The spot-kicks have been despatched, the Fantasy clean sheets are in the bag and Italy, deservedly, have clinched a place in the last four against Germany on Thursday evening. Now we have a three-day break in proceedings before Spain square up to Portugal on Wednesday and, with eight free transfers available to Fantasy managers in the McDonald’s game, plenty of options are being assessed prior to the 7.30pm deadline on June 27:

With so many doubts over who will lead the line for the defending champions, last-minute transfers are likely to come into play on Wednesday. The teams will be announced prior to the deadline, affording Fantasy managers the chance to tinker with their lineups before deciding on final selections.

Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas have started two games apiece in the middle of the attacking three and both have returned two goals thus far – whoever gets the nod against Paulo Bento’s side will surely see a flurry of transfers before 7.30pm. David Silva looks the only real secure starter of Spain’s classified forwards in the McDonald’s game but has failed to produce any returns in his last couple of appearances. Xabi Alonso’s brace against France will see him pick up plenty interest, while Andres Iniesta’s owners are desperate for an upturn in performance, bearing in mind the midfielder has provided just a single assist over the tournament to date. Turning to the backline, and Jordi Alba in particular, could prove dividend – the left-back is the highest scoring player in the McDonald’s game and rolls up on the back of a 10 point haul against the French.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the obvious option for Portugal. Three goals in his last two games attests to his current form, with the 11.0 priced forward also hitting the woodwork a total of four times against Holland and Czech Republic. Up against Real Madrid team mate Alvaro Arbeloa on the flank, he has the potential to cause the Spaniards plenty of problems if Portugal can get their counter attack game working as they did against the Dutch. Nani is more of a differential with 14% ownership to Ronaldo’s 42% and has provided a pair of assists so far, while Hugo Almeida is likely to lead the line in light of Helder Postiga’s hamstring injury. Joao Moutinho has also matched Nani’s attacking returns, while Pepe’s resilience at the back, in addition to a goal against Denmark, has earned him 20 points, the same amount as Ronaldo.

    What's wrong with this team

    Casillas/Who cares?
    Alba/Arbeloa/Hummels/Perriera/Who cares?
    Busquets/Alonso/Pirlo/Who cares/Who Cares?
    Silva/CR7/Gomez

      (IMO)

Pereira - I don't see a Portugal CS. They weren't tested at all by the Czechs. In all the group matches they conceded including 2 to Denmark. I'm pretty sure Spain will get at least 1. Their defence is not Mourinho-style Real (or Inter) quality despite having the odd player from there.

Busquets - very little upside, only recovered balls, and if you're only playing 3 mids that leaves you with very little players with upside.
Alonso - basically comes down to whether you think Spain will get a penalty. I don't see him repeating a goal from open play, the defender allowed him to run from very deep.

CR7 - Poor chance to goal conversion ratio (Czech or Denmark games if you want to see it in action). Fluffed loads of 1 on 1s, even. Won't get many chances against Spain, so I don't see him scoring.
Gomez - You can't afford him not to start and reports so far are not clear.
Silva - The Spanish attack is an expensive nightmare for points. The only person I'd recommend for a goal is the center-forward, who you can find out on deadline day.

If not Pereira, Coentrao looks decent as well for the assists, even if you're not looking forward to a Portugal clean sheet.

For the forwards, as you said, the centre forward or whoever is leading the number 9 role for Spain and Italians forwards as well, I guess. I'm thinking of Balotelli or Cassano, but most likely Super Mario.

Maybe Coentrao yeah as he's up against the weaker (but also the more defensive) of the fullbacks in Arbeloa... but I'd be amazed if Portugal get many chances to attack. Will look a bit expensive if the clean sheet goes.

I was thinking about the Italian forwards because they're cheaper, but then I reckoned, gotta ask yourself, do you really think they'll score? Because if they don't you could use the money saved by downgrading them to Mr 4.5 to improve a whole bunch of players.

