While Fantasy managers prepare their squads for tomorrow evening’s Euro 2012 semi-final between Spain and Portugal, some domestic news of significant Fantasy interest broke earlier on this morning. Already, we have our first double Gameweek of the season to prepare for thanks to Chelsea’s UEFA Super Cup duties against Atletico Madrid.

The Blues have revealed that their home game against Reading, scheduled for Saturday September 1, has been moved to Wednesday August 22 and immediately hands both clubs a double in the first Gameweek of the upcoming 2012/13 campaign, with a blank Gameweek 3 to follow.

Already, this is huge news for Fantasy managers and will surely play a significant part in the structuring of plenty squads ahead of the kick-off on August 18. Robert Di Matteo’s side will now travel to Wigan before playing host to the Royals, while Brian McDermott’s promoted side also have a home game against Stoke to consider.

Chelsea, in particular, have the kindest opening schedule of arguably any side – selecting three of their players for those opening pair of games now seems a tactic that many will employ in order to ensure their Fantasy seasons get off to a successful start. The likes of Gary Cahill, Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and even Fernando Torres will likely see strong investment prior to the big kick-off on the back of today’s news.

For now, then, it’s just a quick heads-up article to bring you up to date – as always, we’ve updated the season ticker to reflect the change in fixtures.

FFS Friendly World Cup Quarter-Finals Review

    Quarter Final 2

    Brazil defeated Urugay 123-107

In this battle of South American heavyweights it was Brazil, many people's favourites for the FWC who triumphed, scoring a convincing win over Uruguay. Forca Inter and Epic Fail now look forward to the semi-finals and a meeting with another South American side, Chile, led by Menly and Catmac. In truth Uruguay never got close to an upset as 4Vets (51) and Emperikal (56) were outgunned by Forca (61) and Epic (62). Matchday saw saw Brazil take early command as a CR7, and Rui Patricio double combined with Perreria (Epic) and Coentrao (Forca) easily overcame Uruguay's CR7 double and Rui Patricio. This theme continued in Matchday 2 as Forca's Ozil (c) gave him 14 points, whilst Epic claimed 8 from a non-Ozil (c). Uruguay were further hurt by double Neuer, whilst both sides had 1 Hummels, though Uruguay made some headway with a double Boateng plus an Ozil (c) from Vets and Khedira from Emperikal. In Matchday 3 there was a quadruple Iniesta on display, not that it made much difference, whilst Uruguay's lack of Spanish defence, mainly due to Vets doing a James_Fitz and leaving Alba on his bench, coupled with Brazil's double on Alba ultimately took the tie away from Uruguay. They made a last gasp effort to turn it around with double Lescott for 2 CS and Gerrard, but is was not enough to turn the tide and defeat the Brazilian juggernaut.

Not hugely excited from a fantasy perspective about Villa's new signing Karim El Ahmadi. Seven career goals since 2004, defensive midfielder and spent last year on loan to a middle east side. Plus his manager likes to rotate.

LONG POST ALERT: Just an overview of players that I thought performed well in the Euros and deserved a mention for their efforts. I’m aware the tournament isn’t over yet, I just thought Id get this out of the way and enjoy the semis/finals instead of analysing the play. If I forgot anyone that you think performed well just comment 🙂 cheers

Theodor Gebre Selassie – Starting at an initial price of 4.5, the Czech right back had not been mentioned much in the lead-up to the Euros. Was playing in the Czech League for FC Slovan Liberec. Throughout the friendlies, his potential moved more into the, in addition to his attack threat up the right flank. It wasn’t long before fantasy managers and real managers grew interest in the 25 year-old. Werder Bremen signed him up after their 1-0 quarterfinal defeat to Portugal. For some of us fantasy managers, Selassie returned a clean sheet and assist over his four Euro 2012 fixtures.

