Who are the best Romelu Lukaku replacements in FPL?

Romelu Lukaku (£11.7m) is poised to miss Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) after injuring his ankle in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League win over Malmo.

Thomas Tuchel may give us a more exact prognosis on the Belgian’s fitness in Friday’s pre-match press conference but the premium FPL forward is seemingly set to sit out Saturday’s home fixture against Norwich City at the very least, with the Chelsea boss saying Lukaku would miss “some games”.

Over three million Fantasy bosses owned the Belgium international after Gameweek 8 but the mass exodus has begun, with around 400,000 of those having already ditched him at the time of writing.

So who are the best replacements for the injured Lukaku in FPL?

We take a look at the options available to Fantasy managers in the article below.

All our stats and graphics are taken from our Premium Members Area, where there is currently a seven-day free trial on offer.

BEST LUKAKU REPLACEMENTS: PREMIUM FORWARDS

JAMIE VARDY

Vardy on target again as Man Utd's defensive issues continue in Gameweek 8 2

Top among FPL forwards for transfers in ahead of Gameweek 9, Jamie Vardy (£10.6m) is the go-to Lukaku replacement for many Fantasy managers.

It’s not so much the immediate fixtures – Brentford (a), Arsenal (h), Leeds (a) and Chelsea (h) is a mixed bag over the next four Gameweeks – as the form, with Vardy now the Premier League’s joint-top goalscorer after scoring on five occasions in his last four appearances.

Some of us may have wanted to wait for Gameweek 13 and a ticker-topping four-game stretch for Leicester City but moving for Vardy now at least saves a transfer further down the line, and opposition difficulty doesn’t seem to be much of a barrier to the veteran hitman anyway: last season, for example, he bagged 10 goals and assists combined in 12 fixtures against the ‘big six’ sides.

It’s true that 50% of his attacking returns this season have come against Norwich City and Burnley, two of the weakest defences in the division.

And the return to the starting XI of Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.0m) is also worth monitoring, as the Nigerian was the bigger goal threat of the two when Brendan Rodgers paired them up top towards the final third of last season.

Vardy hasn’t been adversely affected so far, with totals of six shots and five attempts in the box in the last two Gameweeks in keeping with his output in 2021/22 before that, and it has been Iheanacho who has been playing slightly wider and deeper.

Above: Touch heatmaps for Vardy (left) and Iheanacho (right) over the last two Gameweeks

One word of caution for medium-term holders of Vardy is that the 34-year-old striker is currently enjoying midweek breathers in the UEFA Europa League to aid with his recovery between league games. More Premier League matches replace those European nights throughout November and December, with nine top-flight games to contest in the space of 35 days from Gameweeks 13-21. The Leicester striker may not escape a benching or two over that period, then, but the same could be argued for huge swathes of the FPL players in our teams.

HARRY KANE

Kane and Wilson enter FPL differential conversation ahead of Gameweek 9

The August curse extended to mid-October this year, with Harry Kane (£12.1m) only opening his Premier League account in last week’s win over Newcastle United.

As is the case with Vardy, it’s not until next month that Spurs’ fixtures really leap off the page – a four-match period from Gameweeks 12-15 looking like the ideal time to pounce on the Lilywhites.

Kane’s extra cost is the main deterrent considering that Vardy and an alternative route into the Spurs attack, Son Heung-min (£10.1m), can be snapped up for some £1.5m-£2.0m less.

Kane’s underlying stats have really stepped up a gear over the last four Gameweeks, as he’s joint-top among FPL forwards for shots alongside Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) and Vardy.

While plenty of those efforts are coming from distance, the typically dead-eyed Kane has still had more shots on target than any of his positional rivals – and the same number of big chances as Ronaldo.

Still, Son is outgunning Kane for big chances, shots in the box and expected goal involvement (xGI) even over this four-match period, so justifying that extra £2.0m outlay if it’s a ‘one or the other’ dilemma is not easy.

THE OTHERS

Cristiano Ronaldo dominates his premium peers stats-wise over the course of the season but some stiff fixtures, not to mention United’s iffy form and inability to carve out a single ‘big chance’ for him over the last three Gameweeks, leads us away from the veteran Portuguese.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£9.9m) is arguably the pick of the rest from the premium pool. Having found the net in each of his last three appearances at the Emirates, the Gabon international and his Gunners teammates have four more very favourable home encounters against Aston Villa, Watford, Newcastle and Southampton between now and Gameweek 16.