So basically, no one is a good choice for the Semis because you're either sure they're not playing, they're not worth the money, or their team won't get a CS

Not far off to be honest 😉

There are players I actually don't turn my nose up at, they are
              German, Spanish defenders
Nailed on German/Spanish attacking midfielders (Ozil/Iniesta)
Pirlo just because he is involved in everything Italy do.
Whichever bargains start in the Spain/Portugal match we get the teamsheets for (Fabregas/Torres/Nelson Oliveira??/Pedro??)
And a handful of the cheapest attacking punts you can find.

Basically, the teamsheets hold the key.

So the fact that Ozil and Iniesta have less than nothing at all throughout this entire tournament doesn't make you think that they are overpriced nonentities? You'd rather keep believing that they must do something at some point rather than accept that there are less expensive options putting up better numbers in this event than they are even though they shouldn't be? You can keep telling me until the cows come home that Iniesta is the man, but the scoreboard keeps telling me that Busqueta keeps putting up similar numbers for 3.0 less and the same could be said for Khedira Vs. Ozil.

I do wonder why you asked people to tell you what was wrong with your team if you didn't want to hear it.

If you have watched every game you judge the players on potential, not just the points that come up on the website at the end of the day. Even on that score, you're off the mark on Ozil. Iniesta is another matter, I was happy to have him on the back of his performances in the group stage but he seems less involved with each game and I'm 50/50 on him.

Football is a low scoring game and the nature of each game changes depending on the opposition. If you want to believe choosing Khedira, Alonso and Busquets is better because they are cheaper and two of them have scored playing way out of their normal positions, be my guest. In any one game they could luck it. But on probability, I say you are wrong.

I absolutely want to hear what people thought was wrong with my choices, but I then feel that I have the option of debating their criticisms. Thousands of athletes have retired having great potential that is never realized. Doesn't mean they weren't great athletes or shouldn't have performed under different circumstances. I have watched every match of this tournament and just don't think that Ozil or Iniesta have been as involved as their talent/price in the McD's game warrants. Sometimes guys who shouldn't be performing do, and sometimes guys that should just don't. As they say in the stock market, the trend is your friend, and even if guys like Buquets and Khedira put up a few less points than studs like Ozil and Iniesta in the SF's and F's, those few meager points will more than be made up by being able to afford players at other positions that you wouldn't be able to have because of the salary difference.

You asked me to rate your team, and rated the players in it based on who you chose. You have only three playing mids and two of them are recognized as defensive midfielders, with even Pirlo playing in the position of one but given the way he's used to ping assists around, I am willing to overlook that. I think it is entirely correct to tell you that you are not giving yourself enough upside and that other players will give you more upside. Given their roles, do Ozil (nailed on "central winger") and Iniesta (nailed on left forward) have a higher upside than Busquets and Alonso? I would be fascinated to hear you explain how they don't.

As to saving money to improve players at other positions, as I already explained to you, I don't think the big hitters you've actually chosen are very promising.

Before we get stuck in another loop, I would suggest you downgrade your forwards and fill up some of those empty spots. That indeed would improve your chances of getting points.

I reckon the Italian forwards will score. My basis is that the Germans have been conceding couple of goals lately and I expect the Italians to shape up their finishing and then at least score one or two against the Germans. One of them from Mario, as I hope.

I do think the Germans switched off at the back a bit in their last two matches because both were against big underdogs. They appear to be a side happy to outscore smaller teams, but play tight against teams with stars. That said, there is always the possibility they are actually not that tight at the back. They do get forward a lot and you could say they are vulnerable to the counter.

I'm sure you watched the match tonight... I'm surprised you're willing to put your money on Mario after his abject finishing... but Cassano or Di Natale could be better bets than I thought.

Finally back! Work made me miss the entire 90 minutes of the game, but I got back just in time for E.T. and penalties.

Such drama! Almost as dramatic as me and Jonty's last day turnaround in the cup.

    Bring on the SFs!

Seems like there was a lot of drama on the forums. I'm almost glad I missed it.

        It was unbelievable.

We went into the final day 13 points behind with this:

Barzagli x3 VS Pirlo + Welbeck

The only way we'd win is if Italy kept a clean sheet, Barzagli get at least 7 points, and Pirlo and Welbeck do nothing.

We won by 2 points 😀 Barzagli is me and Jonty's lucky charm. He won us our last group game too with 7 points which inched us across the finish.

