Sanchez to miss Gameweek 12 as Potter confirms goalkeeper replacement

Following our round-ups of Saturday and Sunday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) action, our Scout Notes cover all the Gameweek 11 matches in more depth.

We start with Brighton and Hove Albion v Newcastle United.

All stats and graphics in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where there is still a seven-day free trial available.

Brighton and Hove Albion 1-1 Newcastle United

  • Goals: Leandro Trossard (£6.4m) | Isaac Hayden (£4.5m)
  • Assists: None | Ciaran Clark (£4.4m)
  • Bonus: Trossard x3, Hayden x3, Clark x1

HOW LONG IS SANCHEZ OUT FOR AND WHO WILL REPLACE HIM?

Robert Sanchez (£4.6m) will miss Gameweek 12 as a result of his sending off in Saturday’s draw with Newcastle.

It’s only a one-match ban, however: the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity carries the lowest possible punishment for a red card, with foul and abusive language (two-game suspension) and serious foul play/violent conduct (three-match ban) penalised more severely.

For those FPL managers with a playing goalkeeper substitute and with fires to fight elsewhere, it’s an easy-ish hold: the following fixtures are reasonable enough and on a par with many of the alternative £4.5m shot-stoppers.

Sanchez suspended for Gameweek 12 as Potter confirms goalkeeper replacement

As for who will line up between the posts at Villa Park in a fortnight’s time, it’s good news for Fantasy bosses who backed up their Sanchez pick with understudy Jason Steele (£4.0m).

It already looked very likely that Steele would deputise for his teammate, as he had been on the bench in every league fixture this season and has played in the Carabao Cup, and Albion boss Graham Potter confirmed on Monday that the £4.0m goalkeeper would be between the posts against the currently managerless Villans.

“Jason has played in the Carabao Cup so he will be in goal and Kjell [Scherpen] will support him.

“Jason has never let us down, he’s a fantastic guy and he will take the opportunity. His distribution is fantastic, he makes saves. He knows the guys, works with us every day so no problems with Jason. That’s what he’s there for, to wait for an opportunity and to be ready and I know he will do that.” – Graham Potter

The Seagulls’ head coach also had words of encouragement for Sanchez.

“It’s the life of a goalkeeper. It’s the life of a young goalkeeper that you have to take some adversity at times, some challenging moments. It’s always about how you respond.

“A career isn’t built on success only, it’s built on moments like today, moments where confidence isn’t as high or form isn’t as good. That’s how young players develop and grow and we’ll support him and have the utmost faith and belief in him.

“We love him for what he has done with us. He has been fantastic. It’s upsetting for him at the moment but he’ll get back stronger.” – Robert Sanchez

LAMPTEY ‘OUT OF POSITION’, WEBSTER GETS FIRST MINUTES

Above: Brighton’s average position map (left) and Tariq Lamptey’s touch map (right) in Gameweek 11

Isaac Hayden‘s (£4.5m) second-half strike ensured that Brighton’s clean sheet went up in smoke in a flat display against Newcastle but there was a positive to take with the first Premier League start of the season for Tariq Lamptey (£4.4m).

Effectively deployed “out of position” on the right flank for the hosts, the former Chelsea defender was a bright spark and got into some threatening positions, narrowly failing to divert a cross home midway through the first half before racing onto a Sanchez punt shortly after the interval to produce a tame shot from inside the visitors’ area.

Occasionally the most advanced player in the Albion attack (as his heatmap above indicates), his total of eight penalty box touches was only beaten by two other FPL defenders in Gameweek 11.

He’s back on the FPL radar but his injury history, coupled with the congested Christmas schedule, may well see Potter use him sensibly and sparingly over the coming two months – indeed, the Brighton boss suggested after full-time that he is still not fully fit.

“A little bit of using Tariq’s qualities to help the team as much as we can while we are in a stage where he is not 100% because we are building minutes up.

“We wanted to use his attributes and stretch the backline. We thought they [Newcastle] would be quite deep, we thought we would need runners in behind them, we thought we’d need to challenge their backline in terms of width.

“And obviously it’s easier for Tariq to do that if he doesn’t have quite so much to do defensively, but he can do both.” – Graham Potter

The threat to popular FPL budget defender Shane Duffy‘s (£4.4m) place grows by the week, especially with Adam Webster (£4.4m) now free of injury and getting his first bit of Premier League game-time since September as a late substitute on Saturday. Webster’s ball-playing ability from the back – something that Duffy lacks – was arguably missed against Newcastle’s deep defence, while the Irishman’s shortage of pace was exposed in the incident that led to Sanchez’s dismissal. Duffy has generally been excellent this season and there is room for him and Webster in the same side but with Lamptey fit, the versatile Joel Veltman (£4.4m) adept at playing at centre-half and Dan Burn (£4.4m) set to return over the international break, Albion will soon have a full complement of defenders available for selection to give Potter a welcome headache at the back.