Alan Dzagoev – A young talent with a bright future ahead, many flocked onto this fantasy prospect at 7.5. Others, such as myself abandoned the thought, opting for a cheaper alternative like the 6.0 Shirokov. Dzagoev was allowed to play in a very attacking role on the right wing and started the tournament off with 2 lovely goals in the 4-1 win over Czech Republic. The 22 year-old then went on to score against Poland, before being sent out of the competition in a scoreless game for the Russians against Greece. Transfer rumours have him linked with a move to Arsenal.

Mario Mandzucik – Currently at Wolfsburg, the 26 year-old Croatian forward was priced at 5.0 and classified as a midfielder. Uncertainty surrounded his safety in the starting XI with Eduardo also in the run-in for a place. He opened Croatia’s first game against Ireland with a brace of goals. This meant many who captained him ended up with a nice 26-point haul. Furthermore, he knocked in his third against Italy, but his luck came to an end with a close 1-0 defeat to Spain, sending Croatia out of the tournament.

Andrea Pirlo – What needs to be said about the former Milan midfielder? Since the start of the competition, the 33 year-old has exceeded our expectations and over-performed in style. The veteran captain has magnificent vision in picking out passes, both long and short. He has proven his set piece abilities with a free kick scored against Croatia, assists against Ireland and Spain. Not to mention his cheekily chipped penalty kick that sent Italy to the semis to face Germany.

Joleon Lescott – The Man City defender was the cheapest route to the English back line, and with favourable group fixtures many wanted a piece. With Gary Cahill ruled out he was now certain and at 5.5 he was truly a bargain. Furthermore, he opened England’s first game against France with a lovely header from Stephen Gerrard’s free kick. He also notched up a clean sheet against Ukraine and Italy, before exiting the tournament on a penalty shootout against the Italians.

Michael Krohn-Deli – The Danish international was given the opportunity to play out on the left wing. At only 6.0 he was probably the best kept secret of the tournament. He opened the first match against the Netherlands with the only goal, with very few tempted to get him by this result. This was mainly down to tougher fixtures ahead against Portugal and Germany. Krohn-Deli then notched an assist against the former and a goal against the latter, despite going out of the group stages. His ownership remained less than 0.5% and few profited from this super asset.

Worth a mention: Jordi Alba, Stephen Gerrard.

😀 you will just get more confused with that question. My personal logic is that since usually players taking part in the pre game press conference start the game. And Klose did that. Also he works better with Ozil who needs to be on top form for Germany to win. Schweini who has a better understanding with Gomez is slightly injured as well. 😀

Klose because he limks up well with Ozil then Gomez and the German attack was looking better with Klose than in the earlier games.

        ^^this^^

Ozil looked far more dangerous with the more mobile Klose up front as Klose opened up more space for Ozil to exploit. I will be looking at Ozil and Khedira/Reus for the semis, and get either Balo, Cassano or Silva up front.

Because he for sure starts and has a good chance of scoring. Ronaldo won't be getting much of the ball. Gomez and Klose whoever starts will be getting points, but no one is sure who is starting as of now. Silva is nailed but the other 3 will take some thinking

Has anyone ever tried out a strategy in the fpl where they don't bother with attacking options from the top 4, who are expensive and prone to rotation, instead getting big hitting defenders from the big boys (kompany, vidic, cole) and attacking players from the 2nd tier teams (toon, spurs, liverpool, fulham)?

I'm guessing that the main problem with this strategy is that you usually want big hitting forwards for captain options.

Yes that is the main problem. For me it will be 2 from Aguero, Rooney and RvP up top. I will have at least 1 big hitting defender though.

But there are still the Rooneys and Van Persies to consider. Basically a top 4 attacking option ends up nailed on (or close enough to) then worth it if not you're better off with a guaranteed starter with a less high ceiling from one of the lesser teams.

