Quarter Finals – Day Four – Dugout Discussion

It’s the last of the quarter-finals this evening as England take on Italy for a place in the last four against Germany. After tonight’s eagerly-anticipated clash, Fantasy managers have a three-day wait until the first of the semi-finals get underway on Wednesday evening, when defending champions Spain take on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. As always, we’ve opened up the Dugout Discussion ahead of kick-off:

The team news is in and is as follows…

Roy Hodgson keeps faith in the same XI that saw off Ukraine in the previous match, with Wayne Rooney partnering Danny Welbeck up top. Steven Gerrard will be looking to keep up the form that has harvested returns in all three of his games thus far – his battle against Daniel De Rossi in the midfield area looks key to his nation’s chances of progressing.

For Italy, Cesare Prandelli makes three changes from the game against Republic of Ireland. Leonardo Bonucci replaces the injured Giorgio Chiellini at centre-half, while Thiago Motta and Antonio Di Natale both drop out, replaced by Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli respectively.

England Starting XI: Hart; Johnson, Terry, Lescott, Cole; Milner, Gerrard, Parker, Young; Rooney, Welbeck

Italy Starting XI: Buffon; Abate Barzagli Bonucci Balzaretti; Marchisio, Pirlo, Di Rossi; Montolivo; Cassano, Balotelli

    Strange that Balotelli faffs so much in front of goal because its something that a striker lacking confidence does. Balotelli doesnt strike me as the kind of player that lacks confidence either.

      He's over confident and tries the spectacular at every chance he gets instead of just taking the simplest and most effective route to scoring. He's such a talented player, he just needs to lose the attitude and he could be a world class striker...

    Saying this as a Man U fan , i'm worried with Rooney and Welbeck tonight, still think it was the right choice to start them. Rooney doesn't look sharp at all.

    Quick either/or question: I've currently got the luxury goalkeeper combination of Neuer and Rui Patrício. If England lose tonight, I'll need to sell one of them at the end of the game for Butland in order to save money. So which one would you sell?

    a) Neuer (€7.0m)
    b) Rui Patrício (€5.5m)

    Currently have one other German defender, and no Portuguese:

      keep the one you think will go further, otherwise you will have to use 2 FTs on keepers instead of 1.

      Was meaning to ask you,. any news of whether Gomez will return for the semi, or if Reus will keep his place? Low's comments after the game seem to suggest he may keep his front 3 in tact.

            The tabloid newspaper Bild, which got the German team right on Friday, is now predicting that Müller and Podolski are likely to return to the starting line-up in the semi final, and that Klose will keep his spot.

            But it’s way too early to guess at this, I think – Löw won’t have made his mind up before knowing who the opponents are, and Bild are clearly enjoying the limelight after their line-up coup ahead of the Greece match.

    Seriously though as an Italy fan it is clear what England need to do.
    Milner is so defensive that Balzaretti has given up defending and is the out ball
    If England bring on Walcott at half time then he will get pushed back completely