Cor the drama! So Barzagli got you enough recovered balls too! And two of the main dangermen got nothing!

I would have written that match off already.

Will keep it brief because bedtime is looming, but any strategy you're committing to for the semis? I vaguely recall you want all Germany and some of Spain/Portugal or something, but can't remember properly. Anything else would be interesting too.

Yeah the best way to play the semis imo is to fully back one team to progress.

I'm going with Germany. I can't see Italy beating this German team.

Then you split the difference in the other semi final.

            i.e.

            5 Germany
            4 Spanish
            2 Portugal

That way, 4 transfers, and you field a full XI no matter who gets through in the Spain - Portugal game.

Conversely, you could fully back Spain and do:

            5 Spain
            4 Germany
            2 Italy

That also yields a full final XI too. But I think Germany have a better chance of progressing, hence why I'm going with the first strategy.

Right. That does follow. So you're only screwed if there's two upsets which looks pretty unlikely.

And if there is an upset you should definitely be able to afford the transfers because the eliminated players from the favourite team will be more expensive.

So since these add up to eleven (ha ha), are you definitely going with four non-players?

Looking like the latter for me.

I'm looking at how to do my CS (defender + keepers) split between Spain and Germany. I'm leaning towards Spain 3 Germany 2 as I really fancy the Spain CS. The remaining 1 will probably go to Abate, the last defensive bargain in the game? 😉

The well-known options in midfield and forwards look a bit stale right now, I'm wondering to what extent to punt on "2nd string players" starting.

Ok, quick 2 mins press release from Germany

Jonty and Camzy, co-managers of Germany would like to thank Herr Barzagli, who for the last two weeks has single handedly kept us in this competition.

It was a nail biter last night, with Jonty's captaining of the Italian defender the only option to overturn the might of Poland. When Barzagli's yellow card came in it looked bleak again for Germany, but thankfully he went on to rack up the recovered ball points and end Poland's dreams by just two points.

Germany have a solid track record of outrageous jamminess, having qualified from group B with the lowest joint score. Croatia awaits, but can this tiny, unusually flagged nation really be a match for the sheer outrageous flukability of Germany.

Germany vs Italy - high scoring?

Anyone? Therefore, we must invest heavily in Portugal/Spain/Germany/Italy. 😛

Like this breakdown, this is my kind of thing.

Definitely got my eye on Abate (Maggio's ban must mean he starts) and Nelson Oliveira.

Custodio is a classic holding midfielder who might have a chance of playing against Spain and racking up dem RB's, yo!

Wouldn't touch Rui though of course. Not unless you reckon a Rui/Neuer combination is affordable

        Yeah it's what I figured.

I have two drafts, and they don't look much alike...

        #1

        Neuer
        Hummels, Boateng, Pepe, Alba, Pique
        Ozil, Fabregas, Reus
        Ronaldo, Silva, Oliveira

        #2

        Neuer
        Hummels, Abate, Alba, Pique, Arbeloa
        Ozil, Fabregas, Pirlo
        Klose, Silva, Oliveira

Basically, it all comes down to whether or not I think Spain or Germany have a better chance at progressing and scoring well.

            Not sure.

            Klose 65%
            Fabregas 80%
            Reus 60%
            Oliveira 10%

But Oliveira is bench fodder for sure, so I'm not counting on him playing.

Both look pretty solid to me, with #1 edging it.

Strangely, I'm really looking at Ronaldo long and hard now. Losing him would free up so much budget, and I think the max he will get is a single goal, and even that is more likely not to happen. We kind of know that deep down, otherwise we wouldn't put so many Spanish defenders in our teams.

9 players eliminated... and 8 free transfers. Worth taking a point hit to get the last option, or just keep an eliminated budget player on the team? Since its just two games now I'm thinking leave him in, but it may just add to my problems in the final too...

Imo they didn't, they were simply outplayed. The combination of Rooney marking Pirlo for only the first 15 minutes, and shocking ball retention, meant game over. They did have a surprising amount of chances though, but not as many as the Italians - who are the deserved winners (not often you have been able to say that in recent tournaments).