Duffy and Veltman are, incidentally, both a booking away from a one-match ban.

TROSSARD ON PENALTIES?

Leandro Trossard (£6.4m) is one of just three ever-present starters for Brighton this season and has completed 90 minutes in each of the last nine Gameweeks.

He moved joint-tenth among FPL midfielders for points with his goal against the Magpies and was arguably the star of the show at the Amex, again leading the line as Neal Maupay (£6.5m) was forced to make do with a place on the bench for the second week running.

The Belgian was top among the players involved in this fixture for penalty box touches, shots and chances created.

Is he now on penalties, too?

It’s too early to be drawing conclusions: Pascal Gross (£5.9m), Maupay, Danny Welbeck (£6.0m) and Alexis Mac Allister (£5.4m), who have all taken spot-kicks before him in this season or last, were all off the field at the time of Albion’s penalty award on Saturday.

HOWE IMMINENT

Newcastle will likely be under the stewardship of Eddie Howe by the time Gameweek 12 comes around, as the former Bournemouth man was in the director’s box at the Amex for the evening kick-off.

The performances have been marginally better under Graeme Jones over the last three Gameweeks but they’ve all been safety-first, with the interim Newcastle boss adopting a conservative 3-5-2/5-3-2 set-up.

Howe favoured a more attacking 4-4-2/4-4-1-1 system at Bournemouth and there may be interest rekindled in the talismanic Callum Wilson (£7.3m) – who would have scored his fifth goal in eight matches had he not been felled by Sanchez in the red card incident – as a result.

The reunited boss and player will have a very decent first four matches to look forward to after the international break, three of which are at home.

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez, Veltman, Duffy, Dunk, Lamptey (Webster 75), Mwepu (MacAllister 46), Bissouma, Cucurella, March (Maupay 65), Lallena, Trossard.

Newcastle United XI: Darlow, Murphy, Krafth (Gayle 90+4), Lascelles, Clark, Ritchie, Almiron (Joelinton 74), Hayden, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin, Wilson.

Had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted do to during the intl break but Spurs 0 sot in last two GWs is hardly inspiring. Any thoughts? The Sanchez suspension is a very unnecessary headache! 1 FT and £1.9m ITB.

    Sanchez (!)

    Chilwell, James, TAA, Dier

    Salah, Mbeuno, Foden, Sarr

    Wood, Jimenez

    Subs: McGovern, Christensen, Vardy, Mendy

What would you say about keeping Havertz Mbeumo Toney one more week and replacing them by Gallagher Jota Jim -4 for GW13?

Jim mostly for the two plum fixtures and getting Antonio before GW16. Recon Gallagher and Jota could be kept for longer.

I never envisaged a green arrow this week. I benched Cancelo for some reason and it didn’t look good from there. But for 71 points to get 107k game week rank is kind of bizarre, albeit very welcome. There must have been some much higher scores than mine this week. Anyone in the 90’s?

If properly means something like beching Son and Toney and starting Raph and Livra, it's properly only with hindsight imo. People were considering giving armband to Toney for example.

As a Jota owner he's approaching Toney level on ffs, incredibly overrated will be happy the day I can take him out my team. Doesn't get 90, never hauls, barely involved in most games, misses sitters when he gets them, doesn't get bonus when he returns anyway and best of all way cheaper players are outscoring him for fun

Yes he's main striker for Liverpool while Bobby is out and that's exciting but based on his performances there's not much to be excited about

Fair enough it's about opinions but I don't see how you can disagree with the facts lol

Gallagher has outscored him that period for one as has ESR

He doesn't get 90 often, even with Bobby injured

Has 0 bonus points even when he returns

its not facts lol. you've just said never didnt mean never. you say he has barely been involved but in fpl terms, he is very much involved in big chances. Foden scored 2 fortunate goals vs Brighton, and hasnt delivered in his last two. Son has blanked for some time, Jota was also unlucky not to come on vs Watford having just recovered from a minor injury.

