 32 vs 48-Sunderland
    Manchester City – 52 vs 38-Tottenham
    QPR – 42 vs 68-Man Utd
    …………………
    ……………..
    Previous Gw Upcoming Gw

    We will also have a league standings table. Once every gameweek is done, the standings will automatically be updated for all the leagues. This league table will be sorted by default for pts, just like any other premier league table.

    e) We are likely to move the site to wordpress as it offers a much more superior and intuitive interface. This site will have entries, polls, thoughts, of the community. WordPress has guest member login privilege which will allow members like Isacki, Jkisthe, Doos, Snowy, Gaz etc to post stuff directly on the site even though they may or may not be a member of the UEFA council. It also has a great commenting system. (This site – Fantasy Football Scout is also built on wordpress)

    f) Also as we have noticed, and I am sure we all agree, we have been a little biased towards the deadzone community. Look for new members to be added shortly to reduce that.

    g) Now the plan is that both the Champions League and Europa, take their participants from here.

    Proposed format for qualification

    UCL -: a) top 5 teams in each league - 5x5 + A(Set of 7 teams)
    Europa -: b) next 5 teams in each league - 5x5 + B(Set of 7 teams)

    A and B are a set of teams chosen by the council. Past winners - ENR(UCL) + Duffman(Europa) if they have not qualified automatically will be a guaranteed selection as one of the teams.

    Rest can be new members, league members, special contributors, scout-team members or even UEFA council members but they only have 14 seats to fight for.
    To keep things interesting for people at the lower half of the table, we were thinking that the bottom 4/5 teams will not be allowed for the selection to the UCL or the Europa under any circumstances. NO EXCEPTIONS.

    As Parmtree pointed out, to avoid Stoke vs Madrid, you will be re-assigned a team for the UEFA CL/Europa.

    In conclusion
    Please feel free to discuss, tell me what you think of this idea. I am hoping to hear from “Ya, these bigwigs might just have stumbled onto something solid”, to “As usual, the council have simply lost it”

    Let me stress no final decision has been taken on this. It is just a rough outline of what we have in mind. I would specially like to know whether you will be interested in this format for the 19gws/38gws? Also do you like the idea of choosing the league you are in?

      *it has also been proposed that you will not be reassigned a team for the CL/europa to increase pride in your club. this way if you qualify as newcastle or sevilla then you get to represent those teams in CL or europa.

      which do you guys prefer?

      Fantastic.

      Personally i think if you are prepared to put this amount of effort in, then you may as well go for the whole hog and do the full season.

      I reckon if you only did up to GW19, you would end up wanting to do something extra anyway so you may as well just go for it in the first place.

      I think choosing your own league is a good idea as long as none are seen as more superior to the others, I take it the idea is to have them all on a level footing?

      Another thought on GW1-19, for the second half you could always see it as a "second season" and use relegation and promotion in the first half of the season to determine who is in what league for the second half?

        our thoughts were to have a second season gw 19-38 if the interest has not died down. bottom 3 from each league would be relegated (lose their spot) and we would have another application process to bring in new replacements

        not to mention we will have CL and europa in the second half of the season!

      Wow. I like the looks of the 5 leagues thing. If granted entry, I would personally not need to chose one of the leagues (would go with teams from several leagues). Basing the UCL on these leagues is a good idea, but it seems that idea needs a little more ironing out (we want the current teams in it, don't we?).

        the current idea is you pick your league first, team alloccation would come after that. the advantage of this is it allows you to try to join a league with those you want to compete against. so perhaps a bunch of dead zoners all decide we want to be in one league together and compete against each other! that sort of a thing

        and wouldn't you rather be able to represent your same team in the CL or europa. so if you end up being stuck with wigan but qualify them for CL wouldn't you want to pull some upsets in the CL? 😉

          I like the randomness of having to chose 1 team from each league and then seeing where you end up. That would appear to be more fair and stop "fixing".

          I think keeping the team you have for the CL & Europa is the way to go!

            what do you mean stop "fixing"?

            the idea was like i said that you can decide with a small group of people a league you want to join so that you can all compete against one another. so for example the council may decide we all want to compete against each other in the same league, or a group of dead zoners may want to compete against each other, etc

      This sounds great, it's really coming together. I'd prefer a 38 game season to make it more epic but that's just my opinion.

      Maybe I missed it in the post but how does qualification for the first season of UCL/EL work? Or is Europe not starting until GW20?

        see my comment above in this long discussion about the 19 game season!

        europe doesn't start until gw 20 or maybe a couple week after, we'll have to determine when the best start date is. qualification as per what pratik posted above is as follows:

        UCL -: a) top 5 teams in each league – 5×5 + A(Set of 7 teams)
        Europa -: b) next 5 teams in each league – 5×5 + B(Set of 7 teams)

        A and B are a set of teams chosen by the council. Past winners – ENR(UCL) + Duffman(Europa) if they have not qualified automatically will be a guaranteed selection as one of the teams.

        Europe will be like ENR's UCL/Europa format last year. Some-time around after the international break.

        Hey, wanted to tell you, we did discuss the 4-tier system, but didn't go that way. Mostly because each of these leagues have a different number of teams.

        My reasons for for why it's 19gw's over 38 gw's

        a) It gives us a chance to evaluate things mid-way in the year. If we have to make any changes, to the format, pimp things up we can do the same. Even though it does not mirror the real style format, it allows us to end it with a bang around Christmas

        b) If by any chance, we see that interest has died down, we have the option of closing the league then. I don't want to commit to a 38 match, and then pull the plug in the middle of the tournament. Or reach a stage, where no-one cares who's winning or losing.

        c) At the end of the tournament we can recruit those for the UCL from here itself.

        d) Gives a chance to new members who have fallen in love with our format, to join at the start of 2013.

        If this format goes down a hit, we can easily extend it to 38 games for next year, and the year after that....

    I am gambling on a Spain V Germany final.

    How does my team look?

    Neuter Tvorvas
    Pique Arbeloa Alba Hummels Coentreo
    Fortounis Busquets Iniesta Ozil Schweinsteiger
    Torres Olivera Almeida

    (There is too much uncertainty in strikers to place faith and cash in them. I think a Germany V Spain final will be low scoring and also a Germany V Italy/England semi Final).

    For the final

    Coentreo -> Boateng
    Almeida -> Pedro

    Reading back over the last page or two I see quite a bit of criticism of Spain's style of play and a few coming round to the idea of backing the Spanish defence heavily.

    SF 1st Draft.

    Neuer

    Pepe // Boateng // Alba

    Ozil // Khedira // Joao Moutinho // Busquetes

    Torres // CR7 // Rooney

    Hoping for a Spain-Germany final in which case
    Pepe--->Piqué
    Joao Moutinho--->Xabi Alonso
    Rooney--->Müller
    CR7--->Silva
    11 starters for the final

    Any suggestions?

    So after drafting a team above I have taken in the helpful advice. How does this updated team look?

    Neuer Tvorvas
    Pique Arbeloa Alba Hummels Lahm
    Fortounis Busquets Iniesta Ozil Makos
    Torres* Olivera Ronaldo

    If he starts. Otherwise I would consider another striker when team news is announced.

    Can you pick players that are already eliminated in the semifinals, for example a 4.0 goalkeeper just as a filler?