I had a decent (top 10k) finish one year playing 5-3-2 most of the time with essentially this strategy, the chief drawback is the captaincy issue as you've already flagged, but in recent seasons there's been a trend away from stodgy one-nils when the top teams play each other and I think that's likely set to continue next season which will make this strategy more fraught still.

I think I’ve ballsed this up. I am defending 1st in my MLs and was a little drunk after the England game so flapped and made changes there and then thinking there would be price rises. I came up with this sorry lot:

    Rui Patricio (4m Safikas)

    Boateng, Abate, Alba, Arbeloa (Maniatis)

    Iniesta, Busquets, Khedira, Custudio, Marchisio

    Gomez, CR7, Cassano

And only left myself 3 subs and 0.3m. Obviously Custudio stinks. Any other ways out of this problem. Please help!!

Doesn't look too bad to me, but I'd wait until the teams are announced tomorrow before making any more.

I'd get Fabregas / Torres whoever starts tomorrow and I'd be looking to sneak in Ozil for Iniesta but it's certainly salvageable with 3 transfers.

    Just a quick off topic post;

Does anybody know if the mobile network 'Three', has good service in most places allowing good Internet connection.
Also, which mobile network has the best service in your opinion?

Thanks, it's just all the contracts for good phones seem to be a lot cheap on three, so I wondered if this meant worse connectivity.

      There all crap!!!

4G coming soon once they have switched off all analogue TV signals. there going to use that antenna network to give us 4G.

In the mean time your better to use wifi on your phone and sign up to BT or someone who has all these hotspots about.

What is different in 4G to 3G?

On a different note, would you pick as a new phone; Samsung Galaxy S3 or iPhone 4S

Its a lot faster. Like 10 ten times faster as its based on internet technology not phone crap.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G

Neither for me as I'm a Blackberry user. If I had to I would go for the iPhone

Marchisio is gonna def stay there. I like the differential and he is good. Scored double digit goals for Juve last year and has great stats. Pique Pepe means even less Spainards. Problem if they go throw. Also Pique is a goal threat I don't want to miss his goal in the next 2

The only thing that you could be missing is a bit of Spanish attacking coverage, and we will know the line-ups before the deadline so you can gamble on someone like Fabregas or Torres.

Wouldn't bother with Mario. He was terrible against England and wastes the majority of chances he gets. Pirlo and Abate would be better. Not seen much from Marchisio to merit investment.

The rest seems fine though. Maybe one more Spaniard would be a good thing.

Marchisio is already there so I don't want to waste transfer on him. He will get RB has plenty of SOT and created same goal scoring opportunities against England as Pirlo. Will keep him and I expect goals in the Germany Italy game and I see Ballo scoring. Maybe if Torres start, but just maybe

Apart from the usual things everyone says like the whole Gomez/Klose situation etc etc, I think the main thing I'd suggest is swapping Pepe and Boateng for Perreira and Hummels/Badstuber just in case Boateng doesn't play. I think he will, but that change would be safer imo

Coloccini or one of the Liv CB are on there way to City. Looks like Mancini isn't satisfied with Lescott. Let's not even mention Savic. I was considering Lescott for my initial squad. This doesn't look good

Skrtel had a terrible season IMO, hope he goes from a Liverpool perspective, but City better get him in better form if they want to make a bargain of signing him. Liverpool should invest in a new goalie IMO. Reina can stop shots great but for the simple things like holding a ball he fails

what are people's plans for the semis?

Personally I think Germany will beat Italy, so I'm going heavy on them

Neuer, Hummels, Lahm, Ozil, Khedira/Reus, Schweiny

Spreading my coverage elsewhere, Pirlo and maybe another Italian

Then CR7, Pepe, Alba, Busquets and one more from this match if I don't get that Italian.

I think all sides will score except maybe Portugal but if Portugal do score you have much more certainty over the scorer than any other side.

Fancy Mario and Balzaretti from the Italians as I think Germany will win.

Spain: one of Fabregas or Torres, Alba, Areola.

And then make the rest up.