I've literally just explained the facts

                              Outscored by cheaper players= fact

                              Doesn't get bonus= fact

                              Doesn't get 90 often= fact

Didn't mention son or Foden either so not sure what that's about, they're both more expensive not cheaper

Jota's not terrible, but my main point was I don't understand the clamour for him, if you're happy as an owner great, I'm looking at cheaper players easily outscoring him

Fpl terms remember, don't think of him as a good addition to Liverpool's team which he obviously is, is he getting you bang for fpl buck? Not for me no

you can nit pick anything to suit your argument with gallagher but Jota is outscoring plenty of more expensive players. You didnt mention Son or Foden-two popular picks because it doesnt suit your argument.
Doesnt get 90 = not fact
                                  barely involved = not fact
not much to get excited about = not fact
he has the 3rd highest xG of all midfielders and 4th highest xGI. Please go ahead and sell if you dont think he is good though.

That doesn't make sense because I'm not suggesting to get either of those players either and would say the same about them that they're being outscored by cheaper players

Doesn't get 90 didn't mean he's never got 90 which I'm sure you're aware of, he's got it twice, in 11 weeks for info

Barely involved= big divock is clear. Fpl terms he has returned in 4 games only 0 bonus

I know what he has, he's not delivering on it that's my point..it's fpl you want points not performances and xg

I'm definitely selling and won't look back at all, what do I have to be afraid of exactly? 7 points? Getting subbed at 67 minutes every week?

Ah great you're gonna take my 67 minutes comment literally and point out he's never been subbed at 67 minutes aren't you 😛

Spurs haven’t had a shot on target in the last two weeks. Son can do one.

                        How is this WC team?

                        Ramsdale Steele
                        TAA Cancelo James Reguilon Livramento
                        Salah Jota Raphinha Foden Son
                        Antonio Hwang 4,5m

Would mean hybrid 5-4-1, 4-5-1 and 4-4-2 systems

Strong. Can't see where you can improve. I used my WC in GW5 and I am glad that the only difference between this team and my team is Williams Toney instead of Reguilon Hwang.

I would be all over it if Spurs had shown more against Everton.

Arsenal have been solid recently but they did struggle against Chelsea and City so maybe Liverpool will have similar joy against them.

Don't focus on just the lack of shots on target, not sure if you saw the game but they were in the box and had numerous counters and shots that didn't hit the target but could easily have gone in

I think it was but yeah watch and form your own opinion, to me they attacked way more and not scoring came down to being rusty they definitely had chances though it wasn't a Nuno style no shots on target

Kane didn't look too impressive, that's my main worry

Non of the back 4 and keeper playing now (Apart from Tierney who will come back in I assume), played against Chelsea or City though.

I think Liverpool score but not expecting a rout.

                                  Best option;

                                  A) Dias > Cancelo

                                  B) Mount > Foden

                                  Pop quiz time

If it were a 17 team league (minus big 3) which would be the three worst defences for goals conceded per match? That is to say in FPL where would you expect to get most returns from a non elite attack?

In current form, I would say Villa, Brentford and Watford closely followed by Newcastle but they were okay at weekend.

11 goals from 8 non top 3 matches. Looks solid enough to me when seen like that.

How many non elite teams are capable of doing what Chelsea Liverpool and City did? Villa and Newcastle have been far leakier in run of the mill matches.

                                      Nice spot.

Came into the season thinking that Norwich were being misjudged on the basis of the last time they were in the PL. Their defence in the Champo was solid in contrast to the last time they were there. Very different outlook.

Obvs you can't write off those big defeats completely but do wonder if they skew perspectives. Are a team like Brentford or Newcastle really going to do the same?

Spurs will score, they attacked in great numbers and were basically rusty more than anything, it wasn't like Nuno where they didn't even attack or have chances

                                        Ramsdale
Taa • Cancelo • James -- Livramento Duffy
                                        Salah • Raph • Foden • Mbeumo -- Brownhill
                                        Antonio • Toney • Jimenez

The easy option is one of Mbeumo or Jimmy >> Son or Kane and roll FT.

The other option is shifting to a 352 with Jota but then need to stick with 352 for a while as its not easy to shift back over the xmas period. This could work as apart from Toney, no other budget forwards have good fixtures from gw16 onwards

I know there's a long time until next GW but, early thoughts.

                                        Who should I bench?

                                        a) Vardy (Che H)
                                        b) Raphinha (Tot a)
                                        c) Mbuemo (New a)
                                        d) Chilwill (Lei a)
                                        e) Livramento (Nor a)

He’s the least likely to seriously hurt you if you bench.