Trips to Leicester and Manchester United needn’t be feared from a defensive perspective either, with those two hapless backlines on just one clean sheet apiece in 2021/22.

A lack of big chances this season (two, fewer than 17 other forwards) is the main downside and he’s having to rely on his historically strong goal conversion rate to maintain his output. A possible recall for Alexandre Lacazette (£8.3m) would also presumably see Aubameyang shunted to the left flank, as has happened many times before.

Gabriel Jesus (£8.6m) is being routinely overlooked by many of us, with the week-to-week rotation risk and a ‘reverse out of position’ tag cited as the main reasons. And yet, despite registering fewer minutes than 15 other FPL forwards, he is still third among players in his Fantasy position for points.

The no-shows and one-pointers will be as regular as the double-digit hauls, nevertheless still resulting in a decent points-per-match average (Jesus’s is currently 5.90). Strong benches will be needed to negotiate those rests, so with many of us taking punts on rotation risks such as Phil Foden (£8.0m), Reece James (£5.5m) and Ben Chilwell (£5.7m), the Man City man may be one gamble too many.

BEST LUKAKU REPLACEMENTS: MID-PRICE/BUDGET FORWARDS

IVAN TONEY

Toney off the mark as injuries and Covid impact Villa 4

Lukaku’s injury doesn’t just allow FPL managers to move sideways between premium forwards but downgrade to a mid-price or budget option in order to reallocate funds elsewhere, perhaps with a view to recruiting Son, Kevin De Bruyne (£11.9m) or the man who looks set to lead Chelsea’s line in Lukaku and Timo Werner‘s (£8.6m) absences, the ‘out of position’ Kai Havertz (£8.1m).

One such cut-price striker is Ivan Toney (£6.4m), whose Brentford side sit top of our Season Ticker from now until Gameweek 18.

You mean the Liverpool team who have scored 6 more goals than anyone so far this season in the league, 11 goals in 3 UCL games against some of their best defences in their relevant leagues and also 3 in the League Cup for good measure.

12 games played, 36 goals scored

Assuming you have Mo then the Liverpool attack is fairly covered though so I wouldn't say Jota is a must have. But I wouldn't say Foden is must have either as City have so many attacking options it's impossible to say who will play or get the attacking returns.

        So I'd say go C

Havertz the best option for the next couple of weeks I think

What was the point of the top bit going on about Liverpool's goals? Then saying C?

Was meant in response to the reply below saying not A

I'd say B is the worst option. Wasting a transfers to go from Jota to Foden would be odd to me. Both equal rotation risks, Jota a bit cheaper and playing the team who's scoring more goals so far this season.

I have Jota and Foden myself!

As much as I personally dislike Ronaldo AND think he's not doing much for ManU at the moment AND think Haveretz should score at least once against Norwich... I think it's entirely possible that Haveretz + Vardy will sit at like 12 points and Benrahma + Ronaldo will sit at like 10-14. In theory Haveretz and Vardy might have a higher ceiling but taking a hit for that.. I wouldn't.

      I'm kind of in agreement

Havertz is normally not my type of FPL player - but there's just been an alignment of several stars thatprobably happens once in millenia

How often are we going to get Chelsea's strikers all being injured dramatically increasing his chances of a start, lining up with a fixture list that reads [NOR, new, BUR, International Break]?

He can smash too - he's proved that before at the tail end of last season - so it's a punt I can totally get on board with

Especially if you're chucking the captaincy in along with it to exponentiate the potential gains

He's not guaranteed anything, but I'm thinking if you give him a start against Norwich 100 times, he's probably returning something in a massive amount of those 100 games - and double returning or more in a fairly large proportion as well

He's a pretty high ceiling 3-game punt before moving to Son post the IB basically

      1. Mr.K
        • 10 Years

You don't like Son against WestHam or the current ManU defence next week? I'm on a wildcard and Haveretz-then-Son was one of the things I considered too but Son's in his current form should do well also over the next three "red" games so I hesitate.

Love this idea. I can afford it for (an additional) -4 by moving saka to him but was going to move for foden next week vs palace instead for free.

The 3 week placeholder for son idea I really like and it’s a tactic I wish I’d used for Lukaku with Auba (like Marcus) or vardy.

There have been very few times he's scored more than 1 in a match throughout his career

I think he's worth getting in if can use FTs for it, but not worth a hit.