It would've been an absolutely injustice if Eng-er-land had've won the shootout. Asides from about 15 minutes in the first half, it was men against boys. Italy completely dominated, and only rubbish finishing let the game go that far.

I don't have a teams issue as I still haven't used my wildcard. Do you think I should have 1 bench in each position to stay flexible for any finalists? I'm 2nd in my league and I thought taking a risk and benching 2 FWDs would pay off in a spain-germany final.

I don't like Patricio, Portugal should concede against Spain. They conceded in the group games. Same for Coentrao. Busquets is cheap and certain to start, but assist/goal chances aren't likely, I was considering him too but IDK :/. Maybe put portuguese mid and a spanish defender?

          I have this:

          Casillas (lastuvka)
          abate arbeloa hummels badstuber (maniatis)
          pirlo schweinsteiger khedira iniesta +1
          silva oliveira +1

I'd go Fabregas/Varela. Forwards haven't been scoring all that much, and I can't see this being an overly high scoring game.

I wouldn't discount Busquets by the way - he racks up the recovered balls nicely, so is always likely to get a +1 or even +2 there. Almost as good as an assist, but far more likely.

You can bet on Alonso again but not for the third time. Same case happened with Johnny Evans. He scored a goal and a clean sheet. Next game, he assisted Rooney with the only goal against Fulham, if I remember correctly. Definitely not for the third straight time.

Your lineup looks decent. I'd suggest that you rid of Oliveira or do you not have extra cash left at hand for upgrades?

Hmm...thank you for replying. I will have zero transfers left if I confirm this team. I had Rui and Sifakis from the QF...I have 5.1m and 4m as the other two midfielders. If I switch back to Sifakis then I can upgrade Pilar to Xabi....or I could switch back the goalie and change Cassano to Oliveria. Then my team would look like

        Rui/4.5m

        Boateng/Alba/Periera/Abate/Balzaretti

        Ozil/Pirlo/Fabregas/Schweni/4m

Stick to one solid goalkeeper - Patricio/Neuer/Casillas/Buffon and have a 4m goalkeeper on the bench. That allows other upgrades.

I would like to bring in a 4m player...but I have only Sifakis at 4.5m. We can't transfer in players that are already eliminated no? So I'm stuck with him unless I transfer him for 2 solid keepers, but that limits my midfield options....the other option is to upgrade Rui with Casillas/Neuer but not sure if that's worth a transfer o.o'.

Ignore Sifakis on the bench. You're only going to use a solid 7m goalkeeper, including Patricio. Just concentrate on other areas. If you upgrade your goalkeeper to Rui and Casillas/Neuer, you are wasting a bit of money.

Gomez - faces competition from Klose so at the moment we aren't sure who will start but there's been a rumour that he might not start.
Ronaldo - against a possession dominating team. Ronaldo won't get much touch on the ball here and let alone shots on/off target.
Fabregas - depending on Vicente if he ever decides to play the false nine formation again.
Rest - if space is freed up from Gomez and Ronaldo, upgrade Custodio and Maniatis.

Reus, Torres and Oliveira - not certain to start.
Ronaldo - against a heavy possession dominating team. Won't get the ball much but reckon one goal.

Everyone seems to be loading up on either a set of Spanish players, or a set of German players. I think I am gonna stick with 4 from each team

    Rui patricio
    Hummels, Abate, Alba, Coentrao/Boateng
    Reus, Fabregas, Iniesta, Pirlo, Ozil
    Ronaldo, Cassano, Nelson Oliveria

I will wait for the line-up before I confirm.

Not so keen on Cassano. he has been a useless waste of money and space for me. Reus is a big risk, get Khedira or Alonso in place of him. I would upgrade the keeper to Neuer/Casillas as they are more likely to go through to the finals.

Gomez is unlikely to start. I would get more defenders and downgrade one of the strikers for RB points and CS potential.

OK may be not, but RB points can come in handy. I don't think all those 3 strikers would give you attacking points, while defenders can give you 3,4 points and if there is a cs, imagine how would that turn out.

I just feel only 11 players are needed with the limited cash available. Others seem to favour defenders; I prefer spending money in midfield/attack as this is where the bigger points are going to be.