Personally also see Norwich scoring. New manager boost, coming off a win, kind of game where 0-0 does little for them if they want to stay up.

Playing him ahead of Chilwell for instance is asking for trouble imo.

Yeaaah.. I don't know, Norwich are pretty poor allround, lucky last GW with the victory. I think Mbuemo or Vardy is the one i'm going for.

Sorry about the repost but it takes me so long to complete I miss the article people are on.
Well I watched the majority of matches this week and here is what I saw. Opinion only:
Soton 1 Villa 0: I took a gamble on Watkins and it failed but so did Antonio, my alternative. Watkins is still involved and I see some benefits later. Benrahma not the player he should be but the demise of the manager could change things. Bailly was the big disappointment, Soton on the other hand have done a complete about turn. Their defense looks OK. We all wait on Armstrong vs Broja.
ManU 0 Citeh 2: Amazing how inept ManU were. Citeh got everything right apart from more goals. Cancelo does not need to defend and there will be more points going forward. KDB still off the pace but Foden will repay his Investors soon. For me, Citeh are the best in the league and Pep is showing signs of being more predictable. Until such time as Ollie goes, ManU are not worth going near. Citeh stick with Cancelo and Foden with a sprinkling of Jesus if you can afford it. Gundo and Silva outside picks.
Brentford 1 Norwich 2: Mbeumo has been a little unlucky but, even at his price, Gallagher and ESR seem better choices. In my view we are seeing Brentford home truths coming out and I cannot see many goals without their best attacker Raya, the keeper, being around. No need to comment on Norwich IMO.
Chelsea 1 Burnley 1:You won't watch such a one sided match for the rest of the season. The best player was Rjames. (An inch perfect cross/assist. Havertz improved but is far more deep lying than one may appreciate. I was interested in Cornet's performance and I will right this game off for this appraisal.Burnley went back to doing what they do best and defend. Pope was very good. Any other day the score could have been big for Chelsea.
Palace 2 wolves 0: One can't get away from the fact, Palace are the surprise package this year. Gallagher was good but don't expect returns every week. Guaita is showing promise in a good balanced side. I do think Wolves were off the pace though like the second half vs Everton .Zaha is doing what he does every year; maybe a hope he continues this time around. I rate their Central defense but not sure as an investment. Jimenez and Hwang are the obvious picks (I have Jimenez) but the fixtures turn soon and I can see a drop in points.
Brighton 1 Newcastle 1. Newcastle are god awful with Wilson the only points appeal. Brighton shot themselves in the foot but on a brighter note, Lamptey could be a nice alternative; his energy is something else. (I did not watch all the match TBF.)
Arsenal 1 Watford 0: No doubting Arsenal improving but hard to determine much in this match. ESR is quality as is Saka. Don't be deceived by ESR though as his match involvement is not as it seems. I had him at 5.3, missed his hauls on the bench. Sold him and the rest is history. The performance vs Palace sticks in my mind with Arsenal so I am sitting on the fence. I am very impressed with their defenders though. I would not be rushing Tierney back whilst Tavares is performing like he is.
Everton 0 Spurs 0: Not seen 2 inept attacking sides like this. IMO Everton were the better side and I am starting to regret listening to the noise. Spurs are unfit and they proceeded to kick Everton off the park to impress the new manager. Get rid of Everton assets IMO and hold off in buying Spurs as well. At least there was a bit of unskilled passion from both sides.
Leeds 1 Foxes 1: Another game hard to fathom. Both poor defensively and Raphina the only player to come out OK, albeit with his second goal this season meant to be a cross. Barnes great goal comes not too often these days and I wonder when Leicester will revert back to Iheanacho who is the best foxes forward IMO.
Hammers 3 Pool 2: The Pool keeper had a nightmare, Hendo is starting to wein, Pool were playing a far too high line against a team that specializes in countering this. Antonio is not doing it for me lately but Bowen is. TAA gave good reason to hold him and a sublime free kick came about. Jota was in and out and Mane was awful. Declan was brilliant once again and his progressive play after breaking it down is the reason he is worth the money in the real world. I would not be dropping Johnson anytime soon. Whether Moyes thinks the same, I am not sure.
Pardon the grammar boys and I hope it offers some insight.

I live in South Africa and we can watch all the games. I have to admit I miss out the "boring fixtures" sometimes. If I did not follow Everton I would not have watched the Spurs game for instance. I still enjoyed it just because of increased effort. Let's face it, its not about watching the best all the time, sometimes the entertainment.