I have Werner, so currently have Toney off the bench to replace him, with Livramento and Brownhill making up the playing bench now.
I could get Havertz in for Brownhill and replace Werner with a 4.5 FWD but would be a -4 and give me a weaker bench to an extent.
I'll probably do nothing and see if Broja starts, if he does I'll like do Werner to him and free up money to upgrade Ramsdale to Mendy next GW

    Ramsdale

Tierney as you have Ramsdale for the Arsenal defence already

Saka missed at least most training this week so assume he won't play 90 minutes, with their depth unlikely to start and be risked I expect.

Elyounoussi I like but seems best for bench #1

Really like your team, great balance.
Quite similar to mine in terms of price points and formation. I went Foden and Jota over Son and Saka basically on my WC last week. Annoyingly I dropped Antonio for Werner, in large for their game against Norwich for a differential punt!

Who would you replace them with? Was considering Toney, but reluctant to double up on Brentford.

At last someone else on the same page on the Brentford double-up!
I think having both is mad, I think with the price points in their positions Toney is currently the better option, but the next couple of weeks might change that with Edouard or Broja make waves. Or indeed ASM with Wilson back and a new manager imminent.

I think Edouard is probably safe starting this week and Livramento is a good option anyway.

Bench Manquillo, Normann, Livra in reverse order I would and roll the FT.

This weekend might tell you a lot about the prospects of Broja and Edouard so I'd wait until more info than potentially wasting a FT now.

Thanks, Tarby. Currently on WC so the FT doesn't matter.
Could do Mbeumo + Edouard to Toney and Townsend/Gallagher. I like the Edouard punt myself, but could backfire for sure. Still, worst FPL start for the last decade so hey, some risk is due.
Can't see any good replacements for Broja in that price bracket and any other moves well mess up the rest.

Basically, left with picking 2 ATT and 1 MID for 17,3.

I’m with you on the double up being a bit overkill but Raphinia/Bamford did alright last season.

There are a lot of 5.5 options right now (Everton mids, Gallagher) which is far more than last season (soucek) so having 1 in your squad is ok. Any more is overkill and I’m going to stick with Toney.

Yeah Raphinha and Bamford is a good comparison. Bamford was crazy good value for nearly 200 points, I don't see Toney getting close to that, it's currently possible that no forward will beat that this season!

I'm totally with Dammit. Lots of 5.5ish mids at the moment, and there are a few 6.5ish fwds so plenty of options and no need for Brentford double.

Your other option is ignore the Broja option and for your 17.3 go:
              Brownhill + Toney + Edouard

I think you might have save 0.1 for that now though. Could do Normann to Gilmour or Manquillo to Johnson

Best of luck however you go! Ultimately I like your WC either way anyway!

You've both convienced me to return to Toney. Thanks!

I actually like your no-Broja idea even though I get two weak midfielders.
Was on Brownhill earlier, but then let him go for Normann.

Only issue is that I'm ending up with a non-playing asset. Both Gilmour and Johnson are lacking minutes, but could go Dias over Cancelo finding that 0,1.

Chilwell + Dias is 11,9 vs Cancelo + Rudiger at 12.

Thanks for input both of you. Was in the need for some input after a miserable first 8GWs 🙂

Which 2 to bench from below? Thinking B & E at the moment. If I thought Armstrong would start I'd play him.

    A - TAA v Man Utd (A)
    B - Tierney Aston Villa (H)
    C - Livramento v Burnley (H)
    D - Raphinha v Wolves (H)
    E - Armstrong v Burnley (H)

Never had Lukaku. Would you keep ronaldo for pool if you have him or ditch him for someone else for free? If yes... Who?

Are you planning to keep him?
If you have him hold for this week, especially if you dont want anyone else. If you want to ditch however, the article has ideas of nreplacements to suit your budget.

    2ft 0.1itb. Thoughts?

    Guaita
    Cresswell Cancelo Rudiger
    Salah Jota Grealish Raphinha Sarr
    Lukaku* Antonio

    Foster Reguilon Lowton Davis*

    A) Lukaku, Jota to Edouard, KDB -4
    B) Lukaku, Jota to Son, Jimenez -4
    C) Lukaku to Vardy

Something else? Feel like i should have money to spend but no standout options.

Hey guys, should I take my first hit this season?

    Sanchez
    Trent Alonso Liv
    Salah Raph Jota Sarr
    Ronaldo Jimi Antonio

    Gunn Shaw Gilmour Williams

I really want Kane and havertz but I’m 0.1 short!

    Ronaldo, Jota and Alonso
    To
    Kane, Havertz and Chilwell (-4)

    Or

    Ronaldo and Jota
    Vardy and Havertz

Probably play Shaw since Alonso might be benched.

    Thanks