On Wildcard and will have Ramsdale as my GK. Who should be the bench goalkeeper.

                                        A. Steele (would play him this round against Villa and has better fixture than Foster)
                                        B. Foster (Would probably play him ahead of Ramsdale this week)

Is Foster worth the 0.2 over a 3.9 gk would be the question I'd ask?
Don't see much merit in switching keepers unless the opponents are vastly different. And I don't think it is this GW.

Folk really need to trust their own eyes, instincts and statistics, rather than be influenced by group think, particularly by many in the FPL community. I am happy to watch others jump on the Spurs & Conte magic man bandwagon at Spurs.

Their attacking stats are awful as has been Kane. Son has been ok, but the rest of the team is relatively awful. No goals against an Everton team whose defensive stats recently have been at best ordinary.

There are many better value options with decent fixtures, eg Jota, Gallagher, Bowen (fixtures are not great for a few weeks, but is returning consistently), Foden, Smith Rowe.

I agree with your sentiments. Son has been a grass roots pick though, never mind how afful Spurs are. Kane should only be a wait and see. son has been high in the points charts for mids during the season with good fixtures. The noise I have not listened to but the conversation has been interesting TBF

Yes Son is ok and has been carrying Spurs this season. I recollect the same hype when Ronaldo and Lukaku came in. That said, I thought that hype was far more rational at that time.

As a result of that hype I played an unnecessary wildcard as was 21k at the time, and have had more red arrows since, although starting to recover !. Whilst it my have given me a bias not to be so influenced again, I am not about to repeat this "error", but is based on my independent eye test of lousy Kane performances, poor stats and a very ordinary team. Just my view and as cannot predict the future, I may well be proved wrong !

I can see value in stats but it bores me TBH. I have been around a long time and I know the game well (I think)
The eye test tells you team set up or more the point can they actually do what they are trying to do. Spurs noise was a bit of a joke. I never use Twitter apart from the top of this page. We can all get sucked in though but it is sorting the wheat from the chaff.

You are right; until you are wrong.

One of these days, Kane & Son, along with Spurs as a whole will pick up performances.

It may be next GW v Leeds. It could be v Norwich. It may be even later than that

I think the people getting in Spurs players are just gambling that they will come good in these fixtures (not based on their recent form).

I’m undecided what to do right now. But it’s short sighted to think Spurs have been poor, ergo they will continue to be poor for the rest of the season.

Probably depends on the state of the rest of the team.
If they have other fires to put out, I can understand holding toney and mbeumo as they may not be a priority while their fixtures are still good.

just take the points hit and remove them. Brentford look clueless at this level with their route one football. Luckily others around them are having a torrid season, otherwise they'd be in the relegation zone by now.

                                            It's a coinflop for vardy.

He goes on runs of scoring and then blanking. So how long will his current blank run last?

He doesn't look that involved watching the games but as we all know, you can't really judge Vardy that way.

So the question is what are the chances the replacement will score more than him? Probably 50/50 with Wilson IMO

I'm doing the same but Sarr to Son.

Wilson, when he is fit, scores points however bad Newcastle are.
Now he has a manager who has worked with him before and good fixtures. He'll be a differential for most. Considering strikers aren't scoring many FPL points, it is worth a gamble

Mbuemo has factually been an awful FPL pick.
Since gameweek 8 which is when his ownership grew 4 fold he has scored 5 points.

Classic example of someone who just doesn't look like a good FPL pick. Obviously not as bad as Traore but along the same lines

Of the three Gallagher looks the most legitimate attacking.

ESR has been lucky so although he's been a good pick I don't think his points will stay consistent.

Mbuemo just isn't proving the points at all.

Gallagher is providing points and drives at goal consistently. If I didn't have other transfer plans, I'd move to Gallagher from Mbuemo

Sure ESR has been lucky, but then he is the opposite off Mbuemo I guess.

So stay clear of the two heavily luck based ones and go with the one who actually looks consistent would seem the logical thing to do.

Unfortunately his price didnt went up, could have atleast made some money.

What huge traps Toney & Mbeumo have turned out to be. I started off with Toney then got rid on my wc, now I own him again.

                                        Thoughts on the below please.

                                        A. Mbeumo > Gallagher
                                        B. Raph > Bowen

I keep saying 'one more week with Mbeumo but my patience is up with him now!

With Raph I am not sure but Bowen is playing in a much better team.

Raphinha is a season keeper for me, he is as good as it gets at that price. Find a way to do Mbeumo to Bowen

Thanks, you think Bowen over Gallagher?
